Dzeko: Chelsea Could Take Away Title Eden Dzeko has suggested Chelsea will post the biggest threat to Manchester City’s Barclays Premier League crown, as the Champions look set to defend their title in a competitive season ahead, according to the Mirror. Last season saw City regain supremacy from city rivals Manchester United, who had one of the worst campaigns in their history as a club in the Premier League. Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement and employment of David Moyes did not work, and United crumbled in their own then, losing to several relegation threatened teams. Chelsea were the underdogs, as Jose Mourinho continued to downplay his side’s chances of challenging for the crown. Liverpool were the dark horse in the race, but succumbed to the pressure in the end. This time around, Mourinho is well prepared, and with Diego Costa leading the attack line, Chelsea are set to fire on all cylinders to win the title once again. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho reckons his three new strikers are perfect Jose Mourinho claims he finally has a trio of hitmen to strike fear into the hearts of Premier League defenders. Mourinho rounded off a busy summer by signing £10.5m striker Loic Remy from QPR late in the window to totally transform his forward line. Chelsea's strikeforce last season consisted of Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto'o and Demba Ba but they only scored 19 Premier League goals between them. Now, Mourinho insists he at last has the firepower he needs to lift the title again in Remy, player of the month Diego Costa and returning hero Didier Drogba. He said: "We had a good group of strikers last season, but we changed three for three and we believe these three give us more, in relation to the football we want to play. "Remy was almost in the last day, but that was just a consequence of Fernando leaving, a reaction to an unexpected situation. The Blues are on the hunt for a new forward after letting Fernando Torres join AC Milan on a two-year loan on Friday, pending the Spaniard agreeing personal terms and passing a medical. And Jose Mourinho appears to have acted quickly in the transfer market by moving for the France international, who played at this summer's World Cup. Remy enjoyed a highly successful loan spell with Newcastle last season, finishing as the club's top scorer with 14 Premier League goals. However, the 27-year-old has always made it perfectly clear he wishes to play in the Champions League and now looks set to get his wish with Chelsea. Remy has a staggered buy-out clause with the Hoops, meaning clubs in Europe's top competition can pay just £8m to land the striker, whereas teams such as Newcastle would have to pay a higher fee. Earlier on in the summer the Frenchman look destined to join Liverpool after the Reds met that ...

Premier League stars played a combined total of more than 16 days of football during their summer break, covering 2489.9km of Brazilian turf in the search for glory. It’s not much of a holiday. The season will start in just over four weeks, giving those who lasted the distance at most a couple of weeks away before the grind of pre-season kicks in. Expect another fortnight before the usual moans of player fatigue commence. On the face of it José Mourinho has the most to worry about – Chelsea players featured for more time and covered more ground than any other club’s squad. Fernando Torres - 4 goals in 27 Premier League games. James Wilson - 2 goals in 60 minutes.
Fair play to Chelsea for getting that far in the competition. I can understand their fans gripes and despite everything they should be proud of reaching a semi final despite having no striker. Having to play a £50mil goalkeeper Fernando Torres, the left back Samuel Eto'o a multiple time african footballer of the year that played for and won the CL with Barca & Inter and the experienced Premier League phyio Demba Ba all as strikers was difficult.
SUMMARY OF MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 1 SUNDERLAND 2 Fabio Borini's 81st-minute penalty consigned us to our maiden league defeat at Stamford Bridge under Jose Mourinho. It was the Portuguese's 78th Premier League game in charge of Chelsea at our home ground. Not only does the loss signal the end of that astonishing run, it also gives Liverpool a huge advantage in the race for the title. We started brightly and took the lead through a Samuel Eto'o volley but our visitors hit back soon after through Connor Wickham after Mark Schwarzer, standing in for the ill Petr Cech, couldn't hold Marcos Alonso's volley. Branislav Ivanovic hit the bar before the interval and Eto'o, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres went close after it but it was Sunderland who returned home with the points after Cesar Azpilicueta felled substitute Jozy Altidore and Borini, on loan from Liverpool, converted with ease. Unlike so often before when we have faced an uphill task at this stadium there was no late reprieve and it was left to Mourinho to c ...

Inter Make Mikel Move Inter are planning to continue their Premier League recruitment drive with a move for Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel. Inter president Erick Thohir is understood to have been in attendance at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night for the Blues’ 2-0 Champions League triumph over Paris Saint-Germain. And the midfielder, who has started just nine Premier League games during Jose Mourinho’s second spell with Chelsea, is considered a realistic transfer target by the Nerazzurri. Thohir is developing relationships with a number of Premier League clubs ahead of a planned summer overhaul at San Siro. Inter have already secured the signing of free agent Nemanja Vidic, who will leave Manchester United at the end of the season. As revealed by Goal, the Serie A side also maintain an interest in Fernando Torres, but believe a season-long loan deal for the striker could be difficult to secure and have made Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko their No.1 target for the summer.
EPL: Chelsea return to top spot, hammer Stoke 3-0 (AFP)— Chelsea regained top spot in the Premier League thanks to a straightforward 3-0 win over shot-shy Stoke City at Stamford Bridge in Saturday’s late kick-off. Goals from Mohamed Salah, Frank Lampard and Willian were enough for Jose Mourinho’s side to move ahead of Liverpool, who play West Ham on Sunday, by a point. Victory also ended a run of two successive defeats and maintained Mourinho’s remarkable record of never having lost at home in the Premier League. And it will also have acted as a timely boost ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final decider against Paris Saint-Germain, where Chelsea must overturn a 3-1 first leg deficit if they are to reach the last four. Fernando Torres, the Spain forward, was the early focus of attention after being restored to the Chelsea starting line-up. Wednesday’s defeat in Paris had seen Mourinho start with no recognised front-man and the Portuguese manager complained afterwards that he lacked ...

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher reckons the Redmen's side from 2009 were better than this year’s Premier League title challengers. Speaking with The Sunday Times, Carragher praised the present side and acknowledged they are closer to winning the title, but said "I played in better teams." Five years ago the Reds finished second to a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Manchester United by four points under Rafa Benitez, despite losing just two games of a thrilling campaign, which saw them beat the Red Devils 4-1 at Old Trafford. Liverpool chalked up 86 points, the club's highest tally to date in the Premier League era, and boasted a formidable midfield and backline. just like Brendan Rodgers’ side (at time of writing) Benitez’s team topped the scoring charts, with 77 goals across the season, as Steven Gerrard scored 16 times and Fernando Torres netted 14 strikes.
Aldridge: "I laughed my head off when I read that Martin Skrtel has now got more Premier League goals than Fernando Torres this season."
CHELSEA UPDATE ETOO OUT FOR TWO WEEKS Jose Mourinho is optimistic that Samuel Eto'o will return to action within the fortnight to bolster Chelsea's Premier League challenge. The Cameroon striker suffered a hamstring injury during Chelsea's 6-0 victory over Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. Eto'o scored his 11th goal of the season against Arsenal before being withdrawn, fearing he had a severe injury. He will likely miss next weekend's trip to relegation-threatened Crystal Palace but Mourinho is hopeful the striker will return soon. "Hopefully it's not so big," said Mourinho. "Hopefully it's not a one-month injury, it's 10 to 15 days." Mourinho was happy with Eto'o's replacement, Fernando Torres, and with David Luiz's display in midfield, a position the manager insisted earlier in the season the Brazil defender would not play. "Fernando, without scoring a goal, had a very good performance with great movement for the team," Mourinho said. "I like David in midfield. I like him a lot there."

