Premier League, King Power Stadium - Leicester City 5 (Ulloa 17', pen. 83', Nugent pen. 62', Cambiasso 64', Vardy 79') Manchester United 3 (Van Persie, Di Maria, Ander 57'; Tyler Blackett sent off) Leicester City enjoyed a thrilling 5-3 victory over a woefully brittle Manchester United at the King Power Stadium. United surged into a two-goal lead when Radamel Falcao crossed for Robin Van Persie to head in at the back post, before Angel Di Maria scooped a wonderful shot over Kasper Schmeichel. Leicester pulled one back 14 seconds later, Leonardo Ulloa left unmarked by Rafael to head in at the near post. Wayne Rooney had been dropped back into the number 10 role after Van Persie and Falcao started. Before the match, Louis Van Gaal had described Rooney’s performances up front this season as, ‘not spectacular.’ He was little better in this role, playing at half the pace of those around him. In the second half, United extended their lead through Ander Herrera’s flick, but Leicester pulled one back afte ...
Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will always play when fit, indicating that Robin Van Persie could find himself dropped to the bench over the forthcoming weeks. Speaking in his pre-match press conference, ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium, Van Gaal told reporters that only two players were assured of their positions in his starting line-up: Rooney and David De Gea. “My captain shall always play and the goalkeeper also - that is not a surprise,” Van Gaal commented . “I don’t think any players are fixed. Only the captain has the privileges but no other player. Every player knows that and when you see how I manage my team, it is like that.”

Louis Van Gaal sends title warning Manchester United boss ready to challenge for Premier League title THIS season After beating Queens Park Rangers 4-0 at Old Trafford, Manchester United are now ready to challenge for the title THIS season, according to their manager, Louis Van Gaal. The Dutchman picked up his first competitive win as the United boss, after drawing two and losing one, and after the game, he stated his desire to win the Premier League this season. Goals from Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata gave The Red Devils their first win of the season, and when asked about his expectations for the campaign ahead, Van Gaal had this to say after the game: "I want to win the Premier League title," he said. "If it is not this year, then the second or third year. I want to give a championship to the fans." If United are to win the league this season, they will have to catch up with Chelsea's Jose Mourinho, who are already seven points ahead of the Manchester side. Written by Alex B ...

UNiTED STUfFS: Louis Van Gaal hailed a “fantastic” Manchester United performance but insisted his team will be much better and hopes they will end as the Premier League’s highest scorers after Queens Park Rangers were defeated 4-0 at Old Trafford. The victory was the first win of the season for United and the Dutchman, at the fifth attempt. By the close Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie, Juan Mata, Radamel Falcao and Ángel di María had illustrated the attacking riches now at Van Gaal’s disposal. Di María’s goal on his home debut, Ander Herrera’s first for United, plus goals from Rooney – to make him the third highest Premier League goalscorer on 175 – and Mata lifted the club to ninth place with five points. “We have always to analyse what we have done. The result is fantastic but we can get much better,” said Van Gaal. “This is a good start. When you have a result of 4-0 then you can be happy as a coach but you always have points you can improve. We were very dominant and scored goa ...
THEATRE RENOVATION It was Old Trafford that did for Manchester United last season. The Red Devils lost seven times on home soil, as many times as relegated Norwich City, and after another reversal on the opening day of the season, to Swansea, Sunday’s match against QPR was must-win for Louis Van Gaal. And in a reasonably poetic twist, United scored three times before half-time at home in the league for the first time since that spring night in April 2013 when Robin Van Persie scored a first-half hat-trick and Sir Alex Ferguson won his 13th and final League Title wit the club. 17 months on and the new era finally looks like it has arrived, with new signings Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria scoring and Wayne Rooney reaching 175 Premier League goals, a total only Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole can better. The last time United failed to win any of their opening three league games, in 2007-08, they won the fourth match and went onto claim the title.
Manchester United demolished QPR at Old Trafford on Sunday to record their first win of the Premier League season. Stuart Mathieson was at the game for M.E.N Sport - you can read his match report here if you haven't already. Below are excerpts from what the national papers made of the Reds. "It was never United’s intention, one suspects, to arrange a mass emergency air drop of proven talent into Carrington. Reinforcements were always going to be bought, but the scale of the spending reflects the team’s poor start after a misleading pre-season tour of America. This is where Van Gaal comes into his own. Few managers possess the skill to integrate so many players so quickly, but LVG set about the task with relish, finding a shape to accommodate Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Juan Mata, while abandoning the three- defender experiment." Paul Hayward, Telegraph "If Van Gaal was minded quietly to drop that 3-5-2 system then this a day like this was the perfect opportunity to surreptitiously file it away ...
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has matched Thierry Henry's all-time Premier League goals record with his strike against QPR on Sunday. The England captain picked up the ball from Ander Herrera before cutting inside from the left and beating Rob Green at his near post to give Louis Van Gaal's side a 3-0 lead before half-time. Rooney has now scored 175 times in the English top flight, the same as Former Arsenal hero Henry. The Former Everton forward reached the landmark in 377 appearances, whereas Henry took just 258. Rooney is now joint third in the all-time scoring charts, and needs just 13 more goals to leapfrog Andy Cole into second. But he is still 85 behind former Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer, who notched 260 times in 441 appearances.

