CELEBRATE LOVE UNDER THE STARS AT THE CASTLE Romance your love at a special Valentine’s Day concert -- a night of spellbinding and dreamy music played by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra at the Cape of Good Hope Castle. The concert is presented by Opulent Living, the lifestyle magazine that sets the bar. Joining the CPO will be a host of fabulous guest artists. The orchestra, which celebrates its 100th birthday this month, will be conducted by the starry-eyed Brandon Phillips, who has just announced his own engagement! On stage will also be Colin Lee, South Africa’s world-renowned tenor who last year had Cape Town fall in love with him in Lucia di Lammermoor with Pretty Yende. This is his only South African concert this year. Also on the bill is Selim Kagee, who will thrill with his vocal mastery of opera, classics and pop. Kagee signed with EMI in 2011. His debut album, Piango d’Amore (Cry for Love) is gut-wrenchingly sensational. Joining them will be Nash Reed, whose international reputation a ...

To say Brenda Mntambo is a vocal powerhouse is a big understatement. Her quivering voice gave me goosebumps the same way opera singer Pretty Yende does. If you know Mahalia Jackson or Maria Callas, you will understand.
To mark the twentieth anniversary of South Africa's constitutional democracy the National Arts Council is calling for public nominations to honour South African arts icons. I hope that this exercise goes beyond honouring another list of "old time legends" who are good at their craft but silent in defending our democracy. There are many other ways ways to honour those legends. I would like to see the public put forward names of a contemporary generation of artists who use the power of their work to resonate and uphold the values of our democracy (albeit sometimes flawed). I would like to see some of the following names being considered (and this doesn't necessarily mean that I like all their work. Rather, I like what they do with their work) Theatre: Mike van Graan, Brett Bailey, Lara Foot, Paul Grootboom Dance: Mamela Nyamza, Georgina Thomson, Gregory Maqoma, Vincent Mantsoe Visual Art: Zanele Muholi Music: Pretty Yende, Bongani Madodana-Breen, Samson Diamond, Sophia Welz There are still many other ...

Thanks for playing our 2014/15 Season Announcement trivia game everyone! Here are the answers to the questions: 1. Michael Jackson might not have had opera in mind when he wrote one of the singles from his Thriller album in 1982, but we think this soprano’s parents took a cue from the title when naming her. She’ll be back in the sixth opera of our coming season. [Pretty Yende] 2. She made a name for herself in LA with stellar appearances in Idomeneo, Pagliacci, and El Gato Montes. Now, this stunning artist (one of LA Opera’s favorite leading ladies) will return for an unprecedented seventh leading soprano role here at LA Opera. Who is she? [Verónica Villarroel] 3. He was introduced to Los Angeles as a butcher’s assistant with a love of peaches and lemonade. Who is this velvety voiced singer, returning for his third role (and his second title role) this autumn? [Liam Bonner] 4. In her three L.A. appearances to date, she has been divine in Donizetti, rousing in Rossini and glamorous in Gounod. (We ...

I went to the Metropolitan Opera last night and saw Le Comte Ory. I was DAZZLED by their soprano Pretty Yende. What phenomenal resonators she has. We will be hearing many more great things from her I'm sure.
What a delightful Rossini opera Le Comte Ory is! am glad that the Metropolitan Opera can stage these gorgeous revivals, and that there are artists like Juan Diego Flórez, Pretty Yende and Karine Deshayes with the talent and pluck to tackle the bel canto repertoire that would otherwise be languishing in music libraries. thanks to public broadcasting radio stations around the country for broadcasting live opera performances, both during their pledge periods and otherwise.

My instructions when I was appointed SA Ambassador to Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay in August 2009, were to improve the terms of trade, share the "South African Experience" in South America and "provide leadership to the Embassy." These indicators have all been met. With my excellent team at our Mission in Buenos Aires, we have since September 2009, the date of my arrival here: 1. Increased SA exports by 83% to Argentina in 2011, despite fierce protectionism in the Mercosur trading bloc (last year a record R 1,3bn of SA exports received here); 2. Facilitated significant flows of FDI to SA including a R100m investment in E Cape;the seven major SA investors here have also received continuous attention and assistance. 3. Arranged Twinning agreements for Provinces of KZN and W Cape with Santa Fe and Mendoza; 4. Hosted the "SA Festival in Argentina" in November 201o, which included FW De Klerk, Mac Maharaj, Springbok Legends, Mandela Photo Exhibition, Movie Festival and opera stars Pretty Yende and Given Nko ...
