AC Milan ace Michael Essien has rejected the chance to return to the Premier League because of his loyalty to Chelsea, with interest coming from Queens Park Rangers and West Bromwich Albion, according to the Metro. The midfielder was one of Chelsea’s greatest servants during a successful era, in which the 32-year-old won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and a UEFA Champions League trophy.
Louis Van Gaal is expected to hand Victor Valdes his Manchester United debut during Friday evening's FA Cup tie at Cambridge United. The 33-year-old has not featured since March 26 last year when he damaged the cruciate ligament in his right knee while he kept goal for Barcelona against Celta Vigo. The six-time La Liga winner left Barca in the summer and spent the end of 2014 training with Van Gaal's United squad, before signing an 18-month contract earlier this month. He has since been on the bench for Premier League matches with Southampton and Queens Park Rangers, but with David De Gea likely to be rested for the trip to the Abbey Stadium, Valdes will make his United bow, according to numerous reporters. De Gea, who is said to be a target of Real Madrid, has featured in all 24 of United's matches this term

London: Alexis Sanchez helped maintain 10-man Arsenal`s Champions League push as his man-of-the-match display condemned Queens Park Rangers to a 2-1 Premier League defeat on Friday. The Chilean forward went from zero to hero after squandering an early penalty and then putting Arsenal ahead with a 37th-minute header. Arsenal striker Oliver Giroud was sent off for violent conduct before Sanchez`s mazy run carved out a second goal for Tomas Rosicky. Charlie Austin`s late penalty had nerves jangling at the Emirates Stadium, but it was too little, too late for QPR, who fell to a record-equalling ninth straight away defeat. In a bid to end his side`s woes away from Loftus Road, QPR manager Harry Redknapp recalled Rio Ferdinand for the first time since October and he formed part of a new three-man defensive set-up. But those carefully-laid plans should have been ...

Liverpool: A "special" Ross Barkley has all the attributes to become as good as German midfield great Michael Ballack, according to Everton manager Roberto Martinez. England midfielder Barkley scored a stunning solo goal and orchestrated Everton`s 3-1 Premier League win against Queens Park Rangers at Goodison Park on Monday with a man-of-the-match display. The 21-year-old operated in a relatively unfamiliar holding role alongside combative Bosnian Muhamed Besic and dictated play with an array of exquisite passes, powerful surges and forceful tackles. Martinez had previously likened Barkley to the former Bayern Munich and Chelsea midfielder Ballack who was awarded the 2002 UEFA Midfielder of the Year for a series of consistently dominant and inspirational performances. The three-time German footballer of the year won 98 international caps and was widely regarded as one ...

Rodgers joint favourite for the sack At the start of the season, no one would dare to bet on Brendan Rodgers becoming the EPL first manager to be fired. ||| London - You would have been hard pressed at the start of the season to find anyone to bet on Liverpool's Brendan Rodgers becoming the first Premier League manager to get the sack, but he is now the bookies' joint favourite. After last season's runners-up spot, a terrible start to this season has left the Reds without a win in five games, 12th in the table, flirting with an early Champions League exit and Rodgers as low as 4/1 with one bookmaker to get the sack. That makes him joint favourite with Harry Redknapp at bottom club Queens Park Rangers and struggling Aston Villa's Paul Lambert. Rodgers is taking the lion's share of the criticism for Liverpool's poor start, with serious questions being asked about his record in the transfer market, his failure to replace Luis Suarez or sign adequate back-up for the injured Daniel Sturridge. With goals in sho ...

It was set to be a busy day for Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton, despite missing the afternoon’s Premier League encounter against Chelsea through injury.
Jose Mourinho said Friday that star striker Diego Costa would return for Premier League leaders Chelsea's all-London clash at home to strugglers Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
Chelsea vs QPR REVIEW ( Chelsea win 1st half ) Chelsea have failed to score in three of the last four Premier League games against West London rivals QPR. QPR's last visit to Stamford Bridge saw QPR win 1-0 thanks to former Blues player Shaun Wright-Phillips (January 2013). Cesc Fabregas has been involved in nine goals (one goal, eight assists) in nine league games for Chelsea. Queens Park Rangers have won just one of their last 18 away trips to rival London clubs in the Premier League (D3 L14). Harry Redknapp has lost just one of his last six Premier League clashes with Chelsea (W2 D3). However, he has seen his teams lose all five league clashes with Jose Mourinho's Chelsea. In their last 12 league matches at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have kept 10 clean sheets and conceded just four goals in total. The last time a side in the Premier League relegation zone went to the home of the league leaders and won was September 2001 (Southampton beating Sam Allardyce's Bolton 1-0). Since then, the league leaders have ...
One man's loss is another's gain, according to Liverpool Manager Brendan Rodgers, who could throw outcast forward Fabio Borini into the fray against NewcastleUnited on Saturday in the continued absence of leading striker Daniel Sturridge. Italian forward Borini has found first-team chances few and far between at Anfield since signing from AS Roma in 2012 and was sent out on loan to Sunderland last season. He was deemed surplus to requirements on his return to Liverpool, who accepted bids for the player from both Sunderland and Queens Park Rangers. The Italian, however, shunned the opportunity of a fresh start at a new club, where his chances of first-team football would have been greatly improved. After making only one Premier League start in nine games this season, the 23-year-old's chance to shine in a Liverpool shirt came in their 2-1 League Cup victory over Swansea City on Tuesday and Rodgers hailed his impact ahead of his side's trip to 14th-placed Newcastle. "Daniel Sturridge being out has been a bi ...

