I've seen all over TNA blog posts a twisted spin of what Raila Odinga meant by 'Ukiona mwenzako kichwa chake chanyolewa, tia yako maji'. Raila Odinga is Kenya's leader of Official Opposition. The world over, Opposition in any democratic society is christened as a 'government-in-waiting', probably ready to take politucal power after the next (normally constitutionally predictable) electoral cycle. Raila Odinga has used hundreds of vitendawilis* and semis* over the years and non other than DP Bill Ruto can be number one to attest to this (he normally fondly refers to Odinga as 'yule jamaa wa vitendawili'). For the avoidance of doubt, what Mr. Odinga meant was that just as President Joyce Banda was being 'shaved' by then Opposition leader in Malawi, (now President) Peter Mutharika, the same case can easily apply here in Kenya in the next elections if the current leadership does not reach the performance benchmarks expected by Kenyans, guaranteed in the Constitution and promised by themselves during campaig . ...
New president of Malawi taught at Washington University law school for nearly 40 years For nearly 40 years Peter Mutharika, the new president of the African country of Malawi, built a seemingly typical career as a respected law scholar at Washington University. Mutharika, one of the law school’s first black professors, taught courses in contract law and advanced ones on international commercial law. He wrote books. He sent his three children to private schools in Ladue and sat on one of the school’s boards. He lived in University City and later in Creve Coeur and then retired after receiving a distinguished teaching chair. Yet unknown to many of his colleagues and students, Mutharika spent his years in academia also biding his time and quietly working behind the scenes to influence the future of his native African country more than 8,600 miles away. Just how influential was he? On Saturday, Mutharika, now 74, a soft-spoken professor with a proper English-educated accent and who smoked a pipe while he ...

JOYCE BANDA FACES ARREST After former Malawian President Joyce Banda has indicated that she will not quit politics as she will be leading People’s Party (PP) in rebuilding process for 2019 elections, the government is rolling its wheels that she should face an arrest for alleged offenses signalled by the new President Peter Mutharika. Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) boss Justice Renzine Mzikamanda is increasingly under pressure from the Executive to have Banda indicted or he will be replaced by Mutharika’s loyalist. Nyasa Times understands that ACB has not collected objective material evidence linking Banda to prosecuteable offence other than mere unsubstantiated allegations. The development has forced government to assign Nicholas Dausi the new Director General of National Intelligence Bureau to fetch for “any substantive material” that would link Banda to law breaking. “Joyce Banda needs to be shaken a bit with an arrest,” Dausi is said to have been instructed by the powers-that-be. Seven days ...

Leadership, or the lack of responsible political leadership, is sub-Saharan Africa’s major challenge. This common wisdom was confirmed Monday when the Ibrahim Foundation’s prize committee refused for the second year running and the fourth time in seven years to find any recently retired African head of state or head of government from any of Africa’s 55 countries worthy of receiving the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership (worth $5-million over ten years, plus another $200,000 a year for life). President Joaquin Chissano of Mozambique received the prize in 2007, the first year of its existence; President Festus Mogae of Botswana, who had just left his post, was awarded it the next year, and Pedro de Verona Pires of tiny Cape Verde in 2011. Since then the Ibrahim Foundation has found no recently retired former president to have been sufficiently effective while in office as a promoter of good governance to be awarded the prize. The prize is given to an African political leader who ...

