Why I smoke a pipe. I routinely use this missive as a broad sheet to answer the question of "Why I smoke a pipe". A question so often asked by many of my anti-tobacco friends. Friends, I might add, that give me a hard time whenever I light up my tobacco pipe. You see, I'm a reader, and my heroes are those I read about. And usually they involve men who smoked a pipe. Run your eyes down the list below of names and see how many you recognize. Collectively, I would argue, these men actually made the 20th Century, both literally and figuratively. To a man, all avid pipe smokers, each and every one. Moreover, many lived well beyond the average lifespan of their day, many passing in their mid- to late-eighties. You see, pipe smokers, on average, live longer than non pipe smokers. And lead more fulfilling lives, I might add. The other night, Brenda was telling me how she'd carefully searched my bookshelves before purchasing a gift... and that lead to a longer conversation about how I sort my books. I realized that there are only three authors that are sorted and set out independently. James Beard, John McPhee, and Robert Fulghum. What this says about me, I don't know. (Richard Rhodes only looks shelved by author, but I only own a select few of his books, he's actually the core of my strategic weapons section.)
This quotation is by Robert Fulghum and is one of my favorites...

Tuesday’s birthday boy is one of my favorite authors of all time Robert Fulghum: “The world does not need tourists who ride by in a bus clucking their tongues. The world as it is needs those who will love it enough to change it, with what they have, where they are.” I think the follow up quote to this is that there are three kinds of people in the world – those that make things happen, those that watch things happen and those who wonder what happened? The exciting thing is that each day we have the opportunity to be that clucking tourist on the bus who only talks about the challenges in this world or the one who dives in and tries to make a difference with their God-given gifts. I know you my friends and I hope today God is telling you to jump in and make a difference!! Have a great day!

The older I get, the more I realize the importance of exercising the various dimensions of my body, soul, mind, and heart. Taken together, these aspects give me a sense of wholeness. I want to be a whole human being rather than one who limps on one leg because I don't know how to use all of my parts. Intellectual, emotional, and physical activity are not separate entities. Rather, they are dimensions of the same human being. ~ ~ ~Robert Fulghum

Shettima to Jonathan - It's Our Duty to Unearth Boko Haram Ghosts for Negotiation Borno State governor Alhaji Kashim Shettima has challenged both the federal and the state government to join hands to discover the Boko Haram ghosts in order to negotiate with them. The challenge was the highpoint of the address Governor Shettima presented to President Goodluck Jonathan on the occasion of the president's working visit to the state yesterday. The president had, on Thursday in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, said that the federal government would not grant amnesty to ghosts under the guise of Boko Haram members. But the governor in his address yesterday said, "We are convinced beyond any doubt that the ultimate resolution of this crisis lies in the resort to a political solution." Quoting from a renowned American author, Robert Fulghum, Governor Shettima said: "We must know and accept that peace is not something we just wish for; it's something we have to make ourselves, it is a gift we offer to ourselves. Why - because early childhood is the foundation for all subsequent disciplines. The world of early childhood acknowledges, expects, accepts and celebrates differences. The field exists to understand how learning occurs – how it begins, what makes it easy, hard, and how to adapt curriculum to a variety of learners. Early childhood pays foremost attention to the learner. Teaching and learning go-together, you can’t have one without the other.
