Bob writes, I drove a NYC taxi-night shift -for about 10 years. It was fascinating. The city and its inhabitants exude energy in all its forms, including; perverts living out their fantasy, hedonists revelling in self satisfaction, the working class struggling-successfully-to make ends meet, the greedy accumulating-yet never enough, youths in search of mates, junkies looking to roll a cabbie, towering edifices reconditioning their environment and ablaze with lights, gourmands on route to a new restaurant in hopes of a truly great meal, steam spewing from the sewer gratings-as if the city itself cooks, hustlers and more hustlers-in NYC even the "bums" hustle. A throng exists Lincoln Center, another from the Garden, another from the Public Theater, twelve hundred insiders in black tie from the Waldorf, dozens of throngs spread out onto Broadway and Eighth Avenues all in search of that often belittled but now prized and invaluable yellow cab. It's good to feel wanted, to be needed. But the cabby must be wary ...
Broadway Pianist Eddie Rabin joins us as accompanist for the recital! Here is his stellar bio! Eddie Rabin (Accompanist) grew up in Brooklyn and was admitted at 16½ to Juilliard, where he graduated with an M.S. degree. He then traveled to France, where he continued his piano studies, and performed at various venues across the country. While there, Eddie became a member of the seminal French Progressive-Rock group, Magma. Back in New York after a few years Mr. Rabin played in the orchestra pit for the 1971 Broadway musical "Oh, Calcutta," the house band at “Catch A Rising Star”---where he accompanied Pat Benatar---and began another aspect of his career as audition pianist at Joe Papp’s Public Theater. Mr. Rabin has basically played for everybody: Lucie Arnaz, Kristin Chenoweth, Tovah Feldshuh, Heather Headley, Linda Ronstadt and our own Colleen Hawks! Eddie has been part of the selection process for "Aida," "Big River," "The Drowsy Chaperone," "Hairspray," "Jersey Boys," "The Lion King," "Next to .. ...
This evening I crossed off another glorious milestone on the road to becoming a True New Yorker! My apartment is on Fifth Avenue, halfway between the Empire State and the Flatiron Building - Tourist Central. Of course, people on holiday are oblivious to the fact that this is not a theme park, but a living, breathing city with 8 million actual people getting on with their actual lives - hurrying for job interviews, late for their first Nerve.com date, meeting the Craigslist person with the Public Theater tix. And so the visitors walk four abreast down the sidewalk, arm in arm, a moving wall of soft Midwestern flesh. For some bizarre reason, their pavement-blocking momentum dies out when they hit the intersections of streets and avenues, where they mill around blankly, chewing cud and ruminating on how to cross the walkway. Those clotted corners are a pet peeve of mine, and so tonight, when a cluster of French tourists suddenly halted at the entrance to the intersection, expanded to wall it off, then stood ...

Favorite 2013 THEATRE productions: Sorry this is so late! I saw a ton of stuff last year and so much of it was great. Here's what impressed me most. Hope it's of interest! FAVE PRODUCTIONS: *I loved Julie Taymor's production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM at the Theatre for a New Audience in Brooklyn. It had a wonderful cast led by Kathyrn Hunter as Puck and Max Casella as Bottom, but the production's star was its director. Taymor is a visionary artist and her production of Shakespeare's comedy was the most beautiful production of the year. I don't care what people say about SPIDERMAN, Taymor is a genius! *I also loved David Rousseve STARDUST at Redcat in LA. Yes, he's one of my best friends, but that has nothing to do with it! Its currently on tour and you should check it out when it arrives in your city. Its a heartbreaking yet exhilarating dance piece, beautifully executed by his company. *THE APPLE PLAYS at the Public Theater in NYC was the theatrical event of the year for me. I saw a marat ...
To the list of actors who have given or are giving extraordinary performances this season--Jefferson Mays (A Gentleman's Guide); Mark Rylance (Twelfe Night and Richard III); Sirs McKellen and Stewart (Godot and No Man's Land); Cherry Jones (Menagerie); Roger Rees (The Winslow Boy); Diane Davis (The Model Apartment); Kathryn Hunter (as Puck, lol, in A Midsummer's Night's Dream); and, OMG, Eileen Atkins (All that Fall), I now add a name I had never heard before I saw Brecht's The Good Person of Szechuan at the Public Theater: Taylor Mac. Mr. Mac plays a female prostitute and also puts on a suit and mustache to play her cousin. The man defines that overworked word "charisma." The first time he belted out a solo he knocked my socks off--I still can't find them. What a voice! What a season! I have a ticket for Ethan Hawke's Macbeth, and though he got mostly poor reviews I am going with an open mind, quite willing to be won over. I last saw him as Ivanov at the Classic Stage Company in a performance ...

