Raven Klaasen: the Australian Open was amazing but I'm focused on the Davis Cup.
Raven moves up doubles rankings 27 January By SAPA Johannesburg – South Africa's Raven Klaasen jumped 15 places in world doubles tennis rankings while singles player Kevin Anderson dropped one spot on Monday when the ATP rankings were released. Despite reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open in the men's singles, Anderson continued his slide out of the top 20, slipping from 21 to 22 this week. The big-serving Anderson had been struggling on the ATP tour, but signalled a comeback when he twice came from two sets down to win through to the fourth round in Melbourne. It was his nemesis Tomas Berdych who powered his way to a 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Anderson to end the South African's run. Berdych has beaten him in all 10 encounters between the pair. Klaasen flew the South African flag at Melbourne Park, reaching the final of the men's doubles at the Australian Open with American partner Eric Butorac. Along the way, the pair dispatched the top-seeded Bryan brothers and eighth seeds Daniel Nestor ...

South African Davis Cup captain John-Laffnie de Jager on Friday said he was confronted with a poser in finalising his team for next week's Euro-Africa Group Two tie against Monaco in Pretoria. The South African captain submitted the names of Rik de Voest, Nikala Scholtz, Raven Klaasen and Izak van der Merwe to the ITF as the designated four players who will represent South Africa at the Irene Country Club from January 31 to February 2. "This was only done in accordance with the ITF rule that the four names had to be submitted to the international body 10 days before a Davis Cup event," De Jager said. "The rules also stipulate one change can be made to this original choice when the draw is made 24 hours before the start of the tie on Friday and that is when I will actually make my final decision." De Jager earlier in the week named Ruan Roelofse in the five-man squad from where the final team would emerge. De Voest is certain to be nominated as the No 1 singles player, with in-form Australian Open finalist ...

Not a bad sporting weekend, actually quite good after the Bafana debacle last Sunday. The Blitzbokke won the Las Vegas 7's again at 01h00 this morning, to overtake New Zealand on the log as leaders! Nice one boys!

I am a proud South African! I am a proud member of the community which was classified coloured under apartheid! Although I don't agree with racial classification I know what and who I am. Today is a huge day in the life of a young international sport star born out of this community! RAVEN KLAASEN is already a big name in tennis! Later today he will play in the Australian Tennis Open men's doubles final. Thousands of South Africans here and abroad will be glued to their television sets and shout for him and his partner. Even if they don't win the trophy they are WINNERS already! May they be triumphant! Congratulations and best wishes for RAVEN's parents and family! We are very very proud of him! He plays like a champion! He speaks like a champion! He looks like a champion! HE IS OUR CHAMPION!!!

As the Australian Open finals match slipped away early this morning, this is what the announcer said of TLC and Gustavus great Eric Butorac: " Eric Butorac, still with that ever present smile on his face." Sometimes, all you can do is stand and applaud your opponents. Eric and and partner Raven Klaasen did just that at the end. There is no other way to put it. Their opponents played spectacular tennis and won the Australian Open 6-3, 6-3. But rather than lament missed opportunities, Eric and Raven gave credit to their opponents. And the last thing Eric said to the cameras, with his big smile, was "I want to say hi to my wife and my six week old son. I'll see you tomorrow!" Now that's magic… P.S. We are in the middle of a TLC Winter retreat with kids and chaperones from InnerCity Tennis, St. Paul Urban Tennis, Fred Wells Tennis and Education Center, USTA, Aitkin (MN), and Eau Claire (WI) "Y". We are having fun and talking about becoming aware of our prejudices and building bridges to others. The ...

Aussie Open I used to pull all-nighters to watch the tournament down under. Now it is a TV-nap cycle. FOX SPORTS. Prior to my first nap I watched the one and only Mike Kosta on his afternoon national show. He is on a panel of six with the most famous star being Regis Philbin. Kosta spent a considerable amount of time training with me following his days playing under Craig Tiley at the University of Illinois. It seemed like two years to me but if you ask Kosta, a professional comedian, he might tell you it seemed like twenty years. On yesterday's show, he plugged Australian Open doubles finalist Raven Klaasen. The two of them won a Futures together. On air, the tall and good-looking Kosta, who may make it to the movies, shared how they split eleven hundred dollars and how this weekend Raven has the chance to split six hundred thousand. I started working with Raven when he was seventeen. After six months of no competition because he had to have his entire game revamped, I was looking for a doubles partner f ...

Johannesburg, South Africa – The South African Davis Cup team will have a slightly new look when they face Canada in their upcoming World Group Playoff tie from September 14 to 16. Tennis South Africa (TSA) have announced that 21-year-old Nikala Scholtz will be joining Izak van der Merwe (ranked 152), Rik de Voest (177), and Raven Klaasen (ranked 551) at the Uniprix Stadium in Montreal for the tie. The team is captain by John-Laffnie de Jager. South Africa’s highest ranked player, Kevin Anderson, is not available to play in this tie. “Unfortunately, after much deliberation, I cannot commit to playing in the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Canada in September,” said Anderson. “This is not a decision I have taken lightly as I always consider it an honour to represent my country. However, the tie comes at the end of a long hard court season which has traditionally taken its toll on my body, especially my knee. “In the summer of 2011, my knee injury reached a climax and I compromised it by playing ...
