Samir Nasri scored from 25 yards after the break before Pablo Zabaleta fired in from close range. Earlier Joe Hart tipped Gervinho's strike wide before touching Kostas Manolas's header onto the post. Bayern beat CSKA Moscow 3-0 to confirm City's qualification. It completed a remarkable turnaround for the Premier League champions, who looked to be heading out of the competition after failing to win any of their first four games. However, a 3-2 home win over German champions Bayern, which included a Sergio Aguero hat-trick, kept alive their hopes of making the last 16 - and they took full advantage with a stunning display in Rome. Nasri writes his name into Manchester City folklore COMMENT: The Frenchman smashed an unstoppable shot from 25 yards beyond Morgan De Sanctis before setting up Pablo Zabaleta to seal a famous win for Manuel Pellegrini's men Dec 11, 2014 00:45:00By Liam Twomey As Manchester City took to the Stadio Olympico pitch for their date with destiny, Manuel Pellegrini knew he would need a new hero. Only twice since Sergio Aguero’s arrival from Atletico Madrid in July 2011 had City started a football match without any of Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure, David Silva or their Argentine superstar. On both occasions – at the Etihad against West Brom in the Premier League in May last year and Blackburn in the FA Cup in January – they had won, but Rudi Garcia’s Roma on home turf were always going to present a starkly different challenge. Such are the resources available to Pellegrini that City still boasted arguably the stronger XI on paper but, as the Premier League champions have repeatedly found to their cost in Eur ...

London: Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini praised his side`s all-round display after they overcame a disallowed penalty appeal and a red card shown to Eliaquim Mangala to win 3-0 away to Southampton on Sunday. Victory saw reigning Premier League champions City climb above Southampton into second place and move to within six points of leaders Chelsea. “We beat a very good team,” Pellegrini told Sky Sports. “They were second in the table and deserved that position.” Yaya Toure opened the scoring in the 51st minute at St Mary`s Stadium before centre-back Mangala was sent off for a second bookable offence. Goals in the final 10 minutes from substitute Frank Lampard and Gael Clichy secured victory for the visitors. Black Friday was turned inky blue for one City super fan - after Sergio Aguero autographed his back so it could be turned into a tatoo. Alan Smith, 55, already has six tributes to his club emblazoned across his body, including a full back celebration of City’s 3-2 win against Queen Park Rangers in May 2012 - the result which gave the club its first Premier League title. The body art is topped by the City badge, complete with the Latin slogan ‘Superbia In Proelia’ - or ‘Pride in Battle’. It also features portraits of Aguero, skipper Vincent Kompany, ex-manager Roberto Mancini and keeper Joe Hart. So after the striker’s book signing became an impromptu back signing, Alan high-tailed it to the tattoo parlour - and Aguero’s name has been freshly tattooed alongside his famous face.

