A man has been arrested and charged for allegedly confronting Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger during their 2-0 Premier League loss to Southampton on New Year's Day, reports the BBC. Luke Bryant, 25, from Lymington in Hampshire is said to have broken the laws outlined in the 1991 Football Offences Act by taking to the technical area and going up to Wenger. Mr Bryant will appear at Southampton Magistrates' Court on January 22. The incident occurred with Wenger's Gunners side losing to their hosts and comes just weeks after the Frenchman was abused by supporters as he left Stoke City's Britannia Stadium. As is almost tradition every season now, many unhappy fans want the 65-year-old to leave the North London club for what they perceive as poor form from their team. Wenger was the subject of a campaign to force him out of the Emirates Stadium earlier in 2014/15 as well when a 'Wenger Out' banner was revealed during the match at West Bromwich Albion.
So the new head coach at West Bromwich Albion took up the reins today. Tony Pulis looked relaxed as he began his new job at the Baggies. He said he was joining the right club at the right time. But he's warning Albion fans that although he's never been relegated, it won't be easy to keep West Brom in the Premier League. Here's Ian Winter
SHOCKING! The moment an angry fan confronted Wenger during Saints loss As if Arsene Wenger's New Year's Day wasn't bad enough, the Arsenal boss was confronted by a supporter on the touchline during his side's 2-0 loss at Southampton. With the Gunners trailing late on, the fan appeared to remonstrate with the Frenchman, just weeks after he was abused by travelling Arsenal fans at a train station, following another defeat at Stoke City. It remains unclear which whether the pitch invader at St Mary's was a home or away fan, as some reports suggested he could have been a Saints supporter goading the Arsenal bench. Defeat at Southampton was Arsenal's first Premier League reverse since losing at the Britannia Stadium on 6 December, and leaves them three points behind the fourth-placed Saints. The supporter was given short shrift by Wenger's assistant, Steve Bould, before being led away by stewards. It follows protests against Wenger during Arsenal's 1-0 win at West Bromwich Albion, in which supporters unfurled ...
West Bromwich Albion chiefs have reportedly placed Tony Pulis on the top of their wanted list following the sacking of Alan Irvine. Manchester United vs Chelsea: Preview:Chelsea head to Old Trafford on Sunday looking to maintain their excellent start to the 2014-15 season that has seen them win seven of their opening eight Premier League games. Whilst the Blues were in UEFA Champions League action midweek, they only played 24 hours after Manchester United, who drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion on Monday night football. Louis Van Gaal’s side have been up and down, and whilst they have only lost one of their last seven in the league, they haven’t faced too many top half candidates, and have looked woeful defensively in just about every game. Team News Manchester United Jonny Evans and Paddy McNair missed Monday’s draw at West Brom but may be fit for this game. Both certainly won’t play as right-footed centre- backs – Louis Van Gaal has Marcos Rojo as the left-footed left centre-back, and Tyler Blackett can back him up. Midfielders Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard are still sidelined whilst Wayne Rooney serves the final of his ...
Chelsea-Manchester United Preview Jose Mourinho will face friend and former boss Louis Van Gaal when he takes his in-form Chelsea side to play Manchester United at Old Trafford Sunday. Mourinho spent three years as assistant to Van Gaal at Spanish giants Barcelona and goes head-to-head with the United manager for the first time in the Premier League. United (3-3-2) slipped down to sixth place after a 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Monday evening, with Daley Blind scoring an equaliser with just three minutes left on the clock. Van Gaal was satisfied with the Red Devils' performance against the Baggies but disappointed by defensive mistakes, which he admits they can't repeat against Mourinho's side this weekend. "Chelsea are one of the top teams, as are Manchester City at the moment," Van Gaal said at his pre-match press conference. "Jose has worked more than a year with his team and last year didn't win anything. "You have to build up. They are playing like a team and we have to ...
Chelsea take their unbeaten record to Old Trafford in an intriguing game which sees Manchester United come up against a side from last season’s top four for the first time under Louis Van Gaal. With a short trip to Manchester City and a game against Arsenal also on the horizon, this match begins a sequence which could define what the Red Devils achieve this season, and also reveal how - or indeed if - they can compete against the best that the Premier League has to offer. A record of 12 points from a possible 24 against sides they would all normally expect to beat on paper has made for a disappointing start, with the away form proving their biggest concern. Monday’s draw at West Bromwich Albion extended their wait for a victory on the road, in a game where they needed a late leveller despite dominating possession. With Angel Di Maria, Juan Mata and Robin Van Persie in the side, they can undoubtedly hurt Chelsea and provide a constant threat, but there are question marks over whether their defence can ...
