Leonaard Peltier a citizen of the Anishinabe and Lakota Nations, is a father, a grandfather, an artist, a writer, and an Indigenous rights activist. He has spent more than twenty-seven years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Amnesty International considers him a "political prisoner" who should be "immediately and unconditionally released." To the international community, the case of Leonard Peltier is a stain on America's Human Rights record. Nelson Mandela, Rigoberta Menchu, the U.N. High Commissioner on Human Rights, the Dalai Lama, the European Parliament, the Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights, and Rev. Jesse Jackson are only a few who have called for his freedom. To many Indigenous Peoples, Leonard Peltier is a symbol of the long history of abuse and repression they have endured. The National Congress of American Indians and the Assembly of First Nations, representing the majority of First Nations in the U.S. and Canada, have repeatedly called for Leonard Peltier's freedom. Leonard Pelti ...
i just learned that there were 25 new cases of HIV reported on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and that their really needing medical workers up there. i feel a calling to go and become an HIV/AIDS educator/activist and medical worker up there. Just need to figure out how to go about it, it might be just what i need. But i need help and support, i don't want to do it alone. i have the opportunity to buy a house not far from there and the rent is only $300 a month for a decent 2 bedroom house with an office and a nice yard. Anyone interested in going with me? Anyone interested at all?

Today in history: December 15, 1890 - Sitting Bull killed by U.S. government agents trying to detain him. Sitting Bull was a Lakota Sioux chief who refused to submit to U.S. government policies designed to strip his people of their identity, their dignity and their sacred land and force them onto reservations. He led years of resistance. He is perhaps best known for the Battle of the Little Bighorn against Custer and the 7th Cavalry in 1876. On December 15, 1890, James McLaughlin, the U.S. Indian Agent at Fort Yates on Standing Rock Agency, feared that Sitting Bull was about to flee the reservation with the Ghost Dancers, so he ordered police to arrest him. Sitting Bull refused to submit, and a firefight ensued in which he and seven of his supporters were killed. Two weeks later on December 29, 1890, the 7th Cavalry carried out the Wounded Knee Massacre on the Lakota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Between 150 and 300 men, women and children of the Lakota Sioux were killed. (image: mural of Sitting Bull)

Russell Charles Means (November 10, 1939 – October 22, 2012) was an Oglala Sioux activist for the rights of Native American people. He became a prominent member of the American Indian Movement (AIM) after joining the organization in 1968, and helped organize notable events that attracted national and international media coverage. The organization split in 1993, in part over the 1975 murder of Anna Mae Aquash, the leading woman activist in AIM. Means was active in international issues of indigenous peoples, including working with groups in Central and South America, and with the United Nations for recognition of their rights. He was active in politics at his native Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and at the state and national level. Since 1992, he acted in numerous films and released his own music CD. He published his autobiography Where White Men Fear to Tread in 1995. Good journey to you, brother. Your work here was well done and I know you are now with the ancestors around the council fire.

A voter registration drive in 2002 helped gain support for the Democratic candidate for the US Senate, and turnout in Shannon County and across the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation helped narrowly elect Tim Johnson to office. The county has the distinction of having the highest percentage of Democratic votes for President in the 2004 election of any county in the US (85%) and in 2008 with 88.69% of votes cast for Barack Obama. Tonight about 45 min ago, the owner of the Arrowhead Foods in White Clay, Nebraska brutally engaged in a violent act against a Native American Male of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota. The Native American Male had given Arrowhead Foods his business on EBT night, and when he left the store, the Owner/Manager Had chased him in the parking lot and then onto the road and told the Native American to leave, the Native American man had refused and told the White Owner/Manager he did nothing wrong but ask for some change to make it home or whatever his business was when the white owner had punched and then shoved the Native man down to the ground and continued to beat on him... I was so much in a freak mode that this was actually happening, I couldn't do nothing but watch, and then an older Native American woman told this white man he could have did this in a different way, that the man was drunk and he didn't need to beat on him like that, and that he even gave the his business... We made it back from Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Our family got to be part of a Vacation Bible School for Native American Kids. We camped out near the Reservation and would pick the kids up for daily for VBS. We shared the "Good News" with them and some even excepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. These kids have many challeneges that most of us will never have to face. Most of them are really hurting inside and need Love and Affection. It was an eye opener for us and we will never forget.

J Medicine Hat, a popular Native American comedian and stage hypnotist who often performed in Western New York, died unexpectedly Monday. "We're all devastated," said Ilene C. Miklos, entertainment coordinator for the Seneca Gaming Corp. "He was with us since Day 1. He would come up at least once a year and perform multiple shows for us, and his shows always sold out. "But he was also one of the kindest, most big-hearted teddy bears you'd ever meet, the sweetest man, and very funny," she said. "The first time you met him he would hug you." "He was a comedian first, so he knew how to bring hypnotism into a comedy club and make a buzz out of doing this outrageous stuff," said Rob Lederman, owner and operator of Rob's Comedy Playhouse in Amherst. Medicine Hat, 52, was born Jent Monk. In a 1999 interview with The Buffalo News, he said that Medicine Hat was his "Gramma's maiden name. She grew up on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. We had a productive trip on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. We were able to feed and clothe many and we provided medical treatment to several. Eagle Rock Christian Center has been going to Pine Ridge for the past seven years. Apostle Lisa Nelson has diligently followed her vision to make a difference for the Native people. She led teams in building a church, providing food and clothing. But most importantly she has loved and taught others how to love the people. When on an ER team in Pine Ridge one can see the love between the Lakota people and the members of Eagle Rock. I have been going for the last 4 years and in that time I can see huge growth in the people and improvement on the land. The church built is not only used as a church but also as a community center and to help house native families who find themselves homeless. It is a joy to see how Apostle Lisa’s vision flourished. We had giveaways in three communities. For each giveaway we loaded up clothes, food, school supplies and medical suppl ...
