After a brief period as interim President, Raimundo Saporta called for elections. The Club's treasurer, Luis de Carlos, resigned in order to run for President. 26 July 1978 was the deadline for candidates to apply in order to run for office. De Carlos submitted 3,352 documents endorsing his candidacy, while the rest -gynaecologist Campos Gil and florist José Daguerre- didn't get the minimum number required in time. This called off the election and Luis de Carlos was proclaimed President of Real Madrid. On 4 June 1980, the Santiago Bernabéu hosted the Cup final between Real Madrid and Castilla, the Club's second team, created on 21 July 1972. Thanks for the memories: Record-breaking Real rack up 100 points, but Villarreal sink without trace Jose Mourinho's men broke yet another record on Sunday as they reached three figures in the Primera Division with a 4-1 win over Mallorca, but there was a big shock at El Madrigal. Not everyone was celebrating. There was a fond farewell for Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola in La Liga's last weekend of 2011-12, more remarkable records for Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo, a party at the Bernabeu and scenes of jubilation as Granada, Zaragoza and Rayo Vallecano sealed survival against all odds. The Yellow Submarine had seemed unsinkable. Then again, that's just how they described the Titanic - and we all know how that one ended. One hundred years after history's most famous vessel went down, so too did Villarreal. Meanwhile, Madrid hit four more goal ...

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho faces a selection dilemma this weekend. Wednesday night's 4-1 win at rivals Atletico helped them restore their four-point lead at the top over reigning champions Barcelona, with the April 21 meeting between the two looming large and seemingly gaining added significance with every passing day. Madrid face a home meeting with Sporting Gijon before that, though, but know that should Ronaldo pick up a yellow card, he would miss the 'ElClasico' against Barcelona through suspension.
Sporting Gijon is thinking of not setting a wall in front of Ronaldo's free kicks, Gijon coach Javier Clemente explains why: 'I think the goalkeeper has got more chances to stop the ball when he sees the ball coming. We already trained on freekicks without a wall because we've never done it before. Do not miss Real Madrid vs Sporting Gijon tomorrow at 9pm Kenyan Time
