Chairman Menendez Joins Group of Bipartisan Senators in Letter to Sec. Kerry on Missing Mexican Students WASHINGTON, DC – In a letter sent to Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday, a group of 14 Senators including Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-NJ), wrote to express their deep concern for the lives of the 43 young students that disappeared on September 26th in the State of Guerrero, Mexico. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.). The senators asked the research arm of Congress to investigate what they called an “alarming number” of new state laws that make it “significantly harder” for millions of voters to cast ballots. The report calculated the direct cost to would-be voters in the 17 states where voters must present a drivers’ license or other state identification at polling places. The price for drivers’ licenses ranges f ...

So the Campaign Finance Amendment, that democrats want to pass as law, limits the amount of money that can be used during an election campaign. Congress gets frustrated when the defense of political speech puts their ideas second to the people, so now they want to limit fundraising for political speech. There are 21 US Senate seats up for re-election in 2014 that are currently held by Democrats, with more than half of those being vulnerable. These seats were won during the 2008 sweep year when President Barack Obama brought millions of new first time voters to the polls, and helping many of the down-ticket candidates along the way. While the Republicans are defending 14 seats in mostly conservative states, Democrats are defending a mixture of liberal, moderate, and conservative seats. The GOP would need to swing 6 seats to take control of the US Senate. Safe Democratic Seats There are nine seats that will probably stay safely in Democratic hands: Delaware - Chris *** Illinois - Richard Durbin; Massachusetts 2013 Special Election - Open; Hawaii - Special Election; New Jersey - Frank Lautenberg (Retiring); New Mexico - Tom Udall; Oregon - Jeff Merkley; Rhode Island - Jack Reed; Virginia - Mark Warner. It was supposed to be a joke - a skit during the Golden Globes telecast showing actress Julia Louis Dreyfus puffing on a vaporized e-cigarette. In the skit, hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler poked fun at Dreyfus, who was then shown looking very cool, in sunglasses, with e-cigarette in hand. Some members of Congress, however, are not laughing, CBS News' Jan Crawford reports. They accuse the Golden Globes, which also showed actor Leonardo DiCaprio puffing on an e-cigarette during the broadcast, of glamorizing smoking. "You're killing the next generation of fans in your movies," Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., said on the Senate floor. Four senators, including Durbin, fired off angry letters to NBC, which broadcast the show, and to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gave out the awards. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., was one of them. He said e-cigarettes are a gateway to smoking. "There's a reason that Big Tobacco companies are buying the e-cigarette manufacturers, and that is they see a way to indu ...
Take a moment to take action: Make a call for disability leadership at home and abroad The United States Senate is again considering ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). This treaty calls on nations to recognize that “all persons are equal before the law, to prohibit discrimination on the basis of disability and guarantee equal legal protection.” We've read the CRPD, and we've found: The CRPD does not impede the rights of parents to homeschool; The CRPD does not take authority away from parents; The CRPD states that the primary concern is the best interest of the person with the disability; The CRPD affirms the family as the primary unit of society. You can read the treaty here: CRPD was negotiated in 2006 by then-president George W. Bush and has broad bi-partisan support, including veterans' groups. The CRPD also has the support of Illinois's senators, Mark Kirk and Richard Durbin. The CRPD does not require any change to the laws of the Unit ...
Today's news from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.): Food Safety: A bipartisan coalition of 75 lawmakers is fighting for changes to new federal food safety rules, saying the proposed requirements could be “severely detrimental” to farmers of produce and even force some out of business. Bernie Sanders,” the Springfield, Mo., News-Leader reported. Budget Set for Tighter Vote in Senate: Supporters of a budget agreement worked over the weekend to secure the necessary votes in the Senate to approve the two-year deal, which they expect will pass—but by a much narrower margin than it won in the House last week. Sen. Richard Durbin said on Sunday he feels there will be strong Democratic support for the bill, but hasn't yet secured the Republican votes needed to clear a key procedural hurdle this week. Some Democrats have reservations about the bill and could vo ...