Wayne Rooney's bicycle kick against Man City - one of the greatest goals ever scored in the Premier League!
Manchester United will give debuts to a posse of new players, including Radamel Falcao, when they attempt to kickstart their flatlining Premier League season against Queens Park Rangers on Sunday (10. Falcao was the headline acquisition of United’s £150 million close-season splurge and is expected to get his first run-out at Old Trafford following his loan move from Monaco. Fellow new signings Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Luke Shaw are also in line to make their debuts, the latter having overcome a hamstring problem, while record-signing Angel Di Maria will make his first home appearance. United’s need for reinforcements was emphasised by a disappointing start to the season in which they failed to record a win in their first three league games and were bundled out of the League Cup by third-tier Milton Keynes Dons. With players such as Robin Van Persie, Juan Mata and captain Wayne Rooney also at his disposal, manager Louis Van Gaal now faces a challenge to accommodate all of his star names in his pre ...

Man United FACTS Manchester United have not lost their opening two league matches since the inaugural Premier League season in 1992-93, when they were beaten by Sheffield United and Everton. Manager Louis Van Gaal has lost his first two matches of a domestic league campaign on only one occasion in his career - at AZ Alkmaar in 2008-09. United won 10 matches away from home last season - only Arsenal fared better, with 11 victories. They have lost just one of their last seven Premier League away games - a 2-0 defeat by Everton in April. Wayne Rooney needs one more goal to become joint-third all-time scorer in the Premier League alongside Thierry Henry with 175 goals.
Manchester United have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of Angel Di Maria with the Real Madrid star having decided he wants to join Louis Van Gaal's side, Goal understands. United are ready to pay in excess of £45 million to get their man and Goal understands the club will offer him a pay packet that eclipses Wayne Rooney's £300k-a-week deal, including signing on fee and additional bonuses. Goal revealed back in July that an agreement between the Premier League club and Real Madrid was close and now Di Maria's desire to link up with Van Gaal should push the deal over the line. The former Benfica star's Madrid career is all but over, with boss Carlo Ancelotti revealing on Thursday that Di Maria had asked to leave the club having rejected a new deal to prolong his stay at the Bernabeu. The summer arrivals of James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos have nudged Di Maria down the Los Blancos pecking order, with the Argentine being left of the squad for the Supercopa de Espana defeat to Atletico Madrid on Friday.

Premier League: Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney keen to move on - TEAMtalk
Manchester United are confident Danny Welbeck will still be at the club after the summer transfer window closes. The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to other sides in the Premier League, including Hull City who have been rumored to be plotting a £14million. But the Mirror reports United want to keep at the club as he fits in new boss Louis Van Gaal’s plans to play in the 3-5-2 system. The England international may find it difficult to receive opportunities upfront due to the presence of Wayne Rooney, Robin Van and Javier Hernandez, but could be used as wide player due to his work ethic. That will disappoint Hull who made Welbeck their main target to replace Shane Long who has made a move to Southampton for £12million. The FA Cup runners-up have been keeping an eye on several fringe players from major Premier League sides as they look to emulate their success from last season.

Millions of Reds all over the world are united today in condemnation of a dire opening day performance from Louis Van Gaal’s side. The 2-1 defeat at the hands of Swansea City in front of a packed Old Trafford shattered hopes that a return to the glory days are just around the corner following last season’s sorry showing. Hopes were high going into the new season following the arrival of Van Gaal. But the display against a solid, but hardly sensational, Swansea was a total let down. Certain players – Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Javier Hernandez, Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini and, of course, Nani – should hang their heads in shame. You wonder just how bad the Reds would be without the newly-appointed skipper Wayne Rooney. Sadly, only the England striker out of this sorry bunch of a squad would be an automatic choice for City or Chelsea, who are sure to be contesting the Premier League title. And arguably hardly any other of the United starting XI would make the Arsenal or even Liverpool teams in c ...
Manchester United 1-2 Swansea City: Sigurdsson condemns Van Gaal to opening day defeat The Iceland international struck late on to give Garry Monk's men a famous victory, despite Wayne Rooney cancelling out Ki Sung-Yueng's first-half opener with an acrobatic strike Gylfi Sigurdsson's smart finish saw Swansea Cityclaim a surprise 2-1 win at Manchester United as the Louis Van Gaal era started in defeat. Sigurdsson bagged the winner 18 minutes from time on Saturday as Van Gaal - tasked with improving the fortunes at Old Trafford after David Moyes' disastrous spell in charge last term - endured a day he will want to forget in his opening Premier League fixture. The Dutchman's 3-4-1-2 system did not appear to suit United despite being used in pre-season and they found themselves behind when Ki Sung-Yueng scored from 20 yards just before the half-hour mark. Van Gaal, known for his tinkering, swapped to 4-4-1-1 in the second half and it appeared to be the tonic for United's response, led by new captain Wayne R . ...
England Under-21s defender Eric Dier enjoyed a dream debut for Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday by firing a late winner against West Ham United FC on the opening day of the new Premier League season. The 20-year-old, playing at right-back, saw his run forward picked out by Spurs and Under-21s team-mate Harry Kane deep into added time at the Boleyn Ground before rounding 'keeper Adrian to score the winning goal. And Dier wasn't the only Under-21s star to be on the scoresheet, as Saido Berahino netted a brace for West Bromwich Albion against Sunderland AFC whilst New Manchester United captain and England striker Wayne Rooney opened his account for the campaign. Read our full round-up here:
Van Gaal rues United performance Louis Van Gaal was disappointed with his Manchester United side's disjointed display after Swansea won 2-1 to gatecrash his first Premier League match at Old Trafford. Ki Sung-yueng stunned the expectant United fans by handing the visitors a first-half lead, before newly appointed captain Wayne Rooney scooped an overhead kick home from close range to level the scores after the break. But just when United were expected to go on and secure the victory Gylfi Sigurdsson bundled the past David De Gea, who should have done better, to get Van Gaal's reign off to a losing start. "We didn't reach the level we have shown in the past matches and that is disappointing because this is the most important match," Van Gaal told BT Sport 1. "We were disappointing in defence and we are disappointed with ourselves and that's why we lost today." The Dutch boss, who has won League Titles with every club side he has managed so far in his career, quickly batted away suggestions that the opening- ...

