THIS IS YOUR WEEKLY REMINDER: THE FLORIDA BOYCOTT CONTINUES!!! For those of us in the States, this is Memorial Day weekend, a time of remembrance of the warriors among us, those who struggled and stood and fought and bled and died for something greater than themselves. Traditionally, many of Us use this time to offer gratitude and respect to the many fallen heroes of Our peoples: Nzinga, Cinque, Nat Turner, Sojourner Truth, Lozen, Toussaint L'Ouverture, Geronimo, Harriet Tubman, John Brown, Black Elk, Gabriel Prosser, Frederick Douglass, Robert Smalls, Ganga Zumba, Oginga Odinga, Ida B. Wells, Patrice Lumumba, Malcolm X, Walter Rodney, Samora Machel, Fred Hampton, and on and on; as well as nameless others on whose shoulders we stand. I personally add to those so honored the members of my own family who suffered and struggled and sacrificed to make "a way outta no way" for me and mine. We honor these Precious Ones, because they left a legacy of fortitude, courage, vision and commitment -- commitment to ove ...

In 2004, the Army named its first ship after an African-American. That man was Robert Smalls. Smalls was born to a slave mother and a white father in Beaufort, S.C. As a young man, Smalls held several jobs in Charleston, S.C., and finally began working at the docks. He eventually learned to be a seaman, and then how to pilot a ship. In 1861, Smalls was hired as a deckhand on the USS Planter, the transport steamer serving Brigadier General Roswell Ripley, commander of the Second Military District of South Carolina. The USS Planter served the Confederacy as an armed dispatch and transport boat. Soon after Smalls was hired he became the ship's pilot. On May 12, 1862, the Planter's three white officers spent the night ashore. It was at that time that Smalls enacted a plan that he had been working out for some time. The plan was to take the Planter, pick up his family and some of the other black crew men's families and head towards the Union Army's blockade in the North. By the morning of May 13 Smalls had alr ...
On This Day In History. On this day in 1775, John Hancock is elected president of the Second Continental Congress. John Hancock is best known for his large signature on the Declaration of Independence, which he jested the British could read without spectacles. He was serving as president of Congress upon the declaration's adoption on July 4, 1776, and, as such, was the first member of the Congress to sign the historic document. John Hancock graduated from Harvard University in 1754 at age 17 and, with the help of a large inherited fortune, established himself as Boston's leading merchant. The British customs raid on one of Hancock's ships, the sloop Liberty, in 1768 incited riots so severe that the British army fled the city of Boston to its barracks in Boston Harbor. Boston merchants promptly agreed to a non-importation agreement to protest the British action. Two years later, it was a scuffle between Patriot protestors and British soldiers on Hancock's wharf that set the stage for the Boston Massacre. H ...
robert is so cute..putting up applique tinting on the windows to help keep the sun and summer heat out. we went to home depot earlier and found applique to give windows a stained glass look which actually looks like the real stained glass and so off he goes now to purchase those for the dining room windows. we have changed/rearranged furniture and reduced the clutter. We really like our home. It is serene, soothing and comfortable. I asked him to make a small book case for the dining room which we are turning into our reike room and he is so excited to do so. being frugal it is nice to be creative and make our own.

In a debate with a *** person over what I said In my Chick Fil A video a while back in my message box, this isnt the whole convo but this is their second message to me and my response back to them: Them: Being *** starts in the womb..being black starts in the womb...it IS the same argument and a biological fact. It was not based on facts, but opinion. I don't like people being discriminated against for something that they were born to be. It is NOT a lifestyle to be *** Me: well I dont use religion against how I feel about homosexuality. Im not religious but aye you live you life however you want to. From a member Hi, I would like to ask some advice from both your staff and your community. I've just recently moved into a new apartment and I feel like there is something mischievous running about. Recently, things have been going missing, such as my pentacle (seemingly right off the chain I was wearing) and my roommate's padlock and key; we've tried to explain these disappearances but have found no reasonable explanation. Also, I've recently felt like there is something or someone moving about the space when I am alone or when I know no one is around to make such noises. I don't feel threatened by these presences, but I would very much like them to stop taking our things. Is there any advice, spells, or rituals that you could suggest to me so that I could pacify whatever is in my apartment? I'm still in my "year and a day" phase of training as a solitary witch, so I know very little about how to even approach this. I don't want them banished or harmed, as I know that is it good to have such spirits or f ...

