How much longer do you think the veteran players like Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal will play? Retirement?
"It was fifteen years ago exactly. Boris Becker and Steffi Graf had just retired a few weeks earlier, Roger Federer was just beginning on the tour, Rafael Nadal was losing against Richard Gasquet in junior tournaments, and Grigor Dimitrov was starting elementary school. It was summer the 1999 and Serena Williams, not even 18 yet and not a good little girl, won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open" ^^

Follow Sportsmail's coverage of Wimbledon 2014 as former champions Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams all begin their quest for glory on the lawns of SW19.
Last year's Wimbledon was the most unpredictable in memory. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova - owners of a combined 10 titles at the All England Club - were all gone by the end of the second round. Five-time champion Serena Williams left in the fourth. Add in the record-equaling withdrawals or mid-match retirements because of health problems. And to cap it all, Andy Murray finally gave Britain the men's champion it had wanted for more than three-quarters of a century. What might 2014 have in store? Here are five things to watch at Wimbledon, where play begins Monday: 'MURRESMO': The pairing of Murray and his new coach, Amelie Mauresmo, was quickly dubbed ''Murresmo,'' and their partnership is sure to draw a lot of notice. For one thing, Murray won the grass-court Grand Slam tournament - the first British man in 77 years to do so - with Ivan Lendl in his corner a year ago. For another, it's unusual for a top male tennis player to be coached by a woman. But Murray was coached for years by his ...
French Open Day 4 Recap - The women today decided to go off the cuff with six upsets. The biggest upset of the day came at the hands of the 20-year old Spanish youngster, Garbine Muguruza. She handed No. 1 Serena Williams her worst loss ever with a score of 6-2, 6-2. In Serena's post match press conference, she said that nothing was working for her today. She also congratulated her opponent on her play and said that Muguruza would win Roland Garros if she continued to play the way she did today. However, not more than 63 minutes prior to this surprise did No. 29 Venus Williams lose to the 19-year old Slovakian Anna Schmiedlova. Everyone was looking forward to a third round match up of the Williams sister but will now have to settle for two up and coming players. No. 16 Sabine Lisicki ended up retiring in the second set of her match with a wrist injury. During the second game of the match, she took a tumble and landed on her wrist. After receiving medical attention, she was never able to really play her .. ...

Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams play tennis in swimming pool in Paris.
French Open With the French Open kicking off tonight, here are my picks for the tournament! The bookies have narrowed it down to a 2 horse race in the men's field with Novak Djokovic ($2.30) edging Rafael Nadal ($2.50) for favoritism. I can't see anyone outside of these 2 winning the tournament as well. Nadal at $2.50 is an absolute steal. Yes Novak has beaten him in the last 4 meetings and he hasn't been at his best, but Rafa is 59-1 in Paris and has won 8 of the last 9 Grand Slams there & is no doubt the best clay courter ever. Moving up from 3 to 5 set matches suits him to a tee here. Some markets have a Djokovic & Nadal final @ $2.40 which is also great value. In the women's draw Serena Williams ($2.20) is very short and clay is probably her worst surface but she is a class above when she is 100% fit. Li Na $6.50 is good value coming off an Aussie Open win and her opponent in that final, Dominika Cibulkova ($67) is massive overs. The clay suits her grinding style of game and as a top 10 player she'll ...