Premier League - Paper Round: Welbeck linked with shock destination Welbeck targeted by Hull: Hull City are set to make a record-breaking bid to sign Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck, reports the Daily Mirror. Welbeck will start the new season as United's third choice striker, behind Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie, and his chances of seeing regular first-team action are limited. Hull boss Steve Bruce is after a replacement for Shane Long and is hoping Louis Van Gaal will agree to cash in on the England forward. The Tigers will expect to pay around £14 million for Welbeck. This could be a good move for Welbeck, who needs to be playing regular football at this stage of his career. Unfortunately, that isn't going to happen at United, and a move elsewhere appears to be the obvious solution. That said, Van Gaal may be unwilling to offload a player he is likely to view as a valuable squad player, especially if Javier Hernandez is on his way out of Old Trafford.

Marouane Fellaini grabbed a last-minute winner as Manchester United warmed up for the Premier League with a 2-1 victory over Valencia. The Belgian, who has had a tough time at Old Trafford since he was signed by David Moyes nearly a year ago, pounced on a defensive mistake in injury time to ensure the Reds finished their pre-season programme unbeaten. Darren Fletcher had put United ahead early in the second half, after Wayne Rooney had missed a penalty before the break. Rodrigo equalised in Valencia’s best spell, but just as the friendly looked to be drifting to a draw, substitute Fellaini pounced for the deciding goal. Louis Van Gaal's first game in charge at Old Trafford saw the Dutchman unveil the 3-5-2 system that served him well so far in pre-season, but although United looked comfortable the game only came to life as a contest when Rooney struck his spot kick against the base of the post having been clipped going for an Ashley Young cross. Fletcher put United ahead with a deflected shot from the ' ...

Paul Scholes insists he is ready to tell it how it is in his new role as a TV pundit. Neville threw the ice bucket over Scholes as part of a charity cause for the James McCarthy Foundation - not the Everton midfielder, but a young man who suffered a brain tumour in a car accident and wants to complete his 'bucket list' - and the former United midfielder apparently requested that Darren Fletcher be next in line to be soaked. Manchester United reach “verbal agreement” on $80 million Arturo Vidal deal Arturo Vidalis edging closer to the exit door at Juventus after Manchester United are said to have reached a “verbal agreement” with the reigning Italian champions. Vidal, 27, is set to become the most expensive player in United’s history as an $80 million deal has been agreed according to Tuttosport in Italyand reports from Vidal’s homeland Chile. [RELATED: Transfer Rumor Roundup] In those reports it states that Vidal will be paid $470,000 per week, which would make him the second-highest player at the club just behind Wayne Rooney. Vidal is a great box-to-box midfielder who has shone for Juve over the past few seasons, but is he that good? Although the numbers seem a little off and slightly extortionate, even for a player of Vidal’s quality, you have to say that United need to splash the cash in order to elevate themselves back to the upper echelons of the Premier League. That’s stating the obvious, but so far n ...

Old Trafford side offer Juventus star a massive reason to consider a Premier League switch. Man United continue to pursue Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and as well as launching a fresh £40m bid the Old Trafford side are also set to offer the Chilean a massive contract according to the Daily Express . Read more Manchester United FC news. Boss Louis Van Gaal is keen to add some creativity to his midfield and will hand the former Bayer Leverkusen man a massive £200k a week deal that would see Vidal earn the same as Robin Van Persie, with only England man Wayne Rooney being paid more at the Premier League outfit. Comments made by Juventus director Pavel Nedved would suggest that a move for Vidal was plausible with the former Czech Republic star stating temptingly; "Our strategy is clear; we want to keep all our best players, including Vidal and Pogba. "We don't want to sell anyone, especially Vidal. "Certainly, if there were a high bid for them, we'd have to think about it." Such a contract offer would c ...

