Some Civics for everyone's edification: As anyone who passed 10th-grade history knows, if the president dies or is removed from office, he’s succeeded by the vice president, followed by the speaker of the house (currently Republican Rep. John Boehner) and then the president pro tempore of the Senate (Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch). But thanks to the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, there’s a much more extensive contingency plan. If the president, vice president, speaker and Senate president pro tempore all die, the line of succession is as follows: the secretaries of State, Treasury and Defense, the attorney general, then the secretaries of the Interior, Agriculture, Commerce, Labor, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, Energy, Education, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security.

In case you are unable to open my previous post regarding the ten liberal superstitions that I hear every day as part of the liberal mantra... Read it and make your decisions using facts rather than fantasies.. By Kate Bachelder Oct. 30, 2014 7:50 p.m. ET A hallmark of progressive politics is the ability to hold fervent beliefs, in defiance of evidence, that explain how the world works—and why liberal solutions must be adopted. Such political superstitions take on a new prominence during campaign seasons as Democratic candidates trot out applause lines to rally their progressive base and as the electorate considers their voting records. Here’s a Top 10 list of liberal superstitions on prominent display during the midterm election campaign: 1. Spending more money improves education. The U.S. spent $12,608 per student in 2010—more than double the figure, in inflation-adjusted dollars, spent in 1970—and spending on public elementary and secondary schools has surpassed $600 billion. CDC Director Frieden Faces Congress = Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Tom Frieden faced the wrath of lawmakers in a three-hour hearing in the House of Representatives on Thursday over the government's response to Ebola. Lawmakers of both parties scolded Frieden for what they characterized as an insufficient response to Ebola's arrival in the United States, in the aftermath of the death of Liberian Thomas Eric Duncan and the subsequent infections of nurses Nina Pham and Amber Vinson. Some lawmakers, inducing Louisiana's Republican Sen. David Vitter, are calling on Frieden to resign. Others, including House Speaker John Boehner, are calling for increased foreign travel restrictions. But Frieden said that would mean the United States would no longer be able to check people for fever and potential Ebola contacts. "We wouldn't be able to provide all that information as we do now to state and local health officials," he said. While Frieden was able to offer some new details on Ms. Vinson's c ...

3rd Party Candidates Could Tip Senate Races A pizza deliveryman in North Carolina, a "libertarian cop" in Kentucky and an Alaska candidate - but not the one who was expected - hope to do what a Kansas businessman did this week: shake up Senate races as third-party candidates, an often-dismissed lot. Greg Orman isn't a household name, but he's getting attention now. The independent Senate candidate in Kansas fared so well in his third-party bid to unseat three-term Republican Sen. Pat Roberts that the Democrat in the race, Chad Taylor, abruptly canceled his candidacy on Wednesday. With that, conservative Kansas landed on the list of conceivable, if improbable, Democratic gains in the national battle for Senate control. Republicans must pick up six seats in November to win the majority, and the new uncertainty over Roberts' fate complicates their drive. Kansas Republicans, worried about Orman possibly consolidating anti-Roberts sentiment, challenged the legality of Taylor's withdrawal. The Kansas secretary ...
Daily Kos Elections Morning Digest Leading Off: KS-Sen: Wow! For the second time in one week, a Democrat seeking statewide office in a red state has dropped out in favor of an independent candidate who, as the polls tell it, has a better shot at beating the Republican incumbent. First it happened in Alaska; this time, it's Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor, the Democratic nominee for Senate in Kansas who'd raised absolutely bupkes in his quest to unseat Republican Sen. Pat Roberts. And this is very good news for Team Blue, because wealthy independent Greg Orman had been running a much stronger campaign—and what's more, PPP recently found him beating Roberts by a 43-33 margin in what was at the time a hypothetical two-way race. In a three-way, Roberts clung to a slim 32-25 lead over Taylor, with Orman pulling 23 percent, meaning the anti-incumbent vote was badly split. And Taylor actually trailed Roberts 43-39, so Orman is definitely the preferred horse. Now, we're talking about Kansas, so you ...
I guess Senator Ted Cruz is going to run for president in 2016...are you SURPRISED? DALLAS – Republican Sen. Ted Cruz sounds increasingly like he's made up his mind to run for president in 2016, telling an influential gathering of conservative activists Saturday that "we are part of a grassroots fire that is sweeping this country." "I'm convinced we're going to win in 2014, and 2016 is going to be even better," the Texas Republican said during a summit of Americans for Prosperity, the political arm of the billionaire GOP donors Charles and David Koch. "And in the year 2017, a Republican president in the Rose Garden is going to sign a bill repealing every word of Obamacare."