It's the birthday of producer and director Joseph Papp, born in Brooklyn, New York (1921). He became interested in drama when he started going to a movie house where, before the movie started, there was always a stage show with singers, jugglers, and magicians. In 1954, he founded the New York Shakespeare Festival in a church on the Lower East Side. The early productions were staged on almost no budget, and in many cases the actors worked without pay. Because Papp believed that art should be available to everyone, the admission was free. Eventually, he was granted use of the open-air Delacorte Theater in Central Park, and the festival became known as Shakespeare in the Park. He also founded the Public Theater in the old Astor Library to use as a year-round venue that fostered up-and-coming playwrights and actors. At the Public, Papp produced musicals that went on to become hits on Broadway, including The Pirates of Penzance, A Chorus Line, and Hair.

Saw Pirates of Penzance at gala for Shakespeare in the park last nite with Kevin Kline, Martin Short, Glenn C, Norm Lewis, etc... Amazing NYC evening. Public Theater is so special.
Jackie and I saw a dazzling production of "The Pirates of Penzance" in Central Park last night, starring Kevin Kline, Glenn Close and Martin Short, whose way-beyond-hilarious performance of the "the modern major-general" number brought down the house. The event, a fund-raiser for the Public Theater, was dedicated to Nora Ephron, who died a year ago this month at the age of 71.
The Public Theater: Meryl Streep and Sir Howard Stringer to Honor Nora Ephron The Public Theater announced today that Public Theater alumna and Academy Award winner Meryl Streep and Sir Howard Stringer will honor their friend and colleague, the late Nora Ephron, a long-time Public Theater board member, at The Public’s Gala on Monday, June 10 at the Delacorte Theater, where the benefit evening will culminate in a concert performance of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. In collaboration with The Central Park Conservancy and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, The Public Theater will plant a flowering cherry tree in Central Park across from the Delacorte Theater in honor of Ephron, who was a consummate lover of The Public’s free Shakespeare in the Park. A plaque will be mounted outside the Delacorte to memorialize the occasion and Ephron’s dedication to The Public. “Meryl Streep and Howard Stringer will share their history and bond with Nora Ephron,” said Artistic Director Oskar Eustis. ...
Israelian-American Director, Actress NATALIE PORTMAN celebrates her Birthday today. Natalie Portman is an actress with dual American and Israeli citizenship. NEW YORK (AP) — Helen Hanft, the Bronx-born comedic actress who was a leading star of the off-off Broadway theater movement of the 1960s and 70s, has died in New York City. She was 79. Hanft’s longtime publicist and friend Alan Eichler says Saturday she died from intestinal complications Thursday at Roosevelt Hospital. Eichler says Hanft became known as the “Helen Hayes of Off-Off Broadway” for her experimental theater work. She had great personal success in David Rabe’s “In the Boom Boom Room” at Joseph Papp’s Public Theater. Eichler says she commanded the stage “with an Ethel Merman-like bravura.” By the mid-1970s, Hanft appeared in movies, such as Woody Allen’s “Manhattan” and Paul Mazursky’s “Next Stop Greenwich Village.” She is survived by her sister, a niece and nephews.
Finally a product shot! My Act II costume. Today was our final show of the week, our 8th overall of 12. We're just rounding into form. I liken my feelings to leaving on Sunday with your lover for Bali or Kauai. Today is Thursday; Saturday we head home...so it is bittersweet, a somewhat poignant regard for a cherished but shortlived experience. Attending today's matinee were 3 Queens of theater. Hattie Winston Wheeler and I performed in PHOTOGRAPH at the Public Theater. I've enjoyed L. Scott Caldwells work for many years. And Michele Shay and I did AN AMERICAN DOLLS HOUSE in Atlanta. Wonderful to see them again and enjoy their approval. My fellow Rogues came to support. My partner in crime, Ron Bottitta, petite Tara Windley and the ever dangerous Betsy Hinkle Zajko. Tho we've met several times at New Year Days gatherings, I was pleased to have entertained Robert Guillaume...and John Wesley returned.