Chelsea maintain lead as Toure rescues Man City: Diego Costa scored again as Chelsea established a seven-point lead at the Premier League summit by comfortably beating ten-man West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. Costa opened the scoring in the 11th minute, leaping into the air to control Oscar’s left-wing cross on his chest and then slamming a side-foot volley past Ben Foster for his 11th goal of the campaign. Eden Hazard added a second in the 25th minute, smuggling a deflected shot beneath Foster from Cesc Fabregas’s corner, before West Brom’s Claudio Yacob was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Costa. Anybody who can talk to Pellecrying you read this and let him know what football says. Yesterday, the noisy half of Manchester (mis)led by one Mournuel Pellegrini needed a Chelsea legend to help salvage a point...to help score their first ever goal against the Blues at the Etihad Stadium since, well, who cares to recall? What relief Pellegrini (Gawd blimey, grin? Nope, what grin? Does that specimen ever grin? Pellecryni!!!), the Chilean Premier League upstart must be feeling now as he hailed OUR Frank Lampard a "great professional" for sparing his blushes in his post-game mourning - a game his bulky captain, Vincent Kompany, and co. must have probably mistaken for a WBO/IBF/WBC/IBO World Heavyweight unification title bout, or an MMA championship bout, and quite literally gave it the fight of their lives. Well, all is fair that ends well I guess, and we know there's only how long Kompany and co. could fight that hard before another red mist befall them as a certain Argentine, Pablo Zabaleta would learn. Frank Lampard stepped off the substitutes’ bench to score against his former club and salvage a 1-1 draw for Manchester City at home to Chelsea. The eagerly-awaited showdown at the Etihad Stadium provided few clear chances as defences dominated, but it sprang to life in the second half after Pablo Zabaleta was red carded for a second bookable offence in the 66th minute. Andre Schurrle tapped in an Eden Hazard cross five minutes later to set Chelsea on course for a fifth successive Premier League win, but they were denied by Lampard. The midfielder steered an excellent finish into the bottom corner from James Milner’s pass and, although he did not celebrate, his team-mates and fans were jubilant as City stayed within five points of the leaders. City gave a debut to Eliaquim Mangala, their £32million signing from Porto brought in to add greater depth at centre-back, but his job was made much easier playing alongside his irrepressible captain Vincent Kompany. Juventus are one of several Italian clubs ready to take Nastasic, 21, back to Serie A and Pellegrini has told the player he should move on for the sake of his career because Vincent Kompany, Martin Demichelis, new signing Eliaquim Mangala and Dedryck Boyata are all ahead of him. Manchester City agree deal for Mangala . French daily newspaper L’Equipe is reportingthat Manchester City are on the verge of signing French defender Eliaquim Mangala from FC Porto. The Citizens have been hot on the trail of the highly rated stopper for quite a while, and they seem to have finally decided to act. According to L’Equipe, the Premier League side have had a €40 million bid accepted by Porto, meaning all that’s left is to agree personal terms with the player. Manchester City officials plan to pair the Frenchman with Vincent Kompany at the heart of defence at the Etihad and they appear to be close to wrapping up the transfer. Eliaquim Mangala has been at Estadio do Dragao since the summer of 2011, making 51 league appearances and scoring 6 goals. Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany has revealed he’s been “close” to Barcelona in the past but insists he has no plans to trade the Premier League champions for the La Liga giants this summer. Barcelona have long admired the Belgium international and have been strongly tipped to firm up their interest this year following the retirement of long-serving centre-back Carles Puyol. Kompany, who has been an integral player for City since his £6m switch from Hamburg in 2008, admits he has had contact with the Catalan club in previous years but says he has no offer on the table at the moment. The 28-year-old told Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo: “I’ve been close to signing for Barcelona on a few occasions – there were contacts – but in recent times, officially, I can assure you that there has not been anything that I know of. “I have a contract in place with Manchester City, I’m very happy, we have won the Premier League and we have a serious and attractive project. England unlucky to go out Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho has come to the defence of England's World Cup campaign, saying Roy Hodgson's side "played well" and are unfortunate to be going out. Italy's 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica means England have failed to reach the knock-out stages for the first time since 1958. Vincent Kompany, captain of Belgium and Premier League champions Manchester City, also expressed regret about England's exit, which affects his teammates Joe Hart and James Milner. And former England manager Fabio Capello, now coach of Russia, said he thought there was "a little bit of injustice" about England's exit. Mourinho said England were "not lucky" in the draw which pitted them with two other former World Champions in Italy and Uruguay, and they were also unfortunate in the way the games turned out. "From the best three or four matches in this competition, England was present in two. It means that England did well, played well, competed well," he said. England "was not afraid of Uruguay, was not ...

City have been crowned Premier League champions after beating West Ham 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium. A goal in each half from Samir Nasri and Vincent Kompany was enough to see off the Hammers and ensure Liverpool’s win over Newcastle counted for nothing. It’s the first time City have won two trophies in one season since 1970, with Manuel Pellegrini’s side timing their sprint to the finish line perfectly following five successive victories. Now Blues around the world can start their celebrations in earnest with a second title in just three seasons. This was not a day for the feint- hearted. City fans have long been used to the last-day dramas the Club has put them through, with two promotions and one relegation on the final day during the 1980s; another relegation and successive promotions in the 1990s before the relative calm that would follow for more than a decade. Then came the last day games against QPR and then West Ham to decide the title – that’s eight games that shaped the history of the Bl ...

Yaya Toure, is Footballer of the Year There is only one obstacle in the way of Luis Suarez doing the double in the footballer of the year awards. Only one thing that might stop him adding the Football Writers’ gong to the Professional Footballer’s Association trophy he picked up last Sunday. And it is a sizeable one: Yaya Toure. For me, however brilliant Suarez has been, however much he has driven Liverpool by sheer force of will (plus a few spectacular goals) into contention, however many goals the Uruguayan has scored, Toure is the player of the season. If Manchester City finally wake up and accept the gift which has been offered them by their rivals to pick up their second Premier League title in three years, Toure will be the man to thank. He has been instrumental in their late charge for the top, his return to the side has transformed a team which seemed resigned to being out of the running and turned them back into favourites. You only have to look at Toure’s performance against Crystal Palace ...

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BELGIUM`S "Golden Generation". Not too long ago, Belgium wasn’t exactly the type of team you’d look forward to watching during a World Cup. They didn’t usually play exciting football, they didn’t field the world’s best players and you surely didn’t expect them to go far in a tournament. The World Cup in 1986 was merely an exception to the rule. As a fan, you were hoping for a few draws and maybe a victory in the group stage. But much has changed since then. These days, Belgium have a team full of highly rated talent. Think of players such as Vincent Kompany, Axel Witsel, Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard. The Rode Duivels have truly developed into a team to be reckoned with. How did this come about? What are some of the underlying reasons for Belgium's rise in eminence? The Premier League Lads Constitutive to today’s Rode Duivels team is the contingent of players currently playing the Premier League, including Eden Hazard, Jan Vertonghen, Vincent Kompany and Romelu L ...
EA SPORTS EPL Team of the Season ft. 3 Liverpool & Chelsea stars, 2 Arsenal & Man City men [Picture] Everyone’s favourite football console game-makers EA SPORTS have compiled their data from this season’s Premier League campaign to announce their team of the year. EA SPORTS’ team comes after the announcement of the PFA team of the season which was made at the start of the week. According to the console game-makers, three players from Liverpool and Chelsea make their starting XI, along with two players apiece from Arsenal and Man City. Everton are the only other team to have a player make the cut. Unfortunately the EA SPORTS team does feature a fudge, with Man City’s Vincent Kompany placed at right-back even thought the Belgian is undoubtedly a centre-half. There are several difference in the EA SPORTS team than compared with the PFA’s, as Southampton’s Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw are both left out, while Chelsea’s Gary Cahill and Everton’s Seamus Coleman are both cut too.

