By Christoph Kockeis Former Norway international Jan Aage Fjortoft feels it would be wrong to compare new Real Madrid signing Martin Odegaard to Barcelona star Lionel Messi and has warned that the 16-year-old should be given time to develop. The youngster is regarded as one of the most exciting talents around and Madrid beat off stiff competition from clubs such as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona, Arsenal, Liverpool and Ajax for Odegaard's signature. The attacking midfielder has even been compared to Messi by some due to his style of play, but Fjortoft has moved to downplay expectations following his compatriot's transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu this January. "Comparing Odegaard to Messi is nonsense from the media. Messi is a player who can make the difference and Martin can do the same, but any comparisons should not be taken seriously," Fjortoft told Goal at the Snow Football World Cup in Arosa. "Martin is only 16 years old and he should be allowed to behave like someone of his age. He shou ...
Arsene Wenger has revealed Arsenal missed out on signing Angel Di Maria for NOTHING. Argentinian superstar Di Maria, 26, joins a long list of big names - including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Yaya Toure and Zlatan Ibrahimovic - who nearly joined the Gunners when they were youngsters. Di Maria cost a British record £59.7m when he moved from Real Madrid to Manchester United in the summer, but Wenger admitted they nearly got him when he was just 17. But Wenger says the deal fell through because they could not get Di Maria a work permit - and they now face the same battle as they try to sign Villarreal's Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista. Wenger has called for work permits to be SCRAPPED and borders to be "opened up completely" in football as he claims it is unfair to stop non-European players coming to the Premier League. "We had identified Di Maria when he was 17," he said. "We wanted him to come here. So he goes to Portugal [with Benfica], from Portugal he goes to Spain. Why? Because he could not . ...

The three awards match France’s Zinedine Zidane and Brazil’s Ronaldo for second most since the player of the year award was first presented in 1991. OG.NR Barcelona were 3-1 winners over Spanish league champions Atletico Madrid to move within one point of current league leaders Real Madrid. Atletico sought an early advantage at the Nou Camp but Barcelona weathered the storm, and Lionel Messi evaded the challenge of three defenders and his cross into the box bounced off Luis Suarez and found its way Neymar who fired the ball into the net after 12 minutes. The second goal came after 35 minutes when Messi appeared to use his hand to control a ball and his mazy run into the box, saw him provide the pass to Suarez who scored his second league goal in 10 games. Jesus Gamez earned a penalty for Atletico, after he fell under a challenge in the box from Messi, and Mario Mandzukic put the ball straight down the middle of the goal in the 57th minute to reduce their deficit. Messi settled the game as a contest when he pounced on a ball in the box to score Barcelona's third with three minutes left in normal time.
Real Madrid would not be interested in signing Lionel Messi from Barcelona, insists Iker Casillas   [Daily Mail]
Real Madrid would not want to sign Lionel Messi even if the Barcelona star became available, according to Iker Casillas. The relationship between three-time Fifa Ballon d'Or winner and head coach Luis Enrique is believed to have become untenable, with Chelsea reportedly waiting in the wings to trigger his €250 million release clause should they believe he wants to leave. Madrid skipper Casillas, meanwhile, does not believe a move for the Argentine attacker - who scored in Barca's 5-0 thrashing of Elche on Thursday - would come from his side. "No," the goalkeeper responded bluntly when asked if Madrid should sign Messi. "With the squad we have right now we're doing very well and we are achieving great things." Casillas also defended Barcelona from many of their critics, who have suggested the club are in turmoil following the sacking of sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta, the continuing rumours surrounding Messi and performances on the pitch not living up to expectations. "I do not think that Barca are ...