Three reasons why Manchester United can beat Chelsea. Manchester United take on Chelsea on Sunday in Louis Van Gaal’s toughest test since taking over at Old Trafford in the summer. The Blues have been nothing short of sensational so far this season, and they sit top of the Premier League table after dropping just two points from their opening eight matches. But United can still beat Jose Mourinho’s side and here are three reasons why: Home advantage While United’s league form continues to be hit-and- miss, at home they are beginning to take on the air they once had in abundance. Three wins on the bounce at Old Trafford – against Queens Park Rangers, West Ham United and Everton – have included some of the best attacking football by this side for quite some time, and Chelsea will not relish their visit. That front-line While Wayne Rooney sits out the last of his three- match suspension, United can still call upon some of the very best goal-scorers in the game. Radamel Falcao is likely to be restor ...
Queens Park Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes has apologised to supporters and rebuked the Premier League club's manager Harry Redknapp and striker Adel Taarabt for their public spat over the player's fitness.
Manager Brendan Rodgers says Liverpool `lucky` to win against `deserving` QPR: Liverpool football team Manager Brendan Rodgers has said that his side did not deserve their 3-2 victory over Queens Park Rangers (QPR) and they were lucky to win. Liverpool spurned several clear chances before four goals in the last eight minutes, culminating in Steven Caulker's own goal, gave Rodgers' side a 3-2 victory at Loftus Road. Rodgers said that QPR certainly did not deserve to lose, and added that his side was lucky to win, but they showed tremendous character. He said that QPR definitely deserved something from the game, adding that overall, his side was fortunate, The BBC reported. Liverpool led through Richard Dunne's record 10th Premier League own goal before a breathless finale. Eduardo Vargas levelled three minutes from the end of normal time with his first QPR goal, before Philippe Coutinho drilled in Liverpool's second. Vargas equalised again in added time before Caulker diverted a cross from Raheem Sterling ...

The Reds striker could be out for another month after scans confirmed that he pulled his calf during a training session at Melwood on Thursday. Sturridge was scheduled to make his comeback in Sunday's Premier League clash with lowly Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road after returning to full training during the international break. The 25-year-old had been sidelined for six weeks following the thigh strain he picked up on England duty and now he faces another frustrating spell on the treatment table. Boss Brendan Rodgers expects to be without Sturridge for a further two to four weeks, which means he could sit out another seven matches in all competitions. Sturridge is definitely out of Wednesday’s Champions League showdown with Real Madrid at Anfield and he’s also likely to miss the Reds’ return trip to the Bernabeu to face the European champions a fortnight later. Brendan Rodgers during a training session at Melwood Training Ground on October 17, 2014 “Daniel has pulled his calf,” Rodgers told t ...

[SPOTLIGHT ON CITY, FALCAO AND BALOTELLI] - Just a month into the season, Manchester City is already facing a game of huge significance in the defense of its Premier League title. If City loses at home to early leader Chelsea on Sunday, the champions will be eight points behind their biggest rivals for the championship after five matches. And that will be a sizeable gap considering the strength of the squad that Jose Mourinho has built for this season. Buoyed by a 4-0 win over Queens Park Rangers last weekend, Manchester United's line-up of all-star attackers heads to another promoted club, Leicester, with Radamel Falcao in line for a first start. Scoring goals may not be enough for Mario Balotelli to be the new crowd favourite at Liverpool. The Italy striker ended his wait for a goal for his new club by scoring in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Ludogorets Razgrad in the Champions League. But Manager Brendan Rodgers says Balotelli must dovetail scoring with a relentless work rate, like Luis Suarez did during his ...
Wayne Rooney quietly climbed the list of the Premier League's all-time scorers Sunday while the new boys at Manchester United stole the show during the team's convincing victory over Queens Park Rangers.
Radamel Falcao will walk out at Old Trafford this afternoon for the first time confident he can live up to his billing. The Colombian striker is expected to start against Queens Park Rangers and doesn’t think that mastering the new environment of Premier League football will be a problem.
Tony Cascarino believes Manchester United have sent out a warning to the rest of the Premier League with their 4-0 win over Queens Park Rangers. After a difficult start for new manager Louis Van Gaal his team, assembled after a record- breaking spending spree, finally hit their stride in the Sky Live clash with £59m-man Angel Di Maria shining on his home debut. And Cascarino believes it is only a matter of time before a Di Maria-inspired United will be contending at the top end of the table. "Louis Van Gaal has said what he wanted, he has got it and his first game is a 4-0 victory, in what he would consider to be close to his first starting XI," Cascarino told Sky Sports News HQ. "There was a lot of talk before the game about the season starting here for United and Van Gaal getting what he wanted in his team which was pace, and clearly Angel Di Maria has given them that. "Also Daley Blind coming in and keeping the ball which he did brilliantly yesterday and in some ways QPR were the perfect opponent beca ...
UNiTED STUfFS: Louis Van Gaal hailed a “fantastic” Manchester United performance but insisted his team will be much better and hopes they will end as the Premier League’s highest scorers after Queens Park Rangers were defeated 4-0 at Old Trafford. The victory was the first win of the season for United and the Dutchman, at the fifth attempt. By the close Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie, Juan Mata, Radamel Falcao and Ángel di María had illustrated the attacking riches now at Van Gaal’s disposal. Di María’s goal on his home debut, Ander Herrera’s first for United, plus goals from Rooney – to make him the third highest Premier League goalscorer on 175 – and Mata lifted the club to ninth place with five points. “We have always to analyse what we have done. The result is fantastic but we can get much better,” said Van Gaal. “This is a good start. When you have a result of 4-0 then you can be happy as a coach but you always have points you can improve. We were very dominant and scored goa ...
Manchester United demolished QPR at Old Trafford on Sunday to record their first win of the Premier League season. Stuart Mathieson was at the game for M.E.N Sport - you can read his match report here if you haven't already. Below are excerpts from what the national papers made of the Reds. "It was never United’s intention, one suspects, to arrange a mass emergency air drop of proven talent into Carrington. Reinforcements were always going to be bought, but the scale of the spending reflects the team’s poor start after a misleading pre-season tour of America. This is where Van Gaal comes into his own. Few managers possess the skill to integrate so many players so quickly, but LVG set about the task with relish, finding a shape to accommodate Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Juan Mata, while abandoning the three- defender experiment." Paul Hayward, Telegraph "If Van Gaal was minded quietly to drop that 3-5-2 system then this a day like this was the perfect opportunity to surreptitiously file it away ...
Luke Shaw on course to make debut for Manchester United against Queens Park Rangers in Premier League
Fernando Torres is to have a medical at Milan on Saturday after agreement was reached between the Italian club, Chelsea and the player’s representatives to smooth what is, in effect, a free transfer. The Spain striker, who cost a British record £50m when he signed from Liverpool in January 2011, will leave England after seven seasons in the Premier League and sign a two-year deal at San Siro after agreeing a compromise over his wage demands. He was initially reluctant to lower his £175,000-a-week salary. Advertisement Chelsea had been pushing the 30-year-old to make a decision to ensure they had enough time to secure a replacement before Monday’s transfer deadline and moves are being explored for the Queens Park Rangers striker Loïc Rémy and Roma’s forward Mattia Destro. The latter would cost at least £20m, with the Italian club instinctively resistant to losing a key player so close to the cut-off. Rémy, in contrast, has a buyout clause in his contract set at £8.5m for clubs who finished in ...
United held by Sunderland, Spurs top 24 Aug 2014 19:01:29 Manchester United laboured to a ponderous 1-1 draw away at Sunderland on Sunday that delivered a first Premier League point of the season but laid bare their dire need for reinforcements. After Tottenham Hotspur had made it six points from two games with players condemned as expensive mistakes last season starring in a 4-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers, United's frailties at both ends of the pitch were there for all to see. Juan Mata's opening goal on 17 minutes proved a unique scoring opportunity while their lack of a commanding centre half was exploited by an unmarked Jack Rodwell for Sunderland's equaliser. Goals were not in short supply at White Hart Lane where Harry Redknapp endured a miserable return to his former club. Nacer Chadli scored twice while record signing Erik Lamela was pivotal in a playmaker role, sparking celebrations for new Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, whose side sit top of the fledgling table, and more gloom for Redknap ...