Saturday, 03 December 2011 06:00 Zomba Nsondole Member of Parliament (MP) Jennifer Chirunga on Saturday announced her defection from the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of President Bingu wa Mutharika and that she had joined the People’s Party (PP) of State Vice President Joyce Banda. The moment you start arresting people for political reasons including former president Joyce Banda you will be offtrack and you will give away all the trust you have right now from the general public. When former President Joyce Banda took office in 2012,she told the nation that she found our coffers dry as DPP had siphoned all the money from the consolidated account prefferably account number 1 by others. Bearing in mind that she has left the Presidential office, for the sake of transparency and accountability as a President who sacrificed her life and office to fight corruption which resulted in exposing cash gate. For the interest of us malawians as i already said, the former President must consider telling the nation of Malawi how much she has left in the coffers and the newly elected President,His Excellency Proffesor Arthur Peter Mutharika should also declare to the nation how much he has found in our coffers. Its high time our leaders must be accountable and transparent to us the people we usher them into power. Greetings from Magede Si Wandale-Afrobarometer. They are surprised and confused.
Malawi's electoral authorities say they will reopen ballot boxes after finding evidence of irregularities. The recount could start this week after an implementation plan was thrashed out on Sunday with political parties. On Saturday, Malawi's President Joyce Banda declared the election "null and void", claiming there were "serious irregularities". She issued a decree that vote counting should stop and called for fresh elections in 90 days. But just hours after her announcement, Malawi's high court issued an injunction preventing the president from annulling the poll, and directing that vote tallying continues.
Presidential "Slip of the Tongue"- Madam Midday One As I finally depart from the beautiful African soils to Europe, after my brief Johannesburg stop over, political drama continues to unfold in Malawi. 2 hours is a longtime in life. When I departed Lilongwe yesterday, Rev Dr. Chakwera had a narrow lead and, by the time I landed in Johannesburg, Prof Peter Muthalika had regained the lead. It all points to a APM win, based on the unofficial results from constituencies. There is indication of anomalies, for example, one result in Ntchisi shows a possible doctored result with MCP results not registered. Looks weird and raises suspicions. The question is the extent of such anomalies and whether they do affect the overall results. That is a matter for MEC to resolve. Today 24 May, I woke up to a shocker as President Joyce Banda nullified the elections using Section 88 (2) of the Constitution which says: "The President shall provide executive leadership in the interest of national unity in accordance with this . ...
Attempts by interim President Joyce Banda and her Peoples Party( PP) to remain in power through crook continues to hit a blank wall as the D day May 20 draw closer Malawi Voice has established. The latest formula to rig the elections was laid bare on Wednesday at around 10 o’clock in Mchesi in Lilongwe when Cassim Mkwinda,37 who hails from Traditional Authority(T/ A) Katuli in Mangochi was caught red handed busy registering and issuing Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) voter registration cards in one of the houses. Mkwinda is one of the eight people that were trained in a Training of Trainers which Malawi’s Ambassador to Japan Brigadier Reuben Ngwenya conducted two weeks ago in Lilongwe. His arrest follows a water tight opposition intelligence system that has been following events surrounding Joyce Banda’s plans to rig the election. After sniffing crime, a member of the opposition tipped former army senior official Brigadier name withheld that Mkwinda was busy in one of the houses taking peoples pho ...

Africa knows no more peaceful people than the humble people of Malawi. When defeated in elections, Malawians concede graciously and hand over power peacefully. Look at Kenneth Kaunda, and then look at Rupiah Banda. These are very peaceful and gracious Malawians. President Joyce Banda should not spoil for us the great legacy that Malawians have bequeathed to the African continent. JB's character belongs to other nationalities I cannot mention here. During this very difficult time, we appeal to Amai Joyce Banda not to pull a Mugabe on us.
BREAKING NEWS: PERSONAL SECURITY AROUND PRESIDENT JOYCE BANDA TIGHTENED State House sources indicate that the Personal Security of President Dr. Joyce Banda, has been beefed-up with new orders and security procedures being implemented. This was after State House received news of the death of former Deputy Minister Godfrey Kamanya. The new security arrangement was agreed at a meeting Retired Chief Justice Richard Banda held with Major R. Namwera. President Joyce Banda's Aide De Camp (ADC). Apparently, the first Gentleman is worried that the President, is so distraught after preliminary results indicate that she is losing the election and news of Godfrey Kamanya's suicide has worsened the situation. The President has been crying since morning. Special message from Khumbo Kachali out-going State Vice-President: Friends, I would like to like to wish you a happy Wednesday. I must state that am very happy and proud of the choice I made for myself and my followers on the Presidential Candidate to support. I would like to thank the people of Mzimba North for their continued trust in my leadership. I would also like to thank the majority of Malawians who listened to my humble plea, to usher out of Government, a clueless administration of President Joyce Banda, who I repeatedly said lacked the necessary vision and strategic direction to change this country. I say this with confidence because I am 100% sure that whatever happens in this election, the blind PP with its frivolous leadership is losing. I urge all Malawians to keep their peace as we wait for the final official results and usher in a new and clean administration. God bless you all.
Unofficial results now indicate President Joyce Banda has been pushed into third place with 16% of the vote. The DPP's Peter Mutharika leads with 32%. These results can have huge ramifications on Zambia's diplomatic relations with Malawi. In 2007, then opposition PF leader Micheal Sata was declared a Prohibited Immigrant by President Bingu Wa Mutharika & deported from the country. And now his brother is about to become President!