Lionel Messi is worth €87 million more than Cristiano Ronaldo , according to research within the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) in Switzerland. The 27-year-old attacker has won four Ballons d'Or in his career so far and skippered Argentina to the World Cup final last year, winning the Golden Ball award for being the Best Player in the process. Like Ronaldo with Real Madrid, Messi has a contract with Barcelona until June 2018, although reports have been circulating in recent weeks that he might swap Camp Nou for Chelsea due to discontent in Catalunya. But Chelsea will know Messi will not be cheap: the Football Observatory, a research group within CIES, suggest Messi currently has a valuation of €220m. Ronaldo is next in the list, valued at €133m, while world- record signing Gareth Bale sits in 10th with an estimated net worth of €60m to the Santiago Bernabeu club. Chelsea have three players in the top 10: Eden Hazard is rated at €99m in third spot just ahead of fourth-placed Diego ...
The SEVEN reasons why Lionel Messi could make £200MILLION Chelsea move: 1) There are suggestions the Argentine is unhappy with his pay packet at Barcelona. He signed a new contract in May that earns him £16m a year after tax - but his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo earns £19m a year at Real Madrid. This has apparently caused friction between Messi's camp and Barca. 2) Messi is the all-time top goalscorer in La Liga and the Champions League. But he wants to play in the Premier League and turning 28 in June he could feel the timing is perfect for a move to England. 3) Barca have slapped an astonishing £200m price tag on their star man. But according to sources close to the player, Adidas (Chelsea club sponsor and kit supplier) are ready to help fund the deal in order to steal Messi from their big rivals Nike (who sponsor Barca). 4) Cesc Fabregas left the Nou Camp for Chelsea this summer and is trying to persuade his close friend, his future lies at Stamford Bridge too. 5) Messi wants to live in London. Luis Enrique insisted he had no regrets over his decision to rest Lionel Messi and Neymar during Barcelona's 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad. Having been afforded an extended Christmas break, the pair returned to the club two days later than the rest of the squad. Both men were subsequently left on the bench for the start of Barca's La Liga trip to the Anoeta Stadium, and watched on from the touchline as Jordi Alba put the ball in his own net in the second minute. That unfortunate error from the defender proved to be the decisive moment as, despite enjoying more of the ball for the remainder of the match, Barca failed to find an equaliser. Messi was introduced at half-time, with Neymar brought on shortly before the hour mark, but neither man was able to conjure up a leveller for their team as Sociedad completed a hat-trick of home league wins over Real Madrid, Atletico and Barcelona this season. Defeat ended Barca's 11-match unbeaten run in all competitions, and also meant they missed out on the chance to cli ...

INTO THE CHRISTMAS BREAK... D I D. Y O U. K N O W? * Real Madrid are going into the Christmas break with one-point lead, & a game in hand, at the top of La Liga. * A Spanish record run of 22 successive wins. Two trophies already in the bag (European Super Cup and Club World Cup). * Barcelona have bagged 41 goals in 16 matches - at an average of almost three per game. * Ronaldo has scored only two fewer La Liga goals than Suarez, Lionel Messi and Neymar combined this season. * Real Madrid had a100% record in the Champions League group stage. * Cristiano Ronaldo have scored 25 league goals in 14 matches this season. * The key to Madrid's excellent start is Carlo Ancelotti managing to do something that neither of his Bernabeu predecessors Jose Mourinho or Manuel Pellegrini could do. That's knitting together a dressing room packed with the world's most expensive players and, possibly, the world's most inflated egos. * Bayern Munich have taken 45 points from their 17 matches (a Bundesliga record), and only con ...

Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed Former Real Madrid team-mate Raul's Champions League goalscoring record by scoring his 72nd goal in the prestigious European competition against Ludogorets. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo once again went eye-to-eye this weekend when both scored a hat trick for their respective sides, but who has been in better goal-scoring form since Ronaldo moved to Spain. View: Gallery: Ronaldo & Messi Hat Tricks Dismantle Oppponents The former Manchester United star joined Real Madrid in August 2009 and has since scored 200 La Liga goals in 178 games for Los Blancos. In so doing, he became the quickest player to score 200 league goals in Spain, bettering Telmo Zarra’s record of netting 200 strikes 219 games. Lionel Messi reached that same feat in 235 La Liga games, but started his life in Spain’s top- flight aged 17. Ronaldo, meanwhile, moved to Spain when he was 24 already. Messi has managed to score 202 goals over the last six seasons, compared to Ronaldo’s 200, but the Argentine has played four more games. 6 Football Terms You Must Know If You Love Football (Part 2) 4. Channels. There are 3 channels. Channel 1 is straight through the middle of the pitch towards the penalty box. Bojan Krikic in yesterday's match between Stoke City and Manchester United was fouled by Ander Herrera as he exploited channel 1 right after Stoke conceded the second goal. Channel 2 is the space between the right centre back and an advancing right full back. Channel 3 is on the opposite left side. Sergio Aguero is a master of these channels as Mesut Ozil was with Real Madrid. 5. False 9 The false 9 as the name implies is not a true No.9. He is an attacking midfielder or even a forward who mimics the position. Instead of playing as a target man or an out-and-out striker, he moves away from the opposition penalty box deep into his own half through the middle, thereby pulling along the centre backs with him. This enables the other midfielders to find spaces behind the defense and score goals. Francesco Totti was among the first crop of ...