Does this shoulder thing also function as a teacher killer so I can have an optimal teacher:student death ratio?"

Gnosticism, they say, is on the upsurge... So just what is it? Are we witnessing a rediscovery of Gnosticism? To judge from the burgeoning new literature and the increased use of the terms "gnosis" and "Gnosticism" in popular publications, the answer would seem to be yes. Only twenty-five years ago, when one used the word "Gnostic," it was very likely to be misunderstood as "agnostic," and thus have one's statement turned into its exact opposite. Such misapprehensions are far less likely today. Nevertheless, increased academic attention (beginning with the discovery of the Nag Hammadi scriptures in 1945) and the ensuing popular interest have produced a confusion of tongues which is anything but helpful for the sincere inquirer into matters Gnostic. It is often difficult even to tell what is meant by the word. The difficulty in defining Gnosticism is not entirely of recent origin. As early as 1910, a small book was published in London that in many ways foreshadowed current trends, including the difficultie ...
Gatsby (for those of you not in the know) Plot Overview Nick Carraway, a young man from Minnesota, moves to New York in the summer of 1922 to learn about the bond business. He rents a house in the West Egg district of Long Island, a wealthy but unfashionable area populated by the new rich, a group who have made their fortunes too recently to have established social connections and who are prone to garish displays of wealth. Nick’s next-door neighbor in West Egg is a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby, who lives in a gigantic Gothic mansion and throws extravagant parties every Saturday night. Nick is unlike the other inhabitants of West Egg—he was educated at Yale and has social connections in East Egg, a fashionable area of Long Island home to the established upper class. Nick drives out to East Egg one evening for dinner with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and her husband, Tom, an erstwhile classmate of Nick’s at Yale. Daisy and Tom introduce Nick to Jordan Baker, a beautiful, cynical young woman with wh ...

Thursday, Senior Outfielder Jimmy Bailey didn't play in his final game because of a prank he pulled earlier on another student (mooned the person). I understand the seriousness of pranks today and I know there are rules we must all follow and there are consequences when we don't. But I needed to say this...Jimmy Bailey is one of the finest young men I have ever covered in sports at any level. He is always nice, always has a smile on his face, is always willing to grant an interview, win or lose, and is an excellent student/athlete. I will always have a soft spot for Jimmy because he is a great example of how young people should be. Don't punish him forever because of one mistake!

Pierce is doing better, he had a really good night. He slept like a rock for the first time in a longtime We spoke to one of his doctors yesterday and they are very pleased with him, he is doing really good and is a strong little man. Pierce loves them both and they are great with kids... Dr Ross. Dear Mutula, When you get there, please inform Saitoti that Kenyans have begun to forget about his untimely death. Also, please inform him that the commission that was formed to find out the cause of his death blamed it all on the pilot that joined him in death. Two days ago Robert Marawa hosted a party, live on television, to celebrate the broadcasting of the 100th episode of his weekly SuperSport sports magazine show, Thursday Night Live With Marawa. I’m a fan of Marawa and I watch his television football shows and I’m a regular viewer of the Thursday Night Live programme, which is a show of a kind, complete with a live band performance in the studio. He has come a very long way, from his debut on SABC 17 years ago, to this iconic television presenter who was trusted by Fifa to host the live draw for the 2010 World Cup finals when it was held in Cape Town. The boy from KwaZulu-Natal, who studied law at Wits, has been so devoted to his profession he hasn’t even found time to settle down and get married and, two days ago, his Thursday Night Live show clocked 100 episodes. Mark Williams, scorer of one of the goals in the final as Bafana Bafana won the Nations Cup on home soil in ’96, was there at the party and was one of the people given the floor to sing ...

This Memorial Day let's remember these and every fallen hero. Without them we would not have our freedoms. And thank a Veteran for there service. Some gave all, All game some. Remembering the fallen on Gold Star Mothers Day By Bonnie Hilt Sept. 21, 2011 | 0 comments What is Gold Star Mothers Day you may ask? It's probably not a day we mark on our calendar or even give a thought, but if you're a Gold Star Mother it's a day you never forget. A Gold Star Mother is a mother who has lost a son or daughter during wartime. Gold Star Mothers Day was founded in 1917 when a mother who lost her son during WWI found it took several weeks to be notified of his or her death. She went to Congress to make a statement to keep better records and that mothers would be recognized the third Sunday of September each year. Her reason was that when their son or daughter wanted to enlist in the service they would usually ask "mom" first. This was passed by Congress without any opposition. When WWII broke out, Congress set out to ...