Man City: 44 years between winning the title in 1968 and 2012 For older Man City fans, images of Mike Summerbee and Francis Lee holding aloft the league crown in 1968 will remain, but for the new generation it is pictures of Vincent Kompany raising the Premier League trophy that will endure. Manchester City’s rise to the upper echelons of English and European football has been rapid. Just four years after the Abu Dhabi United Group bought the club, they were crowned English champions, bringing to an end ...

Fitness worries for City 14 April By Reuters Long considered favourites in an absorbing Premier League title race, Manchester City no longer have control over their destiny and must also sweat on the fitness of Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany for the closing weeks of their campaign. A 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at an emotional Anfield, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, saw City fall seven points behind their hosts on Sunday and needing the Merseysiders to slip up to overhaul them. City's run to the Capital One (League) Cup title and the quarter-finals of the FA Cup means for the past few months they have trailed in the points tally but two games in hand over their title rivals has kept them regarded as favourites. However, Sunday's defeat means that edge has dissipated and they must hope Liverpool fail to collect maximum points in one of their remaining matches against Norwich City, Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United, even if the 2012-13 champions win their remaining s ...

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany overcame an injury scare to take his place in the starting line-up for his side's top-of-the-table Premier League clash at Liverpool on Sunday.
A goal in each half from Edin Dzeko and late third from Yaya Toure settled the 167th Manchester Derby that the Blues dominated from the first minute onwards to record a Premier League double over their old rivals - and break several club records in the process. With so much at stake and the Blues eating into the first of their three games in hand over leaders Chelsea, Manuel Pellegrini opted for a starting XI with pace and plenty of attacking options. Jesus Navas and Gael Clichy were recalled to patrol the flanks while skipper Vincent Kompany and Edin Dzeko returned to the team after a suspension for the former and illness to the latter.

This season may not have gone to plan at Old Trafford for David Moyes, but Tuesday night's Manchester Derby gives United the chance to restore some pride and claim the bragging rights until next season. But in order to do that, the champions will need to overcome a Manchester City side who have overwhelmed a host of Premier League sides this season. Manuel Pellegrini has enviable quality at his disposal in a number of areas and, as a result, the Etihad Stadium outfit dominate our combined Manchester Derby XI. Nevertheless, our goalkeeper comes from the red side of the Manchester divide. David De Gea has conceded more goals than Joe Hart this season, but has been called into action more often, featuring in more games and making more saves than the England No.1, who came in for scrutiny earlier in the seaso At right-back, the ever-dependable Pablo Zabaleta gets the nod ahead of Rafael after another season of consistent performances. The Argentine became one of the first names on the team sheet under Roberto ...
KEY BATTLES: Wayne Rooney can check Manchester City's title charge The Red Devils will be gunning for revenge after their 4-1 defeat to the Citizens at the Etihad back in September. Manchester United go into Tuesday’s derby against Manchester City a whopping 18 points off top. With their title hopes gone, some Man United fans are left praying for Liverpool not to win their first Premier League title. Some would even go as far as wishing victory for Manchester City tomorrow night. 1:Wayne Rooney v VINCENT KOMPANY Rooney goes into the match in a rich vein of form. The striker has flourished for the Red Devils ever since he signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract last month. He moved up to third in the club's all-time top scorers list with a brace on Saturday, the first of which came from almost 50 yards. Kompany will need to use all his strength and pace to keep the England striker quiet. 2:Marouane Fellaini v Yaya Toure Toure warmed up for the derby with a well-taken hat-trick in City's 5-0 win over F ...