Martin Skrtel (6) has more Premier League goals than Fernando Torres (4) this season.
Arsène Wenger's 1,000th game will always be remembered for The Mysterious Case of the Wrong Red Card, but Arsenal should probably be grateful the sideshow was so intrusively farcical, and the refereeing so birdbrained, it might spare them even greater scrutiny. Ignore, for one moment, Andre Marriner's contribution to a wild and eccentric afternoon. The real story was of Arsenal capitulating, once again, in one of the fixtures that identify champions. Add this to the 6-3 ordeal at Manchester City and the 5-1 at Liverpool and there is a clear pattern to explain why Wenger will not be collecting the Premier League trophy to go alongside that gold cannon he has just received for his long-service. The aggregate score is 17-4 and Wenger's mood could probably be summed up by his decision, for the first time in his 17 and a half years in charge, not to face the post-match press conference. Advertisement His team had played with no comprehension of what it takes to hold Chelsea and they suffered badly for it. The ...

*Barcelona Want Liverpool Boss Brendan Rodgers To Be Their Next Manager to replace their own manager Tata Martino. The in-demand Reds boss has a contract with the Merseyside giants that now only runs until June 2015 as a result, rumours have begun to circulate of late linking Rodgers with a number of big-name clubs, both in the Premier League and across the Continent too. *Arsenal are ready to offer a new contract to French star defender Laurent Koscielny in the summer, according to reports. The Gunners manager Arsene Wenger has made concerted efforts to tie down the club's top players over the past few weeks, with the likes of Per Mertesacker,Tomas Rosicky being the first to commit their futures to the North London outfit, followed by Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and youngster Gedion Zelalem, all penning improved deals at the club the previous day. *Atletico Madrid are keen on re-uniting with Fernando Torres this summer as they step up plans to end his Chelsea misery. Find below, Crooks disgruntled comments. You can literally picture steam coming out of his ears "After he scored such a lucky winner for Everton against Cardiff I´m almost tempted, if you´ll excuse the pun, to call the right-back ´Shameless´ Coleman. Particularly for celebrating his goal, courtesy of a mis-kick, by doing a lap of honour around Goodison Park. He maybe should have apologised to David Marshall for the fortunate strike that robbed Cardiff of a deserved point. But the Everton defender has been an extra attacking outlet for Roberto Martinez this season and was in the right place at the right time to net once again. Did you know? The Irish full-back is the top scoring defender in the Premier League this season with six goals - as many as Fernando Torres and Michu combined." Quite right too Mr Crooks! How DARE a footballer celebrate scoring the winning goal in an important home game? How DARE he be happy to have grabbed a goal that gives his team a valuable 3 points! A 3 points that increases ...
LIVERPOOL -- Brendan Rodgers has called on his Liverpool players to put down a marker in the Premier League title race by securing a first win away at Manchester United since 2009. • 50-50 Challenge: Manchester United vs. Liverpool • Usher: Decisions, decisions ahead for Liverpool • Jolly: Role reversal from Manchester to Merseyside Ahead of Sunday’s visit Old Trafford, Rodgers’ side are in second place, seven points behind Chelsea, but have played a game fewer than the leaders -- who still have to visit Anfield. Liverpool’s last away win over United was five years ago to the day on Friday, when Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena scored in a 4-1 victory. The 2008-09 campaign was the last time that the Reds mounted a serious title challenge, but ultimately finished second after being held to too many draws. Rodgers’ side, though, have dropped only four league points in 2014, and could yet be crowned champions of England for the first time since 1990. The former ...

Inter owner Erick Thohir has denied that his team have been in talks with Javier Hernandez and Fernando Torres about luring the Premier League strikers to San Siro. Report understands that Valencia and Atletico Madrid are one of several clubs interested in signing the Manchester United forward, with the Red Devils willing to sell, and the Nerazzurri have been linked with the Mexico international as well. Torres, who has often struggled since his £50 million move from Liverpool to Stamford Bridge, is also expected to leave in the summer but Thohir is adamant that neither men have been approached.
Serie A giants plot move for Chelsea attacker Chelsea‘s Fernando Torres is a transfer target for Inter Milan, according to the Daily Mail. The Spaniard moved to Stamford Bridge from Liverpool in the January of 2011 for £50 million, the largest amount of money ever paid for a player by an English club. However, he has failed to live up to expectations, managing just 19 goals in 102 Premier League appearances. Replacement The paper believes that Chelsea will be looking for a club to offer £20 million for their striker so that they can recoup part of the enourmous fee they paid for him. In order to do this, they would have to sell him before the last two years on his £150,000-a- week contract run out, and with UEFA’s recently imposed Financial Fair Play rules, it would be useful should they want to sign Diego Costa or Mario Balotelli, with Blues manager Jose Mourinho recently hinting at a potential transfer for the latter. Mourinho is also believed to be looking for a striker after being caught on cam ...

Mr Predictor   Hello and welcome to Mr Predictor, the exciting column where I analyse the week’s big football games and provide useful betting tips.  The title race has really reached new levels of excitement in recent weeks in the Premier League, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City all topping the table at some point.  With all the big players, big teams and big leagues in action, expect plenty more drama this week, and anything can happen!  Which teams will you add into your bet to help win you cash?   Chelsea vs Everton – Saturday There hasn’t been a draw between these sides in the last 7 meetings, and I do not see this game being a draw either.  Jose Mourinho has still never lost a home league game as Chelsea boss, and Chelsea have not lost at home to Everton in the last 22 meetings.  Roberto Martinez’s team have only won 4 of their 13 away games this season, and despite the presence of star midfielder Ross Barkley, I think Chelsea will be too strong.  Fernando Torres is back from injur ...
STOP HAZARD,STOP CHELSEA ATTACKING THREAT??. Eden Hazard is undoubtedly a special talent&the sort of player that can win you titles, but have Chelsea become over-reliant on the Belgian to carry their attack this season?. Since Jose Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge the Blues have elevated their status to potential title contenders,&Hazard is showing signs that he is beginning to believe he can one day achieve the level of a Cristiano Ronaldo or a Lionel Messi. The 23yrs-old has wowed the Chelsea faithful with his skills since his arrival last season&has already improved on his goal tally over his debut campaign at the club, but there’s a huge burden on his shoulders as the main man in the attack&his team-mates aren’t stepping up on the days Hazard isn’t shining. Hazard was instrumental in the victories over Man City&Newcastle United in the Premier League – demonstrating the damage he can do – but was not at the peak of his powers away at West Brom&was effectively nullified on Chelsea’s return ...
Man City Easily See Off Chelsea Manchester City exacted their revenge on a Chelsea side that has beaten them twice in the Premier League this season with a convincing win that puts them in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri scored the goals that keeps City's dreams of a quadruple alive and the winning margin might have been even more emphatic on a miserable night for Jose Mourinho's men. If Mourinho's previous visit to Etihad Stadium - a 1-0 victory at the start of February - was a tactical triumph for the Blues boss, then this was something similar for his City counterpart Manuel Pellegrini, who enjoyed only his second success in 10 managerial meetings between the pair. In truth, the result was rarely in doubt as soon as Jovetic gave City the lead with a fine low finish in the 16th minute. Chelsea managed just three efforts at goal in the 90 minutes: hopeful shots from distance from Willian and Cesar Azpilicueta that were well off target, and a late Gary Cahill header which ...
City give Chelsea the blues as Pellegrini silences Mourinho Chelsea's interest in this season's FA Cup competition was ended on Saturday night following a comprehensive 2-0 defeat by Manchester City at the Etihad. A first half strike from Stevan Jovetic, complemented by a well-taken goal from substitute Samir Nasri in the second period, gave Man City boss Manuel Pellegrini cause to cheer following the Citizens' recent home Premier League defeat at the hands of the Blues. Outspoken in the build-up to the cup tie with City, Stamford Bridge boss Jose Mourinho was dealt a harsh dose of reality as Chelsea were well beaten by Pellegrini's men, many of whom saw the game as an opportunity to prove a point to the Chilean whose team selection was clearly influenced by the Citizens' forthcoming Champions League collision with Barcelona. With the notable, and maybe telling exception of John Terry, it was as you were for the Blues starting XI which had a familiar ring to it as far as Pellegrini, his players and Manche ...
e teams in the English top tier that have found the net on the most occasions. Nearly every football fan will say that they want to see their team playing attractive, attacking football in which their side scores lots of goals and always wins. Whilst this is more of a dream than a reality, there are several clubs in the Premier League who are trying their very best to find the net over and over again. Here are the biggest scorers in the English top tier this season. 5. Manchester United Goals scored: 41. Whilst it has generally been a miserable first term in charge of the Red Devils for manager David Moyes, at least the Scot knows they haven't lost their attacking touch. With the likes of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and new signing Juan Mata in the squad that's hardly surprising, but now Moyes just needs to convert this talent into success on the pitch. 3=. Chelsea Goals scored: 48. Tied in third place are the Blues, who under the guidance of returning boss Jose Mourinho look like genuine title contend ...

