In a show of sportsmanship rarely seen at the professional level, especially at a crucial moment in one of sports' biggest events, Novak Djokovic gave his opponent a critical point during his second-round match at Wimbledon. The moment came late in the fourth set with Djokovic and Radek Stepanek tied 5-5 and Djokovic leading 2-1 in sets. Djokovic was one point from going up 6-5 in the set when a ball hit deep by Stepanek was ruled out just before Djoker hit the ball into the net. Stepanek, who had been playing shots deep near the line all match, was immediately in disbelief. He emphatically challenged the call. The replay system showed that the ball was indeed in, much to the delight of the crowd looking for a fifth set. But here is where things get tricky. Since the call was made in a spot where Djokovic could have played the ball, the umpire called for a replay of the point. The thinking is that the call could have affected Djokovic's ability to make a play. Stepanek appeared to question the decision bu ...

Even if Radek Stepanek loses this tiebreak and ultimately the match, he deserves a pat on the back, he played commendably.
I always love watching Radek Stepanek play, but Djokovic is just too good !
Radek Stepanek is a great example of sport. His age is against him, he probably wont win, but his effort is admirable
Meanwhile, radek stepanek is playing some great tennis. May be the most unfortunate player on tour

"Andy Murray talks Wimbledon, the World Cup and the return of short shorts" "How do you sleep at night?" is not a question you think of with a tennis player. Perhaps a convicted criminal but not a sportsman who provides unwavering joy to spectators devouring strawberries and sipping on champagne every June. Sitting opposite the man who’s about to defend the first British men’s singles title in 78 years, you’d be surprised at how it springs to mind. The pressure? The physical demand? The weight of national responsibility? How do you cope? Pretty well, apparently. Meeting at Wimbledon’s Cannizaro House hotel, Andy Murray looked remarkably relaxed considering he’d lost against Radek Stepanek at Queen’s only a few days earlier. Sporting an Adidas polo with a Lego-green trim, the Wimbledon champion commented, “Someone told me the other day that there was a poll on the BBC or Sky or something that asked if I was going to successfully defend my title and something like 85% of people said no”. Aft ...

12 Jun: It wasn't a good day for a couple of big names on the grass courts of Germany and UK as Rafa Nadal (l. Dustin Brown) and Andy Murray (l. Radek Stepanek) were dumped out in their openers at Halle and Queens, respectively. Roger Federer (d. João Sousa) had to overturn a one-set deficit to proceed at the Gerry Weber Open. Stanislas Wawrinka (d. Sam Querrey), though, needed all of 50 minutes to book his spot in the last 8 at the Queens Club.

While doing research for an article I'm writing, I found this interesting tidbit: "In a 2007 US Open match, Novak Djokovic beat Radek Stepanek in an epic 5 set match. In this match, Stepanek ran close to 8km (5 miles), while Djokovic only ran 5.6km (3.5 miles). Indeed the values can vary greatly in tennis, as a player winning an easy game in 3 sets can run as little as 1.6km (1 mile)." I really, really miss tennis. I think I haven't played in. 3 years? Probably a little longer than that. That's SO SAD. I would run to the nearest tennis court right now but my shoulder *** these days (tendonitis, my bored doctor says). I remember having the same discussion with several guys at Gallaudet when they would say "You play tennis? LOL easy sport, you just skip and hop like a rich lady.." and I would challenge them to a match. And then they would lose, covered in sweat and panting, and admit that tennis is a SPORT. And I'm not even THAT good. Tennis ROCKS. Ok, back to work...

