SPAIN – La Liga La Liga has had a reputation for quite a while as a two team league, Barcelona and Real Madrid with odd appearances by a third team every now and then. Last season, that odd team was Atletico Madrid and they proved to be the best in the league, winning their first title since 95/96. This has made the Madrid derby one of the biggest in Europe these days. But it pales into comparison with the big one – El Clasico. El Clasico is probably the biggest non-derby match in the world. Barcelona v Real Madrid is a match that the whole world waits for every season. Getting a ticket for this match is difficult and/or costly. I remember trying to get a ticket for the Clasico in Barcelona last season, and most people were asking in the region of 400 Euros for their ticket. And they were bad seats. Trying for a good seat could set you back 1,000 Euros. But The Classic rarely fails to live up to the hype, especially in recent years. Amazing skill, controversy galore, fights and a guarantee of a moment ...

I’ve been following Real Madrid for almost 10 years now and have been a huge fan for about 7 or 8 of those years. For all those years, though, I only remember two instance when I was this nervous: the last match of the 2006-2007 season where we clinched the title. But that was one match, and I was still in the early days of my fandom. For those unfamiliar with the game, El Clasico (The Classic) is a much anticipated match of La Liga (Spanish Premier League) that takes place between 2 football giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Call it good luck or the law of attraction, few random events do occur and the universe often conspires to give you what you want. fortunate to have witnessed and watched. To witnessed goals by Messi and Ronaldo!? Whether on Tv or Bernabeu Stadium!? sounds like a dream to me :)

El Clasico stats: Lionel Messi is the all time leading goal scorer with 21 goals in El Clasicos. Real Madrid's biggest league win against Barcelona is 8-2 in Feb 1935. Barcelona's biggest league victory vs Real Madrid is 7-2 in Sep 1950. The game pits the two Best Players in the world against each other with Messi leading Barcelona and Cristiano Ronaldo the key man for Real. Messi could make yet more history on Saturday as he sits just one goal adrift of Telmo Zarra's record of 251 goals in the Spanish top flight and achieving the record against bitter rivals Real would make it all the more special. Ronaldo, who has scored 15 goals in seven La Liga games this season, has played down talk that the match will be decided between himself and Messi. The World Cup's top scorer James Rodrigiuez will get his first taste of El Clasico after his big money to Real from Monaco in the summer. Uefa Champions League - LIVERPOOL 0 : 3 REAL MADRID October 23, 2014 02:45 Anfield, Liverpool Referee: N. Rizzoli Attendance: 43521 LIVE COMMENTARY Next up for Liverpool is another home game as they host Hull in the Premier League, while Real have the small matter of taking on Barcelona in El Clasico. That's all for tonight, though, so thanks for joining us and goodbye! That's a third win out of three for Real, while Liverpool have now lost their last two in the Champions League. Ronaldo, meanwhile, moves to within one goal of Raul's all-time goalscoring record in the competition. FULL TIME at Anfield and Real Madrid have cruised to a 3-0 win over Liverpool thanks to a first-half blitz with a superb goal from Ronaldo and two more from Karim Benzema. After a bright opening 20 minutes from the hosts, Ancelotti's men never looked back. 90' + 1' Into the first of two added minutes and Gerrard fires it out wide to Johnson, who tries to find Sterling beyond the defence, but it's a poor pass which goes s ...

If Lionel Messi becomes La Liga all time top scorer during El Clasico, game could be paused to celebrate!Lionel Messi has scored a whopping 249 La Liga goals. The record for most La Liga goals is currently held by Telmo Zarra, who notched 251 goals, predominantly for Athletic Bilbao, in the Spanish top flight. As it stands, it is simply a question of when Lionel Messi will break the La Liga all-time goal scoring record with Barcelona hosting Eibar at the Nou Camp next, followed by El Clasico at the Bernabeu in the following game. There is a very real chance that Messi will either arrive to the Real Madrid game as all-time La Liga top goal scorer, or even break the record against Los Blancos. The Spanish Football Association president discussed yesterday what should happen when Messi breaks the record. Javier Tebas told journalists, “It will be an important historic moment. Messi will deserve some form of tribute and if he surpasses the record of Zarra, we should pause to reflect on what will be such a h ...

SPORTS UPDATE WITH EMMAH ATAI: Spain is set to be divided once again tonight at 22:30 as Barcelona take on Real Madrid in the final of the Copa Del Rey at the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia. With Atletico Madrid seemingly running away with the league title, this El Clasico is expected to be like no other. The stakes will be high as it is possibly both teams' best chance of winning a trophy this season. For Barcelona, after being knocked out of the Champions League and also struggling with their league form, this cup seems to be their only hope to finish the season with some silverware. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he is hoping for an Everton slip-up in the race for a Champions League spot, but Toffees boss Roberto Martinez believes there is no pressure on his side. Arsenal's win over West Ham on Tuesday put them a point above Everton, who host Crystal Palace tonight at 21:45. Manchester United are edging closer to a £30 million deal for Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, which would see them fend off . ...