United's game against Swansea City on 16 August will be the second time the Reds have played in the opening Premier League fixture of the campaign. In 2005, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney scored in a 2-0 win at Everton.
Uruguay forward Luis Suarez did something which he did not manage to do in the Premier League this season – score past Joe Hart – as he netted twice in the South Americans’ 2-1 win over England in their Group D clash in Sao Paulo. While Roy Hodgson named the same 11 as the one which started against Italy in Manaus, he gave Wayne Rooney the role behind Daniel Sturridge up front. Following their 3-1 defeat by Costa Rica, Oscar Tabarez named no fewer than five changes to his starting-line-up, with the talismanic Suarez fit again after a knee injury. Indeed, it was Suarez who created the game’s first real chance. His whipped, low corner to the near post looked to be swinging-in, catching Hart off-guard, but the ‘keeper recovered and parried the ball behind for another corner. England’s best early chance also came from a set piece. A goal-bound effort from Sturridge hit the arm of Diego Godin and referee Carlos Velasco awarded a free-kick in a central position. Rooney stepped up to take it and curl ...
Four Most Disappointing Football Stars Of 2014 World Cup So Far The Brazil World Cup has been a timely reminder of how some of the game’s biggest stars have fallen since we last saw them on the international stage. While some players are setting the competition alight with incredible goals and wonderful performances, others are leaving the competition with their tails between their legs. Below are some of the stars who have so far failed to live up to their billing: Steven Gerrard: The Liverpool captain took up where he left off against Chelsea few days to the end of the past English Premiership season; a calamity that all but ended the Merseysiders’ quest for a first League Title in the Premier League era. This World Cup was supposed to be some sort of redemption for the Englishman as he led a brand-new, promising young England squad to Brazil. He, along with fellow veteran Frank Lampard and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, were the only survivors from a talented, but failed Golden Generation. ...

Suarez: Uruguay must respect England's young guns The Liverpool striker praised Leighton Baines and Wayne Rooney, though he believes Roy Hodgson's side still have weaknesses in defence that he can take advantage of Luis Suarez believes that Uruguay must be careful when they take on England at the World Cup despite the Three Lions' inexperienced squad. Suarez, who is recovering from a knee operation and is hopeful of playing a full part in Brazil, could come face-to-face with a number of his Premier League counterparts when Uruguay face Roy Hodgson's side in Sao Paulo on June 19. And he feels that the youthful nature of Hodgson's squad will give them an extra edge during the tournament, though he still feels they have issues in defence. WAYNE ROONEY : CAN HE LIGHT UP BRAZIL? More than a decade after he made his England debut as a fearless and prodigiously-talented teenaged tear-away, it is still hard to find a consensus on Wayne Rooney's value to his country. Is he the world-class talisman upon whom several England managers - as well as thousands of travelling fans - have invested their hopes of overdue success? Is he merely a good player whose intermittent brilliance exposes the mediocrity of many of his international teammates? Or is he the English enigma - perhaps even underachiever - who has caused so much frustration at major tournaments? What is clear is, that at the age of 28 and with 90 caps and 38 goals behind him, Rooney owes England a big World Cup in Brazil. The Liverpool-born striker might have won Premier League and Champions League titles since joining Manchester United from Everton in 2004, but his England career has no obvious mark of distinction. He is even waiting for his first goal at a World Cup. In Germany in 2006, ...

The Former Everton forward has played a huge number of matches since bursting onto the scene at a young age and his former team-mate feels that his best may be behind him Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is concerned Wayne Rooney may be past his peak after playing too many games since his meteoric rise to prominence as a teenager. The 28-year-old made his Premier League debut at the age of 16 before moving to Old Trafford as an 18-year-old, but has come increasingly under the microscope ahead of the World Cup. With a huge burden of expectation on his shoulders for both club and country, along with the sheer quantity of matches that he has played, Scholes is worried Rooney may have reached his best earlier than expected. "Wayne was in the Everton team at 16 years of age, in 2003," the former United midfielder wrote in a blog for Paddy Power. "Since then he's played at Euro 2004, two World Cups, Premier League and Champions League every year at United. "There's a chance he's worn out. "Wayne's peak may ...

Five Memories In A Season To Forget For United Fans Adnan Januzaj It’s been a mixed season for Manchester United supporters (if mixed is another way of saying horrendous), and long before the season was up they were counting down the days until it finished. Here, Footy Matters looks at the five abiding memories from 2013/14. THE FALSE DAWN The opening day of the Premier League season saw United travel to Swansea and come away with a 4-1 win. Robin Van Persie and Danny Welbeck scored two each, with both their second strikes absolute beauties, while the unsettled Wayne Rooney came off the bench to a resounding reception and provided two assists. At the time it seemed as if the new season would be business as usual – A STAR IS BORN. With United and David Moyes under pressure after some bad early results, they went to Sunderland with the possibility of losing three consecutive league games for the first time in 12 years. Moyes sprang a surprise by handing Adnan Januzaj his debut but almost immediately he ...
y Hodgson has named England's 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. While there is an experienced core to the squad — Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Glen Johnson have over 300 caps between them — the overriding theme is one of of youthful vigour and promise. Or inexperience, if you're feeling ungenerous. As expected, this season's Premier League success stories are well represented. Five of the stars of Liverpool's oh-so-close title campaign are selected, including forward Daniel Sturridge and midfielder Jordan Henderson, while Southampton and Everton have contributed three players each, the hugely exciting Ross Barkley among them. However, indifferent seasons with Manchester United mean that Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick only make the reserve list, as does West Ham's Andy Carroll. Tottenham players Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend, the star of qualifying, have missed out through injury — this is, incidentally, the first time England will go to a major tournament without ...