A dramatic Arsenal defeat at Anfield allowed Eden Hazard to step up to the plate and grab his first hat trick in Chelsea blue, as Chelsea cruised past Alan Pardew’s Newcastle side with a 3-0 victory. After a world-class performance on Monday night against Manchester City, all eyes were on Eden Hazard and Chelsea to see if they can recreate the form that has made many believe they are still well in the mix for the title. Newcastle on the other hand were looking to bounce back from a disappointing 3-0 thrashing at home to local rivals Sunderland, and had only won once in their last six prior to this. John Terry was ruled out with a minor muscle strain, making him miss his first Premier League minutes of the season, whilst Jose didn’t want to risk Fernando Torres, who is now back in training. Newcastle had top scorer Loic Remy ruled out through suspension and Cheick Tiote sidelined with a hamstring injury. Yohan Cabaye’s recent departure to PSG didn’t help matters for the Magpies, as 56% of Newcastle ...
Chelsea Latest news From {PRINTING SHAPAS MAI CHELSEA} Chelsea ready to break club record to land Liverpool superstar. Premier League side Liverpool may have to contend with another high profile offer for star striker Luis Suarez from fellow English side Chelsea, reports the Metro. The Reds did well to keep the 27-year old Uruguayan from joining Arsenal last summer but Manager Brendan Rodgers could be under the pump again this summer. Rumour has it that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has zeroed in on Suarez as his prime transfer target for the summer and has also brought his wish to the notice of the Blues Russian owner Roman Abramovich. Suarez though is believed to have a 70 million pound release clause in his new four and half year deal with the Reds, and it remains to be seen whether Chelsea are willing to splash that much cash on the Uruguayan, especially after the disaster 50 million pound signing of Fernando Torres from Liverpool in 2011. The Blues have been looking to add a star striker to their ...

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is out for a month with a hamstring injury he sustained in the midweek win at Tottenham Hotspur. Midfielders Samir Nasri and Javi Garcia are also unavailable, with knee and muscle injuries respectively. Chelsea will monitor the fitness of winger Mohamed Salah following his move from Basel. Salah missed Wednesday's derby against West Ham along with Fernando Torres, who is sidelined with a knee injury. It could be explosive. It's bound to be fascinating. Having been frustrated by West Ham's "19th Century football", Jose Mourinho now has to come up with a plan to counter football from another planet. Well, not quite, but football being played by "the best team on the planet", according to Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood. It's a match that pitches the Premier League's most potent attack against its tightest defence, which in itself shows the massive difference a change of coach can have on the ethos of a club. Last season Roberto Mancini's City were the most miserly team arou ...
Suarez One year Anniversary was against Stoke Boys. Liverpool's new signing made his first impact without even setting foot on the pitch. Dalglish responded to a lethargic opening, during which Stoke threatened frequently down the flanks but failed to offer support to the lone striker John Carew, by sending out Suárez for a warm-up and a rapturous reception in the 36th minute. Within seconds Martin Kelly swept an inviting cross from the right on to the head of Glen Johnson but Begovic kept his effort out with a fine one-handed stop before Robert Huth hooked clear. Liverpool mourned when Kevin Keegan left and replaced him with the finest player in their history. Liverpool despaired when Ian Rush joined Juventus and replaced him with arguably the most attractive team in their history. Tonight, thanks to Luis Suárez's fairytale introduction to the Premier League at Anfield, Liverpool hardly gave Fernando Torres a second thought.
Talk of Mourinho signing a striker in January has constantly dropped in and out of the media with names such as Costa, Jackson Martinez and Radamel Falcao all linked to the club. However, the ‘Special One’ insists he is not going to panic buy on the final day of the transfer window and will wait until the end of the season before looking to add to his striking options, the Metro reports. “We don’t sign a striker now to be an emergency plan to try to score half-a-dozen goals. That’s not the right approach,” Mourinho said. “We’re waiting for the summer to do the right thing in that area, to do exactly what the team needs. “No deals [are in place]. We just know basically what we want, and we know what we want is impossible to get in this transfer window.” Fernando Torres is currently sidelined with injury after coming on in Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United earlier this month. His injury forced Demba Ba’s move to Trabzonspor to be called off by Mourinho as they go in search ...

On 21 August 2011, Valencia announced they had agreed a £23.5 million fee for the transfer of Mata to Premier League club Chelsea, subject to a medical.[19] [20][21] On 24 August 2011, Mata signed a five-year deal with Chelsea. He revealed that compatriot Fernando Torres helped persuade him to move to Stamford Bridge, saying "Fernando got me excited about the thought of coming here. He said it would be good for me here, and that me and him together could be good. I also talked to my family and friends about it as well." [22] On 26 August 2011, Yossi Benayoun offered Mata his number 10 shirt. The Israeli captain said, "I decided to give Mata the number 10 — his favourite. For me, it's just a number, not my lucky 15." (Florent Malouda wore number 15 for Chelsea at the time.) Mata wore number 10 for Valencia and for Spain's under-21s in the summer, and expressed his gratitude to Benayoun. "It is a very important number to me so I'm pleased to be wearing it. I want to thank Yossi," he said.[23] Mata follow ...

Cech: I'll take The Cat out Petr Cech drew level with Peter Bonetti's all-time clean sheet record for Chelsea in Wednesday's victory at Southampton - and it was a result that leaves the Czech confident of winning a fourth Premier League title. In atrocious conditions at St Mary's, Jose Mourinho's side ground out victory in impressive fashion with Fernando Torres, Willian and Oscar netting second-half efforts en route to a 3-0 victory. Southampton's blank meant Cech equalled Bonetti's long-standing Chelsea record of 208 shut-outs, doing so in 457 appearances in contrast to the Former England international's 729.
With clubs reluctant to allow their best players to leave in January, the winter window has garnered a reputation for inflated prices and barrel scraping. Good deals are hard to come by – with Harry Redknapp even likening the scramble for those rare opportunities to “gang warfare” – and recent deals for Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll (who, together, have cost £3.7 million per league goal) have come to typify a market which holds little value to buyers. “The January transfer market has never been the best transfer market and that has been proven over the years with very few big transfers happening,” said former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. “All the big transfers happen in the summer.” Certainly winter spending dwarfs that of the summer, and, since trading windows were introduced in 2003, Premier League spending has, on average, been £321.8m greater in the summer than winter. Yet both the divisions' record signing, Torres, and the most expensive British player, Carroll, move ...

