Parliament yesterday paved the way for corporate houses to enter the banking sector by approving the banking bill, a key reform legislation pending for long. Parliament also passed the amendments to the debt recovery laws or Sarfesi law after a reply by Finance Minister P Chidambaram on the combined discussion on the two bills in Rajya Sabha.
Rajya Sabha okays banking laws amendment bill Parliament Thursday passed the banking laws amendment bill, paving the way for issuance of new bank licences and consolidation in the sector. The Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2012, which has now been cleared by both houses of parliament, seeks to increase voting rights of investors in the private sector banks to 26 percent from the existing 10 percent. This will make the Indian banking sector attractive for the overseas investors and is expected to lead to consolidation in the industry. Pranab Kumar Mukherjee is the 13th and current President of India, in office since July 2012. BJP-RS Cong stalled RS to avoid govt's reply on Aircel-Maxis deal:BJP New Delhi, May 22 (PTI) BJP today accused the Congress of hatching a "plot" with its allies to stall the proceedings in the Rajya Sabha to avoid the government's reply on the Aircel- Maxis deal. "It was of course a contrived stalling as we expected stalling of the House. The UPA government per se got together to stall it. It's a charge against the UPA government and the country would remain aghast that the facts which we wanted to ascertain from the Finance Minister were not given to us," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy told reporters here.
