Manchester United have earmarked Juventus' Former United midfielder Paul Pogba, 21, as their main transfer target after being snubbed by Real Madrid's forward pair Cristiano Ronaldo, 29, and Gareth Bale, 25 Liverpool are leading the chase to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri, 23, after making a permanent offer, while their rivals for the Switzerland star's signature, Inter Milan and Juventus, have only offered loan deals. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits that he wants Yaya Sanogo, 21, to join a Premier League club on loan, with Aston Villa, Crystal Palace or Sunderland the most likely destination. Manchester United are set to make striker Radamel Falcao's loan deal from Monaco permanent within the coming days after becoming satisfied that the 28-year-old Colombia star is "fully up to scratch physically" Midfielder Frank Lampard, 36, could stay at Manchester City beyond the end of this season, says the club's manager Manuel Pellegrini.
3 major transfer stories: - Podolski to Inter is all but done. Arsene Wenger has said "Look, the first proposal was farcical. Of course [we are open to discussion]. After they come back a bit more serious then we will see what happens." Majority of the outlets, like Telegraph, are claiming that Podolski's 6-month loan move, which will reportedly have a £5m-option-to-buy, will be announced within 48 hours. Gazetta Dello Sport claim Podolski could be in Milan as early as tomorrow. - In addition, Bordeaux are becoming increasingly confident of landing Sanogo on a loan deal despite Wenger preferring him to go to another Premier League club like Aston Villa. Swansea manager Garry Monk issues 'lazy' Jonjo Shelvey a final warning PA Sport December 28, 2014 Jonjo Shelvey has been told to "wise up" by his Swansea manager Garry Monk, who says he will not tolerate the midfielder's "laziness" any more. Former Liverpool midfielder Shelvey returns to Anfield on Monday night as part of a Swans squad riding high in eighth place in the Barclays Premier League, but whether the 22-year-old features against his old club after Monk's comments remains open to debate. Shelvey was substituted after an hour of the Boxing Day victory over Aston Villa following his seventh yellow card of the season and Monk believes the Londoner's disciplinary problems are being caused by his lack of application. "I have spoken to him clearly about it," Monk said ahead of Swansea's trip to Anfield. "We can't afford silly bookings and it cost him being on the pitch against Villa because any slight mistimed tackle could have been a red card. "Jonjo has to wise up because that yellow card came from l ...
While Chelsea and Manchester City slug it out at the top of the Premier League, Louis Van Gaal's Old Trafford revolution gathers ever more momentum in the red half of Manchester. The Dutchman endured a tricky start to his reign but seven wins in eight league games have put United hot on the heels of the pacesetters. If the current United side can emulate the teams of Alex Ferguson who were renowned for a strong second half of the season, Van Gaal's men could yet have their say in the destiny of the title. United visit Tottenham Hotspur in a lunchtime kickoff today as the games continue to flow thick and fast over the festive period. 'The signs have been good in recent weeks,' midfielder Michael Carrick told the club website (ManUtd.com). 'We were bitterly disappointed not to win last week (at Aston Villa) but we beat Newcastle and now have two big away games. They will be a good test for us to see where we are at.' After the trip to Spurs, United - seven points behind City and 10 adrift of Chelsea - are a ...
None of Manchester United's injured players are likely to be fit for the next Premier League match against Newcastle United, manager Louis Van Gaal said on Tuesday. Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini, Ander Herrera and Chris Smalling missed the 1-1 draw at Aston Villa and only Smalling has an outside chance of returning against Newcastle at Old Trafford on Friday.
The former Manchester United manager was full of praise for the England international, while he urged fans to "watch United go" when Louis Van Gaal's stars return from injury Alex Ferguson believes Michael Carrick is the best midfielder in the Premier League and is convinced Manchester United will keep getting better as their injured stars return. Carrick saw his start to the season hampered by injuries, but he has returned to the first team and helped the Red Devils win six of their last seven games, with a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa the only blot on their copybook. The 33-year-old has also been named as vice-captain to Wayne Rooney, underlining his importance to Louis Van Gaal, and Ferguson is convinced he is the most effective midfielder in England. "I think Michael's the best central midfielder in English football," the legendary Former United manager told BT Sport. "I think he's the best English player in the game." Carrick has been joined on the treatment table by the likes of Marco Rojo, Daley Bl ...
Another key player is Chris Herd, a regular starter in the Premier League with Aston Villa a few years back.
Manchester United have been held to a 1-1 draw by the 10 men of Aston Villa in a keenly-contested game at Villa Park this afternoon. The result has brought an end to a six-game winning streak for Louis Van Gaal's side, but they remain in the top three of the Premier League. Man Utd saw much of the ball in the opening 15 minutes but couldn't create any chances with their superior possession. Their lack of creativity came back to haunt them in the 18th minute as Christian Benteke bent a measured shot inside the far post from inside the box after Jonny Evans was unable to deal with a deep free kick. United were soon on the front foot again as they penned the hosts inside their own half, but a wall of claret and blue shirts prevented them from carving open any opportunities. After a Villa counter attack broke down, Man Utd almost got a goal back as Ashley Young's inswinging cross evaded everyone inside the box, but Brad Guzan clawed it away just as it looked to be creeping inside the far post. Radamel Falcao ...
The last time Aston Villa beat Manchester United at Villa Park in the Premier League (August 19th 1995)
Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has made midfielder Michael Carrick his new vice-captain Darren Fletcher was given the role as deputy at the start of the season, but the Scot has been restricted to just 49 minutes since the end of August. Carrick, 33, has returned from an ankle injury to start all six games in United's current winning run. "I have three captains," said Van Gaal. "You have a sequence: Wayne Rooney is one, Carrick is two, Fletcher three." Ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Aston Villa, Van Gaal highlighted the sense of calm Carrick has brought to the United camp. "He brings a lot of experience but also a lot of composure," said the Dutchman. "He can transfer my philosophy on to the pitch." Carrick operated in the middle of a three-man central defence in the 3-0 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford last weekend. It is a role he is suited to, although Van Gaal does not view Carrick's switch from his preferred central midfield role as permanent. "Now we don't have Daley Blind, w ...