Ladies also love him, so they undoubtedly account for many of his shirt sales. He may not be the player he was, but Chelsea fans still adore him for moments like his famous goal at the Nou Camp and Europa League final goal. Sergio Aguero-Sergio Aguero was the only Man City player in the top 10 list of Premier League shirt sales last season, and his standout performances unsurprisingly make him their standout name in the list. Compliment Theo Walcott believes that Chelsea’s “negative” tactical approach to Monday’s goalless draw should be taken as a compliment by Arsenal. The Blues battled hard to earn a point at a wet and windy Emirates Stadium as a cagey affair ended all square and left the Gunners level on points with Premier League leaders Liverpool. And although the England international was surprised by the visitors’ approach to the game, he feels that it underlines Arsenal’s threat as a fellow title rival to José Mourinho’s men. “It was a shame we didn’t create too many chances but when you have a team who come here to be negative, it’s difficult to break them down,” Walcott told the London Evening Standard. It gives us a lot of pleasure to know a team like Chelsea are very cautious when they play Arsenal Theo Walcott “I was a little bit surprised by Chelsea’s approach. Looking at the team they had attacking players in Eden Hazard, Willian and Fernando Torres. “They did go for it at stages but ...

Branko Vukoslavovic Graphic Design LIVERPOOL 3 CARDIFF 1 SUAREZ SHOW ROLLS ON AS LIVERPOOL GO TOP (Apart from having the good fortune to be there yesterday the best thing was the great support our fans gave to the Cardiff supporters, who sold out their allocation. We loudly applauded their songs telling Malky not to resign and Tan to go!!) A routine home win for Liverpool over visiting Cardiff City sends the Reds top of the league in December for the first time since Rafa Benitez lead the title charge back in 2009. Where the Spaniard had an in form Fernando Torres to fire his side to the top, so does Brendan Rodgers in Luis Suarez and the Uruguayan continued his scintillating run of form with yet another outstanding display. The easy narrative is that the Reds number seven was looking to repay the club for a hefty new contract extension, but that’s well off the mark — Suarez wants to win no matter what and today was just another reminder of that as he joined the pantheon of Premier League greats who ...
Daily Telegraph chief sports writer Paul Hayward: "Luis Suarez is currently the best player in England, so paying him 10m a season to stay at Liverpool for four and a half more years is the best piece of business open to the Anfield board as they aim to secure top spot in the Premier League against chaotic Cardiff City. "For a club who blew 35m on Andy Carroll - and made 50m from the sale of Fernando Torres - lifting Suarez's salary into the top tier of Europe's superstars was a calculation a child could have made. "In a market where Marouane Fellaini cost 27m, and Spurs spent 26m on Roberto Soldado, a 10m annual outlay to keep Suarez at Anfield counts as a bargain, assuming you accept the insane economics of modern football in the first place."
We're heading into the January transfer window, so here are 20 bad English Premier League signings. If you're a Premier League director of football (Joe Kinnear, I know you're reading this), these 20 failed Premier League signings will serve as cautionary examples of what not to do this January for EPL clubs. The list is ranked by how expensive the transfer fee was. 1. Fernando Torres (Liverpool to Chelsea for £50 Million; 2011) Fernando Torres was in decline in his last season for Liverpool, scoring nine goals in 26 games (his worst return in his Liverpool career). Chelsea logic: Pay Liverpool £50 million for Torres, whose best game during a struggling season came against Chelsea. Look at what Luis Suarez does for Liverpool and compare it to Torres at Chelsea. Suarez scored more Premier League goals in 35 minutes against Norwich City (three; would finish the game with four) than Torres has done so far (two). 2. David Luiz (Benfica to Chelsea for £21.3 Million and Nemanja Matic; 2011) In the League Cup ...
Manchester City put themselves firmly in the title picture with a convincing 6-3 win over leaders Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. The prolific strikeforce of Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo were again on target while Fernandinho struck twice and David Silva and Yaya Toure also got on the scoresheet. Theo Walcott marked his first start since September with two fine goals to keep Arsenal in contention but Per Mertesacker's late header was mere consolation for a side ultimately well beaten. City, who have now scored 35 goals in their eight home games this season, fully deserved the three points to move within three of the Gunners. • Mangan: Arsenal self-destruct against ruthless City • Brewin: On this form, Prem title is City's to lose • Curtis: Electric Man City zap Gunners Chelsea got back to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, ensuring they closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to two points. Eto'o too sharp for Schalke. A Timo Hildebrand howler helped Samuel Eto'o set Chelsea on their way to a 3-0 Champions League home win over Schalke on Wednesday night. The Cameroon striker scored his first goal in Europe for the Blues on 31 minutes after a bad mistake from visiting goalkeeper Hildebrand, and fired in a second nine minutes after the break. There was time for Eto'o's replacement Demba Ba to get on the scoresheet too seven minutes from time as Chelsea took control of Group E by matching their margin of victory in Gelsenkirchen on Matchday Three. Following Saturday's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Newcastle, Blues boss Jose Mourinho made six changes to his starting line-up. Joe Hart is set to remain on the Manchester City bench for Tuesday's Champions League match against CSKA Moscow. The England goalkeeper was dropped by manager Manuel Pellegrini for Saturday's match against Norwich City, with understudy Costel Pantilimon keeping a clean sheet on his first Premier League start as City strolled to a 7-0 win. The Romanian is set to keep his place when CSKA travel to the Etihad Stadium for Tuesday's Group D clash, with Pellegrini stating the time is right for Hart to take a break following a series of costly errors culminating in the mistake which allowed Fernando Torres to score Chelsea's late winner against City in the 2-1 victory eight days ago. "For the moment we must support Costel," said Pellegrini. "Joe made a lot of mistakes, he knows. Not just this year, also last year. So I think for Joe it’s a good moment to stop. But I’m absolutely sure that working hard he will -- I don’t know when -- return to his normal position. "But I have confidence in Costel, that ...

The Portuguese managed Chelsea in three top flight fixtures at Newcastle during his first spell in charge at Stamford Bridge between 2004 and 2007 but collected just two points from those visits. However, the former Real Madrid boss is likely to feel upbeat about bucking that trend this time around, as his men head to Tyneside having won their last six games in all competitions. Chelsea has lost just once in nine Premier League matches this season - the 1-0 reverse at Everton in September - and go into this weekend's encounter joint-second in the table after Fernando Torres' injury time winner gave it a 2-1 win over Manchester City last Sunday. And with leader Arsenal facing second-placed Liverpool in Saturday's late kickoff, a fourth consecutive league victory could see Mourinho's side finish the weekend top of the pile. Torres' strike against City was his third goal in his last two games and the Spain international looks set to lead the line once again for the Londoners. Mourinho made 10 changes for the ...
Saturday's Premier League matches Newcastle v Chelsea We say: Away win Newcastle skipper Fabricio Coloccini is unlikely to make it as he continues his recovery from injury. The Argentina international is back in training after a groin problem but has no football under his belt, while fellow central defender Steven Taylor, who suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury in training last week, is still some way from returning. Left-back Paul Dummett, who partnered Mike Williamson in the 2-1 defeat at Sunderland last weekend, is also out with a hamstring strain, meaning Williamson and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa are likely to pair up, as they did in midweek for the Capital One Cup tie against Manchester City. Jose Mourinho is poised to recall a host of first-team players. The Blues boss made 10 changes for the midweek Capital One Cup win at Arsenal so the likes of Petr Cech, John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard, Oscar and Fernando Torres are set to return. Mourinho reported no new injury concerns so Mar ...
LONDON Chelsea head north to play Newcastle on Saturday amid a growing view that Jose Mourinho's side are the team to beat in this season's Premier League title race. Last weekend's Fernando Torres- inspired victory over Manchester City struck a telling blow against one of their major rivals and kept them within two points of leaders Arsenal. Then the midweek League Cup victory over their London rivals at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium confirmed the strength in depth of Mourinho's squad, with the Blues winning 2-0 after both sides made a number of changes. Mourinho's confidence in his team's ability is growing and Torres's performance against City, coming *** the heels of his eye-catching display in the Champions League win at Schalke, provided the firepower that has been largely missing from the Chelsea frontline. The team is beginning to show signs of the strength and solidity that were features of Mourinho's sides during his first spell at Stamford Bridge. EYES ON EPL Ramires is one of the players resp ...