Atletico Madrid currently sit on top of the current La Liga standings with a three-point lead over second-place Real Madrid. Barcelona remain four points off the lead. With only five matches left for each side, it will be difficult to come from behind. Additionally, Barca were eliminated from Champions League, taking out one more chance to call it a successful season. As a result, they will be fighting hard in the Copa Del Rey against their biggest rivals in the latest version of El Clasico. Here is a look at what the battle means for both sides.

Have there ever been two more expensive non-entities on the same pitch? Real Madrid'sGareth Baleand Barcelona'Neymar bothwent completely unnoticed in Sunday's El Clasico, one of those crucial events where the big players must step up. Both of them hid on the pitch, just as the club's directors have attempted to hide the true magnitude of their transfer fees, which are estimated to be around £164m. Bale joined Real Madrid from Tottenham in an £91m transfer, while Neymar's real value has everyone obsessed. The Brazilian star joined Barcelona from Santos last summer, with the Catalan club initially saying they paid £48m for his services. However, after being investigated by a court for possible misappropriation of funds following complaints from a Barcelona member, they admitted that the real price of the deal was £73m. Clearly, they are both excellent players. No-one at Real Madrid or Barcelona doubts that. However, their performances are not living up to the prices paid for them. On Sundays'El Clasico, ...

All the Real Madrid and Christiano Ronaldo fans, don't miss the chance, let's do lungi dance and Let's have a look how El clasico players are rated and where your Ronaldo stands. Real Madrid v Barcelona: El Clasico Player Ratings By Andy West Spanish football writer El Clasico served up a football feast with Lionel Messi scoring a hat-trick in Barcelona's thrilling 4-3 win over Real Madrid. As is often the case when the Spanish giants meet, the game was littered with controversy as Sergio Ramos was sent off and the three penalties awarded were all disputed. But Messi's precision from two of the spot-kicks won the game, meaning he outshone Cristiano Ronaldo, as Barcelona closed to within a point of title rivals Real and Atletico Madrid. Here's how Spanish football writer Andy West rated the players: Real Madrid Diego Lopez (goalkeeper) - 6 Despite conceding four goals, he was in the paradoxical situation of having relatively little to do and certainly stood no chance with any of Barcelona's strikes. Even s ...
Real Madrid's team bus being welcomed at the Bernabeu ahead of El Clasico!
Cristiano Ronaldo on El CLasico: - "This referee is not ready for these kind of games." "We played against 12. It's always the same. They don't allow us. Maybe they wanted Barça back in the Liga." "I'm not looking for excuses, but this ref is not at the required level for a game like this." "If Barcelona lost today, they would have been out of the race. After five years here I finally understand how things work." "You (media) have been here for many years more than me. I have never seen Real Madrid been favored by the referees..." "I'm sure that no matter all this, we will win the Liga" "We are sad because we deserved more, but we're fine." "Real Madrid is the biggest club in the world." "They don't want us to win La Liga."
I was wrong about Cristiano Ronaldo. I believed that Ronaldo is a brilliant player, who does his fair share of play acting, but that's fine because lots of players do that. I thought CR7 had a passion for football, an acceptable mentality, and a vision for fair play. I had respect for him and I called him the second best after Messi and one of the best ever. He proved me wrong. He proved in his last press talk that he is a hypocrite loser who is too butthurt to accept defeat and talks about Barca's penalties whereas his own penalty was the worst decision of the three. Last year, referee Undanio Mallenco was responsible for officiating an El Clasico at the Camp Nou in the second leg of a Copa Del Rey tie. In that match, February 26, 2013, which I call the darkest day in football, Real Madrid seemed to have the referee to them. This same guy, Mallenco. He ignored clear fouls on Pedro, Messi, Fabregas, and also the referee himself came in front of Pedro and blocked him off from a pure goalscoring opportunity ...
Barcelona moved to within a point of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga as they twice came from behind thanks to a Lionel Messi hat-trick to edge a thrilling El Clasico 4-3 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Lionel Messi strikes a magnificent goal yesterday and two goals well taken from spot kicks. His hat-trick has seen him broke Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano record 18 goals in el clasico games. Messi now has 21 goals in el clasico games. The all time La Liga scorer has broken Madrid heart yesterday. Congratulation to Fc Barcelona.
Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo has come out and made some controversial comments about the referee of Sunday night’s El Clasico match against Barcelona. It was a game that saw a 7 goal thriller with three pnealies and a red, ending 4-3 in Barcelona’s favour.
A chance to predict the score of tonight's hotly-anticipated El Clasico match-up between league leaders Real Madrid and reigning champions, Fc Barcelona
Real Madrid take on Barcelona in the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu tonight in an El Clasico clash that could go some way to deciding the destination of the La Liga title. Already four points ahead of the Blaugrana, a win for the hosts will open up a seven-point gap and effectively end Barca's hopes of keeping the trophy in Catalonia for another season. However, with only two defeats in their last 10 trips to the Spanish capital, Barca boast one of the best records of any visiting side. Tata Martino also remains unbeaten in the big fixtures this season, and if he can mastermind another victory, Barcelona will be right back in the title race.