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says the Premier League leaders will look to maintain their positive start to the season at Manchester United on Sunday. Mourinho famously played without a recognised striker as Chelsea ground out a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford three games into last season. But after seven wins in eight games, Mourinho is happy with his tactics. "We are confident. We are in a good situation and there is no reason for us to change our feeling," he said. "We try for the best result as always. "We try to play as good as we are playing and we are always trying to play, respecting an opponent that is one of the best and most difficult in the Premier League." Chelsea's 0-0 draw at United in August 2013 was the first goalless draw at Old Trafford in 77 games Chelsea's impressive start to the season has taken them 10 points clear of United, who have struggled to build any sustained momentum under Louis Van Gaal. The Dutchman will be looking to narrow that gap and get the better of Mourinho, who previousl ...

Juan Mata hopes Man United can continue winning form against West Bromwich Albion. Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata is hoping his side can continue their winning form when they play West Bromwich Albion in a “tough atmosphere” on Monday night, reports the Daily Mail . What we have got is experience and several players who are in that category or close to it."

One surprising fact to emerge from Manchester United’s victory over West Bromwich Albion was that it was the first time Phil Jones and Chris Smalling had formed a starting centre-back partnership in the Premier League since joining the club. Given that both were purchased for significant sums as promising players in that position, the length of time it has taken for the pairing to be tested in the top-flight is remarkable and tells a lot about United and the two defenders. It is three full seasons since Jones, 22, joined 24-year-old Smalling, who had signed in 2010, at Old Trafford with the perceived wisdom foretelling they would succeed Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at the heart of United’s defence. VIDEO Scroll down to watch post-match reactions from David Moyes and Pepe Mel It hasn’t quite worked out that way yet, of course, but with Vidic on his way to Inter and Ferdinand likely to leave once his contract expires in the summer, the torch has never been closer. Jonny Evans, at 26, is the third ...
Premier League Wrap: Chelsea blow Tottenham away, Manchester United lift. Chelsea ramped up their bid for the Premier League title with a 4-0 thrashing of London rival Tottenham on Saturday as Manchester United boosted their hopes of European football next season with a solid win at West Bromwich Albion.
Chelsea pull clear, Man Utd bounce back 08 Mar 2014 22:01:59 Quick-fire goals by Samuel Eto'o and Eden Hazard inspired Chelsea to a 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday that sent them seven points clear in the Premier League. Eto'o put Chelsea ahead in the 56th minute and Hazard added a penalty four minutes later after Younes Kaboul had been sent off for a foul on Eto'o. Demba Ba added a late brace. Eto'o's opener was gifted to him by Jan Vertonghen and both of Ba's goals also stemmed from errors, as Spurs' 23-year wait for victory at Stamford Bridge went on. Chelsea now lead Liverpool and Arsenal by seven points, but both teams have a game in hand, while fourth-place Manchester City, who are nine points off the pace, have three fixtures to fulfil. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho continued to play down his side's title chances, saying: "I would prefer to be in Man City's position, because they have three matches in hand. "We don't have control of our destiny. If we win all our matches, then maybe we a ...
MATCH PREVIEW West Bromwich Albion will be aiming to claim a double over Manchester United when the teams meet at the Hawthorns on Saturday lunchtime. The Baggies stunned the title holders with a 2-1 triumph at Old Trafford in September, but the trend since then has been one of declining fortunes for the Midlanders. The subsequent 21 Barclays Premier League matches have yielded only two victories and the club have handed the reins to Pepe Mel in a bid to preserve their top-flight status. Just one point separates Mel's men from the bottom three with 18th-placed Sunderland having a match in hand. The visitors do not have any relegation issues to concern themselves with, but David Moyes' charges are in unfamiliar territory. Since the advent of the Premier League in 1992, United have finished in the top three every season, and yet this time around they sit seventh. It has been a campaign of inconsistency for the Old Trafford outfit, who have at times strung promising runs together - as evidenced by a six-matc ...
