It boggles my mind that Robert Rodriguez can make "El Mariachi" for $7000 and have it be so good as to gross almost 300 times that, yet these movies get made with budgets that are probably more than $7000 and are such crap. I guess that's the difference in talent. This movie isn't so bad it's good, it's just so bad it's horrible. Bigfoot is about 30 or 50 feet tall (I'm not sure, but his size changes, so it doesn't matter), CGI, stomps around like a 2 year old with a full dirty diaper, and his favorite way to kill someone is to grab them and bite off their head which produces zero blood. The main "stars" are Danny Boneduce and Barry Williams, proving why they had trouble getting work after "The Partridge Family" and ...

So I wasn't there...but I feel like this is how it must have went down. Sometime in the early to mid 90s...Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez are sitting around a table...discussing a movie they want to make together. They decide each one gets to direct one hour of the film. Tarantino takes the first half...decides to make a movie about this tandem of bandit brothers murdering their way through Texas in an attempt to secure passage to Mexico. Solid character development, an iconic standoff scene in a liquor store, Harvey Kietel as a priest that has lost his faith in the wake of the death of his wife...and George Clooney as truly the coolest you've ever seen George Clooney. Rob Rod then decides 'Cool story bro...my turn'...and then precedes to write an abortion of a film in which all of the sudden they end up in a bar of vampire prostitutes...Cheech Marin plays seventeen different characters...some dude has a gun where his junk should be...oh and lest we forget the band playing with an ensemble of inst ...

I'm one of those people who believes that most good music died around 1970.  However, that was Mainstream Top 40, Radio music.  THAT'S NOT ALL MUSIC.  I knew that, and was exposed to so much good, new music duirng my time at Johnny D's.  The fact is, there's ALWAYS lots of great music coming out, you just have to look for it. During the 80s and 90s, the music on the radio was horrible, but there was such good stuff going on under the radar - and I created my special lists for that time.  It's my hope that if you lament the lack of good music today, you'll make an effort to at least investigate some of this awesome music. Finally saw Django Unchained last night. What a huge disappointment. I know Tarantino is pals with Robert Rodriguez but did Quentin really have to make a 19th century version of the equally superficial Machete? I like Tarantino. I've got no axe to grind. And the first 30 minutes were fabulous. But it went off the rails when Django ditched the blue boy valet costume and went riding off in his new duds, with Jim Croce's insipid "I've Got a Name" playing in the BG. I thought it was a joke, and would screech to a halt like Jungle Boogie in Pulp Fiction. But no. We got the full dose, behind picturesque shots of mountains in the snow. Somewhere in movie land, Mister Pink and Mister Brown were laughing their *** off.

Today I decided to revisit Sin City having only seen it a handful of times in the past. It's honestly one of the most underrated films I've ever come across. That's not to say it went completely under the radar (evidently it's a relatively well known film), I just rarely hear it talked about. Aesthetically it's unlike anything I've ever seen before: an interestingly explored mix of live action and stylised graphic. The dialogue and monologues in this film really stick with me and each story is as poignant as the last. It's very refreshing to see a film that just doesn't hold back. In terms of graphic novel adaptations it makes Watchmen look like a PG. If you're a fan of Film Noir or Tarantino I cant recommend it enough. And if you're wondering why it feels somewhat 'Tarantino-esk' that could well be down to the fact that he guest directed it (seriously, why isn't this film more talked about). When all is said and done I think Robert Rodriguez best film is Planet Terror. It has the perfect amount of fun and (yeah, actually) drama - but the later is very cleverly mixed into the splatter and gore. I still believe the whole hospital sequence is a nod to Umberto Lenzi's Nightmare City.

As a piece of cinema it's the same kind of entertainingly violent but substanceless pastiche Robert Rodriguez made with Machete, which is great, only with stranger pretentions of political point-making totally undercut by an obvious enjoyment and relish derived from all the gratuitous sexism/degradation (see slave boob, and strangely sexual hammer/skull power fetish), prevocatively-for-its-own-sake use of the N word (100 + times makes Spike Lee's coments about Tarantino's fixation seem well founded) and thuddingly long winded illustrations of the obvious, I.e. slavery is/was disgusting, and racism is bad, as bad as being pulled apart by dogs (which we're however invited to laugh at i think, amusin ...