Chelsea's Premier League title hopes were dented by a shock 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa which saw them reduced to nine men. Delph scored the winner for Aston Villa as they beat Chelsea. ENDWorrall: Blues see red • Delaney: Three Things The second-half dismissal of Willian for two yellow cards left them vulnerable before Fabian Delph met a Marc Albrighton cross with a backheel finish in the 82nd minute to secure all three points. Delph had the chance to score a second for Villa in the dying moments, but struck the crossbar before Ramires and Jose Mourinho were also given their marching orders, Ramires for a lunging challenge on the ankle of Karim El Ahmadi and Mourinho for dissent. That leaves Chelsea in danger of being overtaken by Manchester City, who shrugged off a 10th-minute red card for captain Vincent Kompany as they secured a 2-0 win at Hull to go second in the Premier League, six points behind Chelsea with three games in hand. Manchester City recovered from an early captain Vincent Kompany sending off to beat Hull City at the KC Stadium on Saturday Goals from David Silva and Eden Dzeko helped Manuel Pellegrini’s side seal victory and move up to second in the Premier League log with Liverpool and Arsenal both set for Sunday kick-off. Referee Lee Mason issued Kompany the marching order for bundling over Nikica Jelavic as the Croatian ran towards goal ten minutes after the start. The hosts failed to create clear-cut goal-scoring opportunities despite maintaining a relatively larger possession Vincent Kompany Distraught After Referee Lee Mason’s Sending Off. Many had thought City were in for a third consecutive loss, following Kompany’s dismissal. But Spaniard, Silva, had other ideas of his own; giving goalkeeper Alan McGregor little opportunity to rescue his swerving short from the edge of the area four minutes later. He would later turn provider for Eden Dzeko, whose left-footed shot sealed all three points for the Manchest ...

Manchester City overcame the early dismissal of Vincent Kompany to beat Hull City 2-0 and keep up the pressure on Premier League leaders Chelsea. Captain Kompany saw red in the opening 10 minutes on Saturday after hauling down Nikica Jelavic as the striker looked set to race through on goal, but David Silva's superb curling effort handed the visitors the lead just four minutes later.
Watching Manchester City play Barcelona on Wednesday night, fans of every other club in the Premier League must have been choking with envy. Sure City lost, sure they failed across two legs to match opponents who were nowhere near their best, sure they are not yet a force to dominate Europe. But one thing we can be confident of after that display in the Nou Camp: there cannot be a better defender in the land than Vincent Kompany. My, he was magnificent on Wednesday night. Powerful, intelligent, controlled, he was everything you want of a centre back. And what a leader too, his every contribution oozing the kind of selfless team ethic that insists others follow. There was one moment when, assessing correctly what was about to happen, he stepped in to intercept a through ball and strode forward before delivering an inch perfect pass of his own that looked as if he were channelling the spirit of Bobby Moore. There is no team in England that would not be improved hugely by his presence in their starting elev ...
Messi’s neat strike saves the day 13 March By Tim Hanlon Barcelona - Lionel Messi struck to end Manchester City's dreams of a famous comeback as Barcelona beat the English club 2-1 at the Nou Camp on Wednesday to reach the Champions League quarter-finals 4-1 on aggregate. Barca looked far from the classic team who lifted the trophy in 2009 and 2011 but a stuttering version under Gerardo Martino that had lost two of their last three games was still far too strong for the Premier League club. City, who lost the first leg of the last-16 tie 2-0 at home, were a constant threat to the Spanish champions, but they were left to rue missed chances by David Silva, Samir Nasri and Pablo Zabaleta. Captain Vincent Kompany levelled for the visitors on the night with a tap-in in the 89th minute, but Dani Alves responded by sweeping home the winner in the first minute of stoppage time. City had been reduced to 10 men by then after Zabaleta was shown a second yellow card for dissent in the 78th minute. The Argentine def ...
Manchester City won't fear anybody next year, says Vincent Kompany • Captain believes City can match Barcelona despite exit • Fears for Agüero after recurrence of hamstring injury Manchester City's elimination from the Champions League was accompanied by fresh concerns about Sergio Agüero's fitness but a firm declaration from their captain, Vincent Kompany, that the club would not allow the most disappointing week of their season to spill over into the Premier League. Manuel Pellegrini's team now travel to Hull City for the early Saturday kick-off with Kompany admitting they "had nothing left in the tank" at the end of a 2-1 defeat against Barcelona, completing a 4-1 aggregate loss and exit at the last-16 stage. Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the second half and Pablo Zabaleta had been sent off before Kompany equalised in the 89th minute. Dani Alves quickly restored the home side's lead on a night when Agüero was taken off at half-time with a recurrence of his hamstring troubles. "It is very ea ...