Villa down Norwich, Spurs clip Cardiff Christian Benteke scored twice as Aston Villa came from a goal behind to beat Norwich City 4-1 on Sunday and move seven points clear of the English Premier League relegation zone. It was a remarkable turnaround for Villa, who'd gone three games without scoring a goal. The omens were not promising for Villa manager Paul Lambert against his former club when Wes Hoolahan gave visitors Norwich a third minute lead. But a rainswept Villa Park then saw Benteke score two goals in three minutes and before half time the Birmingham club were 4-1 in front thanks to Leandro Bacuna and an own-goal from Sebastien Bassong. Defeat left Norwich just four points above the bottom three but having played a game more than nearest pursuers Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion, and two games more than beaten League Cup finalists Sunderland. Glenn Murray ended almost a year of frustration by scoring his first ever Premier League goal through a second-half penalty to secure a 1-1 draw for ...
Chelsea *** late winner to end Everton resistance LONDON (Reuters) - Chelsea scrambled a stoppage-time winner to *** a 1-0 victory over Everton on Saturday, showing their Premier League title mettle by claiming three points when they looked on course to suffer another damaging blow. After drawing their last league game against West Bromwich Albion and suffering a chastening FA Cup defeat to rivals Manchester City, Jose Mourinho's side were looking for a morale-boosting return to form. Yet they looked sluggish for most of the match and after finally sparking into life they came up against a stubborn Everton rearguard which only crumbled deep into added time. Chelsea won a free kick wide on the left which Frank Lampard whipped into the penalty area and Everton keeper Tim Howard deflected it into his own net with John Terry sliding in to challenge. "We're delighted with the win and the three points. We made it difficult but they are a very good side and are playing well under (manager Roberto) Martinez ...
West Bromwich Albion boss Pepe Mel vows to keep the Baggies in the Premier League.
You can always rely on a footballer to state the b*ing obvious "West Bromwich Albion striker Victor Anichebe says they must start turning draws into wins to keep away from the wrong end of the Premier League table."
"'Poyet Effect' Benefitting Sunderland. Analytics types will tell you that on a macro level total wage bill and total net spending are the main predictors of a team success and that firing managers, particularly during the season, has a scant overall effect. That may be accurate in absolute terms, but there are obviously outliers. And that is why managers keep getting the bullet. When Sunderland's Gus Poyet took charge of his first game after taking over from interim boss Kevin Ball, who had himself replaced Paolo Di Canio, his club was dead last in the Premier League, with one point from seven games. Sunderland is still technically in the relegation zone—18th in the table—but it is level on points with West Bromwich Albion in 17th and has played one fewer game. More telling is the "Poyet effect." If the season had begun on October 19, with Poyet's debut at the Sunderland helm, the club would be 10th in the table, despite having played one fewer game than most of its opponents. Include cup competition ...
Two massive FA Cup ties 14 February By Tom Williams London – It may be Saint Valentine's Day, but it is revenge, rather than romance, that is in the air ahead of the weekend's FA Cup fifth-round matches. A lack of major head-to-head clashes and true upsets means that this season's FA Cup has yet to capture the imagination, but that could change in round five as four of the country's biggest teams prepare to face off. Manchester City host Premier League title rivals Chelsea on Saturday, with Arsenal tackling Liverpool a day later, and both ties carry extra intrigue due to recent encounters between their respective protagonists. Chelsea took control of the title race with a 1-0 victory at City on February 3, while Arsenal's own championship ambitions were ruthlessly undermined in a chastening 5-1 defeat at Anfield last weekend. Liverpool's 3-2 win at Fulham on Wednesday means that just four points now separate the four teams at the head of the table, with Chelsea leading the way and the club from Merseysi ...
DILEMMA:THE FA CUP- PREMIER LEAGUE- Champions League CONGESTION. According to one report, The Mirror newspaper, Jose Mourinho plans to accept a lighter lineup in the FA Cup to Manchester City to rest his best players for the Premier League run-in and Champions League campaign. That might be/not be as crazy as it seems. Man City FIXTURES: •Feb 15: HOME-Chelsea, •Feb 18: HOME-Barcelona, •Feb 22: HOME-Stoke FIXTURES: •Feb 15: AWAY-Man City, •Feb 22: HOME-Everton, •Feb 26: AWAY-GALATASARAY According to our fixture, we have one full week of rest after playing Man City (In the FA) before we play Everton in the BPL, and Man City have only only two days of rest after playing us in the same competition before facing Barcelona. To us (it seems pretty clear that Pellegrini will opt to rest his players in favour of the Barcelona game if he ever thinks of progressing by use of the home advantage (its tough to play Barca in the return leg at Camp Nou as we all know, and they dont have Torres). Liverpool kept their top-four ambitions alive with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Fulham on Wednesday, but match-winner Steven Gerrard acknowledged they cannot afford to keep giving away goals if they want to play in Europe next season. Gerrard converted a last-minute penalty after Sascha Riether sent Daniel Sturridge tumbling at Craven Cottage, keeping the Reds in fourth spot, three ahead of Tottenham Hotspur in the race for a place in the Champions League. Liverpool were worthy winners but made victory difficult for themselves, giving away two goals to the Premier League's bottom club which forced them to come from behind twice. A comical own goal from Kolo Toure gave Fulham an early lead, before a stunning Gerrard pass allowed Sturridge to level matters just before halftime. Kieran Richardson pounced on a poor clearance from Martin Skrtel to take back the advantage for the hosts just after the hour mark, and after Philippe Coutinho drew Liverpool level for the second time Gerrard finished the comeback fro ...