Whether in the Premier League or FA Cup, Aston Villa's home has been the scene of great triumphs for Manchester United down the years, writes Andy Mitten.
ASTON VILLA v Manchester United (Kick Off 3:00 p.m UK + 2 hr S.A. + 1 hr Nigeria) Aston Villa are missing eight players, with Alan Hutton and Kieran Richardson suspended and the ineligible Tom Cleverley concurrently serving a ban. Fit-again Fabian Delph will make his first start for 11 weeks, while Ron Vlaar could also return to the side. Manchester United midfielder Angel Di Maria could be involved after a hamstring injury but Marouane Fellaini has been ruled out because of illness. Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw and Daley Blind are still injured. MATCH PREVIEW It might be the most wonderful time of the year, but it's probably not the best time for Aston Villa to be facing Manchester United. Not only are United the Premier League's form team - at least in terms of results - with six straight wins behind them, but it's also more or less a case of 'Hobson's choice' for the team Paul Lambert can pick to play them. Already without Ashley Westwood and Joe Cole through injury, Villa will also be missin ...
Fabio Da Silva is available for Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Aston Villa, but Marcos Rojo is out.
Manchester United could now have a strong chance of signing Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman in January due to the Serie A club's early elimination from the Champions League, Old Trafford sources have told ESPN. Strootman's season only began last month following his return from a cruciate knee ligament injury sustained in March, and Roma's failure to progress from their group in Europe has led United to believe they have significant leverage to do an earlier deal for the 24-year-old. United's interest in the Netherlands international is long-standing and has only increased following the arrival of his former national coach, Louis Van Gaal, at the Premier League club in the summer. The knee injury Strootman picked up not only ruled him out of the World Cup but also prevented any immediate possibility of a transfer following Van Gaal's appointment, although it had been anticipated at Old Trafford that a deal would eventually take place at the end of the 2014-15 campaign. There had been extensive preliminary ...