Premier League Team of the Week By Michael Cummings Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea all won this weekend to remain atop the early Premier League table. Not coincidentally, all three teams benefited from impressive individual performances that warrant spots in this week's B/R Premier League Team of the Week. Who made the cut? Full Team Goalkeeper: David Marshall, Cardiff Defenders: Bacary Sagna, Arsenal; Phil Jagielka, Everton; Winston Reid, West Ham; Kevin Theophile-Catherine, Cardiff Midfielders: Jay Rodriguez, Southampton; Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal; Steven Gerrard, Liverpool; Marko Arnautovic, Stoke City Forwards: Luis Suarez, Liverpool; Fernando Torres, Chelsea Goalkeeper There was plenty of competition for the goalkeeper's spot this week. Everton's Tim Howard stopped a penalty and kept his team level with Aston Villa early before the Toffees eventually won. Wojciech Szczesny made a key save in the second half of Arsenal's win at Crystal Palace. But Cardiff's David Marshall faced 31 shots, including 10 on t ...
A well deserved victory... LONDON (AP) Fernando Torres capped off an impressive attacking display for Chelsea by seizing on Manchester City's defensive blunder in the 90th minute to clinch a 2-1 victory in the Premier League on Sunday. After Chelsea substitute Willian launched the ball forward, City goalkeeper Joe Hart found himself exposed on the edge of the penalty area and defender Matija Nastasic managed to head the ball over his own goalkeeper. In a run that encapsulated his energetic performance at Stamford Bridge, Torres raced onto the loose ball and sent it into the unguarded net. The second half had begun badly for Chelsea when Sergio Aguero canceled out Andre Schurrle's opener, which had been set up by Torres. But Torres' late winner ensured Chelsea ended the weekend still two points behind leader Arsenal. City dropped to seventh. Courtesy of ScoreMobile FC (
Jonathan Walters has scored more Premier League goals for Chelsea in 2013 than Fernando Torres
Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed in his new autobiography that he talked himself out of signing Petr Cech 12 years ago when he was still playing for French club Rennes, the Daily Star reports. The former United boss had watched Cech as a fresh faced 19-year-old and though he was impressed by what he saw, he decided that the Czech international was just too young. But now at 31 years of age Cech has gone on to see himself become one of the world’s best goalkeepers after Claudio Ranieri decided to take a chance on him two years later by bringing him to Chelsea. Arriving at Stamford Bridge for £7m, he quickly went on to displace Carlo Cudicini in the Chelsea goal during his first season in England. And since the first season he has gone on to pick up three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League along the way. Ferguson also revealed that he missed out on signing the likes of Paolo Di Canio, Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Paul Gascoigne and Ronaldinho during his 27 years at Old Trafford. ...
MATCH REPORT: SCHALKE 0 CHELSEA 3 Summary A 3-0 win in Schalke, secured courtesy of a Fernando Torres brace and a late Eden Hazard strike, saw the Blues move into top spot in Group E and record a fourth successive victory. The evening had started well, with Torres heading us in front inside the opening four minutes, but for the latter part of the first half it was Schalke looking the more threatening of the two sides. Torres, though, making his 100th start for the club, extended our advantage in the 68 th minute when he finished from close-range following excellent build-up play between Hazard and Oscar . The Belgian, after scoring twice against Cardiff at the weekend, produced a wonderful individual display, and he got the goal his performance had merited in the closing minutes when he raced clear before finishing excellently. It's now seven games unbeaten for Jose Mourinho 's men, with 19 goals scored in the process, and we head into Sunday's Premier League game against Manchester City at Stamford Bridg ...

Torres should have been banned... and I want the rules changed (again!), reveals FA chairman *** Greg *** expressed his embarrassment over the Football Association’s failure to punish Fernando Torres for his recent attack on Jan Vertonghen at White Hart Lane. As Its revealed, the FA’s attempt to expand their rules to deal with case like Torres was blocked by their stakeholders - namely the Premier League, the Football League, the professional referees' body and the Professional Footballers’ Association - in the summer. But, speaking at the Leaders in Football conference at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, FA chairman *** admitted ‘it can’t be right’ that Torres was not punished beyond the one match ban he received for a second yellow card having ‘clearly scratched someone in the face’. *** recalled being here at Stamford Bridge when Manchester United’s Nicky Butt was dismissed for attacking Dennis Wise. ‘Had there been 35 cameras here like there are today we would have spotted Wise gr ...
Substitutes Eden Hazard and Willian netted late goals as Chelsea were made to work for a 3-1 win over Norwich City at Carrow Road. It took the Blues just over three minutes to take the lead in Sunday's Premier League encounter as Demba Ba, replacing the suspended Fernando Torres, held off Sebastien Bassong before teeing up Oscar to fire into the bottom corner with the outside of his boot. After a bout of pressure in the early stages of the second half, Norwich levelled through Anthony Pilkington when he headed past Petr Cech after Ricky van Wolfswinkel's knock-down had fallen into his path. Substitute Hazard restored Chelsea's lead on the counter-attack when his effort crept underneath John Ruddy before summer signing Willian secured the points with a stunning strike. With Torres unavailable, Jose Mourinho had opted for Ba to lead the line as opposed to Samuel Eto'o, as the Senegalese striker made only his second Premier League start of the season. The Chelsea boss was looking to secure his first league w ...
Spurs 1-1 Chelsea - Steffen's praise for Gylfi Steffen Freund has hailed the influence of Gylfi Sigurdsson after his first half goal ensured we took a point in Saturday’s London Derby against Chelsea. Icelandic international Gylfi fired home in the 19th minute – his third Premier League goal this season – as we took the lead against Jose Mourinho’s men. John Terry levelled for the visitors after the break, but after the dismissal of Fernando Torres in the closing stages, we exerted further pressure. However, a winner proved elusive. Assistant Head Coach Steffen admitted there was a feeling of disappointment among the squad after the game, having let our lead slip, but insisted there were plenty of positives to take from the game – Gylfi’s form in particular. “Gylfi is on fire this season, scoring goals and his movement is fantastic from the left coming inside,” said Steffen. “Again, it was a great lay off from Roberto Soldado and that link with Christian Eriksen is growing. It’s lookin ...