This upcoming match between Manchester City and Chelsea at the Etihad really could not get much juicier. City will begin the day three points ahead of Chelsea and no worse than two points behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table when this match kicks off. Then there's the whole business of what went down with these sides at Stamford Bridge in October. Joe Hart made a three-point error, taking one from his own side and handing Chelsea two more than they expected. And Jose Mourinho, in his typically understated and classy style, took the party where it did not need to go. City and Chelsea have more in common than they might care to admit. Joe Hart's early season struggles aside, both teams have great 'keepers. In Vincent Kompany and John Terry, both sides boast a porch-clearing back who makes opposing strikers think twice before lunging into the box. More than anything, though, City and Chelsea boast midfielders who can change games without scoring a single goal. You know the names. Yaya Toure, ...
Lawro's January shopping list Back at Christmas, we asked Lawro for his Premier League shopping list - who needed who, and why? A month on, many of the deals have been struck, but there are some clubs who have not made much of an inroad into the market yet. Here are a few choice cuts from Lawro's list: Arsenal - they need a striker. Lawro said: "Why not try to go for it in January and try to get whoever they are looking at in then? They undoubtedly have the money and the worst case scenario is that if the new man does not settle in straight away then he will be ready by next August rather than trying to settle in then." Everton - "They clearly do not need any drastic surgery to their squad but they could do with another striker." Man City - "Their squad looks very strong in every area apart from centre-back where they have problems whenever Vincent Kompany is injured. "Martin Demichelis has not convinced me and it is clear the manager Manuel Pellegrini does not fancy Joleon Lescott much either."
Vincent Kompany refused to talk about the Premier League title despite Manchester City going goal-crazy again on their way to the summit.
Tottenham 1-5 Manchester City: Pellegrini's men go top after eighth straight win Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, Yaya Toure. Stevan Jovetic & Vincent Kompany were all on target as Spurs, who saw Danny Rose sent off, were swept aside at White Hart Lane. Sergio Aguero scored his 50th Premier League goal as Manchester City beat Tottenham 5-1 to go top of the Premier League. Aguero's neat finish after 15 minutes set City on their way during an impressive first half, which was dampened somewhat when the forward limped off. But the visitors put the game to bed with a blistering second half. Danny Rose was sent off after he was adjudged to have fouled Edin Dzeko and Yaya Toure slotted in the spot kick six minutes after the restart. Dzeko then got in on the act himself from close range and though Etienne Capoue pulled on back for Tottenham, Stevan Jovetic's first league goal for City and Vincent Kompany's late effort confirmed their eighth successive league win and condemned Tottenham to their first Premier League def ...

Both sides are coming into this game to show they have Champion or Champions League class after suffering disappointing defeats to North East opposition on their last Premier League outing. Manchester City will feel they need to keep up their 100% record, though they sit in eighth place they still remain favourites with the bookmakers to regain the Premier League title given how tight the table is. Spurs on the other hand are a very difficult side to break time, yet have found goals hard to come by this season as they sit fractionally above City in the league table. On the injury front, it may be a week too early for City’s captain Vincent Kompany to come back into the side as he continues his recovery from a thigh injury whilst David Silva isn’t expected to be available for selection for at least another ten days as he has a calf injury. Fernando Torres snatched a late winner in a pulsating match at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea beat fellow title hopefuls Manchester City 2-1 to climb to second in the Premier League. Torres had earlier set up Andre Schurrle brilliantly to make it 1-0 to the Blues after 33 minutes, only for Sergio Aguero to power in a superb leveller in the 49th minute. Both sides had chances in an exciting finale but it looked like they would have to settle for a point apiece until Torres capitalised on a defensive mix-up between Matija Nastasic and Joe Hart to seal victory. Jose Mourinho kept faith with Torres up front following his two goals against Schalke and Chelsea began brightly as they looked to test a defence marshalled by Nastasic and debutant Martin Demichelis in the absence of injured captain Vincent Kompany. However, after one anxious moment when Gary Cahill volleyed over the top as the offside flag stayed down from an Oscar cross, Manuel Pellegrini's side soon settled and began to enjoy the majority of possessio ...