Just recapping the full time score in game two on day one of the Townsville Football Cup pre-season tournament, and Brisbane Roar have continued to sound to the rest of the A-League that their early days of their title defence are looking very promising after defeating a relatively strong Newcastle Jets team 4-0. Goals to Dimi Petratos and Henrique in the first half, and second half goals to substitutes Liam Miller and Shannon Brady wrapped up the win that would have pleased coach Mike Mulvey. With only Matt McKay missing, and 45 minutes for new signing Mensur Kurtishi and key midfielder Luke Brattan was also positives. The Roar play Northern Fury on Wednesday night, with Sydney FC and Newcastle Jets also playing on day two of the tournament, with the Sky Blues winning 3-1 over the hosts in the first game. :FOOTBALL NEWS: (24TH AUGUST 2014) * Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp would be interested in signing Manchester United's Wilfried Zaha if the winger was available on loan. The former Crystal Palace man has made just two senior league appearances for United since signing in January 2013, ending last season on loan at Cardiff. "If we thought he was available he would certainly be of interest," said Redknapp. "If they were to loan him I'm sure a lot of clubs would be interested." Ahead of Redknapp's return to former club Tottenham on Sunday, the QPR boss also said he was confident striker Loic Remy would still be at Loftus Road at the end of the Transfer Window. * Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho insists there was no ulterior motive behind his decision to leave Fernando Torres out of his squad on Saturday. Torres was an unused substitute for the 3-1 Premier League win at Burnley on Monday, but the striker failed to gain a place in Mourinho's matchday 18 on Saturday as Chelsea defeated Leicester City 2-0 ...

Liverpool have agreed a £14 million fee with Sunderland for Italian striker Fabio Borini. Borini spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light where he impressed manager Gus Poyet with some vital goals to assist the club's extraordinary Premier League survival. He was a priority signing for the Black Cats, but after an earlier valuation of £10 million was rejected, terms were agreed on Friday. The 23-year-old becomes the second Liverpool striker to depart the club this month, following Luis Suarez. Their combined sale of £89 million significantly swells Brendan Rodgers’ transfer kitty for the rest of the summer as Liverpool prepare to be Europe’s biggest spenders. Kevin Doyle insists he has no problem with returning to Wolverhampton Wanderers next season, despite helping Queens Park Rangers to the Premier League. The former Reading forward joined Harry Redknapp at Loftus Road in January, when he signed on loan for the remainder of the campaign. Doyle featured 12 times for the Londoners, including the playoff semi-final matches and the final, and scored two goals as the Hoops eventually secured a return to the top-flight at Wembley. It has been suggested that QPR now have an option to take the 30-year-old for a fee of just £1million, but it remains to be seen if they will take up this option. My turn for photos at Wembley... we're Queens Park Rangers, we're Premier League. Oh Bobby Zamora!
Zamora sends QPR back into Premier League (AFP) Saturday 24 May 2014 Share Ten-man Queens Park Rangers clinched promotion to the English Premier League in dramatic fashion as Bobby Zamora's stoppage-time strike secured a 1-0 win over Derby County in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday. Harry Redknapp's side were reduced to ten men for the final 30 minutes after Gary O'Neil's red card, but Zamora punished a mistake by Richard Keogh to steal victory against the run of play and ensure the West Londoners will make a quick and lucrative return to the English top-flight after last season's relegation. It was a real smash and grab raid by QPR, who struggled to find any rhythm even before O'Neil's dismissal, but although Derby dominated they had only themselves to blame for failing to make the most of their chances. QPR's triumph made them the first team to win promotion after finishing fourth in the second tier for 16 years. For Derby manager Steve McClaren, Wembley once again proved the most ...