Mark Lawrenson, Football Analyst Tottenham v Chelsea (1245 BST) Lawro highlights Chelsea's lack of a standout striker as Jose Mourinho's biggest problem in these early weeks of the new season. On paper, Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Sammy Eto'o might seem like a decent spread of scorers but, in his weekly predictions column, Lawro is unconvinced. "At the moment, none of them are looking like the front man he needs and the loan of Romelu Lukaku to Everton looks a strange decision," Lawro said. "Sammy Eto'o needs to adjust to the Premier League after arriving from Anzhi - if he can get back to the level he was before he went to Russia in 2011, then he can solve Chelsea's striking problems. "At the moment, it doesn't look like he is the answer, but we should judge him after he has played 10 games."
Chelsea to make move and land Premier League powerhouse Chelsea could make a January swoop for Aston Villa star Christian Benteke, as boss Jose Mourinho is not happy with miss-firing strikers Demba Ba, Fernando Torres and Samuel Eto’o. Since his prolific turn at Barca where he scored an incredible 152 goals in 232 games, Eto’o has not usually operated as a central striker. At Inter, he was often deployed wide of main marksman Diego Milito and during his time at Russian club Anzhi, played off of Lacina Traore. Fernando Torres has not been the feared striker he once was for a while, though he scored against Bayern in the Super Cup, and the club were prepared to let Ba leave in the summer before blocking his transfer to Arsenal. Christian Benteke, however, was apparently ready to leave Aston Villa when he handed in a transfer request before his incredible U-turn that saw him commit to the Midlanders. The powerful Belgian had a tremendous debut season in England, scoring 19 goals and rumours circulated he ...

Chelsea V Fulham-Match Preview: Friday 20 September 2013 £50m striker Fernando Torres could be set to start up front for Chelsea after the player didn’t even make the match-day squad for Chelsea’s Champions League defeat to Basle on Wednesday. Fulham striker Darren Bent is still suffering with an injury, so Dimitar Berbatov is set to start as Fulham’s only striker at Stamford Bridge. Jose Mourinho comes into the game on the back of two straight defeats, but has never lost a Premier League home game as Chelsea manager. Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer made 172 appearances for Fulham during a 5-year spell at the club. He is unlikely to face his old team on Saturday with Petr Cech set to start in goal. Ramires back for Chelsea Ramires is available following his European suspension as Chelsea bid to end a four-match winless run in Saturday's West London derby with Fulham. The Brazilian missed Wednesday's 2-1 Champions League Group E defeat to Basle, as did fellow midfielder Michael Essien, who is not part of the European squad, but is available domestically. Manager Jose Mourinho is expected to rotate his options, with Fernando Torres in line for a recall up front, as he puts his record of 62 unbeaten Premier League games at Stamford Bridge on the line against the Cottagers. ~Paul~
HARD TACKLE When Jose Mourinho looks at the contribution of Chelsea’s forward line ahead of tonight's Champions League clash with Basle, it makes painful reading. Chelsea’s recognised strikers have spent 443 minutes on the field in five matches and scored just once. Fernando Torres' early strike against Bayern Munich in the European Super Cup in Prague is the only goal scored by a Chelsea forward this season. Demba Ba started against Aston Villa and would have left Chelsea on loan in the transfer window if Romelu Lukaku had decided against a move to Everton for the rest of the season. Lukaku, who was unfortunate to miss in the penalty shootout against Bayern, made three substitute appearances for Chelsea and couldn’t score. Eto’o, who should have headed Ramires’ delicious cross into the net at Goodison Park, completes the quartet of struggling strikers. Before he made his Chelsea debut last Saturday evening, Eto’o last played a competitive fixture for Anzhi in a 3-0 defeat at Zenit St Petersbu ...

Chelsea: Roman Abramovich's best & worst signings Chelsea opinion: Having recently celebrated 10 years as the owner of Chelsea, we look at his best & worst signings It is in a sense hard to believe that it has been ten years since a Russian oligarch pitched up in West London to change the face of English football. On July 1st 2003, Roman Abramovich, billionaire and owner of oil company Sibneft, awoke the sleeping giant that was Chelsea Football Club, after completing his purchase from Ken Bates for £140 million. Since then, the affairs of the club have been anything but dull, as their owner has overseen three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, one UEFA Champions League and a Europa League title being delivered to SW6, whilst employing nine managers in the process, including interims. But activities in the transfer market in this time have frequently caught the eye, notably the signings of Andriy Shevchenko in 2006 and Fernando Torres in 2011, which both broke the British transfer recor ...

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has revealed he is set for crunch talks with new manager Jose Mourinho over his Stamford Bridge future. The Premier League outfit have seen a player-plus-cash bid for Napoli star Edinson Cavani involving the Spaniard rejected, while the club failed in a bid to sign Radamel Falcao following Monaco's big-money offer. In addition, Chelsea have reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen to sign forward Andre Schurrle , while Romelu Lukaku is keen to stake a first-claim next season, but Torres insists he wants to see out his contract. "He will explain to me what he thinks and I will tell him what I feel," Torres told AS. "I want to stay, to honour the contract I signed, keep doing things right and I want to be the number one in my position again. "Moreover, I think there is no better place than Chelsea to do that, especially with the arrival of Mourinho. I just think that every striker that has played with him has enjoyed success." Torres joined Chelsea in a deal worth £50 mill ...
- Schurrle deal agreed after Son sale Having won the Premier League in two of his three full seasons during his previous stint at the club, expectations are high. Known to be rather authoritarian in his approach, it has been rumoured that Mourinho wants to make a *** of a stamp on the team, with David Luiz and Juan Mata amongst those who could be forced out. Meanwhile, the former Real Madrid manager is the big-name boss who many expect to be able to attract big-name signings. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani are just a few names to have been mentioned of late. While Falcao has instead chosen the French Riviera, Ibra and Cavani could still come to London, and either would be wholly capable of improving a misfiring front line that has seen Fernando Torres or Demba Ba start in the lone striker role all season. With countless below par performances, and respective conversion rates of 11.8% and 11.1% in the Premier League this season, few would deny that that is the area which most needs . ...