I just invited as many of my Ottawa FB friends (as I could see on my lists,) to an "event" which is the proposed renaming of Centrepointe Park. The event is neutral, in that it merely asks you to go to the City webpage and make a comment. However, in my personal capacity as a resident on the edge of the park, I want to express my lack of support for any renaming of this park. It is a large, geographically named park that is the heart of the community and renaming it for any person is not appropriate, in my opinion. Please consider going to the City link provided in the "event" and making a comment to indicate whether you agree with the renaming, or not. If the City does not receive many comments against the proposal, it will likely go ahead. Thank you. If you did not receive an invitation, just search for "Centrepointe Community Association" here on FB and click on the link at the event there. Thank you.
"MY TWO HOURS REVELATION OF HEAVEN" Latest Testimony from Bro. Emmanuel Samsonjude From Deeper Christian Life Ministry (A Holiness-Pentecostal group based in Lagos, Nigeria) The Lord is mightier than the noise of many waters, than the mighty waves of the Sea. Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever. (Psalms 93:4-5). I consider under the sun that every one is there for a mission and the mission can either Be for GOOD OR EVIL, it will either profit GOD OR DEVIL, But your DECISION will determine your DESTINATION because you cannot serve God and mammon. 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 when you are in Christ old things are passed away Because you are a new creature; so you must come out from any unclean thing. I remember sometimes ago when i was still in the world, i determine to become an higher-killer But i thank God today Because the Lord destroyed every plan of the devil against my life and Jesus Christ turned me to a soul winner for His glorious Kingdom. (1 Peter 2:9-10) Jesus ...

This weekend: kicking off with MasterChef special (you're going DAHN Ludovic). Clean up tomorrow, followed by homework with Lelly, playing with Bobo and preparing for the biggest rugby match of our lives in the afternoon/evening. Sunday: Mother's Day! Looking forward to sweet surprises from the small people. In between all that, have to take seductive photos of my Clive Barker collection (including my prized letter from the man himself), without Robert eating anything...
Belle Jenkins-Ashe Family Cemetery 1979 Greasy Branch Rd. Roundhill, N.C. 28713 The Belle Jenkins-Ashe Family Cemetery was established in the Roundhill community of Swain County, N.C. in 1892 by Elias Brendle and Laura Palestine Jenkins and was known as the Jenkins Cemetery for many years. The first burial was their 10 month old daughter, Flora Lee, the forth of their ten children, just a baby, as so many laid to rest here are. The second burial, also in 1892 was, to quote from the list that Walton Ray Ashe (grandson of E.B. and Laura who maintained the cemetery for many years) prepared was “Bert Cunningham’s baby”, most likely the infant of Burt and Sarah Cunningham, whose daughter Lou married Robert Lee Jenkins, the son of Charles “Doc” Jenkins and Mary “Polly” Nichols, who were also the parents of Laura Palestine Jenkins. The rest of the decade of the 1890’s would see the deaths of three more infants and an almost two year old girl. Ray Ashe listed three graves as “Marion Jenkins Baby ...
My last comment about Into Darkness. I promise. I know people like to defend this film by just saying it's a "dumb action movie", but I take exception to that. Action movies don't have to be dumb, and even the dumbest action adventure flick stays consistent to its own logic. Sure, Fast and Furious might have absurd car stunts at its heart, but it doesn't have a car blow up in one scene and then be driven by the characters in the next. SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS The Neutral Zone is a thirty second flight from Earth. Earth has no way of detecting or responding to a starship fight in low orbit over the planet. A Starfleet commander thinks he can attack the Federation flagship with his secretly built warship, staffed by his own private army, and somehow everyone else in Starfleet and the Federation isn't going to find this suspicious. Some welcome relief from the rain and showers of the previous days for many tomorrow. A brief ridge of high pressure building in for the weekend will settle things down somewhat, so winds dropping overnight, and clearing skies, particularly across Northern England and Scotland will allow temperatures to dip to overnight lows close to 0c in one or two rural parts, and around 1-3c in other places, bringing the risk of a touch of ground frost. Further South across England and Wales, along with Northern Ireland, more in the way of cloud should prevent temperatures from dropping too far. Into tomorrow then and a sunny start for much of the UK - the exceptions being Southern and Eastern parts of England, along with The Channel Islands, where overnight cloud may just take a little while to clear (theres also a very small risk, but a risk nonetheless, of a little sea mist/fog affecting Eastern coastal counties to begin with), and North-West Scotland and Northern Ireland, where a weather front will be close by pro ...
What Love means to a 4-8 year old . . AND MAYBE SHOULD TO ALL AGES ?.. Slow down for three minutes to read this. It is adorable. A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, 'What does love mean?' The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined See what you think: 'When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love.' Rebecca- age 8 _ 'When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.' Billy - age 4 _ 'Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.' Karl - age 5 _ 'Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.' Memorial Day History Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country. The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. The ceremonies centered around the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion, once the home of Gen. Robert E. Lee. Various Washington officials, including Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, presided over the ceremonies. After speeches, children from the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Orphan Home and members of the GAR made their way through the cemetery, strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves, reciting prayers and singing hymns. ...