Top seed Rafa Nadal will open his Indian Wells title defence against Radek Stepanek after the Czech overcame a poor second set to beat Denis Istomin 6-1 3-6 6-1 in the first round. Stepanek, ranked 50th in the world, was broken only once and did not double fault but needed nearly two hours to defeat the Uzbek. Also on Thursday, Lleyton Hewitt notched his 599th career win when he beat fellow Australian Matthew Ebden 7-6(2) 3-6 6-3. Hewitt will try for his 600th career victory in a second round encounter against South African Kevin Anderson, who has been a losing finalist in his past two ATP events. Among all the Super Bowl craziness this weekend, I'll be splitting my focus between American Football's largest game and another international sporting event. Thursday’s second women’s singles semifinal pits No. 5 seed Agnieszka Radwanska, fresh off her upset of two-time defending champion Victoria Azarenka, against No. 20 Dominika Cibulkova. Radwanska leads their head-to-head 5-1. Thursday’s men’s semifinal matches No. 7 seed Tomas Berdych, who ousted third seed David Ferrer, against No. 8 Stanislas Wawrinka, who upset three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic. Wawrinka holds an 8-5 career advantage and has won their three most recent meetings. But Berdych beat him a year ago in Davis Cup in four sets and, with Radek Stepanek, won the doubles over him and Marco Chiudinelli in a monster 24-22 fifth set. The TV ratings should be good in Switzerland with Roger Federer showcased on Wednesday night and Wawrinka 24 hours later. Day 11 preview: Great expectations Wednesday, 22 January, 2014 Eugenie Bouchard generated more hits on on Tuesday, after her big win over Ana Ivanovic, than either Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal. A 2012 Wimbledon junior champion, the 19-year-old Canadian will now be inside the top-20 in next week’s new WTA rankings. She plays Li Na in Thursday afternoon’s semifinals. What’s most noticeable about Bouchard is that she views her success as simply a matter of course. It’s as if she were a student who does her homework and automatically expects to get a good grade. Of course, it ain’t that easy in tennis – thousands of Eugenie Bouchards fall by the wayside every year. “It’s something I’ve been doing since I was five years old, working my whole life for and sacrificing a lot of things for,” said Bouchard, sounding almost detached about everything – including joining Carling Bassett (US Open 1984) as the only Canadian to reach a Grand Slam semifinal. “So it’s not exactly a su ...

Klaasen through to Aussie Open semi-finals South African Raven Klaasen is through to the semi-finals of the Australian Open in Melbourne, writes Mark Etheridge. Playing with partner Eric Butorac, Klaasen notched up a three-set victory against the UK/Philippines combination of Dominic Inglot and Treat Huey on Tuesday. The duo needed a total of 2hr 08min before winning 6-7 (3) 7-6 (6) 6-4. It was touch and go as to whether the unseeded Klaasen and Butorac would book their place in the semi as their opponents led 4-3 in the final set but astoundingly let four break points go a-begging. As far as the aces stakes went, Klaasen and Butorac had nine, two less than Huey and Inglot but in terms of service statistics were on top with a 74% first service success compared to 62%. A measure of the close competition was that they had just one more winner (51-50) and one more unforced error (16-15). Klaasen and Butorac will now face either unseeded Aussies Alex Bolt and Andrew Whittington or eighth seeds Daniel Nestor ( ...

I decided to risk it and thankfully my camera lens did not break - Radek Stepanek.
Good day to everyone!!! Hope everyone is having a wonderful Sunday so far :D It's early morning in Melbourne with Day 8 of the Aussie Open looming with exciting tennis action. I know yesterday was full of amazing tennis with some expected results and some not so expected. Novak Djokovic showed his usual brilliance on a tennis court and was not hindered by the flashy and unpredictable style of his Italian opponent. He dropped only 5 games to Fabio Fognini as he cruised into the final 8. Stanislas Wawrinka also dispatched the veteran Spaniard Tommy Robredo for the first time in 7 encounters. Although he got it done in straight sets, the last two came down to two close tiebreaks. This victory sends Stan into the final 8 where he will see a very familiar foe. It's a rematch of his epic 5 set match against Nole last year one round earlier. I'm curious to see if this year will be any different. Tomas Berdych had no trouble in his match with Kevin Anderson. He moves onto the last 8 with a straight sets ...