Rob Green believes Queens Park Rangers would have challenged for automatic promotion to the Premier League if Charlie Austin had stayed fit
The story about Queens Park Rangers turning down Zlatan Ibrahimovic when he was 16 made me smile but he is not the only high-profile player who has made a club curse their judgment. Here are some of the best. 1 Yaya Toure (to Arsenal): Arsene Wenger would do anything to have a player like Toure in his midfield and he could have had him had it not been for a passport problem in 2003. Rather than following his older brother Kolo to Highbury, he went to Donetsk. 2 Cristiano Ronaldo (to Liverpool): How different would the Premier League have been had Ronaldo ended up at Anfield rather than Old Trafford? Liverpool were serious about buying him from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 but they felt his fee and wages were too high for an 18-year-old. 3 Zinedine Zidane (to Blackburn): What we would have done to have Zidane in the Premier League — it might have happened in 1995, too when he was at Bordeaux. He was offered to Blackburn but they were content with having Tim Sherwood(Now spurs manager) 4 Ruud Gullit (to Everto ...
Oscar Garcia says Queens Park Rangers are a Premier League-quality team and that Albion will have to be firing on all cylinders if they are to win at the Amex tomorrow. He told seagulls.co.uk, “They are a big team with a strong squad and a good, experienced manager. For me they are a Premier League side but we are looking forward to the game. “We know we have to be at our best if we want to pick up the three points.” Brighton’s head coach added that Albion fans can play their part again after spurring the team on against Reading on Saturday. “The crowd are always supporting us and on Saturday they were the 11th man and hopefully tomorrow we can finish with 11 on the pitch and their support will be the 12th man. “It is easier to beat the teams when you have fans supporting you all the time and it helps the players during the critical moments.” The Spaniard also believes teams visiting the Amex change their game plan to nullify the Seagulls, adding: “We are playing against all the teams in a ...
Manchester City showed a tactical naivety heading into their home clash against fellow Premier League challenging Chelsea on Monday, February 3 at the Etihad Stadium as they played 'right into Jose Mourinho's hands'. That is the view of Joey Barton, 31, a defensive shield currently employed by Queens Park Rangers and formerly of Newcastle United and City, who added that Mourinho's utilisation of a counter-attack policy, combined with the superb displays returned by Nemanja Matic, David Luiz and Eden Hazard, were the differences in what was a convincing win for Chelsea, who now have amassed the same points haul as the side they defeated last night. Defender Branislav Ivanovic struck the game's sole goal - a powerful first half shot struck from outside the box with his weaker foot and Chelsea even threatened throughout the second half to double their lead. There was an emerging opinion in the press that Mourinho may adopt precisely the same tactic he so abhorred West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce using ag . ...

Andre Villas-Boas deserved more time to work with and develop the Tottenham Hotspur squad, Harry Redknapp said on the day his successor was fired as manager. Three heavy defeats in two months, the most recent a 5-0 mauling by Liverpoolat White Hart Lane on Sunday, resulted in the sack for Villas-Boas with his expensively-assembled team lying a disappointing seventh in the Premier League table. Spurs were also thrashed 6-0 at Manchester Citythree weeks ago and suffered the embarrassment of a 3-0 home defeat by struggling West Ham Unitedin October but Redknapp felt it was too early to jettison the young Portuguese. "I think people are over-reacting too quickly," he told Talksport Radio on Monday. "You lose a couple of games now and you're in trouble, it shouldn't be like that. "You either think somebody is good at their job or not and when you appoint someone you should give them time and let them do the job," added Redknapp, who is now in charge of Championship leaders Queens Park Rangers. GET INVOLVED Andre Villas-Boas became the 19th manager to leave a club this season when he was sacked by Tottenham on Monday. His departure came after 5-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday - Spurs' worst at White Hart Lane in 16 years. But, Villas-Boas left with a win percentage of 53.7% in the league, which is the highest of any Spurs manager since the Premier League era began in 1992. He was the fifth Premier League manager to depart this season, stark contrast to the end of December 2012 when only two managers had gone - Mark Hughes at Queens Park Rangers and Roberto Di Matteo at Chelsea - and there are undoubtedly others in the Premier League who will be glancing nervously over their shoulders. So are chairmen too quick to get rid? Is there too much desire for instant results over building for the future? Are the fans to blame for being too impatient? Have you say
Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi is growing increasingly frustrated with his goal drought, which is about to hit the 12-month mark in the Premier League. The Nigeria international is enjoying a run in the Newcastle first team but, despite some excellent displays, a goal has not come his way. His last league goal came against Queens Park Rangers last year, and he is desperate to find the back of the net. "I am extremely frustrated. I am playing well but not scoring goals," he told the Evening Chronicle after missing a good chance in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Southampton. "I should have buried that header in the second half, it was bread and butter for me. It is frustrating and something I need to work on. "As a striker you gain confidence from scoring goals. I have to add them to my game in the rest of the season. I am working hard in training to make sure I get into positions and hopefully they will come soon. "It is a long drought now. It is something I am trying not to think about. "When you do that it aff ...

Campbell, who played in the Premier League with Birmingham, Blackpool and Queens Park Rangers, is the highest profile player to face allegations of corruption after being investigated by police over claims that Football League players were paid to get themselves booked or sent off. The 32-year-old signed for Blackburn in July after previously being on loan from QPR since February. He agreed a two-year contract understood to be worth in excess of £1million each year but injury problems have restricted him to just five first-team appearances this season. He is one of six people arrested in the latest NCA inquiry, which follows a separate criminal investigation into alleged match-fixing in non-League football after an undercover sting by Telegraph Sport revealed how south-east Asian betting syndicates were attempting to rig the results of matches in England. The other five who were questioned as part of the latest inquiry are former Portsmouth player Sam Sodje, his brothers Stephen and Akpo, Oldham winger C ...