The former Basel man insists people are jealous of the Real Madrid superstar, who he feels has already proven himself superior to his Barcelona rival by excelling in England Carlos Varela says Lionel Messi is not half as good as Cristiano Ronaldo and claims that the Portuguese would have won more Ballon d'Or awards if he were "ugly". Ronaldo is the reigning titleholder and the current favourite to win this year's prize after inspiring Real Madrid to Champions League glory in May. The 29-year-old has also been widely lauded for his remarkable goalscoring exploits this season but Varela says that Ronaldo still does not get all of the credit he deserves, something he puts down to jealousy. "I do not understand how anyone could criticise him," the former Basel midfielder told AS ahead of Madrid's Champions League clash with the Swiss champions at St. Jakob Park on Wednesday night. "I think his image has a [negative] effect. "People are jealous and envious of him. If he were ugly, they would have treated him b ...
Real Madrid are making a mountain out of a molehill. There is no agenda - Michel Platini was simply expressing a harmless personal opinion which will have no bearing whatsoever on the final vote. Just because he is president of Uefa, why should he keep quiet? We live in a world where freedom of speech is one of the greatest gifts to man and it is surely better anyway that public figures are open and transparent with their views - especially given the mistrust in Uefa and Fifa today. Last year, Sepp Blatter was disrespectful towards Ronaldo when he described him as a "commander" who likes to go to the hairdresser, but Platini's comments don't even mention Ronaldo or Madrid - nor do they discredit the award itself. Platini was merely highlighting the importance of the World Cup and how it should weigh heavily in the outcome of the Ballon d’Or vote. He said the same four years ago - and his words had no impact as Lionel Messi took the prize. Strangely enough, nobody at Madrid felt compelled to complain in ...
Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 71st Champions League goal to give Real Madrid a 1-0 win at Basel as they maintained their 100 per cent record in Group B. The Portugal forward netted from close range after Karim Benzema charged down the left and pulled the ball back for him to equal former Real forward Raul's Champions League tally and move three behind Lionel Messi, who broke the record with a hat-trick for Barcelona on Tuesday. Reigning European champions Real, who made sure of top spot in the group with 15 points, chalked up their club-record-equalling 15th successive win in all competitions, although they had to survive a difficult second half against the Swiss champions, who battled hard throughout the game with 17-year-old forward Breel Embolo proving a real handful. Some fans at St Jakob-Park decided to get their own action shots as Basel hosted Real Madrid Despite their defeat, Basel, who have six points from five games, can still qualify for the last 16 if they draw at Liverpool in their final game. ...
Eugene Sebastian, Arsenal Fan since 2004, Amateu... (more) 4 upvotes by Caleb Diaz, Anirudh Kode, Filipe Costa, (more) I think most likely Cristiano Ronaldo would win it. There are few other strong contenders like Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, Manuel Neuer, Phillip Lahm, Thomas Muller, and Toni Kroos, though I would still think There are few reasons why I think Cristiano Ronaldo would be chosen: 1. More exposure because he scored goals. As a scoring winger (he's not a striker), he would get more publicly known by more people, including the captains of the national team. Aside from the other names, only Lionel Messi scored that much goals. Thomas Muller was often benched in Bayern and didn't get the opportunity. 2. If Manuel Neuer deserved it, it means Phillip Lahm, Toni Kroos, and Thomas Muller also deserved it. Those names are not worse than Manuel Neuer in terms of performance, and they played in the same team (until Toni Kroos moved to Real Madrid), thus in their team, there is no single player that is ...
"SPORTS DRIVE" with Frank (7:30am) : Barcelona and Real Madrid Superstar players, Lionel Messi and Christiano Ronaldo, have been fantastic in the ongoing UEFA Champions League season. Between Ronaldo and Messi, who has impressed you the more?
Messi revels in Champions League milestone 26 November 2014 Lionel Messi reflected on breaking the UEFA Champions League goalscoring record as "a wonderful thing" after his hat-trick against APOEL. The prolific Barcelona forward surpassed Real Madrid legend Raul's tally of 71 goals by scoring his second hat-trick in as many games on Tuesday. Messi took centre stage after Luis Suarez netted his first Barca goal as the Catalan giants coasted to a 4-0 Group F victory in Nicosia. The mercurial Messi became the top scorer in La Liga history with a treble in a 5-1 hammering of Sevilla on Saturday and the Argentina talisman revelled in his latest milestone. "Achieving this record in a competition like this is a wonderful thing. But, beyond that it was a very important game," said Messi, who now has 74 Champions League goals. Luis Enrique's side face French champions Paris Saint-Germain at Camp Nou next month knowing a win would ensure they finish top of the group and Messi is determined to achieve that goal. He ...
Clasico boasted Europe's most expensive lineups, study reveals Real Madrid's meeting with Barcelona at the Bernabeu last month saw the most expensive collection of players on the field of any match in Europe this season, according to a CIES Football Observatory study. The clasico in October saw talent worth 690 million euros take to the field, despite the absence of the injured Gareth Bale, who was reported to have cost Madrid 100 million euros when he joined from Tottenham Hotspur in 2013. Additionally, Barcelona did not pay fees for Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Pedro or Sergi Roberto, who all featured in their side's 3-1 defeat, while Madrid captain Iker Casillas also emerged through his club's academy. REALMadrid, whose side featured big money signings including Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez, contributed 424 million euros to the total, with Luis Suarez and Neymar contributing the bulk of Barca's 267 million euros. Manchester City's 1-1 draw at home to Chelsea in September was ...
Cristiano Ronaldo is a world class footballer; no person in the world can argue about it. Whether he is better than Lionel Messi is a never-ending debate that will go on for years to come, and maybe the final few years of the Real Madrid star’s career will help us discover the answer. Ronaldo is about to turn 30 in February, but his recent stats show that the Portuguese skipper is still in the peak years of his glittering career. Ronaldo has taken the 2014/15 season by storm, with an unbelievable goal-scoring display. Even by his own lofty standards, the stats are truly extraordinary. Ronaldo has scored 15 goals in eight La Liga matches so far, while Messi has managed to score only half of that tally in the same number of appearances. The Barcelona hitman’s record is excellent, averaging almost a goal per game, but it loses its sheen when compared with Ronaldo’s otherworldly start to the campaign. Not everyone would agree, but the former Manchester United man already seems like the leading candidate ...