Cahill is expected to join captain Terry on the injury list. There is bad news for Chelsea ahead of the FA Cup Fifth Round clash with Manchester City on Saturday as Gary Cahill could miss the game through injury. The centre-back picked up the knock during Tuesday night’s 1-1 Premier League draw with West Bromwich Albion and the 28-year-old’s absence could leave manager Jose Mourinho with a serious selection headache. “Once I got the knock, I was struggling from then on,” Cahill was quoted by the Mirror. “It happened when a West Brom player went for a header and I was on the floor. “He landed just inside my knee/calf. It is sore and we’ll see what it’s like today.” The England international joins Blues captain John Terry on the sidelines, with the 33-year-old sitting out the match with West Brom due to a knee problem and there is a chance Mourinho could be without the Portuguese coach’s first choice central defence for the City game. Cahill and Terry gave a masterclass at the back when ...

BBC Pundit thinks Liverpool will beat Arsenal at Anfield With another weekend of Premier League football just around the corner, it's time to give you BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson's predictions for the 10-games that are taking place over Saturday and Sunday. Here are his predictions! Liverpool 2-1 Arsenal "Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers got it wrong that day but, this time, I get the feeling this is a game his side will win." Aston Villa 2-0 West Ham United "Villa's home record is poor but they beat West Brom last time out at Villa Park and now that Christian Benteke has started scoring goals again, there is a different vibe about Paul Lambert's side." Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle United "Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho got everything absolutely spot on again against Manchester City on Monday - they looked a better team than City and fully deserved their win - and I would back them to get another three points on Saturday." Crystal Palace 2-0 West Bromwich Albion "Pulis had already turned results, and the team's work ...
Simon Mignolet reflected on Sunday's 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion with a mixture of frustration and defiance after watching Liverpool let a lead slip at the Hawthorns. Luis Suarez's sheer ingenuity when hemmed in from all angles inside the penalty area allowed Daniel Sturridge to hand the Reds a platform in the match after 24 minutes of play. But, in the 67th minute, former Everton man Victor Anichebe seized upon a stray pass from Kolo Toure, after Mignolet rolled him the ball, and tucked a shot into the bottom corner of the Belgian's net for 1-1. Afterwards, the stopper felt the point could yet prove to be a positive one - and insisted that the focus will now turn to the visit of Arsenal, for which his side has ample time to prepare. "If you play away from home in the Premier League, there are no easy games," Mignolet told Liverpoolfc.com. "I think we dominated in the first half. Deservedly, we made it 1-0 and we created some chances. But when you came away from home, you know you're going to be ...
West Bromwich Albion centre-back Diego Lugano believes his Uruguay team-mate Luis Suarez receives "fierce" treatment in the Premier League. "Luis is fiercely tackled in every game but that's because he is the best Premier League player," he claimed in an interview. "They tackle Luis also because he is a tough guy and he will be up on his feet after being tackled and facing defenders again. "Luis is the best player in the league and even my team-mates at West Brom have asked me to a shirt signed by him." "There are people that still doubt whether Luis is a good person or not," he added. "I always say exactly the same - he is not a bad person for having had troubles with some opponents. "That says nothing about him as a person. In my team, I would like to have a player like him, who fights and troubles his opponents but is like a lion when he has to defend his team-mates. "Luis gets hard tackles all the time and nobody here in England says something about it. But if you insult an opponent inside the pitch, ...