Sky Sports understands a number of Premier League and Championship clubs are tracking Bournemouth defender Steve Cook. Cook has caught the eye for Bournemouth this season with a number of impressive performances since their promotion to the Sky Bet Championship. The 22-year-old has been an ever-present for Eddie Howe's side this term and his fine form was rewarded with the club's player of the month award for October. Cook's performances have not gone unnoticed with scouts flocking to the Goldsands Stadium to keep tabs on his progress. Premier League trio Norwich, West Brom and Crystal Palace and Championship duo Queens Park Rangers and Leicester are all thought to be admirers of Cook. Bournemouth tied Cook down to a new deal in the summer to ward off potential suitors and they are braced for further interest in the talented defender when the Transfer Window reopens in January.
Among the many revelations, some more bafflingly controversial than others, regarding the England manager’s role during the recent international break came one that raised eyebrows among Liverpool supporters. After all, had Harry Redknapp been handed the national team job ahead of Roy Hodgson, the immediate future of the Anfield outfit could have been very different. Brendan Rodgers confirmed this week he was approached in April 2012 by Redknapp to become his assistant in the event of the then-Tottenham Hotspur manager landing the big one. Of course, it never happened. Instead, with Redknapp ultimately destined for Queens Park Rangers, Rodgers was charged less than two months later with dragging Liverpool back into the Champions League. So far, so good for this season, with his side second only to Arsenal on goals scored in the embryonic Premier League table going into tomorrow afternoon’s clash at Newcastle United. Rodgers, though, has always maintained an interest in the bigger picture. And while ** ...

It will be all change as far as Stoke City are concerned next season. Having been at the club since 2006 and overseen their elevation to an established Premier League side, Tony Pulis has decided to call it a day. While his side's direct style of play had been often criticised by opposition supporters, as the Potters slid dangerously close to relegation trouble last term, some of Pulis's own fans had started to call for New Ideas. The man charged with the task of altering things is Mark Hughes, who has a point to prove after quite frankly a disastrous stint with Queens Park Rangers. He's already acquired left-back Erik Pieters, but more signings are needed. With that in mind, Here is a list of five players that may help Stoke improve upon their 13th-placed finish during the most recent campaign. Danny Rose, Tottenham Hotspur It seems that one of the first things that Hughes noticed when he arrived at the Britannia Stadium was that he needed a left-back. Saint Etienne defender Kurt Zouma admits he is flattered to be linked with a summer move to Chelsea, reports Sky Sports . The 18-year-old centre-back has attracted interest from a host of top European clubs, after a series of commanding performances in Ligue 1 last season. Bayern Munich and AC Milan are both believed to be monitoring Zouma's situation, but it's Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho who is understood to be on the verge of making a bid. Zouma almost arrived in the Premier League - and West London - last summer, as his representatives held preliminary talks over a move to Queens Park Rangers. Now it looks as though Stamford Bridge will be his most likely English destination, which is a transfer prospect that has made the France U20 international 'take note'. SPORTAINMENT. Worthy Ambassador of Man U- Ageless Giggs set for 1,000th game Ryan Giggs is poised to reach yet another milestone in his extraordinary career on Tuesday when he is expected to make his 1,000th appearance in senior football. Robin Van Persie has now scored 19 Premier League goals this season. The same amount as Queens Park Rangers.
Derek Llambias insisted Newcastle United refused to break their policy for Loic Remy. United thought they had won the race to sign the French international last month after Marseille accepted an £8m bid for the France striker. However, after arriving in London first, Queens Park Rangers pipped the Magpies after making a huge cash offer to sign the player for the rock-bottom Premier League club. Now injured, Remy must watch on from the sidelines to see if he will be regarded as a top-flight player come May. Reflecting on missing out on the £80,000-a-week striker, Llambias told us: “We put a lot of work into that deal. “It is like everything else, we do not really want to break our policies. “If you do not want to come here and play then it is your choice. “He made the decision, so there you go. It is sort of hard to believe we are having this conversation. Just shy of two-thirds through the Premier League schedule, Manchester City has conceded the fewest goals in the league. The total of 19 goals they have conceded is five better than their nearest competitor, Chelsea, and it is less than a goal against per match. City has played 24 matches and lost twice. Every other Premier League club has lost at least three times, table-topping Manchester United included. Despite it all, City is seven points back of United and the likelihood of the Citizens defending their Premier League title lessens with each passing punchless draw. LONDON: Manchester City started what seems certain to be life without Mario Balotelli with a frustrating goalless draw at Premier League bottom club Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday.   Balotelli was missing as he concluded the details of his move to AC Milan after City had accepted the Italian club's reported £19 million offer for the striker earlier in the day.   And without the controversial forward, Roberto Mancini's champions missed out on the chance to close the gap on leaders Manchester United to two points.   But the draw left QPR within four points of safety.Balotelli's departure this month has been predicted for some time and the Italy international has been out of favour with Mancini, scoring just one league goal this season.   But the 22-year-old's unpredictable talents might just have made the difference in a stalemate at Loftus Road that will give West London club QPR hope they can avoid relegation. Harry Redknapp's side remain unbeaten in the league since the turn of the year -- although ...
QPR held on to claim a valuable draw in their fight against relegation: Manchester City frittered away a decent chance to put pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester United as bottom-placed QPR eked out a goalless draw at Loftus Road. On a day dominated by Mario Balotelli's expected move to AC Milan, Roberto Mancini's side could have done with a moment of magic from the Italy international. Bottom club Queens Park Rangers held Premier League champions Manchester City to a draw, thanks to a fantastic goalkeeping display from Julio Cesar. The visitors dominated the first half as Pablo Zabaleta hit the bar and Gareth Barry had a shot tipped wide. You have to say it was QPR's night. There were so many good performances, and tonight could be the night that Man City feel the Premier League slip from their hands. There was no Mario Balotelli for Manchester City, as the Italian striker finalises a move to AC Milan, and Roberto Mancini will be concerned that his side could not find a way past the club bottom ...
World Sports News Everton fan found guilty of racial abuse A man was found guilty of racially abusing two Premier League footballers in front of his wife, children and grandson by a London court on Monday. Everton supporter William Blything shouted the racist abuse at Queens Park Rangers' South Korean star Park Ji-Sung and Everton forward Victor Anichebe during a 1-1 draw at Loftus Road on October 21. Blything, of Moss Pits Lane in Wavertree, Liverpool, denied a single count of racially-aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress but was found guilty at West London Magistrates' Court. However, District Judge Jeremy Coleman said Blything would not face a custodial penalty when he is sentenced on February 11. The judge said: "If the players had heard these comments - and there is no evidence that they did - it would have caused them upset." The 42-year-old Blything was arrested after he was reported to stewards by two fellow Everton fans as he watched the game with his wife, 16-year-old daughter, 1 ...
West Ham United 1-1 Queens Park Rangers | Premier League match report: Harry Redknapp could have seen it coming.