Torres confident in Chelsea future 08 Jun 2013 01:44:39 Fernando Torres doesn't think the return of manager Jose Mourinho to Chelsea will affect his future with the Premier League side. Speaking on a conference call on Friday ahead of Spain's friendlies in the US against Haiti and Ireland, Torres said Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge is "great news" for the club and that it will not alter his plans to finish out his deal. "I have three more years on my contract so I am not worried. I know my future is there," Torres said. "To be honest, it is like this every summer. There is talk and speculation. But as I said when I signed my contract, I will be there for five-and-a-half seasons. My future is there, and my present is with the national team." Spain have topped the Fifa rankings for 20 straight months and shouldn't have much trouble against No 63 Haiti in Miami on Saturday as the world and European champion prepares for the Confederations Cup in Brazil. Spain play Ireland on Tuesday in another friendly ...
Fernando Torres has always been a success under Rafael Benitez and the Chelsea striker could soon be following his compatriot who brought him to the Premier League in 2007 to Italy this summer. The Daily Express reports that Benitez has told Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis that he would be happy if the Serie A club could get Torres, 29, plus cash in exchange for Edinson Cavani. It was also reported that the Serie A club are ready to part ways with the Uruguayan striker if the asking price of £53 million is met. “Cavani will leave Napoli this summer,” a source close to Napoli said. “De Laurentiis now accepts that. But he will only go if a club triggers the release fee- no less.” On the contrary, Chelsea had intimated Napoli that the price tag for the striker, who has long topped Jose Mourinho’s transfer targets, is outrageous. Chelsea’s opening £40 million enquiry was even rejected by Napoli last week but a Torres-plus-cash exchange could soon be lined up. Torres, one of the most decorated ...
It has been reported that Chelsea have activated Napoli striker Edinson Cavani’s 63 million euro buyout clause. While the deal has not been confirmed yet, Italian Media source SportMediaSet has reported that the terms have been agreed upon. Chelsea’s first offer of 47m Euros was rejected by Napoli president De Laurentiis so Abramovich upped his bid to land the Uruguyan striker. Cavani’s agent claims that the Uruguayan wants a €300,000 per-week salary which would make him Chelsea’s best paid player. These figures may seem astonishing but it’s just another day at the office for the Russian billionaire. Cavani should fit in well with Jose Mourinho’s plans as his teams have always had (and needed) a prolific striker due to the nature of his tactics. Fernando Torres simply does not cut it, as he scored a mere 8 goals in the 2012/13 Premier League season. It should be interesting to see his role for next season should the deal go through. It’s fairly early to guess what kind of formations Jose M ...
Petr Cech has kept the most completed clean sheets for a single club in the Premier League era, previously set by Arsenal's David Seaman - 142. Fernando Torres scored in a club-record number of different competitions - seven. Beating Andriy Shevchenko's five in 2006/07.
Chelsea Final Season Ratings . It's a bit long but Take a read. .Comment your thoughts .. Juan Mata: 9 At one point when the debate about Demba Ba and Fernando Torres escalated, and Rafa Benitez was asked whether he might play the two together, the manager immediately ruled it out as that would also involve taking Juan Mata away from his best position. That perfectly illustrates his importance. If the playmaker isn't there, Chelsea aren't the same team. He combines selfless industry with individual innovation to both help the side overcome many of their issues and also become better than what they are. That probably explains why, despite what will end up as a gruelling 69-game season, he has already appeared in 62 of those matches. The club's player of the season, and almost the Premier League's too. Branislav Ivanovic: 8 It speaks volumes of Ivanovic's evolution that he has gone from utility full-back to the club's first-choice centre-half. Even more impressively, he doesn't just keep the ball out at one ...
Who is Chelsea's Duracell bunny? As Blues near end of tiring 69-game season, look at the stats... After a 69 game slog of a season which has taken Chelsea to Japan, Romania, Russia and plenty of other places, they take on Premier League rivals Manchester City twice in two days - in America. But who is Chelsea's Duracell bunny? Analyzing the statistics to find which players have pulled their weight. The obvious answers would be Juan Mata, Oscar and Fernando Torres - who have all appeared in 64 matches. This trio currently hold the record for appearances in one season. But in terms of minutes played, the player who takes the accolade is Chelsea's man of steel. Or as his team-mates know him, 'The Beast'. It's Serbian centre-back Branislav Ivanovic. It's important to say that Ivanovic is actually only 2nd in terms of minutes played (4992mins) - but the No 1, goalkeeper Petr Cech (5655), mainly spends his time standing still in his penalty area. Following Ivanovic are Juan Mata (4920) and David Luiz (4915), ev ...
Chelsea 2 Everton 1: Moyes denied parting victory as in-form Torres nets the winner David Moyes shared a pint with his players on the train home to Merseyside on Sunday night before a quick shake of hands to say bye. ‘Players come and players go — managers come and managers go,’ was the Everton coach’s matter-of-fact analysis after his final game in charge. They lost it — undeservedly — after the outstanding Juan Mata opened the scoring and Fernando Torres struck his first Premier League goal since December 23 to win it. It was not the way Moyes wanted to go out, particularly after Steven Naismith’s sweetly taken equaliser, but he will put all that behind him when he clears his office at Everton’s Finch Farm training centre this week. There was a moment when he walked on to the pitch for the briefest of waves to Everton’s fans at the final whistle, and then he was down the tunnel. ‘In many ways, I’m sorry to go,’ he admitted. ‘Managers need good players and they have given me an ...
Europa League: Benfica 1 Chelsea 2 Full Match Report: 15 May 2013 22:45 Chelsea won the UEFA Europa League thanks to Branislav Ivanovic's last- gasp header as they beat Benfica 2-1 in Amsterdam on Wednesday. Fernando Torres had given the Premier League side the lead and the Serbian defender sealed a memorable win in stoppage time after Oscar Cardozo's penalty had levelled the scores. The Portuguese side named their strongest possible XI with Cardozo flanked by Eduardo Salvio, Nico Gaitan and Rodrigo in attack. But Rafael Benitez had to make do without the services of injured duo John Terry and Eden Hazard, with David Luiz stepping into midfield to allow Ramires to play on the right wing. Benfica settled the quicker of the two teams and were soon on the front foot, Cardozo heading over from a Andre Almeida cross inside two minutes. Jorge Jesus' men dictated the play in the early going but proved wasteful in front of goal, Gaitan firing high at the end of another intricate move, which saw Salvio turn down a ...

Rio Ferdinand admitted Manchester United had been punished for carelessness after letting a two-goal lead slip in the FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea. A 2-2 draw at Old Trafford leaves the tie unresolved with the winners to face Manchester City in the semi-final - though first they have to find a suitable day to hold the replay. Ferdinand, who could face action from the Football Association after an off-the-ball altercation with Fernando Torres, told MUTV: "We gave them the impetus to claw their way back into the game. We played some great football at times but were so careless at times. If you are careless you are going to get punished. That was the case. Copied A great description of Luis Suarez, probably the best: "The work ethic of Dirk Kuyt, the flair of John Barnes, the improvisation of Robbie Fowler, the unpredictability of Titi Camara, the never ending spirit of Javier Mascherano, the will to win of Graeme Souness, the trickery of Peter Beardsley, the ability to make something out of absolutely nothing of Fernando Torres, the nastiness of Steve Mcmahon, the back to goal brilliance of Kenny Dalglish, the danger of Michael Owen and the terrifying use of every inch of grass that is unique to him. That's Luis Suarez." Credits to : Steven Gerrard Liverpool's Superman

Demba Ba is ineligible as he has played for Newcastle in this competition,David Luíz is suspended&Africa Cup of Nations winners Victor Moses&John Mikel Obi are not in contention to return. Others are building up attacking momentum though: Fernando Torres has made 3goals in 3games,RB Cesar Azpilicueta has 4 in 4 in the league, while Frank Lampard has hit goals in 5 consecutive Premier League games. Sparta will also be wary of the threat from Oscar, who appears to like European competition - he is our top scorer on the continent with 5. Chelsea are set to use Thibaut Courtois as a bargaining tool in their bid to land Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao. The Metro reports that the Blues could be willing to sacrifice the man they see as Petr Cech’s long-term replacement at Stamford Bridge in order to land the Colombian striker. Roman Abramovich’s £50million man is continuing to struggle for form and it looks as if the Russian billionaire could be set to give up on Fernando Torres and spend big on Falcao in an attempt to bring Premier League success back to the Bridge. Progress The Belgian stopper is currently enjoying his second season long loan in Madrid, helping Atletico reach the dizzy heights of second in La Liga, one place above archrivals Real Madrid. Courtois has been an inspirational figure at the Spanish club after being brought in to replace David De Gea who left Atletico to join Manchester United 18 months ago. His crowning achievement at the club so far is a Europa League triumph in his first season, but he could arguab ...

Isco, who recently signed a contract extension with Malaga, is just 20 but is one of the most exciting prospects in the Spanish game right now, while right-back Azpilicueta has nailed down a regular place in the Chelsea side since arriving from Marseille last summer. The previous holder was Roger Hunt, who took 78 games in the old First Division to reach the 50 mark. Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has urged his side to be more clinical in front of goal as they bid to avoid a trophy-less season. Wednesday's exit from the Capital One Cup, after failing to score in either leg of their semi-final with Swansea, means the Blues have already missed out on five competitions this term, with the Community Shield, UEFA Super Cup, World Club Championship and UEFA Champions League added to their League Cup exit. Rafael Benitez's side also trail Premier League leaders Manchester United by 11 points, and goalkeeper Cech has placed the blame for their predicament squarely at the feet of their forward players. While Benitez has defended Fernando Torres, who has now gone eight games without a goal, the interim boss opted to go with Demba Ba up front at the Liberty Stadium knowing his side needed at least two goals, and appeared reluctant to introduce Torres as a substitute. The former Inter Milan boss insisted his selection was simply down to rotation, but Cech knows, regardless of who p ...