Malawians eager to vote in unpredictable elections Malawi's unpredictable general elections are sparking widespread interest even in rural villages, where flags with colours of the different parties hang on rooftops or from trees, while campaign vehicles pass through blaring election propaganda. Voters are to cast their ballots Tuesday in the tightly contested presidential, parliamentary and regional polls, with President Joyce Banda facing three strong candidates. About 7.5 million people - more than 90 per cent of eligible voters -have registered. "Before Cashgate, Banda would have taken a clean victory," political analyst and journalist Wisdom Nelson Chimgwede says. But then came the affair in which civil servants, politicians and entrepreneurs were found to have pocketed at least 25 million dollars in government funds. "That gave the opposition something to campaign on," says Chimgwede, who sees the main political parties in the southern African country as being built around personalities rather than ...
Features Malawi readies for four-way presidential race Incumbent Joyce Banda has a narrow lead, but anything is possible in Malawi's May 20 elections. Lameck Masina Last updated: 22 Apr 2014 12:04 Listen to this page using ReadSpeaker Email Article Print Article Share article Send Feedback President Joyce Banda is still a strong contender despite the 'Cashgate' scandal [AFP/Getty Images] Blantyre, Malawi - With just a few weeks left before the presidential elections scheduled for May 20, Malawi is in a political frenzy. Twelve presidential candidates are frantically roving this southern African country to convince its 7.5 million registered voters to pick them. But just four candidates seem to have a shot at winning: Lazarus Chakwera of the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Atupele Muluzi of United Democratic Front (UDF), Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and President Joyce Banda of the People's Party (PP), who has led Malawi since the death of former President Bingu Wa Muth ...
10 things you should know about Malawi’s upcoming elections In less than five days, millions of Malawians will vote in the country’s first tripartite elections to select their president, members of parliament and local government councilors. The May 20, 2014 elections are Malawi’s fifth since transitioning to multiparty democracy in 1994. 1. A record 12 candidates are competing in the presidential election. 2. The field is open, particularly because Malawi has a first-past-the-post electoral system, meaning a presidential candidate needs only to win a plurality of the vote to be elected. 3. This year’s elections are overshadowed by a major corruption scandal, known in Malawi as Cashgate. Cashgate refers to the siphoning of government funds through fraudulent payments and loopholes via Malawi’s Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) payment platform. President Joyce Banda seems to have suffered the greatest political costs of the scandal, with recent street protests about Cash ...
Khumbo Kachali Resigns from Peoples Party By Innocett Mawaya Malawi's Vice President Khumbo Kachali has resigned from the 'governing' People's Party and has since joined the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). He bade farewell to President Joyce Banda on Tuesday night during which the President reacted, "I knew you would resign, I heard already that you are joining the Malawi Congress Party." Sentiment to which Right Honourable Khumbo Kachale replied, "Your Excellency, I have resigned from the PP, as to where I am heading to, it's none of your concern." Malawi's 2014 Elections getting interesting.
''JOYCE BANDA TO BE ARRESTED WITHIN 100 DAYS OF OFFICE IF HER HANDS ARE INVOLVED IN CASHGATE''-UDF President Joyce Banda should pray that she should not have her hands involved in the Cashgate scandal or if they have already been involved then she should never see the day that the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) with its leader Atupele Muluzi ascending to power. According to the UDF leader, the UDF party under his leadership will involve international and independent auditors who will do their own forensic audit of the Capital Hill accounts and then within the first hundred days of office they will have the cases in courts with other culprits arrested. Muluzi said this at a debate at the Victoria hotel on what they plan to do with those who loot (ed) public coffers. Cashgate scandal that started under the government of Banda has seen some attributing it to President Banda with allegations swirling that even Banda herself is involved in the scandal together with her family.