Manchester United manager Ryan Giggs enjoyed a winning start to his Old Trafford reign as goals from Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata saw off Norwich. Giggs, in temporary charge after the sacking of David Moyes, watched Rooney score a penalty and curling effort either side of half-time. Substitute Mata added a third and headed in from six yards to keep United in the hunt for a Europa League spot. Defeat leaves Norwich one point above the Premier League relegation zone. The Canaries arrived in Manchester at the end of a week in which United underwent a second managerial change in 10 months, with Giggs - the club's most decorated player - asked to take charge by United's vice chairman Ed Woodward. The 40-year-old promised a return to the traditional Manchester United style of play ahead of kick off, with "passion, speed, tempo, bravery and imagination," to the fore. Most of the play came down the right wing, with Phil Jones and Antonio Valencia sending in a number of poor crosses. Just before half time, Steven Whittaker brought down Danny Welbeck as he prepared to latch onto a loose ball Norwich failed to clear, and Wayne Rooney scored with a confident penalty. In the second half, Rooney took three minutes to extend the lead, curling in a fine shot from 25 yards. United regained some of their old confidence, and ...

Bastian Schweinsteiger is suspended following his first leg sending-off, Javier Martinez also misses out through suspension, while a third key midfielder, Thiago Alcantara, is out injured. Manchester United have doubts over the fitness of Wayne Rooney, although the striker has travelled to Bavaria despite his injured toe, which was heavily bruised in last week's first leg at Old Trafford. But experienced left-back Patrice Evra has indicated he expects to be fit enough to return to the side after missing the first leg through suspension and despite struggling with a knee problem. The visitors made a determined start to the second half and, with Chelsea struggling to assert themselves, Mourinho introduced Hazard from the bench. The Belgian immediately had an impact, playing a neat backheel into Salah inside the box, where the Egyptian was brought down by half-time substitute Andy Wilkinson for a Chelsea penalty. Lampard'seffort was initially saved by Begovic down to the goalkeeper's right, but the England midfielder responded first to tap the loose ball into an empty net. Joey Barton says English are players 'not world class' Use accessible player and disable flyout menus QPR midfielder Joey Barton says English players are "not world class" and thinks fans "get sucked into the hype of the Premier League". Barton believes foreign players in Premier League teams make Englishmen "look better than they are", and compares the "mentality" and "discipline" of Wayne Rooney unfavourably with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo. You can listen to Barton's full interview with Sir Clive Woodward on Thursday on BBC Radio 5 live at 19:30 BST. No subject is off limits as he opens up about his troubled childhood, the "weak" managers he has worked under and talks about his own ambition to become a leading coach. Barton also discusses England's chances at the World Cup and the FA's development of players, and recounts what happened before his infamous sending-off against Manchester City at the Etihad in the final match of the 2011-12 league season.
Bastian Schweinsteiger scored a vital away goal as Bayern Munich drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, and was later sent off. Nemanja Vidic opened the scoring with a brilliant second-half header but United's shock lead did not last long, with Schweinsteiger's crisp volley soon levelling proceedings. The Germany international would not finish the game, however, as he shown a second yellow card late on after a rash challenge on Wayne Rooney. He will, therefore, miss the second leg on April 9, along with his defensive team-mate Javi Martinez, who picked up a booking of his own for a cynical foul on Javier Hernandez. The hosts were under the cosh for almost the entire match but captain Vidic grabbed the opening goal 13 minutes into the second half as Europe's premier club competition continued to represent a bright spot in United's otherwise troublesome campaign. Despite their fall from grace domestically, the Premier League champions had won all four of their European ties at Old ...

'All the coaches around the world do not want to be favourites before the tie. I have to accept that we are. Last season Bayern won everything and this season we were 25 points ahead of our opponents and we won the title seven games early. But I know in the deep of my heart which team we are going to play against. 'Maybe they have not played a good season in the Premier League but they make a good season in the Champions League. When I see Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Chicharito, Danny Welbeck, I know the quality these player haves. For one game or two games, they can make the best performance of the season and beat us.'

Manchester United's senior hierarchy is “evaluating all possibilities” as it attempts to arrest the club's steep descent under David Moyes. Contrary to public statements that Sir Alex Ferguson's successor will definitely be granted at least a second season as manager, Moyes' dismissal is prominent among those possibilities. Though Tuesday's humiliating 3-0 home loss to Manchester City ensured that United's first post-Ferguson season is statistically the club's worst in the Premier League era, the review of potential candidates to replace Moyes should not be regarded as a knee-jerk reaction. Key decision-makers within the Old Trafford board have been assessing potential replacements as manager for several weeks and further talks are planned. Having already sanctioned a spend of over £60 million on two headline transfers, handed Wayne Rooney a club-record contract renewal, and approved an unprecedented recruitment spend for this summer, the Glazer family is said to be concerned that the Scot will con . ...