When Brendan Rodgers surveys the dressing room before Liverpool kick off their latest battle on the pitch, the manager sees a squad packed with the leadership qualities necessary in any team. As the boss' embodiment on the field and captain for more than a decade, Steven Gerrard has proven the credentials of his character on too many occasions to name - not least Tuesday's Merseyside derby. The whole squad, though, has drawn on reserves of spirit in recent times, notably in rescuing results and Barclays Premier League points from challenging match situations against Stoke City and Aston Villa. And as the Reds prepare for their next obstacle - a trip to West Bromwich Albion - Rodgers explained why the wealth of leaders congregated in one group can be crucial for his team's ambitions. He commented: "I looked at it the other night - Steven organising, dictating the game and ordering people about. "Martin Skrtel has really taken on board the leadership qualities and was outstanding the other night. Kolo Toure ...
Premier League: Dowd on derby duty The referee for Saturday's Tyne-wear tussle has been confirmed as Phil Dowd - a fourth outing this season in charge of the Magpies, after West Ham at home (drew 0-0), Everton away (lost 2-3) and West Bromwich Albion home (won 2-1). This is scheduled to be the second derby appointment of Dowd's career, the first coming back in October 2010 at SJP when he red-carded Titus Bramble as we won 5-1.

Wenger is unhappy with Chelsea having already played United twice, while his Gunners must meet them again this season. West Bromwich Albion striker Nicolas Anelka has denied an FA misconduct charge over his 'quenelle' gesture and requested a personal hearing. Dortmund head coach Klopp has witnessed his side slump to fourth in the Bundesliga table, 12 points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s Bayern who have a game in hand. “Bayern Munich isn’t our aim for the moment. West Brom v Crystal Palace, 15:00 The Baggies put an end to a long run of league games without a win by beating Newcastle last time out, and in the process also managed to move clear of the bottom three but there is still no announcement about who will replace Steve Clarke as head coach. The away side may have shown a spot of resilience in the league of late but Tony Pulis has an extremely modest squad right now and will almost certainly have to use fringe or reserve players in order to best preserve Palace hopes of Premier League survival. I think the Baggies will come through what may be a close game, at 27/10 with Ladbrokes to win by 1 goal or 4’s to win by 2. West Bromwich Albion striker Nicolas Anelka remains in the squad, but Billy Jones and Victor Anichebe are injured. Crystal Palace are missing a number of players including Kagisho Dikgacoi, Jack Hunt and Jerome Thomas, but there is good news as Stuart O'Keefe could return after injury. English match-fixing scandal threatens the Sodjes' football legacy Former Super Eagles defender Sam Sodje and his brother Akpo have been named as belligerents in the high- profile match fixing scandal threatening to undermine English football Dec 12, 2013 10:00:00 AM ANALYSIS By Ed Dove | Features Editor The ominous reality of match fixing has now reared its ugly head within English football. Previously the scourge of other leagues, notably the Italian, French and Turkish divisions, the news broke earlier in the week that a clutch of players based in Britain have been accused of spot- fixing. Premier League: West Brom to open contract talks with Steve Clarke in New Year: West Bromwich Albion will open... http:…
Is the pressure now on Pellegrini rather than Moyes in Manchester? It is amazing how much things can change in Manchester. For much of the 11 games of this Premier League season, the talk has been about whether Manchester United had exited the title race early on as David Moyes may struggle to find his feet in the Old Trafford hot seat – whilst Manchester City should be considered as amongst the favourites to claim their second Premier League crown three years, under new boss Manuel Pellegrini. When Manchester City took United to the cleaners at Eastlands in September, it seemed everything that had made United great had disappeared, their obituaries were being written and that City had sent out a message to the rest of the league by beating the Champions 4-1. Now looking at the league table it is United that are the top dogs in Manchester with David Moyes’ side putting together a more steady run ever since their loss to West Bromwich Albion at home – United have picked up 13 points from their last f ...

Liverpool vs West Bromwich Albion review: The Uruguayan bagged his first ever Anfield treble to set Brendan Rodgers' side on their way to a comfortable win against a lacklustre performance from Steve Clarke's men Saturday, 26 Oct 2013 16:53 Luis Suarez netted a magnificent hat-trick as Liverpool saw off West Bromwith ease in a 4-1 victory at Anfield. Steve Clarke’s team were chasing a fourth consecutive Premier League win over Liverpool but a virtuoso display from Suarez ensured that was never on the cards. A solo effort and a stunning 18-yard header gave the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break and Suarez’s treble was complete when he converted Steven Gerrard’s 55th-minute free kick. A generous penalty decision allowed substitute James Morrison to hand West Brom a lifeline but Daniel Sturridge crowned a highly satisfying afternoon for Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers with a breathtaking long-range lob. West Bromwich Albion midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu says that his side missed a great opportunity to beat Arsenal in their Premier League encounter this afternoon.
