On 11th December, Mexico’s congress passed legislation to ban the use of animals in circuses across the country. This followed a similar ban by Mexico City six months before. The House of Deputies stated that the chamber voted 267-66 in favour of the bill aiming to combat the mistreatment of animals. It calls for fines for violations and requires circuses to submit lists of the wildlife they possess, which would then be transferred to zoos. The bill awaits the signature of President Enrique Pena Nieto.

We The People, America President Enrique Pena Nieto, We the People of America, this day share the mutual concerns of Mexico in dealing with the political and social dilemmas that have violated Mexico and America. Mexican president condemns Texas’ guard deployment. Mexico City (AP) — Texas’ decision to deploy National Guard troops along its southwestern border is, in the view of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, “unpleasant” and “reprehensible.” Last month’s deployment had previously drawn the ire of Mexico, which argues the border should not be militarized and issues should be solved jointly. In an interview with the newspaper El Universal published Friday, Pena Nieto said Texas’ move could affect bilateral relations. Texas Gov. Rick Perry has criticized border security and suggested last month that Islamic terrorists could be entering the U.S. from Mexico, a charge Mexico has dismissed as “absurd.” Texas maintains it needs to deploy National Guard troops to stop drug traffickers. The number of Central American migrants entering Texas also spiked earlier this year, but the flow has since declined.

Canadian CEOs call on Tories to end Mexican travel visa ahead of Harper visit. BY MIKE BLANCHFIELD, THE CANADIAN PRESS, FEBRUARY 10, 2014 OTTAWA - Canada's senior business leaders will urge the Harper government to lift its "intrusive" visa on Mexican travellers ahead of the prime minister's own visit there next week, The Canadian Press has learned. A forthcoming report from the Canadian Council for Chief Executives calls the visa, imposed in 2009 to curb bogus asylum claims, an impediment to reinvigorating the Canada-Mexico relationship. The report, by trade policy expert Laura Dawson, says until Ottawa can fix its own immigration system, it should simply allow Mexicans with a valid U.S. visa into Canada. The report by one of Canada's most influential business groups will be made public exactly one week before Prime Minister Stephen Harper begins a bilateral visit with President Enrique Pena Nieto in Mexico City. One day after their meeting, Harper and Pena Nieto will be joined by U.S. President Barack O ...

Mexico says in talks with China to form infrastructure fund NEW YORK, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Mexico and China are discussing creating a joint fund for investments in infrastructure projects in Latin America's No.2 economy, Mexican deputy finance minister Fernando Aportela said on Tuesday during a visit to New York. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto last year announced his government expected to see more than $300 billion in public and private spending on infrastructure in Mexico between 2013 and 2018, around a third of it in telecoms and transport. The forecast spending was aimed at complementing a wider economic reform drive spanning energy to telecoms that Pena Nieto pushed through Congress last year and which is aimed at boosting long-lagging economic growth. Mexican newspaper Excelsior said on Tuesday Mexico and China were negotiating creating a $2.5 billion fund for infrastructure spending, but gave no sourcing. The Mexican government is to double the annual budget in the troubled western state of Michoacan to try to tackle the underlying causes of rising violence. President Enrique Pena Nieto pledged to spend $3.4bn (£2bn) on schools, roads, hospitals and other infrastructure. Vigilante groups have spent months pushing back the main drug cartel, the Knights Templar, from the region. On security, Mr Pena Nieto would only say that the federal forces would stay in Michoacan for as long as needed. On a visit to the state, he said his initiative aimed to "reverse the conditions of institutional weakness" in Michoacan. "I want to assure the people of Michoacan that we will be with you, that we will join efforts, so this great state returns to its normal activities in an atmosphere of order, calm and confidence," he said in the state capital, Morelia. Praying for the nations: Mexico ~ 3 Feb 2014    Psalm 18:2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.  He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.      Background:  The site of several advanced Amerindian civilizations - including the Olmec, Toltec, Teotihuacan, Zapotec, Maya, and Aztec - Mexico was conquered and colonized by Spain in the early 16th century. Administered as the Viceroyalty of New Spain for three centuries, it achieved its independence early in the 19th century. The global financial crisis beginning in late 2008 caused a massive economic downturn the following year, although growth returned quickly in 2010. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely indigenous population in the impoverished southern states. These cities are defined as those having a population of more than 8 million people and Mexico City ranks among the top ten in the world; its population hovering around 19 million. It is one of many cities in Mexico that give the country its 78% urban population rate. Many of those who have migrated to Mexico City in recent decades have been unable to attain the gainful employment they seek. In evidence, one only has to look as far as the city's slums. Its most notorious, Neza-Chalco-Itza, is widely recognized as the largest slum in the world, with a population of more than four million. For perspective, this one slum alone accounts for approximately 20% of Mexico City's entire population. As conditions of poverty are exacerbated in rural areas of Mexico, migr ...

