World Cup 2014 Dutch stun Mexico with last-gasp win Sun 29 Jun '14 | © Reuters Netherlands substitute Klaas-Jan Huntelaar set up one goal and converted a penalty in the dying minutes as they recovered to beat Mexico 2-1 in an astonishing finale to their World Cup last 16 clash on Sunday. The result condemned the unfortunate Mexicans, who were 1-0 up with two minutes to go and seemingly headed for the last 16 for the first time since 1986, to a sixth second-round exit in six consecutive tournaments. Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder broke Mexican hearts when he drilled home an unstoppable half-volley to equalise after a knock down from Huntelaar following a corner. With extra time looming, the Netherlands' livewire winger Arjen Robben weaved into the penalty area and went down under a challenge from Mexico captain Rafael Marquez. The Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca pointed to the spot and Huntelaar calmly sent goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa the wrong way with a perfectly executed penalty kick. The Dutch, who ...

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored an injury-time penalty to complete a dramatic comeback for Netherlands in a 2-1 win over Mexico and book their place in the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup. Giovani Dos Santos opened the scoring for Mexico in sweltering conditions in Fortaleza, only for Wesley Sneijder and Huntelaar to net late goals and set up a meeting with the winner of Costa Rica versus Greece. Mexico enjoyed a bright start to the game as Miguel Layun drove a cross wide on 14 minutes, before Hector Herrera dragged an effort off target and then Dos Santos drew a save from the legs of goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen. Robin van Persie spurned an opportunity for Netherlands in the 27th minute, slicing wide, and just before half-time Arjen Robben had a strong shout for a penalty turned down following challenges by Rafael Marquez and Hector Moreno. Mexico took the lead three minutes into the second half when Dos Santos unleashed a left-footed shot from outside the area to flash the ball beyond the reach of Cilless ...

Predictions for today 4..6.2014 Mexico - Bosnia & Herzegovina - Qver 2.5 Mexico and Bosnia-Herzegovina are against each other tonight in this International Friendly match. This match will be played in Soldier Field of Illinois and since it will be played in a neutral venue than both these two teams would feel in the same way playing in this ground ahead of World Cup 2014. Bosnia-Herzegovina comes in this match after a good win that they did just few days ago against Cote d'Ivore with the result 2-1 while Mexico comes after a great win as well against Ecuador with the result 3-1. Mexico has to play in the World Cup 2014 without Luis Montes that was injured in the previous match with Ecuador and Rafael Marquez as well but he's waiting for the medical test to realise how long he will be out for his injury while Bosnia-Herzegovina doesn't have these problems ahead of the World Cup 2014. In my opinion we must see a very tough match between these two great teams but an open match as both these two teams play re ...
Do we really need pre-World Cup friendly matches? With the 2014 FIFA World Cup set to begin in Brazil on June 12, many teams around the globe are playing last minute friendly matches to prepare for the worldwide event. While these games may be enjoyable for the fans, and they may be once in-a-lifetime chances to see their favorite national squads in person, they can also be very costly for these teams. This was evident on Saturday when several players from around the world sustained serious injuries. The friendly between Mexico and Ecuador garnered the most attention as players in that game suffered some of the more serious injuries. Mexico’s Luis Montes (broken tibia and fibula) and Rafael Marquez (foot) were both taken to the hospital after sustaining their injuries. Ecuador’s Segundo Castillo suffered a possible torn ACL on the same play as Montes when both men collided with one another while chasing a loose ball. Montes and Castillo are both out of the World Cup now, while the status of Marquez is ...

UFW filed charges with farm labor board—on top of threecomplaints for company law violations issued by state this year   Fresno, CA—Dozens of Gerawan Farms Inc. workers will protest outside corporate headquarters in Fresno on Thursday over the huge grower’s refusal to recall pro-union workers, including UFW leaders among the work force, during the pruning season. The United Farm Workers also filed formal charges with the Agricultural Labor Relations Board over Gerawan’s alleged illegal discrimination against the workers because of their support for the union.   The normal practice was for the employees to be recalled to their jobs in the pruning in late October or November. The UFW sent a list of eligible workers to Gerawan, asking they be recalled. There was no response. Dozens have not been put back to work, including Gerawan employees such as Rafael Marquez, part of the 25-member union bargaining committee who sat through every negotiating session and meeting betwee ...

Majestic moments from Confederations Cup finals past: 1] After the first three editions were held in Saudi Arabia, Mexico hosted the competition in 1999, and El Tri were given passionate backing as they faced holders Brazil in the final. An incredible 110,000 supporters turned up to watch their heroes crown their superb campaign in the decider, which remained in the balance just beyond the hour mark when Rafael Marquez strode forward to the edge of Brazil's area. With his side winning 3-2, Marquez laid the ball off to Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who danced past Odvan and sent a superb effort past Dida to notch a vitally important 62nd-minute effort. Ze Roberto reduced the deficit almost instantly, but it was not enough to prevent Brazil from surrendering their crown. "When I went forward to attack, I was only thinking about passing the ball to the right team-mate," said Marquez. "Blanco did what he had to do and scored the goal. When I think about all the titles I've won in my career, I tell myself that the Confed ...
FROM Beckham to Brechin. Steven Smith rubbed shoulders with world stars during an eight-month stint in the MLS with Portland Timbers. But the full-back insists getting the unexpected chance to mix it with Second Division journeymen will make him even happier. Smith, 28, admits he never thought he’d be back at Rangers for a second spell when he quit Ibrox in 2010. Now he is ready to help Gers rise again — and claims his States stint made him rediscover his love of football. Smith said: “It’s great to be back. I probably thought the door was closed on me ever returning to Rangers. When I left the club had a really good squad and were signing the likes of Nikica Jelavic. “I loved my time over in America. In my opinion, it did work out for me. “I had a really good season, I got to play in front of massive crowds and I came up against top players. “I played against guys like David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Rafael Marquez and Tim Cahill. “It also helped me fall in love with football again because ...

On a mildly cold spring night in Manchester, Paul Scholes scored a rocket from 25 yards to put the final nail in the coffin of Frank Rijkaard’s reign at the Nou Camp. What had been suspected for quite some time, looked inevitable now. A 4-year-long journey, which began in 2004, seemed destined to conclude very shortly. And so it did. On the night of May 8, bitter rivals Real Madrid mauled Barcelona at the Camp Nou. But the night had grown sour on more than just one tone. President Laporta announced that Frank Rijkaard would be stepping down as manager come the end of the season. What seemed inevitable for quite some time, finally took place. It almost fell that an era had come to an end. An era in which the world saw the best of Ludovic Guily, Rafael Marquez, Deco and above all, the might of the Samba Star – Ronaldinho. The 2007-08 season was a disastrous campaign for Barcelona on all fronts. On the field, the team lost out on the League to rivals Real Madrid and were knocked out of the European Cup b ...
By Chris Williams: It looks like WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (30-1, 19 KO’s) will continue on his course of fighting older fighters, as he’s being talked about fighting former IBF/WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (47-6-2, 22 KO’s) in the first part of next year, according to the Manila Bulletin. Donaire was supposed to fight Mijares earlier this year, but HBO said no to that fight. Donaire then opted to fight IBF super bantamweight champion Jeffrey Mathebula. If HBO said no once to a Mijares fight I wonder if they’ll change their mind about this now? Mijares stopped a past his prime Rafael Marquez last month in a 9th round stoppage, but Mijares hardly looked good. Marquez had him on the ropes in the 1st round and was really teeing off on Mijares when the flow of the fight was stopped due to a head-butt.
