Mar 26 (Wed) 6:30 PM Give America a Raise National Bus Tour here in Berks -- Let's Rally! Outside of McDonald's in Wyomissing, Penn Ave near 8th Ave Americans agree. No one who works should live in poverty. Yet that’s exactly what’s happening to workers around the country earning the current minimum wage. While the federal minimum wage has stayed the same since 2009, the price of food, gas, utilities, and basic necessities has, with inflation, made it nearly impossible to live anywhere in America on $7.25 an hour or $15,000 a year. It’s long past time for Congress to give America a raise. And to help drive the point home, Americans United for Change is hitting the road with the “Give America a Raise” Minimum Wage Bus Tour supporting President Obama’s plan to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour, and raising the political stakes for Republicans in Congress who callously oppose it The National Bus Tour is coming to Wyomissing on Wednesday night Wednesday, March 26, 6:30 P . ...

In an effort to raise political pressure on Republicans, AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka is challenging Heritage Foundation president Jim DeMint to debate raising the $7.25-per-hour federal minimum wage. Trumka and the AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest labor federation, strongly support the Democratic plan to increase the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour. DeMint and Heritage, arguably the most prominent conservative think tank, disagree (in fact, while DeMint was serving in the Senate, he proposed an amendment that would have effectively abolished the federal minimum wage altogether).

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) today issued a proposed rule that would alleviate the delays, inefficiencies, abuse of process and unnecessary litigation that plague the current system for workers who want to vote on whether to have a union. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said:
AFSCME National/Politics Obama to Raise Minimum Wage Under Federal Contractors PETER BAKERJAN. 28, 2014 New York Times, President Obama plans to sign an executive order requiring that janitors, construction workers and others working for federal contractors be paid at least $10.10 an hour, using his own power to enact a more limited version of a policy that he has yet to push through Congress. The order, which Mr. Obama will highlight in his annual State of the Union address on Tuesday night, is meant to underscore an increasing willingness by the president to bypass Congress if lawmakers continue to resist his agenda, aides said. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka was the truth-teller at this year’s CERES Clean Energy Investor’s Summit. Trumka eloquently indicted climate crisis denials by recalling the traditional coal industry claims that mines laden with methane would not explode, inadequate timbers would not collapse, and coal dust would not clog miner’s lungs. Just so, he eloquently warned, the pretence that overloading the atmosphere with carbon pollution would not disrupt the climate would be overridden by the laws of physics. But he warned climate advocates that merely decrying the evils of fossil pollution was inadequate – the world needed a massive investment in clean energy substitutes and sustainable infrastructure so that ordinary citizens could both meet their energy needs and feed their families with energy options and jobs that healed, rather than damaged, the climate. This argument is, like the laws of physics, unassailable. We will not solve the climate crisis without climate solutions – solutions big e .. ...

Richard Trumka Says Shutting Down The Government To Prove A Point Is A Temper Tantrum Worthy Of A Four-Year-Old. By Jackie Tortora Sept. 30,2013 In AFL-CIO NOW blog A looming federal government shutdown is slated to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka released the following statement on the House Republicans' hostage taking: As of today, it is clear that the Republican Party and the Tea Party have become one and the same when it comes to federal fiscal policy. House Republicans have decided that they will shut down critical public services, stiff public servants, hold America’s credit rating hostage and kill off jobs because they are upset that President Obama decisively defeated Mitt Romney last November. That some Republicans are participating in this fiasco against their better judgment does not obscure their responsibility. All responsible voices must speak and act against policy making by hostage taking. It’s bad enough that Republicans’ intellectually dishonest ...
The Obama administration won't give in to organized labor's demand that it bend the health care reform law to protect some union member's health insurance plans, the White House said Friday. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka and other unions were informed of "President Barack Obama's decision that the unions aren't getting what they want" during a meeting at the White House about the Affordable Care Act on Friday afternoon. The Treasury laid out its rationale in a letter to Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.), who previously wrote to Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew to express opposition to granting the unions' demand. The Washington Post first reported on the Obama administration's decision Friday. The dispute over the impact of the 2010 health care reform law on some union health plans has caused a rift between the AFL-CIO and the White House. The labor union approved a resolution at its national meeting Wednesday calling for significant changes to the law -- and threatening to support its ...

Part of the text from My NEA Morningupdate dated Nov. 14, 2012... In a story largely overshadowed by the Petraeus scandal, President Obama met with labor leaders and liberal groups yesterday to discuss the upcoming "fiscal cliff" negotiations. The issue was noted in just one network segment last night, though major print outlets and cable news shows covered the meetings. NBC Nightly News (11/13, story 4, 1:15, O'Donnell), after surveying the latest developments in the Petraeus scandal, called it "a distraction overshadowing" the fiscal cliff, which "would otherwise be the big story in Washington right now." Meanwhile, several media outlets report on the beginning of White House meetings on the issue. USA Today (11/13, Madhani) reports that President Obama hosted "labor leaders including AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka; Mary Kay Henry, president of the Service Employees International Union; Lee Saunders of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; and Dennis Van Roekel, president o ...

"The numbers that matter to all workers – falling wages, rising health care costs, home foreclosures, the loss of manufacturing jobs and disappearing retirement benefits – are linked to union membership numbers. Collective action through unions remains the single best way for working people to effect change….What will define the labor movement of the future, however, is not assaults or the changing economy, but how working people come together to respond to them. We enter 2013 with our eyes open and understand that these challenges offer real opportunities for working people to reshape the future. Working families are building community alliances, engaging with young workers and immigrants, fighting right-wing politicians and organizing in innovative, new ways. From taxi workers to Walmart workers to port workers to freelance writers, working Americans are committed to building a new movement for the future and to creating good jobs and an economy that works for all." -President Richard Trumka on th ...

BANKERS, NOT BAKERS, KILLED HOSTESS! Over the last decade Hostess has been mismanaged by bankers, not bakers. Private equity firms “Bainstyle vulture capitalists,” as AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka explained in an article for the Daily Kos, “invested in Hostess to profit not by making quality products, but by bleeding the company of every dollar before discarding it.” The company has filed for bankruptcy twice in the last 10 years, forcing contract concessions from the nearly 15,000 unionized employees. Hostess has had six different CEOs since 2004. With the current CEO, Gregory Rayburn, receiving a 300 percent increase in compensation. The management firm raised the pay of the top nine executives between 35 to 80 percent all while asking employees to take cuts of more than 30 percent. In addition, executives overseeing liquidation of the company will receive 1.75 million in bonuses. The company also stopped paying into the Multi Employer Pension Plan (MEPP)— which is reportedly underfunded by ...

Union says Romney ad uses exploited OH coal miners Sept. 19, 2012, 10:44 a.m. EDT AP COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A national union leader says Ohio coal miners pictured in a new ad from the Mitt Romney campaign are those who were required to appear at the Republican presidential nominee's coal-country rally, missing a day's pay. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on Wednesday echoed earlier concern after footage from the August event at the Century Mine in Beallsville in southeastern Ohio was included in Romney's ad. The ad criticizes President Barack Obama for imposing environmental regulations that have hurt coal production and for a statement in 2008 that new coal-fired power plants would go bankrupt as a result of fees he supported for greenhouse gas emissions. Romney's campaign didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The union sought an investigation last month into the plant being shuttered for the rally Would you give up a day’s pay to see Mitt Romney in the flesh? Workers at one Ohio coal ...
