China signs £14bn trade deals with the UK amid Premier Li Keqiang's visit in an effort to back major UK infrastructure projects. The state-owned China Development Bank (CDB) also wants to invest in other projects including the High Speed 2 railway and the next generation of nuclear power stations. According to David Cameron, UK Prime Minister, "The UK is the most popular destination in Europe for Chinese investment with more Chinese investment into the United Kingdom in the last 18 months than the whole of the last 30 years combined". Our regional editor Duncan Innes-Ker remarks that 'Premier Li's visit has highlighted that the economic relationship between the UK and China is developing strongly, particularly on the investment side'. He goes on to say that the UK should be doing more to 'push the Chinese to open more of their economy to foreign companies, and to ensure consistent and fair application of regulations in China for both foreign and local firms'.

I know this is a very long post but if you are interested in HS2 please read it and share:- Well today's been interesting to say the least, as some may know the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang offered direct help to build HS2 when Cameron visited China last December. Premier Li is currently on a State visit to the UK and that offer has now translated into the China Development Bank (CDB) which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chinese government signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the City via The CityUK for 14billion worth of trade deals and guess what they want to directly fund HS2 and nuclear power stations, oh yes and to offer loans here in the UK, oh yes and The Bank of China have also announced a memorandum of understanding with the London Stock Exchange so they can increase their presence in the City. As well as this tomorrow China Construction Bank, is expected to be confirmed as the first Chinese clearing bank designated for offshore renminbi (RMB) the Chinese currency trading in London ...

Chinese Foreign Minister Makes Inroads With Modi Government China’s foreign minister traveled to New Delhi to forward an economic agenda for bilateral relations. By Ankit Panda June 10, 2014 In the first major diplomatic interaction between India and China since the Bharatiya Janata Party and Narendra Modi rose to power, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi traveled to New Delhi to meet Indian foreign minister Sushma Swaraj. The two-day visit involved a broad strategic dialogue addressing the gamut of bilateral issues between India and China, but focusing mostly on economic matters and trade. According to Xinhua, “Wang [was] on a two-day visit to India as President Xi Jinping’s special envoy.” The visit was notably warm, with positive rhetoric from both sides. Wang repeatedly praised Narendra Modi’s election victory, referring to him as an “old friend” of China. Wang was likely alluding to Modi’s interaction ...

China’s consumer prices exceeds estimates in May . . . . . . . . . . Consumer prices rose in the world’s second largest economy to exceed estimates in May recording its fastest inflation pace in four months, where the increase came on food costs. Moreover, China’s Consumer Price index inclined more than estimated in May to 2.5%, from 1.8% a year earlier, while analysts’ estimated were 2.4%. PPI in China slightly inclined in May to -1.4% from estimated -1.5%, while the previous reading recorded -2.0% a year earlier. Meanwhile, inflation rates still under the governmental target of 3.5 percent, which may leave the room for policymakers to add more monetary easing to spur the nation’s economic growth. Furthermore, Chinese economy is projected to grow this year at the slowest pace since 1990, while Premier Li Keqiang is resisting broad stimulus and boosts efforts to spur agriculture and small businesses since he managed to cut banks’ reserve requirements. China Prepared to Settle India Border Dispute, Wang Says China is ready for a final settlement of its border disputes with India and prepared to invest more in the South Asian nation if trade rules are eased, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said late yesterday in New Delhi. “Through years of negotiation, we have come to an agreement on the basics of a boundary agreement, and we are prepared to reach a final settlement,” Wang told reporters in the Indian capital near the end of a two-day visit that included a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India and China, home to more than a third of the world’s population, are seeking to prevent their territorial disagreements from affecting economic ties. China is increasingly asserting its territorial claims in disputed waters off its eastern coastline, raising tensions with Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines. “The Chinese are prepared to renew their ties with the Indians in a much more positive way,” Hoo Tiang Boon, a research fellow at the S. The Rise of Narendra Modi and the Tibetan hopes? (Tibetan Perspectives) June 10, 2014 9:36 am The widespread Indian euphoria and the global interest in the stunning victory of Mr. Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India is followed not only with the routine greetings from the world leaders but also historic conglomeration of the SAARC leaders in Delhi, release of Indian prisoners by Pakistan and Sri Lanka as a goodwill gesture and most importantly, with the rise in Indian Sensex. Amid exhilarations and apprehensions, many strategists foresee resurgence of a powerful India under the Modi leadership. Indian democracy too was at its best when political opponents bury the hatchets and wished Mr. Modi success. In absolute surprise, Modi even earned tribute from unexpected quarters of senior Pakistani diplomats as well as Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. International financial experts like British economist Jim O’Neill and Chris Wood etc. also joined the bandwagon in endorsing Mr. Modi as saviour of Indi ...