And so it begins. We knew that Manchester United were vulnerable. We knew that the first run of poor form under the new manager would signal a panic. The only thing we didn’t know was how quickly it would happen. United were handed a tricky start by the fixture computer, though not as tricky as Aston Villa who have two more points, but you can’t blame this start on fixtures. With respect to West Bromwich Albion, they should not be winning at Old Trafford and they certainly should not be able to dance through the United defence with that ease. Was he the right man to replace Sir Alex Ferguson? Is he out of his depth? Should he be sacked before he can do any more damage? United have supporters all over the world and on Saturday night, tens of thousands of them were united in their fury over the social networks.. Let’s be clear: United’s start under the former Everton boss has been wretched. For this club to have lost three games before the start of October is unprecedented in the Premier League era. ...

Steve Potts was left delighted after watching West Ham United's impressive 5-0 Barclays Under-18 Premier League victory over Liverpool at Little Heath. The Hammers were on fire throughout the first half heading into the break 3-0 up thanks to a brilliant free-kick from Kieran Bywater and further goals from Jordan Brown and Reece Burke. West Ham found their ruthless touch to go further ahead through Brown and Bywater's second goals to end the game as clear and deserved winners. Potts was happy with both the way the team played and the outcome of the match. "Well it wasn't far off being the perfect performance and result", said Potts. "To go and get a result like that against Liverpool, I don't think you can really ask for much more. "During the week, we said to the boys that recently they haven't ended up getting the results they deserved based on their performances, but on Saturday they did exactly what we were looking for. It was an Away-Day special in the Premier League as 6 travelling sides picked up maximum points. The Tigers tore the Geordies a new one, the Champions became Chumpions, an Italian receives the Spanish Archer (El-Bow) and there was a close shave in Wales as a Brazilian strikes late on. The only way the day could have got worse for Norwich City fans is if their tractor had broken down on the way home as their side went down 1-0 at Carrow Road to Aston Villa. It was a day of triumph for former Canaries boss Paul Lambert whose side has now won all 3 games at Norwich since his services were dispensed with. The day promised much for the home side and started brightly when they were awarded a penalty in the 6th minute. Up stepped the normally reliable Robert Snodgrass only to see his spot kick saved by the ever impressive Brad Guzan. Norwich continued to promise much and would have surely thought it was their day when Villa star Chrisian Benteke was substituted in the 28th minute. It wasn’t to be as with ...
West Bromwich Albion signing Stephane Sessegnon insists he never demanded to leave Sunderland. Sessegnon says he never asked to leave Sunderland – but when the Black Cats accepted West Brom’s offer, he knew he was on his way out. He said: “I didn’t sense that I was going to leave Sunderland, but that’s the life of a footballer. If a club wants you and they accept an offer, then that’s what happens. That’s football. “I never asked to leave the club, but the club accepted the offer and then I had the choice to come to West Brom. “It’s football and I had the chance to continue playing in the Premier League. It’s a good opportunity for me."

Afterwards senior players told Byrne that the situation had become untenable because of the Italian's "brutal and vitriolic" criticism of the squad. The Black Cats have only one point from five Premier League games this season. Former Chelsea and West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo is the bookmakers' favourite to replace Di Canio, with Gus Poyet, Tony Pulis and Alex Mcleish also in the running. Development coach Kevin Ball has taken caretaker charge of the first team and led training on Monday ahead of Tuesday's League Cup tie against Peterborough. Ball, who took over in 2006 for 10 games following *** McCarthy's departure, is ready for his second stint.
SUNDERLAND MANAGER CONTENDERS Steve McClaren, Roberto Di Matteo, Gus Poyet and Roberto Mancini tipped to be in frame to replace sacked Paolo Di Canio Steve McClaren Ellis Short, Sunderland's owner, is not thought to have been a member of the former England coach's fan club but local betting patterns on Monday indicated the big money was on him. Based in North Yorkshire but commuting to QPR to help Harry Redknapp, McClaren understands the north-east and the Premier League. Won the League Cup at Middlesbrough and reached the Uefa Cup final. Assisted Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United and won the Eredivisie at FC Twente. Lowlights include England, Wolfsburg and Nottingham Forest but is a high-calibre coach likes passing football and would understand the mentality of a largely overseas squad. Verdict Short could do a lot worse. Roberto Di Matteo Led Chelsea to the European Cup in 2012 after being sacked by West Bromwich Albion. Likes good progressive football, has shown a pragmatic streak and would appeal ...