Aston Villa v Man United: A Radamel Falcao start and more things to look out for Seven in a row? Not since the spring of 2011, when United had a realistic chance of emulating the 1999 treble immortals, have the Reds recorded seven victorious matches in succession. Back then, United juggled Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup commitments expertly until Yaya Toure grabbed City’s seminal FA Cup semi-final winner. Louis Van Gaal only has the Premier League to preside over until the 464-mile round-trip to Yeovil on January 4 and against an uninspiring and insipid Aston Villa side, United should be optimistic of recording another win. Will Vlaar impress? Amid speculation United could spend £30m on a player in the January transfer window, Van Gaal will reunite with his Dutch defensive stalwart Ron Vlaar on Saturday. Vlaar is out of contract in the summer and will not cost a third of £30m. Vlaar and Mats Hummels were arguably the best centre-backs at the World Cup, although the Brazil finals stand out ...

10 questions for the weekend With yet another huge weekend of Premier League football ahead of us, we ponder 10 questions that will be answered by Monday evening ... Can the Saints get back to winning ways at Turf Moor? Southampton were absolutely flying when they travelled to struggling Aston Villa for a Monday Night Football clash last month, only for the South Coast club’s form to have dipped alarmingly since then. And while the Saints have had to face the likes of Premier League champions Manchester City, FA Cup winners Arsenal, and high-flying Manchester United in that time, head coach Ronald Koeman will be desperate for his side to get back to winning ways, and quickly, starting with Saturday’s trip to take on relegation-threatened Burnley at Turf Moor. However, the Dutchman will not be fretting just yet given how well Southampton played on Monday evening in their 2-1 home loss to United at St Mary’s. Will Diego Costa end his goalscoring drought against the Tigers? When Diego Costa opened the ...
Former Liverpool and Aston Villa man Stan Collymore believes Manchester United are genuine contenders for the Premier League title, insisting their absence in European competitions is a huge advantage to the club. The Red Devils have won their last five league games and are currently in third place in the league table, after beating Southampton at St.Marys on Monday night. Manchester United’s winning streak has boosted confidence, says Juan Mata Louis Van Gaal’s side have recovered from their slow start this season and seem like they are a threat going into the crucial clash against rivals Liverpool on Sunday. Collymore believes Manchester City and Chelsea will be looking behind their backs in the next few weeks, with the Red Devils back in full force under Van Gaal. Collymore told Bleacher Report: “Manchester United are in the best position out of all the top clubs in the Premier League. They don’t have the distraction of the Champions League, have won five on the spin and will add at least one c ...

It has been a long time coming – and in more ways than one. Alan Hutton’s first goal in four years, and Aston Villa’s first in the Premier League in front of the Holte End since April – what an incredible statistic – settled a tempestuous Midlands derby that saw Paul Konchesky sent off and Ashley Westwood taken off on a stretcher with a potentially serious knee injury. Allardyce lauds Carroll as West Ham climb : Source: Business Insider:– London (AFP) – West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce hailed Andy Carroll after the striker’s brace in a 3-1 victory over Swansea City fired his side to third place in the Premier League. Carroll, who missed the first three months of the season with an ankle injury, scored two headers and set up a late goal for substitute Diafra Sakho as West Ham came from behind to win at Upton Park. Swansea had taken a 19th-minute lead through Wilfried Bony, but they struggled to get to grips with Carroll and finished the game with 10 men after goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was sent off for impeding Sakho. “It is massive for Andy Carroll,” Allardyce told BBC Sport, having seen his side continue their best start to a season since 1999. “Movement in the box is what it is all about. The heading in the box only comes after the movement is right and that happened with his two goals. “He is unstoppable when he gets that space. Hopefully he conti ...
Aston Villa vs Leicester City, Premier League - Latest score, news updates, live match report and result from Villa Park on Sunday, December 7, 2014, kick-off 16.00 (GMT)
ASTON VILLA v LEICESTER (Kick-Off 4:00 p.m. UK / 5:00 Nigeria) Aston Villa forward Andreas Weimann will serve a one-match ban on Sunday for accumulating five bookings. Joe Cole is out with a hamstring strain, while Philippe Senderos, Ron Vlaar and Nathan Baker remain injured. Leicester captain Wes Morgan is banned after a midweek red card so Liam Moore is likely to deputise in defence. David Nugent is a doubt with illness which has also affected others in the squad but Dean Hammond could return from a calf injury. MATCH PREVIEW Tis the season to be jolly, Fa la la la la, la la la la! Villa and Leicester fans aren't exactly dancing under the holly. At Palace in the week, Paul Lambert finally got a first win since signing his new contract in September. His team is unbeaten in four games, which offers a little encouragement. Christian Benteke has his first goal since March. They beat Leicester in both of their previous Premier League clashes. But that's about as far as early festive cheer can stretch. Seven ...