Left to right: U.S. Sens. Richard Durbin (D., Ill.), John McCain (R., Ariz.) and Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) speak to the media after the Senate passed the immigration bill on Thursday. The Senate easily passed the most sweeping changes to immigration law in nearly 30 years, sending the landmark measure to the House, where conservative lawmakers threaten to slow the drive to grant legal status to many of the estimated 11 million people living illegally in the U.S. The 68-32 vote Thursday marked a major step in a long-debated overhaul to the immigration system and drew ceremonial flourish. Vice President Joe Biden presided over the proceedings, and lawmakers rose from their desks to cast their votes, a rarely used gesture of formality. Fourteen Republicans joined all of the Senate Democrats and two independents to support the measure, in a clear marker of how far the political calculus of immigration reform has shifted in the six years since a similar effort stalled on the Senate floor. Immigration Law in Ame ...
VOUR: GENERAL SEJUSSA ARRIVES IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! General Sejussa has landed in the USA where he is scheduled to meet senators to brief them on the situation in Uganda as well as other issues that affect the country. The general plans to interact with Ugandans in America and inform them on how they can participate in bringing changes in Uganda. Today, ADHA President Susan Savage announced that the United States Senate unanimously approved Senate Resolution 182 yesterday congratulating ADHA on the 100th anniversary of the profession. What is the purpose of this guide? The Immigration Policy Center has written this guide to provide policymakers, the media, and the public with an easy-to-understand guide to the main components of S. 744 and the purpose behind them. The guide follows the structure of the bill, with a separate section addressing the cost-benefit analysis of S. 744, a resources page, and a glossary. The Basics What is S. 744? The “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act,” or S. 744, is a broad-based proposal for reforming the U.S. immigration system written by a bipartisan group of eight Senators known as the “Gang of Eight.” Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY), John McCain (R-AZ), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Michael Bennet (D-CO), and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) drafted S. 744 in the spring of 2013.The bill addresses all aspects of the immigration process from border and enforcement issues to legal immigration reforms. It makes change ...
“Zero Dark Thirty,” a nominee for Sunday’s Oscar for Best Picture, reignited debate about whether the waterboarding of terrorism suspects was torture. This practice, which ended in 2003, was used on only three suspects. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of American prison inmates are kept in protracted solitary confinement that arguably constitutes torture and probably violates the Eighth Amendment prohibition of “cruel and unusual punishments.” Noting that half of all prison suicides are committed by prisoners held in isolation, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) has prompted an independent assessment of solitary confinement in federal prisons. State prisons are equally vulnerable to Eighth Amendment challenges concerning whether inmates are subjected to “substantial risk of serious harm.” America, with 5 percent of the world’s population, has 25 percent of its prisoners. Mass incarceration, which means a perpetual crisis of prisoners re-entering society, has generated understanding of solitary conf ...
Among its particulars, if passed, would be the creation of a "Lawful Prospective Immigrant" status, that could be applied for by the nation's estimated 11 million undocumented residents. The new visa would allow its holders to legally live and work in the United States, as well as leave the country for short periods of time. After eight years visa holders who passed the program would be allowed to apply for full citizenship. Earlier this month Democratic Gang of Eight members Sen. Richard Durbin and Sen Bob Menendez indicated the group was weighing similar a proposal that would extend the wait to 10 years. But Saturday a leading Republican in the group, Sen. Marco Rubio, immediately lambasted the White House version as "dead on arrival" in Congress. "This legislation is half baked and seriously flawed," he said in a statement last night. "It would actually make our immigration problems worse. If actually proposed, the president's bill would be dead on arrival in Congress, leaving us with unsecured borders ...
Democrats Finally Admitting Obamacare is Bad 12/13/12 From the Washington Examiner: Sixteen Democratic Senators who voted for the Affordable Care Act are asking that one of its fundraising mechanisms, a 2.3 percent tax on medical devices scheduled to take effect January 1, be delayed. Echoing arguments made by Republicans against Obamacare, the Democratic Senators say the levy will cost jobs — in a statement Monday, Sen. Al Franken called it a “job-killing tax” — and also impair American competitiveness in the medical device field. The senators, who made the request in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, are Franken, Richard Durbin, Charles Schumer, Patty Murray, John Kerry, Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar, Joseph Lieberman, Ben Nelson, Robert Casey, Debbie Stabenow, Barbara Mikulski, Kay Hagan, Herb Kohl, Jeanne Shaheen, and Richard Blumenthal. All voted for Obamacare. Two other Democrats, senators-elect Joe Donnelly and Elizabeth Warren, also signed the letter. Donnelly voted for .. ...
hEY *** DURBIN How bout you SUCK MY BALLS. On Tuesday, February 12, career gun control advocate Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) held a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing inappropriately titled, "Protecting Our Communities While Respecting the Second Amendment." Much of the hearing featured a severe lack of respect for the Second Amendment, though, as the panel was stocked with several gun control supporters and was presumably aimed at invigorating the country's waning appetite for anti-gun legislation. The attack on guns began at the outset of the hearing, with Sen. Durbin's opening remarks. In his statement, Sen. Durbin endorsed all manner of federal gun control proposals, including legislation criminalizing the private sales of firearms, a ban on popular semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, and a magazine capacity limit. Showing his disdain for gun ownership, the senator seemed to set gun owners apart from other Americans when he asked rhetorically, "Can we protect a person's right to own a firearm and st . ...

“Social Security has not added one penny to the deficit.” — Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), Nov. 27, 2012 In 2011, we evaluated a similar statement about Social Security and gave it a relatively rare rating — “true but false” — which seemed to please no one. Yet as the “fiscal cliff” negotiations have heated up, Democrats have once again been using this talking point to shield Social Security from the chopping block. Durbin, to his credit, in a speech to the Center for American Progress this week, acknowledged that Social Security’s long-term financing is an important issue that cannot be deferred. He advocates creating a commission that would separately address how to ensure 75 years of solvency to the program. So we don’t mean to pick on Durbin since plenty of Democrats in recent days have made similar comments. But we remain troubled by the reemergence of this talking point, especially given the further decline in Social Security’s finances in the past year. We do not think this . ...