The two biggest clubs in Spanish football go head-to-head in the Spanish capital with Barcelona looking for a win that would keep their hopes of retaining La Liga alive. Time for another Who should start in goal for Real Madrid in El Clasico on Sunday versus Barcelona? Diego Lopez or Iker Casillas?
Barcelona have rubbished reports that coach Gerardo Martino could quit the club to take the Argentina national job. Martino has come under pressure in recent weeks, with Barca's La Liga title defence stuttering badly after three defeats in quick succession. Losses to Valencia, Real Sociedad and Real Valladolid in their last seven games have left the champions four points off Real Madrid, though the sides will contest El Clasico on Sunday, with Barca desperate for points. With the added weight of the Camp Nou job reportedly getting to the Argentinian, talk of his departure has mounted, but Barca's marketing vice-president Manuel Arroyo was quick to downplay such rumours at a press conference on Monday. He said: "We found out a few minutes ago that this news was emanating from somewhere. "We don't support it, Tata (Martino) is contracted to the club and in this week that is so important to us he is dedicated to Barca. "We asked him and he has flat out denied it. He has not spoken to anyone, including his st ...

Lionel Messi's hat-trick helped Barcelona sweep aside Osasuna to close the gap on Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the Spanish title race. Argentina star Messi glanced in at the near post, before Alexis Sanchez tucked in Jordi Alba's low centre. Andres Iniesta's stinging 25-yarder put Barca in complete command at the break. Two more Messi goals, along with late strikes from Cristian Tello and Pedro, saw Barca warm up for next Sunday's El Clasico against Real with an easy win.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas says the reason behind his famous phone call to Barcelona midfielder Xavi was because he thought the two clubs were at breaking point, which could have adversely affected the fortunes of Spain. Following a number of ill-tempered El Clasico matches, the defining moment for Casillas was after the Supercopa touchline fracas in 2011 that saw former Madrid coach Jose Mourinho poke the eye of Barca predecessor Tito Vilanova. The goalkeeper and Xavi have been friends since they were teenagers and the shot-stopper felt a call to his international team-mate was needed to avoid further divide and conflict in the Spanish squad - the bulk of which is made up of Barca and Madrid players. “I called Xavi because it was my duty to do so, as the captain, it’s my responsibility,” Casillas told El Pais. “I knew what I had to do because the group was becoming divided, because I represent my country and I have to defend an idea. “We chatted about how we could re-direct what was g ...

Barcelona can build on their win over Real Madrid in the El Clasico by moving nine points clear of Los Blancos when they travel to Celta Vigo.
Real Madrid should have given £86m to Liverpool, not Tottenham If Real Madrid were going to spend huge, it should have been on Liverpool's Luis Suarez and not Tottenham's Gareth Bale. Forgive the pun, but the fact Real Madrid were lacking 'bite' up front against Barcelona in El Clasico was plain to see. They even played new signing Gareth Balein the central striker's role, and the world record Welshman was ineffective. It makes you really wonder about the decision to spend a huge £86 million on signing Bale, only to play him out of position in a game at such a high level. Meanwhile on Merseyside, the irrepressible Luis Suarez scored a sensational hat-trick to down West Brom, making it six goals in four games upon his return from suspension. Liverpool had to fend off interest from Arsenal for his signature in the summer, while links to Real Madrid proved to be little more than just a rumour. Even just on this early form, it is hard to believe that Real Madrid made the best investment decision with their ...
Goals from South American duo Neymar and Alexis Sanchez gave Barcelona a 2-1 win in El Clasico over Real Madrid. Barcelona took the lead just 19 minutes in when Neymar, on his El Clasico debut, found the corner of the net after being played in by Andres Iniesta. Real pushed hard for an equaliser with Victor Valdes producing fine saves from Sami Khedira and Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo also had a very good penalty shout waved away before Karim Benzema rattled the crossbar with a stinging drive. But the win was sealed by Barcelona substitute Sanchez when he beautifully chipped home with 12 minutes remaining. Real pulled one back in added time when Jese latched onto Ronaldo's ball to fire under Valdes, but it was too little too late for the visitors. The win means Barcelona maintain their unbeaten start to the season and moves them some six points clear of Real. Bale Gareth Bale made his second start for Real Madrid but was unable to influence the game and had a frustrating evening, only managing two long-rang ...