Manchester City are in a good run of form •Scored 3 victories in a row over Bayern Munich, Southampton and Sunderland •Sergio Aguero has scored 19 goals in this season •City are six points behind leaders Chelsea in second place •The damage done early season by the blips against Stoke, West Ham and QPR will hurt them for a long time. Manchester United made it four straight Premier League wins with a 2-1 victory over Stoke City. United were missing the injured Wayne Rooney, who was hurt in a collision with an advertising hoarding against Hull on Saturday. But they took the lead on 21 when Ander Herrera’s cross was met by Marouane Fellaini’s header. Stoke levelled on 39 - Bojan Krkic’s run into the box was halted, the ball rolled back to Steven N’Zonzi who powered in a shot from the edge of the box. United took the lead on 59 – Juan Mata whipped in a free-kick, no-one got a touch and the ball flew straight past Asmir Begovic. In a dramatic finale, David De Gea made a stunning save to deny Mame Biram Diouf and then Ashley Young came to United's rescue with a sensational goal-line clearance in the fourth minute of stoppage time. After all the questions about Steven Gerrard’s future, Liverpool’s skipper played a pivotal role in their 3-1 win at 10-man Leicester. The hosts took the lead through Simon Mignolet’s unfortunate o ...

ARSENAL READY TO OUTBID Man Utd FOR VILLA DEFENDER VLAAR Arsenal are ready to outbid Manchester United for Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar. The Daily Express says the Gunners have already prepared an inviting £8million offer and a considerable improvement to his £25,000 per-week wages. Arsenal are clearly in need of defensive additions in January, and as a ready made Premier League centre-half, Vlaar would clearly fit the bill. Villa boss Paul Lambert has reiterated his desire to retain his coveted star, but talk over a new deal has yet to yield any results. The news will concern United boss Louis Van Gaal who had expected to secure a deal for his 29-year-old compatriot.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is now the joint favourite with bookmakers along with Aston Villa's Paul Lambert and QPR's Harry Redknapp to become the next Premier League boss to be sacked. (Daily Express)

Chelsea have paid tribute to their former manager John Neal who has died aged 82. Neal, who died on Sunday, had a long career which took in Hull, Swindon, Aston Villa and Southend as a player and Wrexham, Middlesbrough and Chelsea as a manager. “Chelsea Football Club is deeply saddened by the passing of John Neal, one of the most significant and loved managers in our history,” the club said. Appointed by Chelsea in 1981 as successor to Geoff Hurst, Neal prevented the Blues from slipping into the Third Division and in 1984 guided them to the Second Division title. He had to stand down in 1985 following heart surgery and was appointed to the board of directors. He never managed again but Chelsea fondly remember his efforts. As part of a long tribute on their website, the Premier League leaders said: “To this day those years when the team that John built flourished remain among the very favourite Chelsea seasons for fans who lived through them.