A day after he held three-hour-long talks with his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj, Wang called on Modi at the Race Course Road office. During the call, the External Affairs Minister was also present. Sent here by Chinese President Xi Jinping as his special envoy to meet with new leadership, Wang is also understood to have conveyed China’s support for the development of India. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang was the first foreign Head of Government to call up Modi after he took over as prime minister. For the last two weeks, my article is pending with THE HINDU editors...they will not publish articles written by students and young scholars. I swear that their shop will be closed down. Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi will make sure that this discrimination against young scholars in India comes to an end at the earliest. although it may appear a little bit outdated but still I am posting here for your comments : How Prime Minister Modi is going to balance between China and Japan --Binod Singh As the commentaries in major Indian newspaper suggested, Prime Minister Modi is going to seek a closer engagement with two East Asian nations China and Japan, which are at mutual antagonistic terms. China and Japan are at loggerheads not only because of the historical issues during the World War II, but also for the sovereign claims over an island in the East China Sea. Since the election of Shinzo Abe, and his visit to Yasukini shrine last year, the relationship between China and Japan has touched an all ti ...

Read More   The African Development Bank is stepping up plans to finance power and rail projects as China boosts lending on the continent by half. The Tunis-based lender is set to endorse this week the Africa50 Fund, which is targeting $10 billion of equity from an initial capital of $3 billion, to finance infrastructure projects. Central bank governors and finance ministers across the continent will meet from today at the bank’s annual conference in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, to back the plan. African nations have a funding shortfall of $50 billion a year to ease energy shortages and transport bottlenecks, according to the World Bank. The AfDB’s spending on the continent is dwarfed by China, which invested more than $13 billion in infrastructure in 2012, as the world’s second-largest economy boosts its reliance on Africa’s oil, coal and ot ...

China’s Export Gains to Cushion Growth as Imports Slump China’s exports rose more than analysts estimated in May, helping to cushion the world’s second-biggest economy from a deeper slowdown as an unexpected slump in imports highlighted risks to growth. Overseas shipments gained 7 percent from a year earlier, the customs administration said yesterday in Beijing, exceeding the 6.7 percent median forecast in a Bloomberg News survey. Imports fell 1.6 percent, leaving a $35.92 billion trade surplus, the biggest in five years according to Bloomberg data. Stronger exports may bolster Chinese leaders’ confidence that a recovery in demand from the U.S. and Europe will support economic growth and reduce the need for stronger stimulus. On June 6, Premier Li Keqiang told officials from eight places, including Beijing, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Hebei, to be proactive in supporting their local economies, saying the government wants a “reasonable” rate of expansion. “The export figures are positive news for ...
China’s coming challenges BEIJING “We are all struck by the contrast between Beijing and Washington,” said George Yeo, the former foreign minister of Singapore. He was referring to the quality of governance in the two capitals — in particular, the sense pervasive in Asia that the United States has lost its ability to execute public policy with competence (see Iraq, Obamacare). Beijing, on the other hand, has been carefully and systematically planning a series of reforms that probably will make China the world’s largest economy within a decade. The contrast is particularly striking because China faces huge challenges and will need to make major economic, political and social reforms as it navigates through the “middle-income trap” that has affected many once-fast-growing developing countries. The United States, on the other hand, remains the world’s most innovative economy with a dynamic and growing society. It simply needs some common-sense policies on a range of issues, such as infrastruc ...

Premier Li: China’s economy will stay within “proper range” has the capabilities and confidence in keeping its economy functioning within the forecast range, said Premier Li Keqiang Thursday at the opening ceremony of the Forum for Asia (annual conference 2014. “With all the principles established and policy options at our disposal, we can handle all possible risks and challenges. China’s development has strong resilience,” Li said in a keynote speech at the opening ceremony, held in China’s southernmost Hainan Province. China has set this year’s target of growth at about 7.5 percent. “The word ‘about’ indicates that there is a range for the GDP growth,” Li said. As long as there is fairly sufficient employment and no major fluctuations, the actual growth will be considered to be within the proper range, be it slightly higher or lower than the target, he added.

‘When India and China Shake Hands’ October 24, 2013 8:43 am [The Wall Street Journal] India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has just finished talks with his Chinese counter-part Premier Li Keqiang in which the two leaders signed an agreement aimed at ratcheting down hostilities on their disputed border that have vexed relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors this year. The agreement comes as both sides continue to build up their military capabilities either-side of the contested boundary. In a statement following the meetings in Beijing, Mr. Singh set out what he perceived had been achieved. A text of his statement is below with key points highlighted in bold. “I am delighted to be in Beijing once again at the invitation of Premier Li. I am touched by the warm welcome and the generous hospitality of the Government and the people of China. I recalled to Premier Li how much India appreciated his decision to make India his first overseas destination after taking over as Premier. This year, I ...

Official sources said Singh will press for an early meeting of the special representatives, possibly by July, for boundary talks. On the trans-border rivers, India will press for "enhancing the mandate" of the existing arrangement that allows sharing of flood time hydrological information, expanding that to cover some of Delhi's concerns, or look at a "separate mechanism" that would address these concerns, the sources said.