The draw has been set. The clay has been combed. All of the top players are in Paris. It's time for the French Open to begin. This year, the tournament feels a bit more up in the air than usual. Rafael Nadal still had the best clay season out of anyone, but it wasn't up to his lofty standards. The Spaniard only won one title, and lost in two straight quarterfinals to lower-ranked countrymen. Novak Djokovic beat him in the final of the Rome Masters last week to set up plenty of intrigue between the top two players in the world. On the women's side, Serena Williams is the favorite as always, but there are plenty of other contenders. Maria Sharapova continues her revival on clay, Simona Halep is looking to finally make a big move at a major and Ana Ivanovic has been turning the clock back to 2008, the year she won this tournament. As soon as the draws for major tournaments are released, fans look ahead to which players will be competing in quarterfinals and semifinals. However, this year's French Open will f ...
The French Open always presents a unique test. The second major of the season is the only one contested on clay, which requires a different skill set. It also starts a very busy stretch that continues through Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Players are focused on setting a positive tone they can build from in the months ahead. Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams were the stars who accomplished that goal last year with triumphs at Roland Garros. It was Nadal's eighth French championship and Williams' second. Both the Spaniard and the American return with hope of defending their titles. There are 127 other players on each side looking to end those dreams. Where: Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France When: Sunday, May 25 - Sunday, June 8 Nadal is the unquestioned "King of Clay." The tennis tours arrived in the capital of Spain with doubts and questions. Two weeks later, they leave the capital of Italy with a sense of order that seems both traditional and renewed. Jack’s Tennis Tip – Racket talent or athletic ability? I have a theory that you can put tennis players (any player) into one of two categories. They either fall under the category of 'racket talented' or 'athlete.' I made up this theory quite a while ago but I still think it is valid. There are a few players that confuse me but for the most part I think my theory holds true. Obviously the lines blur in some instances and without a doubt all of the players on the professional tour are racket talented and supremely athletic too, but bear with me; Rafael Nadal - athlete Novak Djokovic - athlete Stanislas Wawrinka - racket talented Juan Martin Del Potro - racket talented David Ferrer - athlete Andy Murray - athlete Tomas Berdych - racket talented Roger Federer - racket talented Richard Gasquet - racket talented Jo-Wilfried Tsonga - athlete Kei Nishikori - racket talented Gael Monfils - athlete Milos Raonic - racket talented John Isner - racket talented Grigor Dimitrov - racket talented Serena Williams - A ...

Aussie Open: Nadal, Serena face tricky ties World number one Rafael Nadal will battle Bernard Tomic and a partisan crowd in the first round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park as he bids for a 14th Grand Slam title, according to RTE.ie. The Spaniard dumped the bad boy of Australian tennis out of the event in 2011, but will be wary of the former Wimbledon quarter-finalist. The tournament, which begins on Monday, ends on January 26. The women’s draw elicited further groans for local fans, with world number one Serena Williams drawing rising Australian talent Ashleigh Barty in the first round as the American bids for her 18th Grand Slam title and sixth at Melbourne Park. LeBron took honor that belonged to Rafa By Peter Bodo | December 30, 2013 10:08:43 AM PST The honors continued to roll in for Serena Williams last week, the latest one bestowed upon her by the Associated Press news service. The AP named Williams its Female Athlete of the Year for 2013. Her male counterpart was LeBron James of the NBA’s Miami Heat. OK, I’m a tennis journalist, so I’m prejudiced. But it seems to me that you can make a better case for Rafael Nadal than James this year, even though the latter is also a stupendous athlete. Here it is: • James is a team player who most likely would not have earned this honor if the San Antonio Spurs had beaten the Heat in that tense, classic seven-game NBA Finals. Perhaps it’s significant that the only other NBA stars who won the AP award in the past, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan (a three-time winner), also did it in years when their teams won the NBA championship. By contrast, Nadal is an individual who dominated tennis for significant periods witho ...

China Open: Serena struggles, Djokovic and Nadal sail through 01 Oct 2013 , Beijing, October 01, 2013 Top seed Serena Williams stumbled her way into the third round of the China Open on Tuesday while men's favourites Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal powered through their opening matches. The world number one Williams at times appeared agitated during her 6-4, 7-5 victory over Italian Francesca Schiavone, shouting at herself over lost points. The American only showed rare moments of her trademark power-play, gaining the upper hand in the first set via a mistake from her opponent, who double-faulted on set point. The top seed Williams was forced to become more aggressive in the second set after her serve was broken in the first game by Schiavone, Italy's first Grand Slam winner, at Roland Garros in 2010, and the current world number 50. Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams didn’t need to win the U.S. Open, which concluded on Monday in New York, to join tennis’s pantheon; they have been a prominent part of it for some time now. Nadal had progressed from being a wrinkle in the argument that Roger Federer was the greatest male player of all time to being a contender for the honour himself. Serena, after her first-round defeat at Roland Garros last year, had dominated the women’s tour, winning three of five Grand Slam titles, an Olympic singles gold and causing former players of the stature of John Mcenroe, Martina Navratilova, and Chris Evert to suggest that there hadn’t been a better female player. Neither Nadal’s 13th major nor Serena’s 17th were records. Federer (17) and Pete Sampras (14) lead the men’s list while Margaret Court (24), Steffi Graf (22), Helen Wills Moody (19), Evert and Navratilova (18 each) top the women’s. But what Nadal’s second U.S. crown and Serena’s fifth did was advance their cases so strongly that ...