Australian Open 2014 Federer Sets Slam Streak; Tsonga Cruises Melbourne, Australia by ATP Staff | 14.01.2014 Roger Federer stepped onto Rod Laver Arena for the start of his record 57th straight Grand Slam tournament Tuesday afternoon, and dismissed 21-year-old Australian wild card James Duckworth 6-4, 6-4, 6-2. With coach Stefan Edberg watching from his box, the 32-year-old Swiss created 17 break point chances and capitalised four times to close out the win in one hour and 46 minutes. "It was not much rhythm out there," said Federer. "It was a matter of getting the job done and not getting broken. So it was a solid match from start to finish. Could have maybe won a few more break points here and there, but who cares now?" Federer, who is chasing his fifth Australian Open title, hasn't missed a Grand Slam tournament since the 1999 US Open. He surpassed the mark previously held by South African Wayne Ferreira, who appeared in 56 straight majors from the 1992 through 2003 Australian Opens. "Clearly that's a ...

11-01-14 SATURDAY SPORTS CHANNEL AROUND THE WORLD TENNIS AUSTRALIA Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina serves to Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic during their men's singles quarter final match at the Sydney International. Juan Martin del Potro continued his encouraging buildup to the Australian Open by reaching the semi-finals of the Sydney International on Thursday, but women’s contender Petra Kvitova was stunned by a Bulgarian qualifier in the last four.
Top Seed Juan Martin Del Potro edged Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic in three sets to move into the Semifinals of the Apia International. The Argentine was thoroughly tested by the 35 year old Czech but finally emerged victorious, courtesy his big serves and heavy ground strokes.
Czech tennis couple Petra Kvitova and Radek Stepanek, both in town for Apia International Sydney 2014, took some time out from their preparations to visit the Sydney Tower Sky Deck on Monday.
Tournament No.2 seed Petra Kvitova finished her duties at the Sydney International on Tuesday before her boyfriend, despite getting on court after Radek Stepanek.
Keeping up the ‘Paes’ Leander Paes turned 40 this June. Less than three months later on Sunday, he won his 14th Grand Slam title, combining with Radek Stepanek to clinch the US Open men’s doubles. The fourth seeded Indo-Czech players dominated their victory over Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares in New York in straight sets making it 6-1 and 6-3 in under one hour and 13 minutes. This was Paes’ and Stepanek’s second major title together after their Australian Open win last year. At 40, Paes has eight men’s doubles Grand Slam titles under his racket and 14 overall. He also set a record of sorts, becoming the oldest man to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era. The feat is testimony to the willpower and character of one of India’s greatest sportsmen. And inimitably, Paes said it better than anyone could: "We both come from humble backgrounds and from countries where tennis wasn`t necessarily the number one sport. We both fought against adversity to get to where we are. So age is just a number fo ...
and Alize Cornet will debut tomorrow in the Hopman Cup in Perth, Australia against Radek Stepanek and Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic at 5:30 pm local time(10:30 am CET).
The Hopman Cup 2014 Teams I love the Hopman Cup. The tournament always attracts great players, which makes for great tennis, and the format of men and women playing together in a team for their country is really unique. Plus it signals the start of the 2014 Australian Open series. The teams are listed in order of seeding, with the player’s world rankings as at 9 December 2013 shown in brackets: 1. SPORTS Djokovic, Nadal, Murray shine in Davis Cup national duty Novak Djokovic produced a masterful performance on Sunday to help Serbia roar back to defeat Canada 3-2 and set up a Davis Cup final against the Czech Republic. On a weekend in which the sport's biggest names, with the exception of Roger Federer, put their individual schedules to one side and donned national colors instead, Djokovic helped ensure Serbia stayed on course to repeat their 2010 triumph. Rafael Nadal, fresh from winning his 13th Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open, helped Spain crush Ukraine to retain their place in the World Group while world number three Andy Murray steered Britain back among the elite with three points in his side's playoff victory over a weakened Croatia. In a sport where individual prizes dominate the calendar the Davis Cup is often regarded as a sideshow but try telling that to the 15,000 fans who produced a deafening roar in Belgrade. Serbia trailed 2-1 going into Sunday's two singles rubbers before Djokovic ...