I will be supporting Belgium to win the World Cup.Look at this squad: In goal, Belgium have the choice between Simon Mignolet, who has had an impressive start to his first season for Liverpool, and the up and coming Thibault Courtois, who is currently on loan from Chelsea at Atletico Madrid. In defence, there is the size and experience of captain Vincent Kompany who will play alongside Tomas Vermaelen and Jan Vertonghen. In midfield, there is pace on the wings with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Everton’s Kevin Mirallas. There is also the choice of Tottenham’s Nacer Chadli, boy wonder Adnan Januzaj and Axel Witsel, who completed a £32 million move to FC Zenit St Petersburg. The centre of midfield will be dominated by Moussa Dembele and Manchester United’s Marouane Fellani. Up front, there is the mouth-watering pair of Christain Benteke and Romelu Lukaku who are currently leading scorers in the Premier League.
Vincent Kompany (4) also proved a rock at the back for Pellegrini's men, with the City skipper successfully marshalling Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck throughout, hardly giving United's strikeforce a kick during the 90 minutes. Belgium international Kompany is joined at centre-back by Dejan Lovren (4), with the Croatian proving to be the match winner in Southampton's impressive 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday as he rose highest to head home from a corner. The goalkeeping spot in Goal's Premier League team of the week is occupied by Cardiff City's David Marshall (4.5), with the Scotland international in supreme form during his side's last-gasp 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday. Leighton Baines ' (4.5) free kick heroics for Everton against West Ham sees him nail down the left-back slot in Goal's team, while Aston Villa right-back for the day Leandro Bacuna (3.5) is in after his solid showing in the 1-0 win over Norwich. BPL TOP 5 EXPENSIVE TEAMS: 1. Manchester City - £380m Manchester City spent a club record fee to complete the signing of Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero in the summer of 2011 and, after an instrumental role in delivering the title in his first season with the club, the Argentine remains the most highly-valued player on the books at the Etihad Stadium. According to Transfermarkt, Aguero's present market value of £39.5 million places him at the top of Manchester City's rankings, although he is closely followed by fleet-footed Spaniard David Silva. City spent £25 million to acquire Silva from Valencia, and his value has soared since his arrival in Manchester, with the 27-year-old worth 54 percent more now than he was upon arrival almost three years ago. Manchester City have two other players valued in excess of £30 million in Yaya Toure (£31.5m) and Vincent Kompany (£31m), making Roberto Mancini's squad the most valued in the Premier League. 2. 22 February 2013 08:47 Manchester City - Chelsea Preview: Blues look to catch Mancini's side as Benitez's men battle for second By Sam Wells With the title slipping from the current Premier League champions' grasp, the away side will look to capitalise and go within a point of the team above them with a win Roberto Mancini is likely to make several changes from the rotated side that beat Leeds 4-0 in the FA Cup as regulars Joe Hart, Gael Clichy and Edin Dzeko are all likely to replace Costil Pantilimon, Aleksandar Kolarov and Carlos Tevez. The home side could also receive a much-needed boost with captain Vincent Kompany currently striving to return from a calf injury in time for the game. If he passes a late fitness test he should return in place of Kolo Toure. Gareth Barry (knock), however, remains doubtful while Micah Richards (knee) will definitely not feature. Rafa Benitez is also set to make a variety of changes from the side that drew against Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday, as Frank ...
Roberto Mancini hopes Manchester City's 4-0 win over Leeds United that secured their place in the FA Cup sixth round is the "brodino", or soup-starter, to a comeback in their title defence. Mancini is hopeful that his captain, Vincent Kompany, will be fit for the first time in a month following a calf injury to lead this challenge. Goals from Yaya Touré and Carlos Tevez plus a Sergio Agüero double gave City a first win in four matches, though by the time Chelsea are welcomed on Sunday they could be 15 points off the pace as Manchester United play the day before. Asked if the win could help kick-start City's challenge, Mancini said: "In Italy we say a game like this is a brodino – a starter. I hope it can happen that we start to win in the Premier League again." The Italian is unfazed that his side might be 15 points behind United when Chelsea visit. "This is possible, but I think we should always be confident in ourselves, even when we're 12 points behind at this moment," he said. "We lost seven point ...
Why City want Varane - Many have pointed out Manchester City's defensive frailties this season, despite the Premier League champions conceding just 21 goals in the Premier League this year – the lowest in the league. Nevertheless, with the future of Joleon Lescott yet to be decided, not to mention injury to Vincent Kompany, defensive reinforcements have been mooted.
Southampton v Man City, 17:30 Before their match with Liverpool the reigning champions hadn’t conceded a Premier League goal in four games, and a lot of the supporters at the Etihad for their 2-2 draw with Gerrard and co went away saying they Reds were the best team to visit that year, so it is clear the away team are in decent defensive form. The Saints only have two wins in their last ten games, and if 9/2 first goalscorer with Boylesports Edin Dzeko is firing they could have to settle for a difficult day and no points. Southampton players Luke Shaw, Nathaniel Clyne, Gaston Ramirez and Guly do Prado are all possibly out, while recent signing Vegard Forren awaits his debut. Manchester City will be bolstered by the return of brothers Yaya and Kolo Toure from the Africa Cup of Nations and both Vincent Kompany and Maicon could also be available.

French sports newspaper L'Equipe has today revealed it's 2012 Team of the Year, as voted for by football journalists from around the country. Six of the aforementioned players are Spanish, which has been largely attributed to Los Rojiblancos successful defence of the European championship trophy in Poland and Ukraine in the summer. The line-up features just two Premier League stars, Vincent Kompany; club captain and defensive backbone of last season's title winners Manchester City, and Ramires; a surprise inclusion from Champions League holders Chelsea, ...

This news comes in the same week that David Silva and Yaya Toure were named on the FIFPro midfielders shortlist, Vincent Kompany was recognised with a place on the defenders list and Joe Hart was one of only five goalkeepers put forward for the accolade. Mario´s is the only new name from 2011´s forwards list and has been rewarded for an inspired Euro 2012 showing for Italy where he tied with Fernando Torres for the Golden Boot with three goals, including two in the semi-final against Germany. As we told you last week, Sergio is officially one of the deadliest strikers in Premier League history, despite only landing on these shores 18 months ago. He became City´s first 30 goal striker in a decade last season and has started this season in similarly prolific style, with 11 goals for club and country so far. Considering that the forwards list contains the names of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who are joined by Andres Iniesta in the three-man shortlist for the Ballon d´Or itself, perhaps there will ...

