Robert James Waller 'The Bridges of Madison County, If you read only one book this year, make it this one!
So, I got tagged in the book-tag-list thing… I was tagged by James Gandy and Janell Julian Abel - so blame them. After much over-thinking I am happy to post my top 10 and (because I feel that I must) attempt to explain a few of them. I feel shamefully under-read. In no particular order, here is a list of ten books that changed my outlook or thought process. 7. The Bridges of Madison County - Robert James Waller. This book is pandering, insipid crap, but you might recall that when it came out it was a phenomenon, grown men were weeping when they read it. When I read it, I realized that what is popular is not (necessarily) good. It's like the literary equivalent of the Transformers franchise…with bridges. And that's a great lesson to learn earlier than later. Clint Eastwood’s movie version is actually very good, watch that instead. 3. The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy - Douglas Adams. This four-part trilogy is like a much more accessible version Catch-22 or anything Stephen Hawking says about ...
Thank you Koral Dasgupta . Here go the books which changed my life or have stayed with me ever since. 1) Bridges of Madison County by Robert James Waller - I was reading this while falling in love with Ravi. Both the book and me had one thing in common. A man with a camera. And yes till date, every time I reach the page where Robert Kincaid dies, I cry copius tears. It fills me with the sad thought of losing Ravi Walia. 2) Who moved my cheese? By Dr. Spencer Johnson - This one was a life changer. I picked it up while getting in the Rajdhani train all low, nervous and lost. When I got down at Nizammuddin after reading the book, I had awakened the winner inside me. 3) Yuganta by Irawati Karve - Read this as a part of a show research last year. Changed the way I thought about any epic written. Ultimately its all about the pov. 4) Jonathon Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach - This one taught me to fly without the fears. 5) Love Story by Erich Segal - Ultimate story of love, loss and sacrifice. I am a die hard ...

Aye, lets look at ol' Uncle BJ's reading list, shall we? He is currently reading 4 books simultaneously because he has the attention span of a cork-screw. First we have "Angela's Ashes", an account of growing up poor in 1930's Ireland. Probably the best novel I have and a Pulitzer Prize-winner, by the way. Next we have *** Science tackles the afterlife" by Mary Roach, an extremely humorous look at quack scientists and spiritual mediums over the years. Also,"The Believing Brain; From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies-How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths (Michael Shermer)...pretty self explanatory. Finally, "Old Songs in a New Cafe", Robert James Waller, author of The Bridges of Madison County. This is sort of a novelists work of non-fiction, not a book I would choose off-hand but am pleasantly suprised, as we all are by random selection sometime. I heartily recommend all these, dear reader.