Premier League round-up Reading climbed out of the relegation zone after claiming a first away win of the season at Newcastle United and Loic Remy scored on his Queens Park Rangers debut against West Ham United. Wigan Athletic slipped into the drop zone after losing at home to Sunderland as Norwich City shipped five goals against Liverpool for the second time this season. Champions Manchester City picked up three points at home against Fulham and Swansea City proved too strong for Stoke City in South Wales. Adam Le Fondre scored twice in the space of six second-half minutes as Reading came from behind to win 2-1 at St James' Park and pile the pressure on Newcastle boss Alan Pardew. Newcastle gained the initiative 10 minutes before half-time when Yohan Cabaye marked his first start for over two months by curling an excellent free-kick over the wall and into the top corner. Reading equalised in unconventional circumstances on 71 minutes when Jimmy Kebe's low cross was turned in by what appeared to be Le Fon ...
Only very infrequently would a manager greet a match-winning performance with a sigh, but that might well have been what Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp did after his side won 1-0 away to West Bromwich Albion. Ending their hoodoo at The Hawthorns is one thing, but can Rangers continue their unbeaten 2013 with a positive result against London rivals West Ham United at Upton Park? What's the story? Disbelief was the primary reaction when the news filtered through that QPR had beaten the Baggies thanks to a winning goal from Jay Bothroyd. While it is customary to greet any win in football with a whoop and a cheer, to put it kindly the Rs have more pressing issues than a fourth round tie against Milton Keynes Dons. Surviving in the Premier League, not seeing off opponents in the FA Cup, is what Rangers need most. Therefore the result was surely, on the whole, potentially detrimental? Not in the slightest. Form is a precious commodity and must be jealously guarded by any team fortunate enough to posses ...
Queens Park Rangers have a chance of survival because of the hunger of players such as Shaun Derry, a 35-year-old rock and anchor in midfield. Derry has fought so hard and so long to start in a Premier League midfield that he is not giving up this coveted status lightly. "I've played in every league in English football so being at this level means the absolute world to me,'' reflected Derry yesterday (Thursday), after training at Harlington. "I've been at Notts County, getting up at 5.30, travelling down to Plymouth on the day of the game, having beans on toast on the bus. We drew 1-1 and came back that night. It was the longest day ever. I thought that was what football was about. "I loved League One and League Two, and the togetherness of the boys. There isn't the togetherness here, not just here at QPR, but in the Premier League like there is in the lower leagues. We're very fortunate we are paid good money. We can spend pounds 150 on a night out. "Back at Notts County, I'd have pounds 20 which would g ...
QPR ready to spend big again in Transfer Window to avoid relegation. On the day Tony Fernandes bought Queens Park Rangers, he spoke of prudence and stability. He would not bankroll the club, he said. QPR would be run with common sense, good judgment - a model of how to succeed in a world where the value of footballers had become "completely inflated." "Football needs to change," he declared. "There are clubs out there who are spending money that if they were in a real business they could not afford. That inflates it for everybody. For the sake of football, proper business sense has to be made." Some 17 months on, Fernandes is finding out that it is not at all easy to stay within a tight budget when the pressures of sustaining Premier League football weigh heavily on you. Since he made that statement, managers Neil Warnock and Mark Hughes have departed and some 20 players have arrived. Nevertheless, having narrowly escaped an immediate return to the Championship last season, QPR are bottom of the Premier L ...
JUST A RUMOUR . Central Coast Mariners chairman Peter Turnbull has confirmed Queens Park Rangers are in the hunt to sign highly-rated midfielder Tom Rogic. The 20-year-old is currently on trial with Celtic and has been linked with a string of clubs, with Reading having already expressed an interest in holding talks. Fulham, Celta Vigo, Rayo Vallecano and Club Brugge are also reported to be keen and Turnbull is waiting to see what develops. Turnbull told au.fourfourtwo.com: "We can confirm that QPR have provided a formal letter and another is expected from another Premier League club.
Old heads lift QPR Mark Buckingham was impressed by the way Queens Park Rangers called on experience to secure a 0-0 draw at home with Harry Redknapp's former club Tottenham Hotspur. Harry Redknapp faced Tottenham Hotspur for the first time on Saturday since his departure last summer and experience came to the fore as Queens Park Rangers delivered a disciplined performance to draw 0-0 at Loftus Road. One of the Premier League's elder statesman, Redknapp's game-plan worked to perfection as the old heads of goalkeeper Julio Cesar, defenders Clint Hill and Ryan Nelsen, and midfielder Shaun Derry all played vital roles. For Tottenham, it was probably one of their most disjointed performances and Andre Villas-Boas' side only really threatened in the opening stages of each half. Selection Harry Redknapp made two changes to his starting line-up from QPR's last Premier League game - the impressive 1-0 win at Chelsea. Esteban Granero was out with a hamstring injury, so Park Ji-sung came in for his first league sta ...
January 11, 2013 Stoke v. Chelsea Preview (Sky Sports) Tony PullisStoke will feel that they are entertaining Chelsea at a good time, with the Blues having wobbled of late. The Potters came unstuck in their last Premier League outing, against Manchester City, but that was their first setback in 11 matches. The consistency displayed by Tony Pulis' side has them sat inside the top 10, but 11 draws have prevented them from pushing into the pack chasing European qualification. A morale-boosting victory over Chelsea could see them back in that particular hunt, though, and Stoke have yet to taste defeat in front of their own supporters this season. Rafa Benitez will be all too aware of that fact when he takes his troops to the Britannia Stadium. Chelsea suffered a painful Capital One Cup defeat to Swansea in midweek, while they also came unstuck in their last top flight outing - against Queens Park Rangers. They need to get back on track if they are to keep their fading title hopes alive, with Manchester United ...
With the Premier League fight for survival just past the halfway stage of the 2012/2013 campaign, history suggests that there is no hope for Reading, while it is a case of déjà vu for the likes of Queens Park Rangers and Wigan Athletic. Relegation follows certain clubs around and avoiding it can feel like winning a trophy. That is the line QPR boss Harry Redknapp is spinning to potential new recruits, with quotes to that effect widely reported in the betting news. The experienced manager took the reins at Loftus Road with the Rs sat on only four points after 13 Premier League games and with confidence crumbling as a result of heavy defeats, topped off by Swansea recording the season’s biggest away win at Loftus Road (0-5). The last team to notch up such a woeful record after the same number of games was Sheffield United in 1990/1991 (W0 D4 L9), although United did manage to upset all the odds by avoiding the drop that year. Redknapp’s side ended their 16-game wait for a win against Fulham on Decembe ...

