While India has a responsibility to protect citizens from terror attacks, the counterterrorism law has long been abused to detain suspects for excessive periods, file charges on fabricated evidence, and ban organizations without due process of law. These amendments will make the law an even more dangerous tool in the hands of officials who seek to oppress peaceful critics and minority communities. Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director (New York) – The Indian parliament should reject proposed amendments to India’s counterterrorism act that could lead to further misuse of the draconian law, Human Rights Watch said today. Parliament should call on the government to withdraw the amendments to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967 (UAPA), which is scheduled for a vote in India’s Upper House, the Rajya Sabha, on December 17, 2012. Citing McKinsey as a source, the article stated that Rajiv Gandhi held 2.5 billion Swiss francs in secret Indian accounts in Switzerland. Several leaders of opposition parties in India have raised the issue citing the Schweizer Illustrierte article. In December 1991, Amal Datta raised the issue in the Indian Parliament – the then speaker of the Lok Sabha, Shivraj Patil, expunged Rajiv Gandhi's name from the proceedings. In December 2011, Subramanian Swamy wrote a letter to the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation which cited the article, asking him to take action on black money accounts of the Nehru-Gandhi family. On 29 December 2011, Ram Jethmalani made an indirect reference to the issue in the Rajya Sabha, calling it a shame that one of India's former Prime Ministers was ...

Master Blaster - Sachin Tendulkar makes his maiden appearance in Rajya Sabha (Upper House of the Indian Parliament)
INDIA'S PARLIAMENT : As the Indian Parliament completes 60 years, it is time not for noisy celebration but for serious introspection. That India remained a parliamentary democracy while some of its South Asian neighbours went through military coups or violent upheavals can only be a small consolation to its people. Stability is of no great value in itself. After 60 years, the question to ask is whether the debates in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha have adequately reflected the will of the people, whether the law-making powers of Parliament have contributed to the creation of a freer, fairer and more just society. Evidently, the score-sheet shows negative results on these counts. Also, after 60 years and 15 national general elections, India's Parliament is nowhere close to being truly representative. Thus, power is still concentrated in the hands of a few, with the role of the public limited to voting in governments every five years or so. India's people need to be an active part of the process (Anna Ha ...

MUST READ SPEECH OF Sitaram Yechury, LEADER CPI(M) on 60th Anniversary of the Indian Parliament !! I rise to join all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament and the rest of the country on this 60th birthday of independent India’s Parliament. As the country celebrates this sashtipurti, ancient belief suggests that a new life will begin. It, however, does not say a `better life’. It is incumbent upon the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha today to make the Parliament and our democratic system a better one for the future. This requires consideration of at least four aspects. Before we discuss these issues, it is necessary to recollect what the then Prime Minister of Britain, Sir Anthony Eden, said: “Of all the experiments in government, which have been attempted since the beginning of time, I believe that the Indian venture into parliamentary government is the most exciting. The Indian venture is not a pale imitation of our practice at home, but a magnified and multiplied reproduction on a scale we have never drea ...

Believe it or not A hilarious episode of the Indian Parliament The first day of Parliament’s budget session was disrupted and adjourned indefinitely after a Rajya Sabha MP, Mr. Valethom Ipi, who represents Jharkand in the Council of States, lost bowel control and began to flatulate (fart) incessantly. Mr. Ipi’s bout of indigestion began innocuously enough in the form of mild rumblings during the President’s address to the joint session of Parliament, inducing an irate Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mr. Pawan Bansal to caustically remind Parliamentarians to show respect to the President by maintaining decorum. Mr. Bansal’s admonishment ensued a few minutes of silence as Mr. Ipi managed to keep things tight. Alas, it was only the lull before the storm that would unleash bedlam in the highest lawmaking body of the country and mark a turning point in the annals of parliamentary proceedings. As President Patil was speaking in an earnest, measured tone about her Government’s determination to eradica ...
As per the Article 80(3), President of India can nominate 12 people to Upper House of Indian Parliament aka Rajya Sabha for their expertise in "specific fields of art, literature, science, and social service". By this logic, I am sceptical whether Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is a correct choice!!