Alonso: Hard for a German to beat Messi & Ronaldo to Ballon d'Or 19-Nov-2014 The midfielder feels a German player has a chance if the award is decided on team success, but the Madrid and Barca stars have it wrapped up based on individual displays Bayern Munich star Xabi Alonso believes that it would be tough for a German player to beat Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi to the Ballon d'Or. The veteran Spaniard made a surprise summer move to the Allianz Arena from Real Madrid, where he played alongside Ronaldo and enjoyed many battles with Messi's Barcelona. A number of Bayern's contingent of German World Cup winners are nominated for the prestigious award, including the likes of Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer, but Alonso feels the Liga pairing are still ahead of the competition in terms of individual performances. He told Sport Bild: "It's a very general question: is the award about individual, personal performances? "In this case, it would be tough against Messi and Ronaldo. Or is it about t ...

He has defined an era, along with his arch rival Cristiano Ronaldo, and become one of the greatest sporting icons of all time, winning six Liga titles, two Copa del Reys and three Champions Leagues. [THE GREATEST QUOTES ABOUT LIONEL MESSI] As he celebrates a decade in the game, here are the 10 moments which made Messi the superstar he is today. The legend begins: Everything started on October 16, 2004 in a league match against Espanyol, when a player aged just 17 years, three months and 22 days entered the field of play as a substitute for Deco. Messi was wearing the No. 30 shirt with his future No. 10 jersey still being occupied by the great Ronaldinho. That first goal: It took seven and a half months for Messi to score his first goal for Barcelona and it came against Albacete at Camp Nou on May 1, 2005. Ronaldinho scooped a pass over the t ...

Top six La Liga signings of the transfer window Luis Suarez (Liverpool to Barcelona) Suarez’s latest indiscretion at the World Cup earned him a four-month playing ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini, but that didn’t dissuade Barca from spending a reported 95 million euros (£75 million, $127 million) on the Premier League Player of the Year last season. The Uruguayan won’t be able to make his competitive debut until October, but could prove a decisive figure in the title race alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar in a sensational looking front three. James Rodriguez (Monaco to Real Madrid) If Barca opted for the World Cup’s bad boy, Real splashed out on the golden boy from Brazil by sealing the signature of the tournament’s top scorer in Colombian James Rodriguez. Given Real’s abundance of creative talent, Rodriguez may struggle to hold down a place in the playmaking role where he excelled in Brazil. However, coach Carlo Ancelotti has already hailed his willingness to adapt to a role on the left side ...

Liverpool FC transfer gossip: Reds to offer Raheem Sterling new contract amid Real Madrid interest; Alex Song on the radar; Brendan Rodgers confident on Wilfried Bony A round-up of today's transfer rumours Raheem Sterling could be set to quadruple his pay as Liverpool FC attempt to ward off interest in the youngster by offering him a new deal, according to the Daily Mirror. The report that Real Madrid have been keeping tabs on the 19-year-old and Brendan Rodgers is keen to tie him down to a fresh deal as soon as possible. Sterling signed a £30,000-a-week deal just over 18 months ago and that expires in 2017 and the Mirror claim that the England international will be offered wages of £120,000-a-week in order to keep him at Anfield. Rodgers recently praised Sterling's pre-season form and labelled the player "beautiful" - and well as comparing him to Lionel Messi. He said: “This kid is only going to get better. World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro has raised doubts about the way in which Barcelona are going to play this season, when they will have to incorporate the attacking triumvirate of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar into their tactics. The much-lauded strikeforce is one that will certainly offer great entertainment going forward, but Italian legend Cannavaro has suggested that the rest of the team will suffer as a result of their forwards. He told Goal: "This is modern football we are talking about- who is going to cover them in midfield?" "Real Madrid have to be favourites to win La Liga." Cannavaro won the Spanish league twice between 2006 and 2009 with Real, following Italy's fourth World Cup triumph in Germany in 2006. Barca's Suarez has recently joined the club but is banned from all football-related activity four four months for, ironically, biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in their World Cup Group D fixture earlier in the summer.

