Blatter shows 'support' for Suarez A reduced ban may likely pop up for under- fire Uruguay forward, Luis Suarez as FIFA President Sepp Blatter has stated that he wishes the Liverpool striker is back in action soonest. Suarez was handed a four-month and nine- international match ban for biting Italian defender Gorgio Chellini; a development that has generated varying reactions. However, it seems Blatter has been won over by Suarez decision to apologise for his act as he described the gesture as an act of fair play. "He said 'I'm sorry' to the soccer family, and that's fair play. That shows he's a great player and I hope he can have his soccer career back” The FIFA president was quoted as saying on ESPN. While Blatter’s comment looks to give hope to an early return for Suarez, the FIFA supremo has cautious not to join words with Uruguay President Jose Mujica who was so critical about the world football governing body. **Futball News** FIFA: Ballon d'Or U-turn favours Ronaldo's fortunes First he mocked him, then he praised him and now FIFA President Sepp Blatter has handed Cristiano Ronaldo his best chance of winning his second World Footballer of the Year award. For in an unexpected move, the world governing body extended the deadline for national team coaches and captains, as well as participating journalists, to vote for their top three players of 2013. The initial date had been last Friday, just hours after the first legs of the European play-offs had ended, but the closing date to vote for this year's Ballon d'Or winner is now November 29. The reason given for the delay has been the 'low turnout of votes' so far. With Lionel Messi, who has won the last four crowns, out injured, Ronaldo will never have a better chance to impress a panel for an award where form at voting time often counts as much as previous exploits in the year. UEFA chief Platini calls for 40 team World Cup (Reuters) - UEFA chief Michel Platini wants the World Cup finals expanded to 40 teams from 2018 to allow more African and Asian countries into the tournament without reducing the number of European nations represented. Europe currently provides 13 of the 32 teams at the finals, compared with five from Africa and four or five, depending on the winners of a playoff against a South American team, for the most populous continent Asia. FIFA President Sepp Blatter wrote last week that Africa and Asia deserved more representation at soccer's showpiece event because they had more member associations than Europe and South America. Former France international Platini, widely regarded as the most likely successor to Swiss Blatter in the FIFA job, said by his own calculations that adding eight more teams would require extending the tournament by only three days. "It's good for everybody," Platini told Britain's Times newspaper in an interview. "I totally agree with Mr Bl ...

TOP STORIES / SPORTS SOCCER FIFA Congress yields racism reform, transparency tiff FIFA's annual Congress has yielded a number of reforms, including new anti-racism rules and the election of the first woman to FIFA's executive. A call was also made for FIFA President Sepp Blatter to reveal his salary. At the end of FIFA's annual Congress - held this year in Port Louis, Mauritius - FIFA has drawn both praise for what it accomplished and criticism for what was left off the agenda. In his speech to the Congress on Friday, FIFA President Sepp Blatter (pictured above) lauded the changes that had been made in world soccer's governing body, after it set out two years ago on a mission to clean house and instigate reform. "I am happy to say that FIFA has weathered the storm. We have emerged from troubled waters," Blatter said. Initiatives to make FIFA more transparent have been high priorities for Blatter in recent years, and his comments reflected an apparent sense of achievement. The measures passed included a de ...
30 May 2013 GMT: 20:36 News Blatter promises more support for Palestinians in fight for football equality Published on Wednesday, 29 May 2013 18:56 By Andrew Warshaw in Mauritius May 30 - The head of the Palestinian football federation says the harsh treatment of his country's players and officials by Israel is showing no sign of receding despite the best efforts of FIFA President Sepp Blatter. The Middle East situation is high on the political agenda this week in Mauritius, where the FIFA Congress takes place, and Blatter made a point of mentioning the Palestinian issue when he addressed a meeting of the Asian Football Confederation today in the buildup to Friday's Congress. Blatter's personal intervention led to the release of Palestinian player Mahmoud Sarsak after he went on hunger strike in protest at being illegally detained by the Israeli authorities and the FIFA boss is determined to keep up the pressure on Israel. Sepp Blatter's salary a secret FIFA President Sepp Blatter's salary remained undisclosed Wednesday while the world soccer body backed its reform process and insisted it was more financially transparent. A day after FIFA said a debate over restricting the age and number of terms of officials would be put off until at least next year, the earnings of its leaders were also off limits. Domenico Scala, a Swiss industrialist brought in to be FIFA's top financial watchdog and lead its new audit and compliance committee, said he knew how much money Blatter made but would not reveal it the day before the congress meets for two days. "It is not my role to disclose it," Scala said at a beachside hotel on the Indian Ocean island. "The decision to disclose salaries is part of the process we have ... and part of the role of the FIFA executive committee. You will definitely not get the salary from me. FIFA President Sepp Blatter held out a hand of peace to English football today as both sides acclaimed a new spirit of conciliation and co-operation after a fractious period of disharmony and mistrust.
London - FIFA President Sepp Blatter once described English soccer as being "run by *** " according to Sebastian Coe. Coe, who headed the London Olympics, worked with Blatter as chairperson of FIFA's ethics committee before taking a role with England's failed bid to host the 2018 World Cup. Russia won the hosting rights after England's bid attracted only two votes following Blatter voicing concerns about English media intrusion into the FIFA executive committee. In his new autobiography, Coe claims that Blatter has "always had a problem" with English soccer. "From his perspective, it's not hard to understand," Coe writes in an extract published by The Times of London newspaper. "As president of an international federation, he sees the unwillingness of English clubs to release players for international duty. He sees the purchasing power of the English game - big-name clubs buying up players from all over the world. "And he sees a national federation that, at the time of the bid, had no chairman or chief ...

Blatter tells FIFA advisers to curb criticism. Criticized on all sides after a series of scandals, FIFA’s executive committee members should not be publicly targeted by the governing body’s anti-corruption advisers, President Sepp Blatter said Friday. Blatter said at a news conference that a reform drive was working and restoring FIFA’s credibility. He renewed FIFA’s call for world soccer to fight match-fixing and illegal betting, and added the body would seek to protect players who reported attempts to fix games. ‘‘We are not a corrupt, or a mafia organization,’’ he said. ‘‘It is always a question of perception and the question of reality. We are in a good mood and in a good moment, and I am sure that we will be able to succeed.’’ Blatter said he met the expert panel led by Mark Pieth on Thursday and corrected remarks the Swiss law professor made in Denmark last week.