Wimbledon lost seven former No.1 players on Black Wednesday : Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki, Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic and Lleyton Hewitt. That also includes players who suffered walkover and mid-match retirements: second-seeded Victoria Azarenka (walkover, right knee), men’s No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (retirement, left knee), John Isner (retirement, left knee) and Steve Darcis (walkover, right shoulder), 10th-seeded Marin Cilic (walkover, left knee), 2006 quarterfinalist Radek Stepanek (retirement, left hamstring); and Yaroslava Shvedova (walkover, right arm). The International Tennis Federation said the seven players forced out is believed to be the most in one day at any Grand Slam event in the 45 years of the Open era.
THE NEWS OF WIMBLEDON 2013- Upset losses by Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova highlighted an astounding Day 3 at Wimbledon. SB Nation's Bill Connelly wrote that "there has possibly never been a day like this in tennis' long history," as favored players were defeated in droves to open up the field of championship contenders on both draws. Federer's loss to 116th-ranked Igor Sergiy Stakhovsky and Sharapova's loss to 131st-ranked Michelle Larcher de Brito were written about here and here. Federer's 6-7, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6 loss to Stakhovsky ended a record streak of 36 consecutive quarterfinals appearances in Grand Slam tournaments stretching back to 2003. Sharapova seemed to struggle with an injury during her match, but at least finished for a 6-3, 6-4 loss. More: SB Nation's full coverage of 2013 Wimbledon Six major names were forced to retire before or during matches Wednesday. Connelly listed the casualties: Victoria Azarenka, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Marin Cilic, John Isner, Radek Stepanek and Day 1 star Steve Dar ...
WACKY WEDNESDAY AT WIMBLEDON It was a strange Wednesday at Wimbledon. The headlines of the day were the shock upsets of Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova. But in total seven former world no. 1 players failed to advance beyond the second round today, including Ana Ivanovic, Lleyton Hewitt, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Jankovic. Victoria Azarenka was the seventh no. 1 to depart, withdrawing from her match today due to an injury sustained in her previous match, as did Steve Darcis, the player who upset Rafa Nadal in the first round on Monday. John Isner injured his knee in his first service game and had to retire. Marin Cilic, Radek Stepanek, and Jo Wilfried Tsonga were also injured in their matches and retired. Yaroslava Shvedova also withdrew, bringing the total of withdrawals and retirements on one day to seven, a record for a single day in a Grand Slam. Hopefully all the players can make speedy recoveries and get back on the courts soon.
FedEx, Sharapova ,Hewitt out! Victoria Azarenka, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Radek Stepanek, Steve Darcis, Marin Cilic, John Isner and Yaroslava Shvedova retired hurt!!! What is happening? Looks like a Djoko-Andy final or is it the start of a new era?
SPEECHLESS. What a ruthless slaughter at Wimbledon - the likes of which I've never seen. 2nd round Federer is GONE. 36 straight quarterfinals in a row Grand Slam record from him GONE. Tsonga injured and GONE. Cilic injured and GONE. Isner injured and GONE. Benneteau GONE. The veteran Radek Stepanek injured and GONE. Lleyton Hewitt GONE. Steve Darcis (who just beat Nadal) GONE. On the women's side, Azarenka injured and GONE. Sharapova GONE. Wozniacki GONE. Ivanovic GONE. Jankovic GONE. Cirstea GONE. A historic record shattered. 11 seeds eliminated - 5 of them because of injuries. And the greatest player of all time has fallen in the 2nd round. Wow.
Victoria Azarenka, Steve Darcis, John Isner, Radek Stepanek, Marin Cilic, Yaroslava Shvedova, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga..had to pull out for injury
All purpose parts banner
OK Wimbledon is just crazy today. The number of well known players forced to withdraw because of injury has to be a major concern. Throw in a handful of upsets and crazy is the only way to describe the day. On the women's side Azarenka withdrew, Sharapova loses (slipping and apparently suffering an injury during the match), Wozniacki lost and Ivanovic lost (to Canadian Eugenie Bouchard) On the Men's side today Tsonga retired with an injury during his match, Cilic withdrew with an injury, John Isner retired with an injury. There were also other matches where players pulled out due to injury including Shvedova, Radek Stepanek and Darcis (the guy who beat Nadal the other day).