Manchester City star Vincent Kompany the only Premier League Player in the World Soccer magazine. -NS
Just one Premier League Player, Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany, has made it into the World Soccer Team of the Year, which has been announced today. The magazine’s XI, voted for by a team of journalists, coaches, officials and former players from around the world, is led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao and Lionel Messi, who also scooped the World Soccer Player of the Year prize. Kompany captained Manchester City last season as they claimed their first league title in 44 years at the expense of rivals Manchester United on the last day of the season. Kompany lines up alongside Philipp Lahm, Sergio Ramos and Jordi Alba in defence, with Ramos accumulating the most votes out of the four. The Belgian’s club team-mate Yaya Toure came close to earning a spot in midfield but just missed out to Andres Iniesta, Andrea Pirlo and Xavi. Exclusive – Vincent Kompany eyes another win over Man United as tonic for Champions League exit
Manchester City FC 1 vs 1 Everton - Played … - Thank you very much for joining me this evening as we took in that 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium. I've been Chris Teale, and it's been a pleasure to have your company. 90′ + 3 - FULL-TIME, and Everton take a point against the Premier League champions. That won’t help City’s title challenge, with Manchester United playing the late game against Reading. It was a game slightly low on quality and definitely low on real chances, so both teams will perhaps be glad to take a point, although Everton’s winless streak continues. 90′ + 2 - Substitution Nikica Jelavic John Heitinga (Everton) 90′ - Three minutes of added time will be played. 89′ - Free kick Everton, it bobbles away from Hart slightly but his defenders are there to get rid of the ball. Slight worry there for the England man. 88′ - Yellow Card - P. Zabaleta (Manchester City FC) 86′ - City pour forward again, but Sylvain Distin is there to head away. 84′ - Nasri draws a foul from Jelav ...
Manchester City centre-back Matija Nastasic admits that Vincent Kompany has played a big part in helping him find his feet in the Premier League.
Rafa Benitez could not inspire Chelsea to victory over Manchester City in his first game in charge and was the subject of protests from some fans in a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard has succeeded the sacked Roberto Di Matteo on an interim basis and his former connection with Liverpool has made him unpopular in London. Sections of the Chelsea support held up banners against Benitez and they also stood and applauded in the 16th minute, which was Di Matteo's shirt number in his playing days, before the game ended in a forgettable 0-0 draw. Sergio Aguero wasted the best chance of a turgid Premier League encounter in driving rain, which the visitors had the better of in the first half but the home side the second. The draw moved unbeaten champions City to within a point of new leaders Manchester United, leaving Chelsea fourth. Benitez has shored up the Blues' defence during his four days in charge but he has his work cut out to get them playing the scintillating football demanded by the watchin ...

Martin Skrtel was crowned Player of the Year for 2012 at the Northwest Football Awards on Monday night, while Martin Kelly received the Rising Star accolade. Skrtel saw off competition from Antonio Valencia of Manchester United and Vincent Kompany of Manchester City to clinch the Premier League award. It comes after he was voted Liverpool's best player in 2011-12 by fans on this website.
Roberto Mancini looked back at the referee and his assistants and shook his head in disgust but the damage was already done. Manchester City are all but out of the Champions League. For the second season running Sheikh Mansour's millions havefailed to propel the current Premier League champions beyond the group stage. Vincent Kompany was a walking embodiment of City's performance in his interview immediately after the final whistle; a mixture of confusionand apparent tiredness. Yet again, Mancini's team struggledto get going until they were kicked harshly into gear when Ajax raced into a two-goal lead. Mancini has said that a lack of experience is hurting City in Europe. When asked if he agreed with his manager's assessment, Kompany muster up only a dazed "I don't know" before reeling off the usual captain's response of learning from each match. It is true that Mario Balotelli should have had a penalty in the final seconds when he was pulled down from behind by Ricardo van Rhijn. It is true thatAleksandar ...

Manchester City centre-back Kolo Toure says he will fight for his place in the side, despite currently finding himself fourth-choice at the club. The former City captain currently finds himself below Joleon Lescott, Vincent Kompany and new signing Matija Nastasic in manager Roberto Mancini's plans. "I want to stay, I want to fight for my place," the 31-year-old told BBC Sport. Toure, who signed for the reigning Premier League champions from Arsenal in 2009, added: "I like City and this season I started every game pre-season. Having served a six-month ban for failing a drugs test last year - what Toure calls his "stupid mistake" after taking one of his wife's diet pills - the desire to succeed in the final years of his career is evident.

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has given assurances to defender Joleon Lescott, saying: "He is an important player for us." England centre-half Lescott played a key role in City's Premier League title success last season, but has been dropped for some significant fixtures this term. The 30-year-old was an unused substitute for the league matches on August 26 at Liverpool and on Saturday at Fulham, as well as the Blues' Champions League Group D opener against Real Madrid on September 18 at the Bernabeu, where summer signing Matija Nastasic was chosen ahead of him to partner captain Vincent Kompany in central defence in a 3-2 defeat. It has made for an uncertain situation for the former Everton man, although he has vowed not to "rock the boat" over the matter.

Vincent Kompany admitted Manchester City had chances to claim three points after the Premier League champions...
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is adamant that the club have started the season well despite failing to keep a clean sheet in any of their matches so far. City conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League last term with just 29 but have shipped five in three matches so far in 2012-13 and is currently fourth in the table, managing to secure a draw against Liverpool only thanks to a glaring late error from Reds defender Martin Skrtel. The club captain, however, insists that his team have got off to a good start but that their opponents are proving more challenging than last year. He told the club's official website: "We have seven points out of nine and have won the Community Shield against Chelsea so things haven’t started too badly. "We have had some really good periods in games, but there are areas we need to work a bit harder on. We're not dismantling teams at present like we were at this stage last season. "We generally give very few chances away, but when we have so far in the opening we ...