An early blow was Madrid taking the lead through Sami Khedira, and it wasn’t until with 20 minutes remaining that Barca finally found the breakthrough. New faces add fresh twist to 'Clasico' With the world's biggest stars and two richest clubs on show, it is no surprise that when Barcelona and Real Madrid meet the world stops to take notice. In recent years though the fixture has become less of a treat with 17 meetings between the two in the past three seasons alone. However, on the brink of their first clash this season on Saturday there is an excitement and freshness brought by the addition of new cast members to the drama that El Clasico almost never fails to deliver. The protagonists remain the same. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated this fixture as they have practically all others since the Portuguese joined the four-time World Player of the Year in Spain four years ago. Should Messi find the net at the Camp Nou on Saturday he would surpass Madrid legend and honourary president Alfredo Di Stefano as the all-time leading scorer in meetings between the two. Ronaldo, meanwhile, is soon catching up with Messi having scored seven times in ...
The Clasico in Spain always throws up talking points and controversies in abundance, as 2 of the country's biggest and most successful teams go head to head to prove their supremacy over 1 another. In the build up to this weekend's El Clasico, here are 5 greatest moments that came in matches between the 2 sides in recent seasons. 5] Barcelona give Real Madrid the guard of honour Barcelona and Real Madrid were to face off against each other on 7th May, 2008, but the usual sting and anticipation that surrounds an El Clasico game was hardly present that day. Real Madrid had already won the league before the game kicked off, and as they were stepping onto the pitch, the Barcelona team formed a guard of honour to salute them and their achievements that season. To further compound their misery, Real Madrid beat them 4-1, depriving the Catalans of an automatic Champions League qualification berth. Xavi called the guard of honour, or the pasillo, as it is called in Spain, the most humiliating experience of his li ...

Pragmatism and patience are the two virtues Manchester United must display in abundance tonight if they are to navigate their way past the mighty Real Madrid. Curbing their natural attacking instincts is unnatural for United, whose history and tradition has been built on pushing forward at every opportunity, playing with a verve and swagger and burying opponents under an avalanche of goals. But just as Barcelona have found to their cost twice in the space of a week, with two defeats in an El Clasico double-header, going gung *** against Jose Mourinho's men inevitably ends in disaster. So it will take a repeat of United's epic Champions League semi-final win over Barcelona in 2008 – in which they shut the Catalans out over two legs – for Ferguson's side to overhaul Mourinho's men. With Phil Jones ruled out with the ankle ligament damage he suffered in the FA Cup win over Reading a fortnight ago, Ferguson faces a dilemma in terms of his central midfield personnel. Jones performed the 'spoiler' role to g ...

Can Cristiano, also known as CR7, emulate the iconic Brazilian's feat? Cristiano Ronaldo’s form in 2013 has gone up a new level. Fc Barcelona vs Real Madrid: A Brief History Of El Clasico The world’s greatest football rivalry gets underway for the first time this season on Monday as the two Spanish giants contest El Clasico once again. Read on for a brief overview of the rivalry between Real Madrid and Fc Barcelona. With football, as with any sport, there is no more powerful reflection of greatness than to compete against a powerful arch-rival, a nemesis whose very existence fuels passion and against whom one’s own greatness is either confirmed or found wanting. Seabiscuit, for example, had War Admiral. Muhammad Ali had Joe Frazier. Lance Armstrong had Jan Ullrich. Such a nemesis serves to enhance, perhaps even define, a competitor’s greatness, and no competition can be considered truly successful unless the nemesis has been vanquished. And yet, as so often occurs in titanic sporting tussles, greatness may be confirmed for loser and winner alike. Few rivalries in sport can compare with the spectacle, the passion, and the shee ...

Real Madrid's dismal season went from bad to worse when Cristiano Ronaldo scored an own-goal to hand relegation- threatened Granada a shock 1-0 win. Real coach Jose Mourinho had already given up winning the league before Christmas and this latest blow means that Barcelona can increase their lead over them to 18 points if they win at Valencia on Sunday. There were doubts over whether or not Ronaldo would play on Saturday as he is struggling with an ankle injury and his mood didn't improve when he headed a Granada corner into his own goal after 22 minutes. Real had scored nine goals in their last two league games but they lacked the necessary drive perhaps as a result of a draining El Clasico in midweek where they scraped a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their King's Cup tie with Barcelona. "It was not a good game and we lost and I am responsible," said Mourinho. "I didn't like the first half from the team, it was terrible. We improved after the break and we dominated. We had a chance to score but if we had t ...