Expectations are high among Malawians that the presidential debate set for this evening in Lilongwe will be an improvement from last week’s show. Some Political analysts and the public faulted last week’s debate that it was more of a Question and Answer session than an actual debate. During the event, presidential candidates are expected to give solutions to various challenges facing the nation. Four of the twelve presidential candidates chickened out last week and they included President Joyce Banda of the Peoples Party, leader of the Democratic Progressive Party Peter Mutharika, Davis Katsonga of Chipani cha Pfuko and Tisintha alliances’ George Mnensa. The leadership of the PP had earlier communicated that their candidate will not attend any of the debates which the Public described as a missed opportunity for the aspirant. In an earlier interview with Capital Fm her Presidential Press secretary Steve Nhlane, said President Joyce Banda will never attend such debates. “The reason why the presiden ...

BLANTYRE (MaraPost)--Opposition Democratic Progressive Party President Peter Mutharika has become second Presidential candidate after President Joyce Banda to announce that they will not participate in tonight's (Tuesday, April 22) Presidential debate. The DPP leader has pulled out due to the organisers' failure to provide Mutharika with debate's questions in time, according Ben Phiri, DPP leader's special aide. "The organisers forwarded the questions to Mutharika last sunday, two days before the debate. How can you ably participate in that scenario? "We need ample time to prepare. They should have given us the questions some two weeks ago. "The Mangochi Islamic Movement is concerned by the tendency of some political parties, particularly the People’s Party, who are taking Muslim women dressed in Islamic attire (hijab) to dance at political rallies using songs and other Islamic holy words such as Taqbeer( proclaiming greatness of Allah),” Kassim Kasinde, Secretary of Mangochi Islamic Movement, told Naysa Times on Tuesday, April 15. Kasinde’s angry comments followed a new phenomenon in election rallies for President Joyce Banda in which Muslim women donning Islamic headscarf, or hijab, were used as dancers.
Muslims march, petition DC over women dancers at political rallies: Muslims in Mangochi on Friday marched and presented a petition to THE district commissioner (DC), demanding an immediate stop to the use of Muslim women as dancers at political rallies. Muslim women have been dancing at rallies conducted by President Joyce Banda, an issue that has earned the anger of some Muslims who argue that the practice is violating the tenets of Islam. In the petition, the concerned Muslims, operating under the banner of Mangochi Islamic Movement, are also pushing for the resignation of Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) chairperson Sheikh Idrissa Muhammad who they accuse of taking advantage of the position to advance his personal agenda. Presenting the petition, secretary of the concerned Muslims, KassimKasinde, said Islam is a peaceful religion whose teachings need to be respected. Kasinde cited the dress code for women as one of the core principles of Islam that should not be tampered with. “The Mangochi Islamic ...

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) leadership has organized workshops to sensitize broadcasters on the need to exercise caution during the campaign period ahead of the May 20 polls. The development follows claims by President Joyce Banda that some radio stations are promoting hate speech in the run up to the general elections. Speaking to Capital FM, MACRA Communication Manager, Clara Mulonya said such meeting help radio stations’ owners to fully understand how they are supposed to adhere to their broadcasting license terms and conditions during the general elections. Apart from the meetings, Mulonya further said they also send periodic reports to such stations and advise them to avoid such conduct or face stern action. Meanwhile, the Media Council of Malawi leadership is also scheduled to meet managers of various radio stations to map the way forward on the issue.

