President stands firm after referendum Park stays committed to safety system reform and ending corruption President Park Geun-hye has reaffirmed her determination to reform the national safety system and corruption-ridden public sector after the opposition’s narrow victory in local elections. “Without resolving deep-rooted, pervasive practices in our society, it would be difficult for us to not only secure public safety, but also realize happiness of people and economic revitalization,” she said yesterday in a Memorial Day address at the National Cemetery in Seoul. “The government will definitely fix the abnormal practices to create a safe nation, a new Republic of Korea.” In the aftermath of the tragic sinking of the Sewol ferry, Park again vowed to eliminate the perennial problem of collusion between the government and business sector that she believes was responsible for lax safety management and the failed, late attempts to rescue passengers trapped in the sunken ferry. “The government wil ...

Prayers folks. Hundreds Missing After Ferry Capsizes, Sinks off South Korea Top news: Nearly 300 people, most of them high school students, are missing after a ferry en route to the resort island of Jeju sank off the southwestern coast of South Korea. At least three people are confirmed to have died. The ship listed sharply and capsized after what survivors described as a loud bang. Its passengers included more than 300 students on a field trip from a high school outside Seoul. A frantic search and rescue operation is underway as desperate parents have gathered at their children's school awaiting answers as to their children's fate. Some 160 navy and coast guard divers are searching the wreckage, though Korean officials have cautioned that their efforts have been hampered by strong currents and poor visibility. "We must not give up," President Park Geun-hye said. "We must do our best to rescue even one of those passengers and students who may not have escaped from the ship"

BREAKING NEWS: S. Korea spy chief pressured to step down over alleged fabrication of evidence South Korea's spy agency chief came under growing pressure to step down Wednesday over a scandal involving the fabrication of evidence in an espionage case, AFP said. Lawmakers from President Park Geun-hye’s ruling Saenuri Party called for NIS Director Nam Jae-joon to resign. The National Intelligence Service (NIS) has been accused of forging documents to build a spying case against a former Seoul City official who escaped to South Korea from North Korea in 2004. The documents included Chinese border control records. Last week, an NIS informant linked to the forgeries attempted to commit suicide. Editorial Notes: In Nigeria, the police, the EFCC, the SSS, even the prosecutors fabricate evidence to implicate people and people go to jail for that, and nothing ever happens.
Abnormal vs. normal By Cho Jae-hyon What is it that separates the abnormal from the normal? Can we tell the difference between the two in absolute terms? What is normal or not will depend on which norms and standards we use. The norms are different for each society and vary as time goes by. The distinction between the abnormal and normal is blurry at best. President Park Geun-hye, entering her second year in office, has been pushing hard a campaign to “normalize the abnormal” in society. She is seemingly determined to wipe out all that she thinks is not normal. She has expressed concerns about abnormalities prevalent in the economic and social sectors. But what is it that is abnormal in our society? She has several abnormalities in mind she wants to root out. In her Jan. 6 press conference, she cited the strike by railway workers last month as a typically abnormal practice. She pledged not to tolerate or compromise with those who rely on such abnormal practices. Asked about the criticism that her lack ...
Horrible histories By John Burton There are a series of books published in the U.K. called Horrible Histories that detail gruesome events from the past, with such titles as Angry Aztecs and Vicious Vikings, to amuse schoolboys. It’s proof of the old adage that tragedy plus time equals comedy. Most periods of history are viewed dispassionately if they are not subject to near total public apathy. Few Europeans nowadays are concerned about the appalling devastation of the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), which killed an estimated 8 million people. Koreans do not protest against China about the Manchu invasions of Korea in 1627 and 1637. It’s history. But other periods of history attract abnormal attention, dominate the public consciousness and are no laughing matter. These tend to be recent traumatic events such as military defeats, civil conflict or political oppression that are within the living memory of at least some of the population. The resulting feelings of loss, humiliation or injustice promote a . ...