==CHELSEA VS ARSENAL ON SUNDAY BY 2:30 PM== With Chelsea struggling for form at Stamford Bridge, the visit of Arsenal comes at an unfortunate time for Rafa Benitez’ side. Chelsea have won four of their last seven matches in the Premier League while Arsenal have an equally worrying record in recent matches. Arsene Wenger’s side will take heart from impressive away form in the league as they are unbeaten in their last 5 matches away from Emirates Stadium . Chelsea’s home form has been poor enough to warrant boos from the home supporters. Predicted Lineups Theo Walcott looks likely to start in the centre forward role for Arsenal while Demba Ba will likely start ahead of the unpopular Fernando Torres. Pep Guardiola's snub for Roman Abramovich reveals the fatal flaw at the heart of his Chelsea Empire On the Football Association’s 150th birthday Pep Guardiola praised the English game and then kicked it where it hurts, rejecting Chelsea to join Bayern Munich. Hearts were all aflutter when he declared his love for the Premier League, then broken when he pledged his future to Bavaria. Here at the Bridge of sighs, there was no great surprise when Guardiola elected not to stand at the wrong end of Roman Abramovich’s itchy trigger finger. The Chelsea crowd have become unshockable. They have seen Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Di Matteo take a Russian bullet and have given up trying to decipher what might happen next. Only in their wildest fantasies could they have entertained the hope that Guardiola would leave his apartment off Central Park to step into such volatility. There was always a faint hope that Abramovich’s money would do the trick again. It worked with Fernando Torres, right? Chel ...
Chelsea saw a 2-0 half-time lead disappear as Southampton fought back to draw 2-2 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. Demba Ba, starting ahead of Fernando Torres once again, gave the hosts the lead, and Eden Hazard looked to have set the Blues towards a comfortable win when he struck on the cusp of half-time. But substitute Rickie Lambert headed a goal back for the visitors with his 10th Premier League strike of the season, and Jason Puncheon's thumping half-volley with a quarter of an hour to play sealed the comeback. It is the shoot-out of the season, the showdown between two of the greatest strikers ever to grace the Premier League. They both cost £24million, and in the eyes of most observers there is barely a hair trigger between Robin van Persie and Luis Suarez - the gun-slingers who will continue their personal duel for the Golden Boot at Old Trafford on Sunday. With Van Persie shading the race so far on 20 goals for the campaign, ahead of his Liverpool rival’s 19, many expect the Manchester United hitman - who has won the Premier League's Player of the Month award for December after scoring five times in six games - to gun down his rival in one of the most eagerly anticipated contests in the history of the fixture. Yet, according to Anfield skipper Steven Gerrard, Suarez not only shades his rival, but is the best the England midfielder has ever played with - some accolade given he’s lined up alongside Robbie Fowler, Fernando Torres, Michael Owen at club level and Wayne Rooney for his country. And that, Gerra ...
It's quite extraordinary on how the Spanish players have had an effect on the Premier League. From Mikel Arterta to Santi Cazorla for the Gunners, Fernando Torres & Juan Mata for the Blues, David Silva for Man City to Michu & Pablo Hernandez for Swansea, the EPL is laced with playmakers from Espana. Rounding it off are the goalkeepers Pepe Reina for the Reds & David De Gea for ManU.
A new year brings new hope for Liverpool FC. Resolutions were honoured at Anfield last night as Brendan Rodgers' side kicked off 2013 in style with a resounding victory over Sunderland. After an erratic December, when performances flipped from the sublime to the ridiculous, the Reds followed up their hammering of Queens Park Rangers with an equally dominant display. They triumphed with a swagger as Luis Suarez delivered another breathtaking match-winning double. The Uruguayan is operating at the peak of his powers and now boasts 15 Premier League goals this term – the best haul by a Liverpool player in a season since Fernando Torres netted 18 in2009/10. With 18 in all competitions, Suarez has already surpassed his tally for the last campaignand if he can maintain these standards then the coming months will be some ride. Having laid on the opener for Raheem Sterling, Suarez took centre stage with two scintillating finishes. Both of his goals were created by the outstanding Steven Gerrard and at times the ...
FINAL WHISTLE VERDICT: LEVELS LOW Posted on: Wed 02 Jan 2013 Having watched the final one of the four games over the crowded holiday period prove to be a test too far for his squad, Rafael Benitez said that even with the systematic team rotation he has deployed in recent weeks, tiredness may have played a part in the defeat by QPR. Chelsea came in to the game off the back of four Premier League victories but Shaun Wright-Phillips's late goal inflicted the first league loss at home to the team from Loftus Road since Easter 1983, and although we did have chances to score in the game, the clear openings created in recent weeks were in short supply. Benitez changed one member of his defence for the match, bringing in Ryan Bertrand for Ashley Cole. A goalkeeper switch was forced on him by injury and he rotated the three players behind lone striker Fernando Torres with Oscar and Victor Moses coming in, plus Marko Marin to start his first league game. 'We were doing well and we had confidence we could carry on d ...
In yesterday’s Premier League games Chelsea won 2-1 at Everton’s Goodison Park. The home side made a strong start and were in the lead after less than two minutes. Victor Anichebe’s powerful header struck the crossbar and South African midfielder Steven Pienaar was on hand to fire past Petr Cech in the Blues goal. The Toffee’s were unlucky not to double their lead soon afterwards. Croatian striker Nikica Jelavic curled a superb free-kick over the Chelsea wall, only to see the ball strike the post and bounce clear. Everton dominated the early exchanges and Petr Cech superbly denied Jelavic a second goal for the home side. Chelsea slowly came back into the game and got their reward in the 42nd minute. Fernando Torres found Ramires, who fired in an excellent cross that found Frank Lampard, and the England international headed past Tim Howard in the Everton goal. Everton nearly regained the lead in the second half, as Jelavic was unlucky yet again, hitting the crossbar with a powerful header from Leig ...
Chelsea are joining the Premier League scramble for Barcelona striker David Villa. The Sun says Chelsea will offer the Nou Camp giants £12million for the World Cup winner next month. The Blues’ move could spark a four-way battle with Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal when the transfer window opens. But manager Rafa Benitez believes the chance for Villa to play alongside his pal Fernando Torres will tip the balance in Chelsea’s favour. Spaniard Villa has previously admitted: “Fernando and me get on well on and off the pitch. We complement each other and work well together.”
Chelsea 8-0 Aston Villa: Torres sparks Blues goal glut Chelsea made the perfect start to the festive period with a sensational 8-0 home win over Aston Villa to move into the Premier League top four. Fernando Torres gave Rafa Benitez's men a flying start with a stunning third-minute header before a David Luiz free kick and Branislav Ivanovic header made sure the points were safe before half-time. Two goals from Ramires and strikes from Frank Lampard, Oscar and Eden Hazard completed the emphatic scoreline after the break as the Blues matched their best-ever Premier League result to move up to third in the table. While this Christmas present came been gift-wrapped from Villa, Chelsea were scintillating in their attacking purpose and deadly finishing - and could have had more had Lucas Piazon not been denied from the spot late on. The biggest roar of the day was reserved for Lampard, who celebrated his 500th Premier League appearance with a wonderful goal struck from 30 yards in the 59th minute. The midfielde ...