President Joyce Banda says unresolved issues surrounding the Capital Hill cash gate will further delay the last meeting of parliament before the house is dissolved this March. The president confirmed at a press conference in Lilongwe today that representatives of a UK firm that audited state finances following the cashgate will return to Malawi next week. Among the key outstanding issues is the demand by the public to know the names of suspects involved in the looting of billions of kwacha at Capitol Hill. The president also said she would like to know the names of the suspects, much as the auditors say making public such details would compromise investigations. The president also talked about the sale of the presidential jet, saying treasury will soon make public how the proceeds were used. On the malfunctioning of cold rooms at Kamuzu Central Hospital, the president said it was due to negligence by management, and the minister of health warned 'those responsible will be dealt with'.

Fellow Gondwes & friends, lets please pray for Mr Chancy Gondwe, that God will completely heal him. He was severely beaten by thugs who raided his home in what appears to be politically motivated over some lawsuits he handled. May God restore him to full health. Please read the story below, from Nyasa Times. - Nyasa Times: Lawyer Chancy Gondwe Attacked: One of the country’s rising law practitioners, Chancy Gondwe was on Friday night attacked and injured by unknown thugs three days after winning a case against President Joyce Banda and her family. Gondwe met his fate at his home in BCA in Limbe when 20 thugs armed with clubs and panga knives broke into his compound at around 10pm. According to his wife, the assailants only attacked Gondwe out of four people who were in the house before stealing some household items and official vehicle Toyota Hilux SA 722. “They broke through the main gate and forced their way into the house baying for his life. But he managed to escape through the back door before the ...
President Joyce Banda wound up her northern region campaign trail, where political commentators say were aimed at gaining support from about 1.2 million registered voters. Her political presence in the north comes just a few weeks after she picked Sosten Gwengwe as her running mate at the expense of Vice President Khumbo Kachali. Her decision attracted widespread reactions and comments as others said this would have disappointed voters from the region. Others have commended President Banda for picking the youthful Gwengwe as this could appeal to the youths of the country. And in what would be termed as her decision to win back support from the north, Banda has for the past five days been holding political meetings which are dubbed development rallies. During the meeting, political leaders have been speaking in support of her pick for Gwengwe as the suitable running mate. Traditional leaders have also been speaking in support of Banda and parried away fears that the region is against her decision to dump K ...
Reports of high level corruption have halted work that was to improve the Chileka International Airport. Work on the airport was started two years ago and the Ministry of Transport had by then spent almost 410 Million Kwacha on the project. It had been estimated that the entire project would cost about 11.2 Billion Kwacha. A visit by Capital FM reporters revealed that the repair works have since been halted due to what some officers attributed to mismanagement of appropriation of funds. In a related development, President Joyce Banda also announced recently plans to construct a whole new international airport at Chileka. Meanwhile, members of the public have expressed dissatisfaction with the rehabilitation works being carried out by the government at the Airport, which they say is far from impressive.
I hate so many things in this life. But amongst the chief ones is to have my intellectual competence questioned, especially in public. The issue of President Joyce Banda resigning for reason of her vying for the presidency gave me little to think about. One like me, with no academic excellence in law, need not to struggle in interpreting Section 80 (7) of the Constitution. I could just recall that such things never happened to Bakili Muluzi and the late Bingu wa Mutharika when they were vying for the presidency. But then we have those who profess to us that they are well-versed in legal issues, like Billy Mayaya and Habiba Osman. These two did all they could to make us believe the President should have resigned before presenting her papers to Malawi Electoral Commission. Where on earth did they get all that? Sikono yake inakula bwanji analandirayo? Mpaka ma press conference pa zinthu za zii, kumangoziyalutsa ku mtundu wa Malawi. I’ve lost trust in them, and never will it be reversed. A Debate on Conflict with the Constitution; demanding President Joyce Banda to be disqualified and her nomination papers rejected by Malawi Electoral Common MEC for not resigning from her position before giving her nomination paper". This has been revealed in a press briefing held in Lilongwe where Seven Civil Society Activists Lucky Mbewe, Habiba Osman, Phili Kamangira, Leon Matanda, Mabvuto Bamusi and Billy Mayaya have said this is a debate which is a Call for a level play field to all political parties so that this years elections be of free and fair. In the statement the group says Banda was supposed to comply to Section 80 subsection 7 (e) that led to Sostain Gwengwe, Peter Mutharika and Atupele Muluzi resigning from their post as members of Parliament in their constituencies. The group has said the sitting president has a lot of advantages during election camp ...