'Pedestrian. Predictable. Man Utd were a mess' 26 March 2014 Updated 07:01 GMT By Phil Mcnulty - Chief football writer, BBC Sport The sight of a line of Old Trafford stewards guarding "The Chosen One" banner draped over the Stretford End since the appointment of David Moyes as Manchester United manager suggested the mood has started to sour. And the sound of loud and mutinous voices - not too many but enough to be noticed - raised against Moyes and even in the direction of Sir Alex Ferguson, the man who did the choosing, in the directors' box as Manchester City inflicted the latest embarrassment on the fallen Premier League champions carried even greater significance. Liverpool winning 3-0 at Old Trafford less than a fortnight ago was arguably a greater shock to the system than City winning by the same margin on Tuesday as the Merseysiders have barely appeared in United's rear view mirror in title terms in recent years. But there was a difference. United's supporters stayed in place in a noisy show of def ...

KEY BATTLES: Wayne Rooney can check Manchester City's title charge The Red Devils will be gunning for revenge after their 4-1 defeat to the Citizens at the Etihad back in September. Manchester United go into Tuesday’s derby against Manchester City a whopping 18 points off top. With their title hopes gone, some Man United fans are left praying for Liverpool not to win their first Premier League title. Some would even go as far as wishing victory for Manchester City tomorrow night. 1:WAYNE ROONEY v Vincent Kompany Rooney goes into the match in a rich vein of form. The striker has flourished for the Red Devils ever since he signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract last month. Wayne Rooney posted a goal of the season contender as Manchester United ended a memorable week by winning 2-0 at West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday.
Football - Moyes: Rooney strike is derby boost Manchester United Manager David Moyes claims his players will carry "vital belief" into Tuesday night's derby after Wayne Rooney's wonder strike set up victory at West Ham. PA Sport Report – 21 minutes ago Rooney's 58-yard goal spurred United to a 2-0 Premier League victory at Upton Park, and title-chasing Manchester City are next up for Moyes and his men at Old Trafford. The 28-year-old's eighth-minute opener evoked memories of Beckham's famous halfway-line lob against Wimbledon. Former England captain Beckham was a conspicuous face in the crowd as Rooney mimicked his long-range effort from that 3-0 Wimbledon victory back on August 17, 1996. Beckham's wry smile spoke volumes of Rooney's immediate contender for goal of the season, and United manager Moyes suggested the strike can breathe confidence through his revitalised Red Devils. "It was a great goal by a top, top player: technical ability, and awareness to know exact where the goalkeeper was," said Moy ...
Wayne Rooney on the half line takes control of the ball and smashes the ball from his shoelaces as he finds the goalkeeper off his post and what do you know, it's Wazza's day as the ball calmly bounces into the net and Manchester United are ahead! It was Wayne's day as not only did he score the goal which probably is Premier League's goal of the season but he also etched his mark in United's history as the third highest goal scorer displacing the legendary Jack Rowley :) It was also wonderful to see Juan Mata play in his preferred position and Shinji Kagawa making a start. Rooney doubled the lead and sealed 3 points for David Moyes! All in all 'Wazza day it was!' GGMU :) PS: Get well soon, Robin Van Persie.