Snapshots of 2013 titles won by Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams
Some things really puzzle me several tennis players win multiple Grand Slams and get no recognition yet just because Andy Murray wins Wimbledon he is worthy of a knighthood I think its totally pathetic, Virginia Wade won the Wimbledon title in 1977 and she was never made a Dame so what is the difference. Serena Williams & Venus Williams have won 5 Wimbledon titles, Rafael Nadal has won 2 Wimbledon titles, Roger Federer has won 7 Wimbledon titles, Maria Sharapova has won 1 Wimbledon title and do they get any recognition just for winning Wimbledon no they do not. If anyone should be knighted it should be soldiers in the army who do a far more important job fighting for their country and risk their lives on a daily basis. Andy Murray stands on a tennis court hitting a ball from one side to the other and gets paid millions just for doing that its totally out of order. Serena Williams has won 16 Grand Slams in Singles, 13 Grand Slams in Doubles, 2 Grand Slams in Mixed Doubles and 4 Olympic Gold Medals (1 in Si ...
Still can't believe Serena Williams went out of Wimbledon and Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal and Rodger Federer
Marion Bartoli's near-perfect day ... LONDON -- The big, flat-out hitters -- Serena Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova -- were already chilling at home when the women's semifinals unfurled Thursday. That they also were the top three seeds here at the All England Club says a lot about today's game. Big is almost always better, but this retro final four has something different: variety. It happened on the men's side, when Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal succumbed to crazed, net-crashing volleyers named Steve Darcis and Sergiy Stakhovsky. As Martina Navratilova wrote in her Thursday column in the Times of London, all four women's semifinalists could have played in the wooden racket era. Their average height -- about 5-foot-7 -- isn't all that far beyond the height of an average woman. They resist the urge to hit everything hard and harder; rather, they have a pleasing array of spins and speeds for any occasion. Even Sabine Lisicki, the most powerful of the group, unleashed a hail of drop shots in ...
SW19 is so unforgiving. First it was Rafael Nadal, next Roger Federer and then Sharapova is out too! Will Serena William survive next round?
LONDON (AP) -- Back in her comfort zone on Centre Court, Serena Williams delivered an overpowering statement: When her serve is steaming, she's the woman to beat at Wimbledon. Putting aside her recent comments that led to a couple of apologies and a brief spat with Maria Sharapova, Williams looked every bit the five-time champion. She began her Wimbledon title defense with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mandy Minella of Luxembourg. ''For me, it's the greatest moment for a tennis player, to walk out on Centre Court,'' Williams said after her first match at Wimbledon since winning the Olympic gold medal there last year. ''That was such a great moment, too. So many great memories on this court.'' Top-ranked Novak Djokovic also opened with a straight-sets victory, beating Florian Mayer of Germany 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Mayer is a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist, losing to Djokovic at that stage last year. But he was never in danger of springing another stunner following Rafael Nadal's first-round exit a day earlier. Djok ...
After the shock exit of Rafael Nadal on Day 1, Wimbledon was primed for another day of thrilling action including No.1 seeds Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic. There was also a brilliant win for Laura Robson
Wimbledon Tennis Championships begins in London Jun 24 The 127th edition of the Wimbledon Tennis Championship begins in London on Monday. The top seeds like Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are taking part in this competition. While Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupati, Rohan Bopanna with their partners will take part in men's doubles, Sania Mirza will be playing women's doubles with her American partner Leizel Huber. The duo of Divij Sharan and Purav Raja will play their first ever Grand Slam match today. A report. The first Indian who played at the Wimbledon, was Sardar Nihal Singh in 1908. Later, Vijay Amritraj from Madras has been a regular to the Wimbledon since 1969. He had the distinction of reaching the quarter-final stage in 1973 and then again in 1981. In 1999, top seeds Leander Paes and his partner Mahesh Bhupathi created history by becoming the first Indians to win a major title at the Wimbledon. Since then Paes has lifted mixed double troph ...
As I wake up, I wake up to some foolery...but then I remember its SW19, Wimbledon time. Tennis all day for 2 weeks, nobody could ruin my day. TTYL. Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, and many more. So excited.
Wimbledon! Yay!!! My predictions: Men's Singles - Rafael Nadal, Women's Singles - Serena Williams. I think it will be a Nadal/Djokovic final and a Williams/Sharapova final.
ESPN pundits John Mcenroe and Chris Evert gave their thoughts on who they think will be holding the trophies at the end of the Wimbledon fortnight. Wimbledon.com joined in to hear their views... In the days leading up to a major, the talk in the tennis world is always around who is favoured to take home the trophy at the close of the fortnight. In the case of The Championships 2013, Serena Williams is the leading candidate among the women. The 31-year-old Williams is the world No.1, the top seed and the defending champion who is fresh off a title at Roland Garros and riding a 31-match winning streak that dates back to March. But on the men's side, it's not as easy for the 127th Championships. Top seed Novak Djokovic won the year's opening major in Australia, but Rafael Nadal stormed back from injury to capture his record eighth title in Paris earlier this month. Roger Federer, a seven-times winner at Wimbledon, is the defending champion here. But it's actually Andy Murray who was technically the last to h ...