Match stats: • Wojciech Szczesny is available after serving a one-game suspension on matchday three. • A second-half double from Alexis Sanchez, taking his tally to five in his last four appearances, and Calum Chambers' first goal in senior football helped the north London club to a 3-0 defeat of Burnley on Saturday. • Arsene Wenger's side have gone 23 home matches unbeaten in the Premier League, since a 3-1 loss to Aston Villa on the opening day of last season. • Arsenal have won four of their ten league games this season, four fewer than at the same stage last term. • Standard inflicted Hasi's team's first domestic defeat of the season when they prevailed 2-0 at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium on October 26. • Anderlecht responded with a 3-2 league victory at KV Kortrijk three days later. • The Purple and Whites required a 91st- minute equaliser from Cyriac to salvage a 1-1 home draw against KSC Lokeren OV on Saturday. My daughter could hit harder than Benteke’ . . . . . . . . . . Christian Benteke's red card signalled a late Aston Villa collapse against Tottenham Hotspur as they slumped to a sixth consecutive Premier League defeat but manager Paul Lambert refused to blame him. With the game becoming increasingly fractious, striker Benteke became involved with Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason and shoved him in the face after Mason appeared to push his head towards the big Belgian. Hosts Villa were leading 1-0 at the time courtesy of Andreas Weimann's early goal but Nacer Chadli equalised 10 minutes from the end before substitute Harry Kane's deflected free kick condemned Villa to six straight league defeats for the first time since 1967. They are now two points above the drop zone in 15th having previously made a bright start to the campaign. Lambert felt Benteke's hand in the face of Mason was harmless. "You cannot condone what he did, but it is not like he threw a Mike Tyson punch," Lambert told the BBC. "My daughter ...

England Under-21s striker Harry Kane continued his impressive goalscoring form for Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday with a free-kick winner against Aston Villa. The 21-year-old has been amongst the goals for both club and country so far this season and his appearance from the bench in the second half at Villa Park helped Spurs come back from behind to collect all three points, courtesy of Kane's first Premier League strike this campaign. Elsewhere, Three Lions goalkeeper Joe Hart kept a clean sheet for Manchester City as they secured a 1-0 derby win over Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. Hart kept out, amongst others, the returning Wayne Rooney after the England captain made his return from suspension to the starting line-up for United. Read the full round-up here:

Charlie Austin scores twice as QPR lift themselves off the bottom of the Premier League with victory over Aston Villa.
Tom Cleverley has won 15 tackles in the Premier League, more than any other Aston Villa player this season.
Harry Redknapp hailed the performance of Charlie Austin and his Queens Park Rangers side following their second victory of the Premier League season, a 2-0 win over Aston Villa
“He has scored goals at every level so he is going to be a handful for Premier League defences. I think he will have a big season.” Harry Redknapp’s summer hopes for Charlie Austin haven’t always looked like coming to fruition but the striker made the difference against Aston Villa on Monday.

Vito Mannone has said he and his Sunderland team-mates should reimburse the fans who travelled to Southampton and watched their team lose 8-0. Manager Gus Poyet said Sunderland's heaviest Premier League loss was his "most embarrassing" moment in football. Sunderland scored two own goals, which included a calamitous 18-yard volley from Argentine Santiago Vergini. "I will personally talk to the team to see if it is possible to pay for their tickets and their trip," Mannone said. The defeat was Sunderland's biggest loss in 32 years and goalkeeper Mannone wanted to meet the costs of the 700-mile journey made by 2,500 "special" Sunderland fans. "I really mean that we should pay their tickets and travel," the 26-year-old Italian added. Premier League's biggest wins Manchester United 9-0 Ipswich, March 1995 Newcastle United 8-0 Sheffield Wednesday, September 1999 Tottenham Hotspur 9-1 Wigan Athletic, November 2009 Chelsea 8-0 Wigan Athletic, May 2010 Chelsea 8-0 Aston Villa, December 2012 Southampton 8-0 Sunderl ...