Mexican Government legalizes Citizen Self-Defense forces by Rodan ( 2 Comments › ) Filed under Mexico, Special Report at January 28th, 2014 - 12:24 am In the last few months, Mexican citizens tired of being at the mercy of The Cartels have formed self defense paramilitary groups. In the state of Michoacan, armed citizens rose up and crushed the Knights Templar Cartel, doing a job neither the useless Mexican police nor the corrupt Army can. Rather than take on these self defense groups, the Mexican government has reached an agreement with them and have legalized them by reviving the Rural Defense Corps. Mexico City — Mexico essentially legalized the country’s growing “self-defense” groups Monday, while also announcing that security forces had captured one of the four top leaders of the Knights Templar drug cartel, which the vigilante groups have been fighting for the last year. The government said it had reached an agreement with vigilante leaders to incorporate the armed civilian groups into ol ...
Mexico City (Reuters) - Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto said on Friday he will send secondary laws that flesh out landmark telecoms and energy reforms for congressional approval as he seeks to boost competition and economic growth.
Fidel Castro - A TRULY GREATLEADER Castro holds court on sidelines of Havana summit (AFP)–4 hours ago Havana — Fidel Castro, the 87-year-old father of the Cuban revolution, held court on the sidelines of a regional summit here this week, looking alert and well in his numerous meetings with foreign leaders. Besides his traditional political friends, the Maximum Leader also received UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for the first time and young Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. Ban said Castro looked physically very well and "mentally alert," with a strong voice and clear ideas. They discussed a "vast range" of international issues and "conflict situations like Syria," Ban said after the meeting Tuesday. The official Communist Party newspaper Granma said Castro "evoked the historic ties that unite Cuba and Mexico" in his meeting with Pena Nieto. It was as an exile in Mexico that Castro launched his guerrilla campaign to topple dictator Fulgencio Batista, setting out from Veracruz in 1956 with a small ...

January 29, 2014 Special Report Mexico’s Armed Self-Defense Forces Surge Questions, contradictory narratives and, above all, calls for calm energize the daily coverage and debate over the armed self-defense phenomenon sweeping parts of Mexico. For their part, corporate media outlets like Televisa play up the deployment of federal police and soldiers to the Tierra Caliente of Michoacan, one of the epi-centers of the movement, graphically displaying the march of the federales in stark digital maps, while stressing proclamations from President Enrique Pena Nieto and his top officials that the federal government has taken charge of the violence-ridden region. “The Mexican state is the only one responsible and the only one with attributions for really establishing security conditions in Michoacan,” President Pena Nieto affirmed while speaking at the recent world economic forum in Davos, Switzerland. Nonetheless, the civilian self-defense groups continue expanding in not only Michoacan but to other parts ...

"The President tastes a sip of tequila as the urging of President Enrique Pena Nieto"
President Enrique Pena Nieto signs a controversial law that changes the constitution to allow foreign companies to drill for oil and gas for the first time since 1938.
Dear Mr. Obama, I'm planning to move my family and extended family to Mexico for my health and I would like to ask you to assist me with a few things. We're planning to simply fly from America to Mexico and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements. We plan to skip all of the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things in the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Enrique Pena Nieto, that I'm on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following: 1. Free medical care for my entire family. Explain to the Mexican president that he can simply reduce the retirement income of the retired members of the Mexican military in order to pay for my family's free medical care. 2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not. 3. All Mexican Government forms must be printed in English. 4. I want my grandkids to be taught Spanish by English speaking (bi-lingu ...
Eleven people found dead in Mexico violence.. Ten charred bodies in a burnt-out truck and another with gunshot wounds to the head have been found in Mexico's southern Oaxaca state. A prosecutors' statement said none of the bodies had been identified and gave no indication as to a possible motive. Tens of thousands of Mexicans have been killed in drug-related violence in recent years but few such killings have occurred in Oaxaca. President Enrique Pena Nieto has pledged to reduce Mexico's high murder rate but violent crime remains at similar levels to those under his predecessor.