In a column posted Friday at Salon.com, former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich accused the Tea Party of engaging in a plot to "undermine the government of the United States, to destroy much of its capacity to do the public’s business, and to sow distrust among the population," Breitbart.com reported Saturday.

There is nice family lounge on the hospitals pediatric floor. It has free coffee (thank god) and sometimes food appears. It has a small shelf of maybe 20-30 donated books for the taking --- it is a bizarre collection that seems to run to philosophic tomes -- the most cruelly ironic being Sartre’s No Exit. (In total fairness, I think the collection is probably a function of reverse selection -- with the Ken Follett's and other pot boilers already haven't been taken to the rooms and then home when they out lasted the patient's stay).
The very idea that anyone in the current administration would assume he or she automatically has the public’s trust simply because they hold a government office is ludicrous, to say the least. Nevertheless, the Gang of Eight say their immigration reform bill won’t add a single penny to the U.S. deficit and they expect you to believe it because, well, because they said so, that’s why. In the wake of The Heritage Foundation’s May 6 report that the immigration reform bill, as it stands now, will create a deficit of $6.3 trillion, the Gang of Eight offered a substitute amendment that would increase the implementation funding by an additional $900 million, increasing the Trust Fund to $7.5 billion. “Our watchword here is to have this bill pay for itself. In other words, we do not want it to incur any costs to the taxpayer, the Treasury or anybody else. That will be a balance. It will be the costs of administering the E-Verify program and the exit-entry visa program, the costs of strengthening the bor ...

The Ludwig von Mises Institute has a great collection of free audio books. It includes classic titles like "Man, Economy, and State", "No Treason" and "Conceived in Liberty". I especially recommend the 10 part lecture "Crisis and Liberty" by Robert Higgs. This media link is the most efficient way I've found for downloading the MP3s for offline use. Boy Scouts Buckled. Over 70 percent of the 100,000 scouting units are chartered by religious organizations. Many have already indicated that they would withdraw their charter if the Scouts implemented the change in policy. The policy change forces faith-based organizations that object to the practice of homosexuality on religious grounds to affirm something their faith teaches is morally wrong. The beliefs and convictions of parents, and untold numbers of scouts themselves, are being subordinated to the demands of a special interest group.

So i have been informed that in the catholic religion, that u can confess, and repent, and be forgiven of anything that is not a mortal sin. And according to the catholic religion, sex crimes are not a mortal sin. So. The rape of a small child "can be forgiven"... This is utterly sick and if this is true, it makes me proud not to be a part of this religion.

You can’t blame Erica Guevara for seeing just about everything in three’s. That’s because Erica and her husband Marcel, of Elkhart, are parents of Melody, Tessa and Eva (pronounced Ava), fraternal triplets born on May 3. It was the first set of triplets born at Elkhart General Hospital in 15 years.   Life, as expected, has been busy for mom and dad who are attuned to their babies’ every movement. The squirmy, but happy threesome share the same eating patterns, but unfortunately for the parents, an established napping routine has eluded them.   “We’ve figured out how to be parents to triplets. It takes Marcel and I working as a team to get everything done. And we have to be a team, because we’re outnumbered,” said a laughing Erica.     Feeling Right at Home   Staying on top of everything seemed daunting when they learned seven weeks into Erica’s pregnancy they were expecting triplets. But they quickly came to the conclusion that the Elkhart General Special Beginnings Maternity Center ...

