Probably not. But they’re sure going to try. On Wednesday afternoon, the men and women, all in their late teens and twenties, convened at the Silicon Valley headquarters of LinkedIn, the business-oriented social network, for a 25-hour “hackathon” to develop software applications to spotlight the challenges faced by the nation’s roughly 11 million illegal immigrants and help push stalled immigration legislation. Billionaires' Advice For New College Grads 01.Steve Jobs: Live Each Day As If It Was Your Last When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, some day you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "no" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. ~Stanford University, 2005 02.Bill Gates: From Those To Whom Much Is Given, Much Is Expected My mother, who was filled with pride the day I was admitted here-never stopped pressing me to do more for others. Emily Chang Host of "Bloomberg West" My First Job: A Turtle-Sized Break October 28, 2013 A turtle had washed up on the north shore of Oahu. It wasn't a story that would make history. In truth, no one would talk about it on the island for more than 5 minutes -- but, to me, it was the biggest story in the world. It was the first story I was assigned to write for a newscast on Channel 4. It was the summer after my freshman year of college. I decided to return home to Hawaii for an unpaid internship at KITV, one of the local stations. A few months earlier, I realized I didn't want to be a doctor and dropped out of all my pre-med classes. Harvard didn't have a communications program, so if I wanted to become a reporter, I'd have to be entrepreneurial and find my own opportunities. When I got to KITV, I had to be aggressive and ask each of the reporters and anchors if I could "shadow" them when they went out in the field. Otherwise, I’d have to sit in the newsroom transcribing tape all day. I made myself as u ...

Reid Hoffman: Be Contrarian And Be Right Always think creatively and boldly. Where do you see a massive opportunity? Where do you think something is going to change, where you see something that most other people don't see? Part of being a successful entrepreneur is to be contrarian and to be right. It's the two that are particularly important because if it was obvious to everyone there's no market opportunity, there's no gap to go do something about it. But then you have to be right about it. ~UC Berkeley School of Information, 2011

Success isn't always vertical. -- Reid Hoffman In his 2012 commencement speech at Boston's Babson College, LinkedIn co-founder Hoffman touted the importance of the entrepreneurial spirit. While stressing the importance of building a wide network, Hoffman pointed out that success will likely not resemble climbing a ladder as many grew up to believe. Best advice: "Success…is no longer a simple ascension of steps. You need to climb sideways and sometimes down, and sometimes you need to swing from the jungle gym and establish your own turf somewhere else on the playground."
“The value of being connected and transparent is so high that the roadbumps of privacy issues are much lower in actual experience than people’s fears.” – Reid Hoffman, founder and executive chairman of LinkedIn

How to Find Opportunities in Your Social Network June 12, 2013 inShare2 Thirty years ago a landmark academic study demonstrated that most people who get new jobs through networking with others almost always get those jobs not from their closest friends or colleagues, but from those they didn’t really know as well. This principle, known as the “strength of weak ties,” has become famous as social networks have proliferated and people have struggled to understand how to extract value from them. LinkedIn’s own Co-Founder, Reid Hoffman, referenced the principle in his post last year, about the two types of professional relationships you should maintain: allies and acquaintances. If you’re looking for a new job (and half or more of LinkedIn members apparently are), then the weak-ties principal is worth paying close attention to. In fact, it’s worth knowing about for a lot of other reasons, also. If you’re a sales person looking for leads, or a venture capitalist looking for investments, or a corpo ...

Tours of Duty: The New Employer-Employee Compact by Reid Hoffman, Ben Casnocha, and Chris Yeh For most of the 20th century, the compact between employers and employees in the developed world was all about stability. Jobs at big corporations were secure: As long as the company did OK financially and the employee did his or her job, that job wouldn’t go away. And in the white-collar world, careers progressed along an escalator of sorts, offering predictable advancement to employees who followed the rules. Corporations, for their part, enjoyed employee loyalty and low turnover. Then came globalization and the Information Age. Stability gave way to rapid, unpredictable change. Adaptability and entrepreneurship became key to achieving and sustaining success. These changes demolished the traditional employer-employee compact and its accompanying career escalator in the U.S. private sector; they are in varying degrees of disarray elsewhere. We are not the first to point this out or to propos ...

I've tried to adapt some of Reid Hoffman's "Start-up of You" ideas to my professional life.
Reid Hoffman started his professional life with the intention of becoming an academic. But then he realized: "in order to be a professional scholar, you have to dedicate a vast majority of your career to writing esoteric books that only 50 people will understand." So instead, he got into the technology industry with a job at Apple, where he helped build eWorld, Apple's version of America Online. Next, he started a company called SocialNet. It failed. A friend of Hoffman's, Peter Thiel, recruited him to join a startup, PayPal. It sold to eBay in 2002. Then Hoffman went on a long trip to Australia. There, he decided to create an Internet company. I am done with the "women in tech" and "girls who code" narrative. I do not know any women who are working in tech who want to be compared, convened or benchmarked only with other women. We would be horribly offended if there were "men in tech" conferences -- and we would be shocked if there was an organization called "boys who code". We need to understand that these labels are sexist and limiting -- and we all can do better. How about "grateful people in tech" . . . let's start there. Women in tech are not pioneers (Little House on the Prairie-style) . . . women in tech are visionaries who are contributing and innovating at every level. So, ladies, the next time you support a "Women in Tech" conference, list or meet-up -- ask yourself, would Mark Zuckerberg, Reid Hoffman or Jack Dorsey appear at a "Men in Tech" conference (?) . . . probably not. We can do better. Women in tech need to be evaluated for our contributions -- on the exact same level, in every way, as our male counterparts. I'm SO over it ...