Bradford City have beaten more Premier League teams than Queens Park Rangers have this season.
Hoop dreams: I thought QPR were a sinking ship, but Harry's given me hope 6 Jan 2013 07:30 Beating Chelsea away on Wednesday was the result of the season so far - every Rangers player and fan will believe anything is now possible The incredibles? Keeping QPR up will be Redknapp's greatest achievement Ian Walton Harry Redknapp has achieved some incredible things as a Football Manager. But if he keeps Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League, it will top the lot. I both played and managed at Loftus Road, so QPR will always be special to me. And I can say, hand on heart, that before Harry came to the rescue, I thought Rangers were in a mess and heading for certain relegation. Too many players had been signed on big wages much too quickly. If you parachute a dozen new people into any business that already has 20 or so loyal employees then you are asking for trouble. And success in football has always been about evolution rather than revolution. I’ve got to say that when Rangers appointed Redknapp ...
Sneijder's agent: "No contacts with Londonese clubs. News within 10 days" Interviewed by BBC and asked about Dutch international offensive midfielder Wesley Sneijder's (28) forthcoming future, his agent, Soren Lerby, stated: "Premier League is sure a great championship, and we'd be keen to join it, but not at Queens Park Rangers. Wesley he's in fine shape now, he's one of the best player in Europe, and wants to play for a top club. Anyway, we haven't been in touch with Londonese clubs (referring to rumours about a pre-agreement with Tottenham, Editor's note). Farewell to Inter? There will be news within 10 days from now, everything is currently very strange for sure". About to leave Neroazzurri indeed, former Ajax and Real Madrid player has been recently drawn towards Manchester United, Manchester City, Anzhi Makhachkala, Los Angeles Galaxy, Schalke 04 and AC Milan.
The agent of Wesley Sneijder says the Inter Milan star has no interest in signing for Queens Park Rangers, but the reported Manchester United, Liverpool and Tottenham target hopes to join a 'top' Premier League team. However, according to Soren Lerby, Sneijder would not consider a move to Loftus Road, but only a transfer prominent English side, which wouldappear to leave open the chance of a switch to Manchester United , Liverpool or Tottenham.
Queens Park Rangers • Queen's Park Rangers are looking for their 100th win in an FA Cup match, and their first under Harry Redknapp, who won the cup with Portsmouth in 2008, and took Spurs to the League Cup final the following season. • The Rs go into this match three days after pulling off a shock 1-0 victory away to West London rivals Chelsea in the Premier League. Their loss to Chelsea in last season's FA Cup was the first time in 11 years they had reached the fourth round. • The 1982 runners-up beat Milton Keynes at this stage 12 months ago; their only victory in 13 ties (18 matches). West Ham was the last Premier League club they knocked out (fourth round, January 1995). West Bromwich Albion • Albion have appeared in 10 FA Cup Finals and have won five of them, but the most recent was in 1968. Their boss Steve Clarke has a winners' medal in 1997 with Chelsea, who he then coached to silverware in 2007. • Last season's fourth round loss to Norwich was the first time the Baggies had come up aga ...
QPR v West Brom: DJ Campbell, Rob Hulse and Jay Bothroyd to play in FA Cup. Harry Redknapp is promising to give the FA Cup the respect it deserves when his Queens Park Rangers host West Bromwich Albion in the third round on Saturday. The home team are battling against Premier League relegation and are expected to make changes for the cup tie against their top-flight rivals as survival is the priority. But Redknapp, an FA Cup-winning manager with Portsmouth in 2008, will not be taking the world's oldest cup competition lightly. Redknapp hopes for turning point West Brom will therefore need to be prepared for a tough game, especially as Steve Clarke will be taking an injury hit squad to London. The Baggies have also lost their last two Premier League games in what has been a difficult period for the Midlands club. And so Clarke, an FA Cup winner as a player and coach, respectively, with Chelsea in 1997 and 2007, will want a response and a confidence boost.

A New Year brings new hope for Liverpool FC. Resolutions were honoured at Anfield last night as Brendan Rodgers' side kicked off 2013 in style with a resounding victory over Sunderland. After an erratic December, when performances flipped from the sublime to the ridiculous, the Reds followed up their hammering of Queens Park Rangers with an equally dominant display. They triumphed with a swagger as Luis Suarez delivered another breathtaking match-winning double. The Uruguayan is operating at the peak of his powers and now boasts 15 Premier League goals this term – the best haul by a Liverpool player in a season since Fernando Torres netted 18 in2009/10. With 18 in all competitions, Suarez has already surpassed his tally for the last campaignand if he can maintain these standards then the coming months will be some ride. Having laid on the opener for Raheem Sterling, Suarez took centre stage with two scintillating finishes. Both of his goals were created by the outstanding Steven Gerrard and at times the ...