What a fantastic night for combat sports yesterday. Seems like boxing decided yesterday was knockout night with 5 KO's total. None more impressive then Adonis Stevenson's brutal one punch KO of Chad Dawson. Then the UFC on Fuel 10 had a record setting 8 submissions. Add to that a 1st round barnburner KO of Feijao by Thiago Silva. Dominating performances by Rafael Nadal & Serena Williams at the French Open. The Bruins make their way to the Stanley Cup finals against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Red Sox take 2 out of 3 games & Jimmie Johnson wins at Pocono Overall a fantastic weekend for sports fans. Just hope the Spurs can pull another game out tonight.

champion French Open 2013.. go Rafael Nadal!
Today s quote in honour of Rafael Nadal (and Serena Williams), who win or lose, has taught me something about the human spirit in getting where he is today after the French Open final! People dream of being rich and famous. The idea of the lifestyle we all think they live is hard to resist when our lives seem hard and mundane. Here are two rich and famous who through sheer grit and determination, through hard work, pain, fear and frustration, have picked themselves up after injury, and dragged themselves to the top of their game! Do you think the "rich and famous" part had anything to do with it? Other than to make their fear of failure in full public view greater than most of us could bear?

PARIS (AP) -- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's hopes of ending France's 30-year wait for a men's Grand Slam champion faded with a whimper, and instead it will be two players from neighboring Spain in Sunday's French Open final between Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer.

Most of the top seeded players have made it through the first three rounds of the French Open, the exceptions being Tomas Berdych, Li Na and Caroline Wozniaki. However, top men's seed, Novak Djokovic, has so far not demonstrated his tennis prowess while King of Clay, Rafael Nadal, struggled through his first two games dropping two sets early in the championship. It would seem that Roger Federer and Serena Williams are in top form and have so far had easy rides against their opponents. But who will be crowned Roland Garros 2013 Champion? Will Rafael Nadal lynch a historic nineth French Open title? DSTV brings us the action live from the French capital.

The big four Grand Slams will obviously be the highlight of the calendar year in Tennis . Last season Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray all claimed one each. Will it be a return to a more dominant year for the Serb, Novak Djokovic though, with Nadal still struggling with fitness problems and Federer heading to the twilight years of his career? In the women’s category, can world number one Victoria Azarenka hold off the challenges of Serena Williams? Will Maria Sharapova make a bigger impact? The action starts mid January with the Australian Open, followed by the French Open in May, Wimbledon in July and the US Open to round off the Slam series in August. So much to look out for in the world of tennis in 2013.

Smack talk in tennis? Two of the top men's tennis players in the world have been complaining about the blue clay surface at the Madrid Open. Novak Djokovic [Jock-o-vich] and Rafael Nadal have gone so far as to threaten to boycott the Madrid event next year unless they bring back traditional red dirt.