Dear Village Voice Advertiser, I'm writing on behalf of dozens of human rights organizations, child advocacy groups, and hundreds of thousands of concerned New Yorkers and U.S. citizens. Scott Tobias, Christine Brennan and Jeff Mars were executives at Village Voice Media Holdings LLC, the owner of Backpage.com. However, on September 24th, 2012, these three executives shed their responsibility and the shadow of Backpage.com by leaving Village Voice Media with their 13 newspapers in tow, and choosing to avoid the public relations disaster Backpage.com rightly caused by opening a new company, "Voice Media Group." On October 5th, 2012, U.S. Senators Mark Kirk, Marco Rubio, Richard Blumenthal, John Cornyn, Richard Durbin, and Daniel Akaka wrote to Scott Tobias, CEO of the newly formed "Voice Media Group," and expressed their disappointment in the lack of action these executives took to end the sexual exploitation of minors on Backpage.com and insisted the executives “take the steps necessary to terminate the ...
(Carolyn Kaster/AP) “When I first came into office, the head of the Senate Republicans said, ‘my number one priority is making sure President Obama’s a one-term president.’ Now, after the election, either he will have succeeded in that goal or he will have failed at that goal.” — President Obama, interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” recorded on Sept. 12, 2012, and aired on Sept. 23 “It was no surprise, because the senator from Kentucky, who just spoke, announced at the beginning, four years ago, exactly what his strategy would be. He said, his number-one goal was to make sure that Barack Obama was a one-term president.” — Sen. Richard Durbin (R-Ill.), on the Senate floor, Sept. 21, 2012 “Ed Rendell, who has criticized the president (objecting, for example, to the Obama campaign's attack on private equity), also argues that Obama has been constrained by an unprecedented obduracy in his Republican opposition. ‘I can't ever recall a newly elected president being faced with the leader o ...

How about Pelosi? Kerry? Here is the list of D's in the senate who are supposedly Catholic: Roman Catholic -Mark Begich (D-Alaska), Maria Cantwell (D-Washington), Bob Casey, Jr. (D-Pennsylvania), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Richard Durbin (D-Illinois), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York), Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), John Kerry (D-Massachusetts), Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana), Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), Joe Manchin (D-West Virginia), Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri), Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey), Barbara Mikulski (D-Maryland), Patty Murray (D-Washington), Jack Reed (D-Rhode Island). It was a historic day August 15, 2012 when thousands of undocumented youth lined up to apply for DREAM Relief at Navy Pier. Estimates were from 11,000 to 13,000 all the way to Columbus Drive. This was a major breakthrough in our Comprehensive Immigration Reform movement since 2007, protesting the Sensenbrenner bill that would have criminalized anyone assisting undocumented immigrants. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (IL) made sure this bill did not pass. Sen. Richard Durbin (IL) had sponsored the DREAM Act in the Senate in 2001 and it languished there until 2011 when it had 55 votes but short of 5 to overcome the Republican filibuster. Rep. Luis Gutierrez successfully passed the DREAM Act in the House 216 vs. 208 and they have no irrational tradition of filibuster. And Mayor Rahm Emanuel redefined DREAMERs as PATRIOTS, who love their home country, with courage, conviction and character. Of course, President Barack Obama made DREAM RELIEF a reality. This is what America means to me and to the world. Diverse c ...
Durbin urges merchants to reject proposed settlement en. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., denounced a proposed settlement of claims that the interchange fees charged by MasterCard Worldwide, Visa Inc. and a number of issuing banks are unfair and violate provisions of the Sherman Antitrust Act. Durbin authored an amendment to the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act that gave the Federal Reserve Board authority to cap debit interchange fees. The more than $7 billion settlement proposal agreement was divulged in July 2012 by lawyers appointed by the Brooklyn Federal District Court to represent the nearly 7 million merchants in the class. If Federal Court Judge John Gleeson accepts the settlement, which merchant lawyers said will be submitted for the court's preliminary approval by Oct. 19, it would be the largest settlement in Sherman Antitrust history. Nonetheless, some of the largest retailers and retail organizations in the country, organizations such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and The Nati ...

Among other provisions, the bill would have allowed employees to sue for punitive damages (as opposed to just back pay) and would increase penalties against employers who engage in wage discrimination based on gender. The measure would also make it illegal for employers to retaliate against workers for talking about their wages with each other. Republicans decried the bill as unnecessary and a boon to trial lawyers, while Democrats continued to hammer their election-year theme of the GOP being out of touch with women. The President expressed strong support for the bill. Sen. Richard Durbin voted YES.send e-mail or see bio Sen. Mark Kirk voted Not Voting.send e-mail or see bio