Robin Van Persie's hat-trick lifted the gloom surrounding Manchester United and Manager David Moyes as the English side beat Olympiakos Piraeus 3-0 to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit and reach the Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday. United, mounting a dismal defence of their Premier League title in Moyes's first campaign since replacing Alex Ferguson, kept alive their last remaining hope of lifting a trophy this season. Asked to show character by their manager, United responded with Van Persie showing a clinical edge that has been missing of late while the recalled Ryan Giggs was also instrumental on his first start since late January. Van Persie began the Old Trafford comeback with a 25th-minute penalty, awarded after he had been shoved in the back by Jose Holebas. The Dutchman levelled the tie on aggregate in first- half stoppage time, steering in Wayne Rooney's cross and Van Persie completed his hat-trick with a free kick six minutes after the break that left Olympiakos keeper Roberto rooted ...
he New Manchester United contract Wayne Rooney signed last month has made him the fourth-highest earning player in the world, according to France Football magazine. • MP: Rooney wages justified Rooney, 28, put pen to paper on a five-and-a-half year deal at Old Trafford in February that reportedly took him beyond the 300,000-pound-a-week barrier, making him the first player to do so in the Premier League. Estimated to make 24 million euros in total this year by the weekly French magazine, Rooney's annual salary of 19 million euros is actually the highest of any player in the top 20 of the rankings, though he still trails the top three, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, due to his lower endorsement revenue. Messi, who topped the chart for three successive years before being deposed by David Beckham in 2013, weighs in at a global total of 41 million euros. A sizeable 26 million euros of that comes from endorsements, with boot supplier adidas providing him with some eight million annually alone. R ...
Diego Maradona thrust his "Hand Of God" into the air and smiled in approval. If there was a moment that confirmed Liverpool's right to be taken seriously as Premier League title contenders, this was it. The legendary Argentina World Cup winner, sharp suited and sporting deafeningly loud ear-rings, was in attendance in Old Trafford's directors' box on a day of huge and contrasting significance for Manchester United and Liverpool. And Maradona, looking like a well-dressed pirate, will have savoured the quality in Liverpool's display on a day when the secret was well and truly out. Manager Brendan Rodgers, in the shadow of Chelsea and Manchester City, has shaped a side that can win their first title since 1990. Maradona will have appreciated the movement and menace of his fellow South American Luis Suarez, whose partnership with Daniel Sturridge shone a harsh light on the seemingly dysfunctional footballing relationship between Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie. The Argentine will have noted the relentless w ...
United slipping into mediocrity 17 March By Zoran Milosavljevic Conceding three penalties to Liverpool at Old Trafford would have usually triggered a furore among Manchester United fans, players and management under any other circumstances but for the humiliating manner in which they lost Sunday's derby. Not even the fiery Wayne Rooney questioned referee Mark Clattenburg's decisions on an afternoon the England striker described as one of the worst days he ever had in football, after a crushing 3-0 defeat left United with only a forlorn hope of finishing in the top four in the Premier League. Rooney's post-match comments underlined a gulf in class between the two teams this season, with the balance of power swinging back towards a Liverpool side transformed by Brendan Rodgers from mid-table underachievers into title contenders. United, shockingly for their fans, seem to be heading in the opposite direction - at least in the short term. The mauling United suffered at the hands of their bitter rivals actuall ...

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that Manager David Moyes was influential in his decision to stay at the club. The 28-year-old signed a new contract with the Premier League champions last month that will see him remain at Old Trafford until June 2019. "David Moyes's influence on me signing the new contract was absolutely massive," he told The Mirror. "Certain issues did arise last season that I wasn't happy about. But out of respect to Sir Alex Ferguson, I won't talk about what went on because as far as I'm concerned it's all in the past. "When David Moyes took over, he made it clear to me straight away that he wanted to draw a line under last season. And the key thing was when he assured me that he had total belief in me. Just as important, he also told me things that I probably didn't want to hear. "He told me I had lost something from my game and that I needed to get back to basics. The boss reminded me about the player I was. He wanted to know what had happened to all my aggression. ...

Manchester United face Liverpool this weekend in one of global football’s most enduring rivalries and, as ever, there is far more than pride at stake for each team. Three points for Liverpool at Old Trafford can reinforce their position as genuine contenders for the Premier League title, with the Reds having ascended into second position, ahead of Arsenal by virtue of goal difference. Manchester United may have already relinquished the trophy they won last season, and their focus has now moved to secure a place in the coveted top four positions. Victory against Liverpool would go some way to achieving that for David Moyes’ side. There is, of course, also the added incentive for Manchester United to quash any title ambitions Liverpool may have and, in doing so, remain on top of the English football perch to which they have climbed, with 20 league championships to the 18 won by their greatest of rivals. This rivalry is one that means more to Wayne Rooney than most, with the born and bred Evertonian havi ...

A Rafael header was tipped onto the crossbar before United took the lead when Phil Jones powered in a header. The Baggies exerted some pressure in search of an equaliser and striker Victor Anichebe angled a shot wide. However, United secured the win when Wayne Rooney headed in from close range and Danny Welbeck provided a cool finish after a well-worked move.