This almost had me in tears. IF YOU ARE A TRUE CR7 FAN YOU WILL READ IT WITHOUT CONSIDERING THE LENGTH OF IT ...!! Credits : I Was Born To Die As A Madridista An open letter to CR7 from a Manchester United fan : Dear Ronny, I am writing this letter to let you know what I feel about you. I am not attached to any other athlete as much as you. Only my love for Sir Alex Ferguson surpasses that for you, and mind you, by country miles. How have you been lately? It seems life is all rosy for you now. You’re scoring for fun in Spain and you’re destroying teams when you travel around Europe. You’re definitely earning around twice or thrice of what you did at Old Trafford, and you have a beautiful girlfriend in Irina Shayk. After being overshadowed by Lionel Messi in spite of your excellent performances ever since you started living your “dream” at Santiago Bernabéu, you’ve finally won the Ballon d’Or, which makes you the certified Best Player, although for most of us, you always were the one. Real, Barcelona top Forbes rich list Spain may have been embarrassingly dethroned as World Cup holders, but Real Madrid and Barcelona are still champions at making money after they were named as the world's two richest sports franchises. For the second successive year, Forbes business magazine tagged European champions Real Madrid, where Cristiano Ronaldo plays, as the No 1 sports team with a value of $3.44 billion. Barcelona, the home of Lionel Messi, Neymar and now the notorious Luis Suarez, are second in the chart with a current value of $3.2 billion, while English giants Manchester United are ranked at three at $2.81 billion despite their miserable season. The only other football club in the top 10 are German champions Bayern Munich whose current value of $1.85 billion is good enough for seventh spot. The rest of the top 10 is from Major League Baseball and the National Football League. The New York Yankees are No 4, valued at $2.5 billion with the Dallas Cowboys, worth $2.3 billion, holding the fifth ...
Germany’s star midfielder Toni Kroos was statistically the Best Player in the tournament, according to the Castrol Index, the FIFA approved ranking of World Cup players. The Bayern Munich play-maker, expected to complete a move to Real Madrid this summer, achieved a stunning score of 9.79 out of 10 for his performances in Brazil. The criteria for the score includes passes, tackles, ground covered and, of course, goals. The results make for interesting reading. Here are the top ten, with perhaps the most notable omissions being golden ball winner Lionel Messi, Germany’s captain Philipp Lahm and Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez. Toni Kroos (9.79) – the Germany pass master excelled, scoring twice in the 7-1 semi-final victory over Brazil and displaying his creative brilliance throughout the tournament. Arjen Robben (9.74) – Kroos’ Bayern team-mate enjoyed an excellent tournament for Holland, sometimes playing as a centre forward as well as his traditional wide berth and scoring three times. Only three footballers have won Champions Trophy and World Cup in the same year, interestingly all of them are Real Madrid players, Sami Khedira is the third and latest add into this edition. Congratulations Sami and his team Germany for winning the World Cup beating our arch rival Barcelona's key player and superstar Messi's Argentina team. My heartiest condolence goes for one of the Best Player of the world Lionel Messi and specially our angel boy Di Maria.
Match Report: Argentina 1-0 Switzerland Argentina booked their place in the World Cup quarter-final after Angel Di Maria struck in the dying minutes of injury time to secure a 1-0 win over Switzerland. Not for the first time this tournament, Alejandro Sabella's men struggled to make their presence felt in attack for large spells, with the Real Madrid midfielder guilty of conceding possession on a number of occasions. However, Di Maria popped up with just two minutes of extra-time remaining to sweep home after some good work by Lionel Messi. Substitute Blerim Dzemaili headed against the post for Switzerland before time was up, and should have done better with the rebound. The result sets up a last-eight meeting for Argentina with Belgium or the United States in Brasilia, and was ultimately harsh on a Switzerland side who defended resolutely in what will now prove to have been Ottmar Hitzfeld's final game in charge before retiring. Argentina were forced into one change, with Ezequiel Lavezzi coming in for i ...
5 things we learnt from Nigeria vs Argentina * 1- Payback for Messi When Nigeria faced Argentina at the last World Cup in South Africa, it was a personal duel between Lionel Messi and Vincent Enyeama. The Lille goalkeeper repelled the Barcelona forward time and time again, even though Gabriel Heinze eventually secured a 1-0 win for the South Americans. In 2014, there was nothing Enyeama could do about Messi’s brace. The first was an emphatic finish from a loose ball inside the area, while the second was a sublime free-kick before half time. 2- Di Maria vs Enyeama If Messi succeeded in breaking his jinx against Enyeama, Di Maria opened another personal duel with the Eagles vice-captain. It was the turn of the Real Madrid ace to be shut out by Enyeama. 3- Mikel Obi is not the answer The Chelsea midfielder was simply pathetic in this game. Played with no pace, no desire and no skill. Many times, Mikel Obi who was the second Best Player behind Lionel Messi at the World Youth Championship in 2005, exposed hi ...