Another loss. The ruling People’s Party (PP) continue to count in losses as its two senior members, Publicity Secretary, Hophmally Makande and vice-president, Khumbo Kachali decided to contest on independent Parliamentary tickets. The development comes amidst news of the appointment of Minister of Trade, Sosten Gwengwe as running-mate to President Joyce Banda, which caught most of the senior members off-guard. Makande confirmed to Nyasa Times in an exclusive interview that he has filed his nomination papers to contest as independent candidate for Mangochi-MonkeBay constituency. However, Makande who lost primary elections to Minister Ralph Jooma earlier this year, was quick to point out that his decision does not mean he is out of the ruling party.
MALAWIANS FEAR NIKUV WILL RIG THEIR ELECTION AS CONTROVESIAL COMPANY IS HIRED BY GVT MALAWIANS will troop to the polls on May 20 amid fears the elections will be rigged in favour of incumbent President Joyce Banda whose ruling People’s Party (PP) is accused of siphoning state funds from the national purse to bankroll the party’s election campaign. Current developments in Malawi confirm the electoral shenanigans exposed by the Zimbabwe Independent last year in which Banda hired expertise from the Zimbabwean government, accused of rigging last year’s July 31 elections, for assistance with the forthcoming crucial polls. Chaos is brewing as opposition political parties in Malawi are questioning the teaming up of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) with the country’s electoral body, alleging it is a conspiracy to rig the May 20 polls in favour of Banda. Last year this paper reported Banda had roped in her new close ally President Robert Mugabe’s government and shadowy Israeli security company Nik ...
NKHANI ZA UKU NDI UKU Government of Malawi through the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) Chief, Joseph Aironi, has delivered a Secret Dossier on Khumbo Kachali at his residence in Area12. This has been done in anticipation of a STORM that may result from Khumbo Kachali's actions after being snubbed on the position of PP running-mate. The Dossier contains names of individuals, owners of companies who are willing and have accepted to testify in court on Khumba Kachali's involvement in the cash-gate crime and how they used to transfer money to the VP. Chief amongst the revelations are names of Officers at Registrar General's Office, times and processes that were used to change ownership of CROSS MARKETING Ltd COMPANY, to exclude Khumbo Kachali's name as its owner. More painful to Khumbo Kachali is the fact that the Loga brothers, who are Khumbo Kachali's close business associates, have also accepted to testify in court if Khumbo Kachali 'MISBEHAVES' against President Joyce Banda.