Forget About the President's; Sen. McConnell's Personal 'War on Coal' Revealed... = The president of the United Mine Workers of America says Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell needs to explain why his wife joined the board of a group seeking to eliminate coal from the country's energy diet. On Friday, Yahoo News reported that McConnell's wife, former labor secretary Elaine Chao, is a board member of Bloomberg Philanthropies, which provided a $50-million grant to the Sierra Club's "Beyond Coal" initiative. Chao joined the group in 2012, a year after it announced it was funding a four-year environmental campaign to "move the country from coal to clean energy." Last weekend, the UMWA endorsed McConnell's Democratic challenger, Alison Lundergan Grimes. The union also voiced concern when Sierra Club initiative was announced three years ago. UMWA President Cecil E. Roberts said Chao is free to join whatever board she chooses, but he was critical of her involvement with Bloomberg Philanthropies. "One has to wonder ...

Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell's newest ad is a chutzpahdik piece of work. The spot is narrated by McConnell's wife, former Commerce Secretary Elaine Chao, who stiffly sneers: "Have you ever noticed how some liberals feel entitled to speak on behalf of all women—as if every woman agrees with Barack Obama?" A narrator then gets to the heart of the matter and makes some astonishing claims: "Mitch McConnell co-sponsored the original Violence Against Women Act. He's always supported its purpose. Mitch voted for even stronger protections than Obama's agenda will allow." This is all so tendentious it's amazing. McConnell did co-sponsor VAWA when it was first introduced in 1991, but as Sahil Kapur at TPM explains, that bill never came up for a vote. He did not sponsor the legislation in 1993, when it finally did advance to the floor—and then he voted against it! READ MORE:

Below is an insightful article by Caroline Glick entitled "Column One: The Threat of Blowback. This article appeared today in the Jerusalem Post. Watching the undoing, in a week, of victories that US forces won in Iraq at great cost over many years, Americans are asking themselves what, if anything, should be done. What can prevent the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) – the al-Qaida offshoot that President Barack Obama derided just months ago as a bunch of amateurs – from taking over Iraq? And what is at stake for America – other than national pride – if it does? Muddying the waters is the fact that the main actor that seems interested in fighting ISIS on the ground in Iraq is Iran. Following ISIS’s takeover of Mosul and Tikrit last week, the Iranian regime deployed elite troops in Iraq from the Quds Force, its foreign operations division. The Obama administration, along with Republican Sen. Lindsay Graham, views Iran’s deployment of forces in Iraq as an opportunity for the US. The US, . ...

Muh Roads! GOP senator seeking union and black support BY EMILY WAGSTER PETTUS Associated Press JACKSON — Six-term Republican Sen. Thad Cochran is trying to survive an intense tea party challenge in Mississippi by reaching out to union members and black voters — two groups that tradition ally support Democrats. But he risks a backlash from conservatives ready to support his opponent, state Sen. Chris McDaniel. Even as Cochran is running TV ads aimed at conservatives by saying he’s the only candidate who has “voted against Obamacare more than 100 times,” the former Senate Appropriations Committee chairman is traveling the state to remind people that he has brought home billions of federal dollars for projects that transcend party lines. He cites disaster relief, agriculture and nutrition programs, public education, military installations and highways. Cochran says McDaniel, who pledges to slash spending, could put those at risk. “My opponent says he’s not going to spend money like I spend mon ...