Barcelona are set to beat rivals Real Madrid to the £52m signing of Luis Suarez, according to Spanish paper El Mundo Deportivo. The deposed La Liga champions plan to partner the Uruguayan striker with Lionel Messi and Neymar, with a deal reportedly close to completion. The paper report that Liverpool inserted a release clause of £68m in Suarez's last contract, but this is reduced to £52m if Barcelona or Real Madrid express an interest.
Barca told to pay €70m for Higuain? Napoli won’t consider selling Gonzalo Higuain for less than €70m amid reports of interest in the striker from Barcelona. AS cite claims from Gazzetta dello Sport that say Barca have bid €55m for the Former Real Madrid forward but Napoli President Aurelio de Laurentiis will only let him go for substantially more. Higuain moved to San Paolo from Santiago Bernabeu last summer but speculation has mounted that Barca have identified the Argentina international as the front man to lead the line under Luis Enrique. Napoli paid €40m and got 24 goals in 46 games in return. Higuain has emerged as Barca’s preferred signing after it became clear Sergio Aguero would remain at Manchester City and the move has the backing of Lionel Messi. The clubs announced today they would play a pre-season friendly on August 6, in Geneva, with Higuain mentioned by de Laurentiis as one of the Napoli players who will take part.

Group E Switzerland, France, Honduras, Ecuador The French have been given a really good draw. But it's about whether they can score enough goals. They've got Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema - he's clearly a lovely, gifted footballer who scores brilliant goals, no doubt he's started well with a brace against Honduras. Les Blues French should go through as group winners. You can't fancy Honduras as the other qualifier, while Ecuador do well when they play at altitude at home, but they won't have that advantage in Brazil. Switzerland is another side hungry for success. My Verdict France will win the group while Switzerland go through as second best. Group F Argentina, Bosnia, Nigeria, Iran This group features one of the favourites - Argentina, who will take some stopping. History tells us that South American teams win the World Cup when it's staged on their continent. Argentina have the greatest player I think we've seen in many a year - Barcelona's Lionel Messi. He'll be massively keen to win a World Cup ...
Argentina v Bosnia (ko 11pm UK time)   You have to go back 24 years to find the last time Argentina progressed past the quarter-final stage but hopes are high they can at least emulate their 1990 performance, when they lost 1-0 to West Germany in the final. The draw has been kind, pitching them against Bosnia, Nigeria and Iran, and they should get their campaign off to a flyer. Their main strength lies in attack and even if Gonzalo Higuain remains sidelined for this match, the frightening skills of Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero are going to give a slightly suspect Bosnia back-line a nightmare time, while that pairing can rely on quality service from Real Madrid's Angel Di Maria. Argentina won last November's friendly meeting 2-0 and Alejandro Sabella's men have now clocked up five consecutive clean sheets, but if they have a weakness it's in defence. Bosnia's best form of defence is attack and the Balkan side, whose front line will be spearheaded by Edin Dzeko (10 goals in qualifying), could mark their ...

Here's just a bit of advice for those who play Career Mode on FIFA, would advise you to read it if you play Career Mode** Ever get when you save up about 80M on a season after the January transfer window and then when it comes to the next season it all vanishes and you only get about 40m and you've just lost 40M that you saved from the previous season. Well as you guys know I recently got Lionel Messi on a free on my Real Madrid career but too persuade him I had to offer him 1M in wages therefore allocating 50M of my transfer Budget into wages and offering it to him. It was then when I was daydreaming in school when I thought "Wait, I don't even need messi" because I've got Zaha, Ronaldo, Griezmann, Di Maria, Bale, Bakkali and Januzaj who are all young and more capable. That's when I thought if I sold Messi in the following season and got the 1M wages back in the process, transformed the wages into Transfer Budget money them I would have even more money then I had the season before. So if you have 60M lef ...

Real Madrid to pay whatever it takes to land Suarez: The Spanish giants will write Liverpool a blank cheque to secure the services of Luis Suarez this summer, according to reports in the Mail on Sunday and Metro citing sources in Spain. Real president Florentino Perez sees Suarez as this summer's galactico signing - and while they'll open up with a £60 million bid to get the ball rolling, they're prepared "to go even higher to get their man," according to the Metro. Liverpool will resist any offer for their leading light, but Suarez is known to be keen on Madrid and would find resisting a switch difficult," the report adds. "Karim Benzema, who is about to enter the final year of his Madrid contract, could be used as a possible make-weight if a cash deal cannot be reached." The Mail's report adds that Barcelona are keen too - though surely they'd only move if rumours of Lionel Messi's desire to leave are true - and suggests that either of the Spanish giants could trigger a rumoured £82m release clause - ...