Chelsea defender Ivanovic escapes ban for Community Shield red card he Serbian will be free to face Wigan on the opening day of the Premier League season because the FA changed their rules two years ago after an incident where both Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes were sent off in a pre-season tournament in Amsterdam, and both served three-match bans that ran into the English season. The rule change covers all non-competitive pre-season fixtures, which includes the Community Shield. Additionally, yellow cards shown to Frank Lampard, Ramires, Ryan Bertrand, Ashley Cole and Manchester City players Costel Pantilimon, Stefan Savic and Vincent Kompany will not count towards their tally for the domestic season.

Vincent Kompany set to be fit for start of Manchester City's Premier League season [Mail]
Nemanja Vidic was sorely missed. Jonny Evans proved an able deputy, but the Northern Ireland international has some way to go before he can command the same status and influence as his Serbian team-mate. Rio Ferdinand, of course, is a vastly experienced centre-back, as good as any in the world in his prime, who has successfully adapted his game having initially struggled following the flurry of injuries that seemed to affect the athleticism and pace he once boasted. He is, however, three years older than Vidic, the undisputed leader of the United back four, and will be as happy as anyone to see his old partner return. VIVA LA VIDA It must have been difficult for the 30-year-old to watch the man who can conceivably be labelled his direct counterpart, Vincent Kompany, produce a series of inspirational performances to lead Manchester City to the Premier League title. Paul Scholes returned from retirement to drag United back to the summit of the table; Vidic's comeback might have helped to keep them there. Th ...

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany says his side deserved to win the Premier League title after a final day of drama.
Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany's nerves were shredded after his side two goals in injury time to beat QPR 3-2 and win the Barclays Premier League.
So goodbye David Pleat. Goodbye to your jig at Maine Road after you sent Manchester City down in 1983. Goodbye Ricky Villa and your slalom run that ripped the FA Cup away from City in 1981. Goodbye Paul Hendrie, the giant-killer who scored the winner when Halifax Town cut City down. Goodbye Steve Daley, Bernardo Corradi, Lee Bradbury and all the others who carried the torch of mediocrity and disappointment for many of the last 44 years. And goodbye to John Benson, Jimmy Frizzell, Mel Machin, Brian Horton, Phil Neal and all the other City managers who couldn’t get the job done. Yesterday, amid scenes of scarcely believable drama at the Etihad Stadium, City chased all of their ghosts away. They did not want to leave. In fact, their spirits lingered until a few seconds from the end of one of the most remarkable matches in Premier League history. Then Sergio Aguero scored the 94th minute winner against QPR that finally took City out of the reach of Manchester United. Only then did it feel as if the haunting ...

Manchester City reclaim control of the Premier League title race as Vincent Kompany's header gives them victory over rivals Manchester United.
Manchester City moved to within touching distance of their first title for 44 years, as Yaya Toure scored twice to secure a crucial victory over Newcastle United. The Ivory Coast midfielder beat Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul with a low curling shot with 20 minutes left. He then added a second from close range with time running out. City now know that victory over QPR in their final match of the season will secure the Premier League title. This was a dominant display by City, inspired by Vincent Kompany's defensive generalship, David Silva's prodigious work in midfield, stellar finishing by Toure and a workrate and ambition that glowed throughout the team. Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville says losing the Premier League title to rivals City on goal difference would be Sir Alex Ferguson's "worst nightmare" following their derby defeat on Monday. - Jolly: United lose in Temple of Doom - Kompany: Title race not over - Manchester Derby gallery The 1-0 defeat at the Etihad, courtesy of Vincent Kompany's header, left the Red Devils second behind City, level on points but eight goals back from their rivals. "I know - I've been in that changing room for 20 years - it's his worst nightmare," Neville told Sky Sports. "Losing a championship on goal difference is what he always talks about, every single season. "In January, in February, in March, whatever month it is going for a championship, he will say if you're 1-0, 2-0 up, 'score three, score four'. You never know whether it's going to get to goal difference. "And you look at games like Fulham at home 1-0, QPR at home 2-0, and it's these sort of things you look back at during a season an think, 'we cou ...
I can understand the way Manchester United played in their 1-0 defeat by Manchester City, which sees Roberto Mancini's team move to the Premier League summit. They played with five in midfield to go and protect what they had, and got men behind the ball. The problem I had in the middle of the park was that they had a 37-year-old Paul Scholes, a 38-year-old Ryan Giggs and Park Ji-sung, who hasn't played for a while. Getting behind the ball was easy but when they got it back, they could not support Wayne Rooney with ease and that left him isolated. That's alright for the first half an hour, because they were absolutely cruising, but when you lose a goal you have to get more men forward to get back in the game. In the last 15 minutes you're thinking, 'they have got to be a threat at some stage' but it never happened. So it wasn't really the tactics that I was surprised about, it was more the line-up. I thought David De Gea was at fault for Vincent Kompany's goal. He's been under pressure all season with ...