6 REASONS MOURINHO’s STRUGGLING Having endured a tumultuous few years at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho returned to Chelsea and declared himself the ‘Happy One’. However, just a mere three months into his second tenure at Stamford Bridge all appears not to be well in: Here are six reasons why: 1 WILLIAM Chelsea made some substantial signings this summer – £61million worth of substantial, in fact. In the furore surrounding Manchester United’s apparent lack of cohesive transfer dealings, Chelsea’s own transfer wranglings were glossed over. While they signed, they didn’t sign well. They bolstered an attacking midfield that already had the potential to be the best in Europe. Maybe United’s transfer dealings weren’t so haphazard after all. 2 Romelu Lukaku Lukaku does of course come under the banner of transfer dealing. However, such was the size of this blunder, it deserves a line in its own right. Put simply, Lukaku scored 17 goals in 35 Premier League games last season for West Bromwich Albion ...
Remember Nicolas Anelka? The player who won the the epl golden boot for Chelsea in the 2008-09 season? Well English newspaper The Sun is reporting that West Bromwich Albion are lining up a move for him. The Frenchman is without a club following his short spell with Italian Serie A giants Juventus, and the report indicates that Steve Clarke is keen on bringing the striker back to the Premier League. Like if you want to see him back in the epl! ★aro★
This bloke is suited for Tiny side. Deluded muppet JOE Kinnear says his experience puts him “head and shoulders” above any other director of football in English football. Kinnear was on Tyneside yesterday for the first time since his controversial appointment at Newcastle United. And top of the agenda was the club’s transfer business, with an improved bid for St Etienne’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the agenda. However, the Magpies face fierce competition for the striker, who is keen to play in the Premier League. Kinnear, 66, returned to Newcastle last month as the club’s “senior executive in charge of all football-related matters”. The appointment was widely-criticised given that the 66-year-old’s involvement in the game over the past nine years has been limited to a five-month spell in charge of Newcastle, which was cut short by a heart attack. For his part, Kinnear feels the club needed a director of football, a position he feels he is more than qualified to succeed in, despite the mi ...
SORRY, HERE'S THE UPDATED VERSION: Young Slovenian goalkeeper Gregor Zabret has confirmed he is joining Swansea City this summer. Sky Sports sources on Friday revealed last season's Capital One Cup winners had agreed terms with NK Domzale for the 17-year-old. And Zabret has now revealed he chose a move to Swansea over their Premier League rivals West Bromwich Albion, as well as Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon. "It is true. I am coming to Swansea City," the teenager told Sportal. "I got some offers this summer, even West Brom and Sporting Lisbon wanted me. But I chose Swansea City some time ago. "That was a decision that was taken after talking with my family. I believe that my decision is the right one. "I know I will have to work hard to prove myself but I am ready for that and I believe that I will succeed in Premier League." Zabret will inevitably be one for the future for Swansea given they already have reliable goalkeepers in Michel Vorm and Gerhard Tremmel.
Chelsea FC have added another fantastic midfield prospect, according to reports By Stephen Schmidt I have to use the word 'report' a bit loosely here though, as the outlet making this claim is The Mirror The Mirror are reporting today that Chelsea have reached an agreement with young West Bromwich Albion midfielder Isaiah Brown that would see him join the West London side. Most of you have probably heard of Brown, as he was on the bench for the first time against Chelsea with the opportunity to become the youngest Premier League debutante ever . This isn't the first we've been linked with Brown, as interest from the Blues has being mentioned in the media for the better part of the past several months. The Sun speculated that we'd be willing to pay upwards of £2 million for the youngster, also mentioning Arsenal with having interest in the player. The Mirror report seems to suggest that there is no agreement in place between the two clubs, meaning any fee would need to be decided by an independent tribuna ...
Football is largely considered one of Nigeria's national sports and the country has its own Premier League of football. Nigeria's national football team, known as the "Super Eagles", has made the World Cup on four occasions 1994, 1998, 2002, and most recently in 2010. In April 1994, the Super Eagles ranked 5th in the FIFA World Rankings, the highest ranking achieved by an African football team. They won the African Cup of Nations in 1980, 1994, and 2013, and have also hosted the Junior World Cup. They won the gold medal for football in the 1996 Summer Olympics (in which they beat Argentina) becoming the first African football team to win gold in Olympic Football. The nation's cadet team from Japan '93 produced some international players notably Nwankwo Kanu, a two-time African Footballer of the year who won the European Champions League with Ajax Amsterdam and later played with Inter Milan (Italy), Arsenal F.C. (London, UK), West Bromwich Albion (UK) and Portsmouth F.C. (UK). Other players that graduated ...