Manchester United are rumoured to be prepared to delve into the transfer market to sign none other than Lionel Messi this summer. The Argentinean magician has not had the best of seasons with his club out of the Champions League in the quarter final stage and losing the Copa del Rey final to Real Madrid. They now only have the La Liga title to fight for and they are currently sitting in second four points behind leaders Atletico Madrid and many are claiming that Messi’s best form is behind him. With Barcelona’s transfer ban being suspended for the summer, they will be free to buy and sell players. Andres Iniesta has called on the club to keep Messi as he believes he is integral to the club’s future success. "I have no doubts about Messi," Iniesta told El Mundo Deportivo. He continued by saying, "He could not be better anywhere else other than here and Barca will not find another player like him." Even though United don’t yet have a permanent manager, it seems as though the Glazer family who owns t ...
Real Madrid could sign Lionel Messi, claims Hugo Sanchez. Barcelona are in danger of pushing superstar Lionel Messi into the hands of their biggest rivals Real Madrid, warns former La Liga star Hugo Sanchez. There are growing murmurs emerging from Camp Nou that Messi is no longer happy at the Catalan club after being carelessly looked after by the club's staff. Messi has struggled with injury this term and many believe the pressure on him to perform has been too great, leading to his discontent. Real Madrid legend, Sanchez, says that Barcelona are in a very vulnerable position this summer and could see bids coming in for the Argentine from a number of clubs - including Real Madrid. "Messi is not feeling valued highly enough by Barcelona with his contract and they must be careful." "If Barca are careless, I can see Real Madrid signing him." Transfers between the Nou Camp and the Bernabeu are understandably rare. The last player to do so was Javier Saviola, who swapped Catalonia for the Spanish capital in 2 ...

Atletico stay top, three points clear of third-placed Real, as they squeezed out a tense 1-0 win over Villarreal, whilst Barça remain in second after overcoming Real Betis 3-1 thanks to two goals from Lionel Messi. Real were leading 1-0 thanks to Asier Illarramendi's opener when Bale pounced on an error from Sociedad keeper Claudio Bravo to register his 18th goal of the season with a sweet left-footed striker 25 minutes from time before Pepe and Alvaro Morata rounded off the scoring. Without FIFA Ballon d'Or holder Ronaldo due to a knee problem, Madrid took their time to get going in San Sebastian and could have been behind when Antoine Griezmann's header flashed just over the bar midway through the first-half. As is often the case when the Spanish giants meet, the game was littered with controversy as Sergio Ramos was sent off and the three penalties awarded were all disputed. But Messi's precision from two of the spot-kicks won the game, meaning he outshone Cristiano Ronaldo, as Barcelona closed to within a point of title rivals Real and Atletico Madrid. Here's how Spanish football writer Andy West rated the players: Real Madrid Diego Lopez (goalkeeper) - 6 Despite conceding four goals, he was in the paradoxical situation of having relatively little to do and certainly stood no chance with any of Barcelona's strikes. I was sure Ronaldo will come out blaming the ref... So predictable... The only spot kick which should not have been given was probably the one which was awarded to Real Madrid as the contact was clearly outside the box. Ramos's red card happens to be his 19th in his RM career, what's there to be shocked about his dismissal. RM played well in patches but Barcelona deserved to triumph as they seem to have more will than RM. Ronaldo blaming ref does not surprise me at all coz he is just like dat, bunch of ego ... Real Madrid have no defence as they surrender title supremacy Barcelona and Atletico are back in the race after a sensational Clasico which saw the Catalans claim victory in a seven-goal thriller at the Santiago Bernabeu Mar 23, 2014 11:09:00 PM COMMENT By Ben Hayward | Spanish Football Writer Everything had appeared in Real Madrid's favour. With Barcelona faltering in recent weeks and Atletico also in their slipstream, Carlo Ancelotti's side approached the Clasico with confidence and the comfortable cushion of a four-point advantage over their fierce foes. All they had to do was defend it. But they couldn't. Defending, in fact, was far from the strong point of either side on Sunday. Andres Iniesta was allowed time and space to escape alone on the left and blast Barca into an early lead. Then, Karim Benzema twice took advantage of poor marking from the Catalans to turn it around before Lionel Messi negotiated his way through a crowd of Madrid defenders to make it 2-2 at half-time. The second half was a ta ...
Real Madrid -vs- Barcelona :: El Classico :: My match analysis From the very first minute FCB made the people understood that they are gonna win the match by their mentality of play style. They will be throwing every weapon they have to their opponent and will be not going home disappointed. Lionel Messi was outstanding by the way he created chances and the way he glide passed the central defensive and defensive mid-fielders... Andres Iniesta was often left unmarked by Carvajal which was a serious mistake committed by the RM leftback as Iniesta is capable of devastating outcomes both inside and outside the penalty box. This fault led to the first goal by Iniesta was Carvajal was busy marking the progress of Messi even though he was already marked by Pepe and Ramos. Benzema missed few glorious opportunities. Much more is expected of a player of his standards.. He should have scored at least 2 more goals. According to me, BBC was a flop show. Bale had no control over his speed and body and ball control. a . ...