Wayne Rooney, Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic all echo the manager's bullishness that a fourth European Cup is not beyond United despite the side standing sixth in the Premier League, 11 points from qualifying for next season's contest. To tout themselves as able to win a tournament that includes the holders, Bayern Munich, who are more formidable this year, and the gilded Barcelona team of Lionel Messi, Xavi and Neymar, sounds fantastical. Yet this is a cup competition and Moyes spoke at the weekend of "doing a Liverpool", who triumphed nine years ago as underdogs, while Chelsea in 2012 also somehow pulled off the trick of lifting the trophy when deeply unfancied. By their own standards, Manchester United are officially in a mess It's been said before, but we might as well say it again: What has happened to last year's Premier League champions? The fact that Charlie Adam banged in two goals in a 2-1 win that made Stoke City the eighth side to down United tells you what kind of a state David Moyes' side are in. Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie all started, but United might as well have fielded the reserves for all the difference it made. The title went up in smoke weeks ago, but things have gone way beyond that point now - the way things are going, they'll be lucky to earn a Europa League spot. Unless there is a marked response at Old Trafford to end these continuing relapses, United's run of 17 consecutive seasons enjoying Champions League football - a greater number than any other club in Europe, including Real Madrid - is about to come to an end.
Mesut Ozil ranks third in the world in shirt sales so far for the 2013/14 season. The £42.4m that Arsenal spent on the German international sent shockwaves through Europe and beyond as Arsenal fans flocked to the club’s shops to buy the new Arsenal kit adorning the name ‘Ozil’ with number 11. Mesut Ozil has kept up his reputation as the assist king – picking up eight assists in 19 Premier League starts. The 25-year- old has also netted four goals, and has completed 55 key passes this term – over 20 more than Arsenal’s next best. article continues below Despite Ozil being a big hit this season, La Liga duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi naturally occupy the first two spots as both are household names worldwide – selling shirts galore in worldwide, in places such as South America, Asia and the Middl ...
There is a new sense of optimism in the Manchester United camp ahead of Saturday's match at Stoke City. Tuesday evening's 2-0 win against Cardiff City at Old Trafford not only earned the Red Devils a welcome victory - only their second in seven league and cup outings - the match also featured an impressive debut by club record signing Juan Mata, plus the return of star strikers Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney from lingering injuries. Spain midfielder Mata, who moved to United from Premier League rivals Chelsea last weekend for a club-record fee of 37.1 million pounds ($61.2 million), was applauded off the pitch on Tuesday after being substituted after 85 minutes. Netherlands striker Van Persie, who missed 11 matches due to a thigh problem, started against Cardiff and headed United in front after only six minutes. England forward Rooney came on as a 63rd-minute replacement for Van Persie after a five-match absence with groin trouble. Ashley Young scored a second for United just after the hour mark. Unite ...
Talksport Exclusive Louis Saha has told talkSPORT Manchester United will not make the top four despite signing Juan Mata from Chelsea and Wayne Rooney penning a new contract. Spanish winger Mata's club-record £37million arrival has got Red Devils fans excited but their former French striker warned the club not to rely only on the midfielder to help the ailing side. Asked if the Premier League holders, who are seventh in the table, could yet make a Champions League place, Saha told Drivetime: "I doubt it. Obviously there will be changes. Mata will bring them something new but it will take them a big, big run to catch the fourth spot." But the ex-France international added that Mata's arrival and Rooney's extension indicates things are improving at Old Trafford. "The style of play is not right and a player like Mata is going to have the same sort of impact as [Mesut] Ozil did for Arsenal. I really hope straight away it's a good thing for the team because they desperately need some creativity in there. "Roo ...
Manchester United’s good week continues, with Goal reporting that they are set to welcome four of their key players back from injury during Tuesday’s fixture with Cardiff City. The Cardiff game is also likely to see the debut of new signing Juan Mata, meaning that United fans may see a much changed side from recent weeks. To get two away victories in three days in the Premier League is a good return for us. "Danny Welbeck couldn't score very often last season, but he looks like he will do it every time now. Manchester United: Title rivals will be nervous as momentum builds Manchester United did not make a complete case for normal service being resumed by beating Arsenal - but a glance at recent results and the Premier League table suggests the obituaries can stay locked in the drawer. The noise levels around Old Trafford, and the joy that greeted the final whistle, were an accurate measure of this game's significance to United and David Moyes. United needed three points to stop Arsenal extending their lead over them to difficult, if not quite impossible, proportions. Their still relatively new manager needed a victory in a game of such status after previous opportunities against Chelsea, Liverpool and -desperately and embarrassingly -Manchester City yielded only one point. And both duly arrived courtesy of Robin Van Persie's soaring 27th minute header from Wayne Rooney's corner. If the striker is, as Arsene Wenger suggests, still "an Arsenal man" then he has a funny way of showing it. Van Persie scored in bo ...

FULL MATCH UPDATE BETWEEN Manchester United 0-0 Arsenal 90’ MATCH SUMMARY It wasn't perhaps a classic in the mould of past Manchester United vs. Arsenal clashes, but there was no denying the battling endeavour of both sets of players, with league leaders Arsenal finding themselves enveloped in a war of attrition with a proud United side keen to show they're still serious about retaining their Premier League title. From the off, the red shirts got stuck into their opponents with Phil Jones enjoying a supreme first half as he looked to drive forward play from midfield, and tackling tirelessly in defence. Robin Van Persie gave United the lead on 26 minutes, powering a header beyond Szczesny from Wayne Rooney's corner, and the home side deserved it, having comfortably stifled their visitor's creativity - £47 million-man Mesut Ozil had a particularly ineffectual afternoon. Nemanja Vidic had been bullying Olivier Giroud in the first-half, but was taken off at half-time after being caught by David De Gea's kn ...

Wayne Rooney has cast doubt on Arsenal’s Premier League title chances. After extending their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions with Tuesday night’s goalless Champions League draw with Real Sociedad, Manchester United’s focus is now trained on Sunday’s showdown with Arsene Wenger’s men. Despite negative pre-season expectations around a club that has won nothing since 2005, Arsenal have shot out of the blocks. But Rooney is remaining cautious about their threat. For there have been plenty of times in the past when Arsenal appeared capable of mounting a sustained challenge, only for it to peter out when the pressure starts to be applied later in the campaign. Wayne Rooney sai ...

I watched Manchester United 3-1 victory at Craven Cottage and witnessed Wayne Rooney destroy Fulham in 13 minutes with endeavour, commitment and a touch of class. I keep saying he's still the best team player in the Premier League by some distance. He made the first, scored the third and was so involved in the play he even deflected the ball past his own keeper for Fulham's consolation goal.