West Bromwich Albion's Gareth McAuley (R) celebrates scoring the opening goal against Liverpool West Bromwich Albion completed a stunning Premier League double over Liverpool on Monday with a 2-0 win at Anfield after Steven Gerrard missed a chance to put the home side ahead with a second-half penalty. Gareth McAuley headed home in the 80th minute, with what was only the Baggies' second attempt on goal in a lop-sided game, to break the deadlock and substitute Romelu Lukaku doubled the tally 10 minutes later. The victory marked a dream return to Anfield for manager Steve Clarke, the former Liverpool assistant coach, after his side beat Liverpool 3-0 in the opening game of the season. The visitors leapfrogged Liverpool to take eighth place on 37 points, behind Swansea City on goal difference. Liverpool have 36. Goalkeeper Ben Foster was the hero on the night, saving Gerrard's 76th minute spot kick after Luis Suarez went down under a challenge from Jonas Olsson. Foster also denied Gerrard in the 50th, when h ...
Liverpool 0-2 West Bromwich Albion | Premier League match report: This was life before Daniel Sturridge, revisit...
It is sort of hard to believe we are having this conversation. Just shy of two-thirds through the Premier League schedule, Manchester City has conceded the fewest goals in the league. The total of 19 goals they have conceded is five better than their nearest competitor, Chelsea, and it is less than a goal against per match. City has played 24 matches and lost twice. Every other Premier League club has lost at least three times, table-topping Manchester United included. Despite it all, City is seven points back of United and the likelihood of the Citizens defending their Premier League title lessens with each passing punchless draw. The recent 0-0 failure at Loftus Road against the worst side in the Prem, Queens Park Rangers, dealt another rocking shot to City's championship aspirations. What in the Colin Bell End is going on here? You Play to Win the Game Manchester City is drawing itself into second place. It is not the two losses (home to Manchester United, away to Sunderland) that have placed City so f ...
Only very infrequently would a manager greet a match-winning performance with a sigh, but that might well have been what Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp did after his side won 1-0 away to West Bromwich Albion. Ending their hoodoo at The Hawthorns is one thing, but can Rangers continue their unbeaten 2013 with a positive result against London rivals West Ham United at Upton Park? What's the story? Disbelief was the primary reaction when the news filtered through that QPR had beaten the Baggies thanks to a winning goal from Jay Bothroyd. While it is customary to greet any win in football with a whoop and a cheer, to put it kindly the Rs have more pressing issues than a fourth round tie against Milton Keynes Dons. Surviving in the Premier League, not seeing off opponents in the FA Cup, is what Rangers need most. Therefore the result was surely, on the whole, potentially detrimental? Not in the slightest. Form is a precious commodity and must be jealously guarded by any team fortunate enough to posses ...
Gossip from today's Daily Mirror Tom Ince has seen his dream return to Liverpool put on hold - because Blackpool are refusing to take Brendan Rodgers' calls. Manchester United chief executive David Gill has confirmed the club want to sign Crystal Palace sensation Wilfried Zaha. Norwich are plotting an ambitious bid for Celtic striker Gary Hooper and are willing to sell Simeon Jackson to help finance the deal. Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert may hijack Fulham’s bid for Derek Boateng. Reading are ready to smash their transfer record by paying £8.3million for sought-after Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas. Louis Saha will be the first victim of Martin O’Neill’s mission to shake up his Sunderland squad. Wesley Sneijder is keeping the door open for a possible Premier League move by maintaining he will not be rushed into joining Galatasaray. Alan Shearer has blasted money-grabbing Loic Remy for not taking up the chance of becoming a Newcastle hero. Argentine side San Lorenzo have admitted they cannot afford to ...
SAMF: The assistant referee who told Joleon Lescott to thank the Manchester City fans at the Emirates on Sunday has been removed from duty for Tuesday's FA Cup third-round replay between West Bromwich Albion and Queen's Park Rangers as punishment by referees' officials. John Brooks captured the imagination of fans when he was caught on camera telling Lescott that the City fans deserved to be thanked because of the high ticket prices they had paid to watch the Premier League game at the Emirates. During the post-match handshakes, the Sky Sports microphones broadcast Brooks saying to Lescott: "They've paid 62 quid over there, go and see them".
Romelu Lukaku has scored in five of his seven Premier League starts for West Bromwich Albion. Do you think we should get him back yet?