Lionel Messi says Barcelona were back to their best on Wednesday night as they beat Manchester City 2-1 to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals. Messi was in fine form throughout the game and opened the scoring in the first-half as the Catalan giants defeated Manuel Pellegrini's side in Camp Nou, winning 4-1 on aggregate. Despite reaching the last-eight of club football's most prestigious competition, the Blaugrana have come under a lot of criticism as they have slipped four points behind league leaders Real Madrid in La Liga. Speaking after the game, Messi said Barca deserved the victory against the Premier League club and feels his side's performance was of the level people have come to expect of them in recent years. "We defeated a very difficult rival," he told Canal+. Barça suffer shock defeat at Valladolid (AFP) Saturday 8 March 2014 Share Barcelona slumped to their third defeat in seven league games as they lost away to relegation-threatened Valladolid 1-0. Italian Fausto Rossi scored the only goal of the game as he slammed home from close range after 17 minutes. Valladolid goalkeeper Diego Marino was forced into four saves by Lionel Messi, but it was Neymar who had the best chance to level when he ballooned over just before the hour mark. However, the Catalans couldn't find a way through and could fall four points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid should Los Blancos beat Levante at home on Sunday. Victory for Valladolid also has significant consequences at the other end of the table as La Pucela move out of the relegation zone with just their fifth league win of the campaign. Despite the majority of his squad having been away on international duty in midweek, Barça boss Gerardo Martino named almost his strongest starting line-up with only Jordi Alba and Andres In ...

Gerardo Martino says he is to blame for Barcelona's 3-1 defeat at Real Sociedad on Saturday as he did not prepare his team sufficiently. Lionel Messi's strike and leap to third in La Liga's all-time top scorers charts proved scant consolation as the Blaugrana were outdone by Antoine Griezmann and David Zurutuza, as well as an own goal by Alex Song. And Martino, who was sent to the stands at half-time for calling La Real's assistant coach an *** in Argentine, admitted his men were totally inferior to their hosts. "I didn't prepare us for the game well enough, Real were the better team. Now we have to get up, we have a week to prepare the next game," the 51-year-old told reporters. "It was probably a mistake not to make changes when the score was at 1-1. Introducing Xavi wouldn't have made any sense, as [Cesc] Fabregas and Alexis [Sanchez] were already present. "I don't have anything to say about the decision to send me off. The referee made that decision and that's that." Defeat sees Real Madrid go three . ...

Cristiano Ronaldo Is Not The Best; I Am’ Says France’s Franck Ribery Cristiano Ronaldo, despite scoring a staggering total of 69 goals in only 59 games in 2013, did not deserve the Ballon D’or award as the year’s Best Player. At least, that’s what one of his competitors, Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery now says. Cristiano Ronaldo won the coveted trophy for the first time last Monday, at an awards ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland, home base of the world football (aka soccer) governing body, FIFA. The final three nominees were Ronaldo, Ribery and Barcelona’s brilliant Lionel Messi, who had a grip on the trophy for the previous four years. Messi hasn’t said anything, but Ribery has not exactly extended his congratulations to Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese superstar who leads Spain’s Real Madrid side. In fact, he feels that Europe’s Best Player last year was not Cristiano Ronaldo. It was Franck Ribery. “I won everything, with the team and individually. Ronaldo won nothing,” Ribery ...

Valencia stun Barcelona at Camp Nou !!! Valencia snatched a shock 3-2 win at 10-man Barcelona, dealing a huge title blow to Tata Martino’s side. Barcelona seemed to be cruising after Alexis Sanchez’s sublime 7th-minute chip, dominating possession until Dani Parejo exploited terrible defending to equalise just before half-time. Pablo Piatti added a second early in the second half as Valencia again hit Barca on the counter, but the hosts were given a lifeline whenRicardo Costa was incorrectly penalised for handball in the box. The ball clearly struck the Valencia captain’s shoulder, and with his arm by his side it was a dreadful decision. Lionel Messi equalised from the spot, his first Liga goal since September. But Valencia would not be denied as Paco Alcacer converted the excellent Sofiane Feghouli’s low cross, with Jordi Alba’s dismissal for a second yellow card forcing Barca to play the final 13 minutes with 10 men.