Photograph: Scott Heppell/AP Chelsea are confident of agreeing personal terms with Demba Ba and completing the £7m signing of the striker on Thursday, the Newcastle United manager, Alan Pardew, having said on Wednesday night it "was a done deal". Rafael Benítez, the Chelsea manager, was more cautious but confirmed that he hopes to have the Senegalese striker available for the game against Southampton this weekend. "I don't have any official information," Benítez said after the home defeat by Queens Park Rangers. "I know that Alan Pardew is talking but officially he is not our player, so I cannot say too much. The club is working [on it]. If we can do the business, I hope he can be available for Southampton [on Saturday] but I cannot say too much. Al ...
Liverpool: Team News V Sunderland The Reds host Sunderland tonight in their first game of 2013 and thankfully the recent illness outbreak appears to have subsided... Liverpool will look to build on Sunday's 3-0 win over Queens Park Rangers when they welcome Sunderland to Anfield for a Premier League fixture this evening. Brendan Rodgers and his 10th placed side will be forced to tackle the game without the presence of left-back Jose Enrique after the impressive Spaniard sustained a hamstring tear at Loftus Road. The Merseysiders are likely to be without Enrique's services for at least a month and after confirming the news assistant manager Colin Pascoe acknowledged: "The way he's been performing these last couple of months has been a joy to watch. It's a shame, and hopefully he's not out for too long." The 26-year-old was replaced by Suso against QPR with Stewart Downing filling in at full-back. The same thing is likely to happen against Sunderland but there are other options such as youngsters Jack Robin ...

Brendan Rodgers outlined why he is confident his Liverpool side will banish their Boxing Day frustrations when they tackle Queens Park Rangers on Sunday afternoon The Reds were left disappointed by a 3-1 defeat to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on Wednesday evening - a game in which the manager conceded his charges were not at their best in the decisive moments of the contest. However, Rodgers insists optimism has not been dampened and is convinced Liverpool won't show any signs of a Festive hangover at Loftus Road. The boss told his pre-match press conference at Melwood: "The glass is half-full - I'm always optimistic. "Our game the other night was very disappointing in terms of the result. It's really frustrating, but I remain always optimistic because of the honesty of the group and the players. "There is no doubt we need to be more consistent. We've shown that on our day we are a match for any team in the league and some of our performances this year have been exceptional, but we have to do that ...

Harry Redknapp believes Queens Park Rangers still have “a big chance” of avoiding relegation from the Premier League this season despite losing his unbeaten record as Hoops boss. HOOPER NOT FAZED BY TRANSFER TALK GARY HOOPER last night shrugged aside the transfer speculation that is intensifying around him ahead of the January window. The Celtic star is now on the radar of Queens Park Rangers as well as other Premier League and there has also been a suggestion that the Hoops’ Champions League opponents Juventus are monitoring the striker. Boss Neil Lennon has dismissed the Italians’ interest but conceded Celtic have taken a phone call enquiring about the hitman’s situation in the last few days. Two more for the 24-year-old in the win over Ross County at the weekend has raised the interest level to a new high, with clubs poised to start doing business again in just over a week’s time. Celtic are trying to tie the striker up to a new long-term deal with Lennon believing they are edging closer to doing that. “If and when I have anything for you I will be able to let you know one way or the other but the soundbite I’m getting from Gary is that he is delighted and happy to ...
Queens Park Rangers defender Clint Hill has admitted that he is disappointed with the way they lost to Newcastle United yesterday. Shola Ameobi scored late on to give the home side all three points and Hill thinks that he and his teammates could have done better. "It was a bit disappointing, the way we conceded the goal and the outcome of the game," he told the club's official website. "Sometimes it's harder to take [conceding late on] than a three or four-nil loss. We worked hard to keep it all square and then they scored. "I thought we could have done better for the goal. It was a disappointing day." The result means that QPR remain five points from safety in 18th place in the Premier League.

Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp admits he would be delighted if the club can lure Nicolas Anelka back to the Premier League. -AS.
Queens Park Rangers won’t be held to ransom in the January Transfer Window, so says boss Harry Redknapp as he and chairman Tony Fernandes prepare to go bargain hunting. No fewer than 12 players joined the ranks at Loftus Road this summer but mass recruitment is not on the agenda second time round. In a notoriously inflated mid-season market, Redknapp vowed to plump for quality rather than quantity in his bid to save QPR’s Premier League skin. “Teams think they’ll screw you into the ground, because you’re desperate. We’re not going to fall into that trap, if we can’t get players at the right price, we’ll sit tight,” he said. “Whoever we bring in have got to be the right people to try and get us out of the situation we’re in. “We’ve got to be very clever. We can’t just afford to load up again with people that are really not the type that are going to help.” With the window not yet open, QPR have already been linked with a whole raft of players and Redknapp is growing weary of h ...

Alan Pardew’s admitted Newcastle United must beat Queens Park Rangers – or else be dragged into a relegation battle. The club has won just one of its last seven Premier League games. That sequence has left Newcastle just two points above the bottom three. The QPR game on Saturday is followed by tough festive away games against Manchester United and Arsenal. And unless United beat Harry Redknapp’s side at St James’s Park, they could find themselves in the relegation zone by the end of the year, with last season’s impressive fifth-placed finish becoming a distant memory.

Alan Pardew: We've got to go and attack Man City by Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle Alan Pardew will make his feelings crystal clear to his players this week as he looks to address Newcastle United's alarming form. The Toon boss has demanded a response from his troops after a worrying run of just one win from the last 10 games. And although the next two fixtures are against wounded Premier League champions Manchester City - still reeling from their last-gasp 3-2 derby loss against Man United - and then recovering Queens Park Rangers, who have been boosted by the appointment of Harry Redknapp, Pardew is still bravely targeting six points from the next two games. Pardew will have home advantage on his side as well as influential playmaker Hatem Ben Arfa fully fit after he emerged unscathed from the 2-1 loss at Fulham.