For all fb medicos: do u know the fact.? Ok i vl tell u, VITAMIN C kills mycobacterium Tuberculosis. Analysis of transcription patterns revealed that the vitamin-exposed cells accumulated ferrous ions, which is consistent with the known bactericidal mechanism of vitamin C. The vitamin reduces ferric to ferrous iron, and the ferrous ions react with oxygen to produce hydroxyl radicals, which are a type of reactive oxygen species. The hydroxyl radicals damage guanine residuesin DNA, causing cell death... Really amazing...
THE INCORRUPTIBLE LITERARY ICON: ACHEBE IN MEMORIAM Putting it in the clearest of terms, each time the name Chinua Achebe is mentioned, the word ‘integrity’ assumes a human form. Professor Chinualumogu Achebe was an eccentric, enigmatic Nigerian who has shown over the years that integrity, steadfastness and hard work never went unpaid. He was a man of complete contentment, in spite of all the intrigues and vicissitudes of life. In my estimation, he was a man whose physical and physiological configuration were perfectly fused to ‘never say die’. It is not for us to begin to regale you with a Wikipedia of his entire profile but to capture aptly those special, peculiar qualities and attributes that made him almost unassailably outstanding. Achebe, while alive and in death, received a lot of eulogies and accolades from all parts of the world for his literary prowess and transcendence. He had (and still has) a gigantic literary stature. Professor Achebe ascertained very early in life that he had a cong ...

So the other night, Robert Smallboy and I were talking and I said, "just out of curiosity, we should walk around Amsterdam and see if you could get a job with one of the construction companies." The very next day, while talking to Robert's boss, it turns out he was in touch with a Dutch industrial painting company and hooked him up with a job in the Netherlands if he wants it! . . . and here I am working my *** off, day in and day out, writing a thesis that will not guarantee a job. . . But hey, small world, and things seem to always work out for good people like Robert :)
Sorry for the awkwardness of the last post; I'll pay more attention in the future before posting an obituary. (Which I think I actually posted back in 2008! DOH!) To make up for it, here's some of TODAY'S "CELEBRITY" BIRTHDAYS: TOMMY CHONG, DOUG JONES (creature suit actor extraordinaire), NELL CAMPBELL (a.k.a. Little Nell from Rocky Horror Picture Show), DESMOND DAVIS (director of the original CLASH OF THE TITANS), AMIR SHERVAN (director of SAMURAI COP), ROBERT WARNER (DERANGED, OCTAMAN, BLACK CHRISTMAS), HAROLD CONWAY (died in 1996 - had small roles in various classic Japanese kaiju/tokusatsu films), J. EDWARD REYNOLDS (baptist pastor that executively produced PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE and starred briefly in it as a gravedigger! He passed away in 1963.), WILL SASSO (MadTV alum), Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus in SPIDER-MAN 2; guy who dies after trying to betray Indiana Jones in the opening of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK), and JOHN C. REILLY (STEP BROTHERS, WRECK-IT RALPH, et al.).

One day, Pete complained to his friend, "My elbow really hurts. I guess I should see a doctor." His friend said, "Don't do that. There's a computer at the drug store that can diagnose anything quicker and cheaper than a doctor. Simply put in a sample of your urine, and the computer will diagnose your problem and tell you what you can do about it. And it only costs $10.00. Pete figured he had nothing to lose, so he filled a jar with a urine sample and went to the drug store. Finding the computer, he poured in the sample and deposited the $10.00. The computer started making some noise and various lights started flashing. After a brief pause, out popped a small slip of paper which read: You have tennis elbow. Soak your arm in warm water, avoid heavy labor. It will be better in two weeks. That evening while thinking how amazing this new technology was and how it would change medical science forever, he began to wonder if this computer could be fooled. He decided to give it a try. He mixed together some tap wa ...