It was a dark and stormy evening. Deep below the slums of East Vancouver, Juan Barista paced through his underground laboratory, fiddling with the ties on his white lab coat. His inventions were nearly complete. Soon they would be ready to take back his home country of Mexico.   Three months ago, Francesco Rojas Hernandez had become President of Mexico in a bloodless coup. As CEO of Televisa, the most powerful corporation in the country, Rojas had distracted Mexicans with a new sensational telenova, or Spanish-language soap opera, while shooting a reality show starring then-President Enrique Pena Nieto. Once Nieto was safely out of the way, marooned on a desert island in the South Pacific with only a film crew for company, Rojas had occupied the Presidential Palace and quickly transferred the army and government staff to his payroll. Soon Rojas' friends and insiders were selling department store gift coupons at astronomical prices on the black market.   However, Rojas had downplayed the regime change. " ...
Understanding Pena Nieto's Approach to the CartelsSecurity WeeklyTHURSDAY, MAY 16, 2013 - 04:00 Print - Text Size +Stratfor By Scott Stewart Vice President of Analysis Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's approach to combating Mexican drug cartels has been a much-discussed topic since well before he was elected. Indeed, in June 2011 -- more than a year before the July 2012 Mexican presidential election -- I wrote an analysis discussing rumors that, if elected, Pena Nieto was going to attempt to reach some sort of accommodation with Mexico's drug cartels in order to bring down the level of violence. Such rumors were certainly understandable, given the arrangement that had existed for many years between some senior members of Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party and some powerful cartel figures during the Institutional Revolutionary Party's long reign in Mexico prior to the election of Vicente Fox of the National Action Party in 2000. However, as we argued in 2011 and repeated in March 201 ...

"ZAPATISTAS" BREAK SILENCE After years of silence, secluded in their base communities in Mexico's impoverished south, indigenous Zapatista rebels have re-emerged with a series of public statements in recent weeks, attempting to reignite passions for their demands of "land, liberty, work and peace". In December, 40,000 Zapatista supporters marched through villages in Chiapas, re-asserting their presence. In January and February, Subcomandate Marcos - the Zapatistas' pipe-smoking, non-indigenous spokesman and an international media darling - issued a series of communiques slamming the government of Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) which assumed power in December. "Our pains won't be lessened by opening ourselves up to those that hurt all over the world," Marcos wrote in late January, rallying supporters. "We will resist. We will struggle. Maybe we'll die. But one, ten, one hundred times, we'll always win." The group first made international headli ...
Great! Mexico will having high speed train by 2016! President Enrique Pena Nieto outlined a plan to launch high-speed passenger rail service in Mexico. Although the country has a network of rail lines that link cargo ports on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts with assembly plants in the northern part of Mexico, there are few tourist trains. Passenger service was shut down in the 1990s. Feasibility studies and cost estimates are being drawn up for a high-speed rail system, linking Mexico City with Queretaro city, 120 miles to the northwest, in two hours. The train will operate at speeds of up to 110 mph and is expected to cost approximately $4.5 billion with the federal and state governments funding the project. Engineering studies are to be completed by early March, with the train expected to start operating between 2015 and 2016. Queretaro, one of the smallest of Mexico’s states, is known for its music, art, handicrafts, Unesco World Heritage sites and arched aqueduct system, built in the early 1700s. It ...

Wow, we just took a back seat to Mexico in the fight against illegal drugs. Mexico City (AP) - Newly elected President Enrique Pena Nieto promised Monday to continue combatting all illegal drug production and trafficking in Mexico, including marijuana, despite its legalization in two U.S. states and liberalized use for medical purposes in others. In an interview with The Associated Press on goals for his new administration, Pena Nieto was asked if votes to legalize recreational use of marijuana in Washington and Colorado would make him rethink Mexico's drug-war policy. "The short answer is no," said Pena Nieto, who said he maintains a personal opposition to legalization. "My government will continue mounting a real fight against the trafficking of marijuana and all other drugs."