By Pakkor Park's security aide bungles key issues What’s wrong with Kim Chang-soo, the top security officer for President Park Geun-hye? The former defense minister acts sheepishly, contrary to his reputation as a strong-willed soldier, and obviously fails to stand up for the national interest as forcefully as the occasion calls for. In a meeting with his counterpart Susan Rice in Washington last week, Cheong Wa Dae National Security Office chief Kim virtually acknowledged Japan’s bid to secure the right to send its forces beyond its territory. According to Cheong Wa Dae officials, Kim made clear the country’s opposition to Japan’s military dispatch to the Korean Peninsula based on the right to exercise collective self-defense. “Collective self-defense is a right guaranteed under the United Nations Charter. But if Japan’s defense ties with the U.S. are revised to influence Korea’s sovereign right, our approval is necessary. We made that clear to the U.S.,” a Cheong Wa Dae official said. Br ...
With North Korean Nukes, More May Be Better The Diplomat, 3 Oct 13 Zachary Keck As noted on Flashpoints today, South Korea held its largest Armed Forces Day ceremony in a decade this week, parading around some “11,000 troops, 190 weapons systems and other equipment and 120 aircraft.” Among the impressive display was South Korea’s new long-range cruise missile, the Hyunmu-3, which has a range of 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). In other words, it can reach all of North Korea. This was clearly intended to send a message to Pyongyang. Not wanting to leave anything to chance, however, ROK President Park Geun-hye gave a speech at the ceremony hammering the point home to the North. In the speech, Park said that, “against the backdrop” of North Korea’s budding nuclear arsenal, “it is imperative that the South builds a strong deterrent against the North until it abandons the nuclear programs.” She followed this up by saying: “By quickly securing abilities to counter nuclear arms and other weapons o ...
ROK President Park Geun-hye put on a show for visiting US Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. She said ROK must bolster its military capabilities in order to neutralize the North Korean nuclear threat and thus ensure peace. Once again, she did not mention the most direct road to peace and denuclearization - a peace treaty. (Not as impressive as DPRK's military parades. But then one feels for the goose steppers.)

President Park Chul, Chairman Chang Dae Hwan, Chairman Ahn Hong Joon, Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,   I am greatly honored to speak on the Eurasian policy of the Park Geun-hye Government before such a distinguished audience as is present here today. I would like to thank Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and Maekyung Media Group for jointly organizing this timely and meaningful conference.   (Eurasian Policy of Park Geun-hye Government)   “I dream of a railway running from Busan to Europe via Russia.” This is what President Park Geun-hye said at the summit meeting with President Putin in St. Petersburg last week. At first, it may sound like President Park was expressing her strong desire to connect the Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR) and the Trans-Korean Railway (TKR). But I believe that with these words, she was trying to capture her larger vision of Korea’s policy towards Eurasia.   President Park’s Eurasian policy is a grand plan to connect the two economies in ...

amene sitinawelenge news. news24 Cyber spies embarrass South Korea Published: 2013/05/13 02:41:06 PM Source: AP A scandal has engulfed South Korea's spy agency. (Duncan Alfreds, News24) Seoul - The scandal shaking up South Korea's main spy agency is not cloak-and-dagger stuff, but the kind of low-grade trickery anyone with an internet connection could pull off. And the target was not Seoul's opaque rival to the north, but the country's own people. Internet postings ostensibly from ordinary South Koreans, but actually from National Intelligence Service agents, allegedly boosted President Park Geun-hye while she was running for the job as the ruling party's nominee. She was reportedly dubbed "the best", while her opponent, in a play on his name, was called "criminal". A police investigation conducted before the December election found no wrongdoing, but now police say at least two agents violated the law and the original investigation is itself being examined. Dozens of internet comments, or more, may not h ...

[tbs 정오뉴스] ▶(Report) N. Korea Warns Against Joint Military Drill North Korea has warned that it has directed its troops to strike back immediately, in case even a single shell from the joint South Korea-U.S. anti-submarine drills falls in its territorial waters. According to the North's central news agency, Pyongyang has threatened that if Seoul or Washington reacts recklessly to the North's defense strikes, prompt actions will be taken, to turn the five islands in the Yellow Sea into flames. Meanwhile, speaking at an interview with the American news network CBS, President Park Geun-hye warned that North Korea will pay if Pyongyang launches any attack similar to the Cheonan warship sinking or Yeongpyeong Island shelling. Park also called for an end to rewarding North Korea with negotiations and assistance, and stated that Kim Jong-un's regime must change in order to survive and develop. 2-16-2013 Doing a Reagan on North Korea Have we waged the wrong war against North Korea? Then, can our new President Park Geun-hye redirect our strategy and finish that feral beast once and for all? These are complicated questions but the ghost of one “complicated simple” man may beg to answer from his grave: Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States who is credited with giving the Soviet Union a final push toward the brink of collapse during his 1981-1989 reign. We have done virtually everything possible to deal with North Korea, which has brought itself closer to becoming a nuclear state with its recent third underground test. For 10 years under Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun, we employed the “sunshine policy” of engaging the North in the hope of leading it to an “in-stage,” assisted death. It didn’t. President Lee Myung-bak has applied a rule of reciprocity in dealing with the North. But this has obviously not worked. We may as well feel we have run out of options b ...