listening to the top 40 country radio for the first time in a long time, just to see what's on there. I sure don't care for that redneck rap that seems to be popular, nor the vengeful redneck girl songs. But I fell in love with the song, "I Drive Your Truck"... starts out like a mini-movie, a single scene that *** you in. the author sneakily puts tidbits of fact in among the vivid landscapes, until you become aware of what's going on... One person's way of dealing with the loss of their brother. Well done. I bet 80% of the people who hear that song never watch the movie.
Rabbi Ben Ezra BY ROBERT BROWNING Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be, The last of life, for which the first was made: Our times are in His hand Who saith "A whole I planned, Youth shows but half; trust God: see all, nor be afraid!'' Not that, amassing flowers, Youth sighed "Which rose make ours, Which lily leave and then as best recall?" Not that, admiring stars, It yearned "Nor Jove, nor Mars; Mine be some figured flame which blends, transcends them all!" Not for such hopes and fears Annulling youth's brief years, Do I remonstrate: folly wide the mark! Rather I prize the doubt Low kinds exist without, Finished and finite clods, untroubled by a spark. Poor vaunt of life indeed, Were man but formed to feed On joy, to solely seek and find and feast: Such feasting ended, then As sure an end to men; Irks care the crop-full bird? Frets doubt the maw-crammed beast? Rejoice we are allied To That which doth provide And not partake, effect and not receive! A spark disturbs our clod; Nearer we hold of Go ...

ROBERT SMALLS: As elite Charlestonians slept unaware in the lavish mansions of the Confederacy’s spiritual capital, a slave — a mulatto man trusted by both his owners and employers — executed a daring plot that struck at the core of the white Southern imagination. In the early morning of Tuesday, May 13, 1862, Robert Smalls, the wheelman of the Planter, commandeered the former cotton steamer turned Confederate supply boat. His plan: to sail through the harbor, beyond Confederate fortifications, to the Union blockade — to freedom. On board were the rest of the enslaved crew and nearly a dozen other bondspeople, including Smalls’s wife and two children. He and his co-conspirators had certainly planned their mission well. As Smalls had predicted, the Planter’s white officers, tired from a week’s absence from the city, ignored Confederate naval policy requiring that one officer stay with the ship and went ashore for the evening. Smalls also took to heart a remark made by one of his fellow crewma ...

Very few know the story of the man known as the "Gullah Statesman." He was born, Robert Smalls, on April 5, 1839. His birthplace was Beaufort, a bustling waterfront town sitting on one of the Sea Islands, in what was known as the South Carolina lowcountry. Beaufort was known for its manificent harbor, and large antebellum mansions with very rich plantation owners. One of those owners was John K. McKee, who purchased a young female slave from Ashdale Plantation on Lady's Island, SC, to work for him as a house slave. The young female was named Lydia, descended of slaves from Guinea, in West Africa. As was common practice during those times, slave owners felt a sense of entitlement concerning their slaves. This allowed them to take certain female slaves for themselves, without conscience, to sleep with. In fact, many white men of the time felt a general sense of entitlement, which enabled them to view any slave as fair game. When Lydia gave birth to a biracial son, Robert, it was widely assumed that McKee wa ...
Gray this is one for you "Cuz". USS Mason Proudly We Served The men of the Mason began their miltary service like any other anyone else by going to boot camp. They were sent to a new facility, Camp Robert Smalls at Great Lakes, Illinois. The camp's name was unique. Robert Smalls was a hero of the American Civil War. He had commandeered a Confedrate freighter and navigated it skillfully to the North. Smalls later went on to serve five terms in the United States Congress. But Camp Robert Smalls had another meaning, too. It was completely segregated and was separated from the main base by railroad tracks. It was a special disappointment for recruits from the South to find Jim Crow was waiting for them in Great Lakes, Illinois. There were negative experiences with white sailors at the camp. The only black sailors these men had ever seen were stewards and they either took time to accept or didn't want to accept these men as their equals. The future Mason crewmembers were much more comfortable in Chicago, just ...

Greetings Everyone: The following words were written by the Honorable Robert Smalls in 1875. Robert Smalls was the first Black man to be elected to the House of Representatives from South Carolina in 1875. He was a former slave and a hero of the Civil War. This is what he wrote 137 years ago: " The highest right of a citizen is the right to vote for the candidate of his choice and to have his vote counted as cast. The Constitution of the United States guarantees this right. It is not a question of fitness, intelligence, wealth, color, or previous servitude but a right secured by the law of the country and bestowed upon all." Please pass this on to family and friends. Vote on November 6th !! It is Your Power, It is Your Decision, Vote !!" Eva Doyle