Malawians push for speedy Cashgate trials The largest financial scandal to hit Malawi has rocked domestic and international confidence. Malawi's President Joyce Banda is coming under fire over her government's handling of the scandal [EPA] Blantyre, Malawi - With more than $250m siphoned off from government coffers, citizens here want officials to speed up the prosecutorial process in what has become the country's biggest financial scandal. The corruption affair - known as "Cashgate" - is believed to be rooted among the highest echelons of Malawi's government, and has led to some $150m being withheld by donors under the Common Approach to Budgetary Support (CABS) scheme. This has come as a significant blow to the country, as 40 percent of its national budget comes from donor aid. Financial aid for Malawi faces uncertainty Sara Sanyahumbi, a former deputy chairperson for CABS, told reporters that the donation freeze is caused by a lack of confidence in the government's financial management. It’s only Mrs. Joyce Banda who is well set to continue leading this country to greater heights in the May 2014 polls. President Joyce Banda has strengthened the torn relations this country had in the previous regimes. Take the food distribution issue. Mrs. Banda also understands that true empowerment should not only be theoretical, but also practical. How do you meaningfully empower hungry men and women without first and foremost giving them food as a starting point? President Dr. Joyce Banda recognized this and that is why the locals and all informed citizens are grateful to the Presidents for the food aid she has been offering to the Malawians that were without food and hope for it—but only untold hunger and pain. Let us all support our considerate leader, Dr. Joyce Banda, to fulfill her visionary goals for the good of Malawi.

SECOND CHANCES Life is about second chances. This must be understood by those who hold the view that the DPP must never be given another chance in power because a portion of its tenure was messed up. Only one who is crazy will defend that part of governance failure. Equally crazy is one that will condemn the entire rule of the DPP on the basis of that dark portion. Fair appraisal of things must enjoy balance. While it is in evidence that bad things towards the end of the DPP's rule, it is also in evidence that many good things happened under that rule. President Joyce Banda is a culmination of the good things of the DPP administration. Through the Bingu wa Mutharika's policy of promoting women, Joyce Banda was selected, over men, to be his running-mate. It is this decision, fast-tracked by Bingu's death, that led Joyce Banda to the Presidency. This means there is proof that the DPP is able to do well. It is on that basis, and the lessons learnt from its mistakes, that the DPP is asking for a second chance ...
JOYCE BANDA WANTED CHILIMA IN PP STRATEGY COMMITTEE: Malawi's interim President whose presidential aspirations for a substantive 5-year term of office now hang in balance approached DPP's unveiled presidential running mate Saulosi Chilima to be a committee member in the People's Party's 2014 Election Strategy Committee, we can reveal. However, Chilima, who until his unveiling was Managing Director of Malawi's leading mobile phone company, Airtel turned down the offer. Although Chilima gave the Malawi leader a cold shoulder citing his work commitments, acting President Joyce Banda's son, Geoffrey Kachale kept on pursuing Chilima to as late as Friday last week. The First Couple's son kept on inticing Chilima, promising him good business and lucrative jobs if he accepted being in the committee. January 26, 2014 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese government criticized the decision by the United States to exclude Khartoum from the list of invitees to a summit of African leaders to be held in Washington next August. The leadership of the Malawi Congress Party is speaking against the tendency of distributing food items during the ruling party’s political rallies. This comes as about 1.8 million households are facing hunger due to poor yields in the previous farming season. President Joyce Banda and her government machinery have been conducting political meetings dubbed developmental rallies where they distribute food items such as bags of maize. Speaking to Capital FM, MCP Campaign Director Felix Jumbe denounced the development saying it is a serious violation of the right to food as provided for in the country's constitutions. Jumbe says Malawians of different political affiliations are facing hunger not only the sympathizers of the current administration, therefore calls on the authorities to tread carefully on the matter.

Recently, President Joyce Banda in Blantyre proposed for the establishment of a special Corruption court for the expedition of trial of such cases in the country. Other special courts in the country include the Industrial Relations and Commercial Court, Child Justice and the Constitutional Court. Commenting on the proposal, a legal expert cautioned against the proposal saying that it should have to be made objectively and not based on one incident such as the Capital financial scandal. According to Edge Kanyongolo, an Associate Professor of law at the Chancellor College in Zomba basing the proposal on a particular situation would complicate the judicial system. And today, some people in the streets of Blantyre have shot down the proposal to have a special corruption tribunal, saying it will just be a waste of public resources. What are your views on this proposal by President Banda?