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has claimed that Christian Benteke is "pushing" for a starting spot in this Saturday's Premier League match against Everton. The Belgium international has not featured for the Midlands since April after he suffered a ruptured Achilles injury. Over the international break, the 23-year-old has been building up his fitness and Lambert has hinted that the forward could return to action against the Toffees at Goodison Park. [ 70 more words. ]
Chelsea: Looking to maintain Premier League lead Chelsea go to Crystal Palace on Saturday looking to extend their Premier League lead, while QPR host Liverpool on Super Sunday. Manchester City could temporarily shorten the gap on Chelsea when they host Tottenham on Saturday lunchtime, with Jose Mourinho’s side in action in south London two hours later. Also on Saturday, Newcastle’s under- fire boss Alan Pardew will be looking to secure his first league win of the season at home to Leicester City. Arsenal host Hull City, Burnley welcome West Ham to Turf Moor, Aston Villa travel to Everton and Ronald Koeman’s Southampton will look to maintain their unbeaten home form this season when Sunderland make the long trip down to the South Coast. Roy Keane: Mourinho Is A Disgrace Roy Keane has branded Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho 'a disgrace' for the manner in which he conducts himself on the touchline. The Irishman, who is now assistant manager to Paul Lambert at Aston Villa, was left incensed by Mourinho during a recent Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge. With the final minutes being played out, Mourinho approached the Villa bench in an effort to shake hands with Lambert and his staff before the final whistle sounded. Keane considers that gesture to have been a mark of disrespect, with the Portuguese tactician pushing the boundaries of acceptability with his off-field antics. He said at the launch of his new autobiography, "I don’t mind all that (mind games) but the game was still going on. It’s disgraceful. I’ve seen him doing it to other managers, it is a disgrace. "You wouldn’t do that on a Sunday morning, you would get knocked out." Keane, who has spent time as a manager in his own right at Sunderland and Ipswich Town, has al ...
Off colour Hazard must find his form The biggest match of the Premier League weekend sees Chelsea take on Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, and while the main build-up has centred on Jose Mourinho, Arsene Wenger and Cesc Fabregas, Blues supporters have found another topic of conversation equally interesting -- Eden Hazard. Despite being afforded plenty of game time by Jose Mourinho, Hazard's start to the new campaign has been indifferent, with a solitary goal, against newly promoted Leicester City, to show for his endeavours. Yes, there have been glimpses of his undoubted ability, particularly against Swansea and Manchester City, but last weekend against Aston Villa, Hazard cut a peripheral figure and was replaced after 68 minutes. Villa were there for the taking, perfect opponents for flat-track bully Hazard to punish, but it was tigerish, box-to-box midfielder Willian who stole the headlines in the 3-0 rout. The Brazilian's goal, complemented by strikes from Oscar and Diego Costa, sealed a comprehen ...

Star Midfielder Out with Injury while Costa Starts Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Ramires will be kept out of the starting lineup against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge, while Diego Costa will be starting as the marksman upfront. ‘Ramires,’ said Jose Mourinho, when asked who was unavailable for the game. ‘Everybody else is good. ‘It’s a muscular injury, he won’t be able to play on Tuesday [against Sporting Lisbon] or even against Arsenal. ‘He needs the two-week international break [to recover], maybe he will be back after that. ‘Diego plays tomorrow and starts without problems. The question is always the same; can he finish the game and be in condition to play in Lisbon 48 hours later? ‘I don’t know but at the moment I’m not thinking about Sporting or the Champions League, I’m thinking about Aston Villa and the Premier League. He plays for sure, he starts the game for sure and he’s in a very good condition to start.’ - Chelsea FC
Tottenham Hotspur-Arsenal Preview Arsenal are one of just two Premier League teams without a loss this season, yet manager Arsene Wenger still finds himself the subject of criticism. His players could help quieten the skeptics on Saturday when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Emirates in the first North London derby of the season, with the Gunners hoping to win three straight Premier League matches over their rivals for the first time. Injuries have turned the Arsenal defence into a pressing issue, and Wenger's management of the situation has drawn ire from a large section of the supporters for leaving the squad lacking depth in defence after deadline day. Help could be on the way with defenders Per Mertesacker and Kieran Gibbs said to be returning from injury. The duo were available only as substitutes in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Southampton at the Emirates Stadium, which sent the Gunners (2-3-0) out of the League Cup. Fellow defender Mathieu Debuchy will be out for an estimated three months after unde ...
Aston Villa V Chelsea Preview The Premier League pace-setters will be looking to consolidate their top spot as Chelsea welcome Aston Villa to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon. Top of the table after five games, four points clear of their nearest title rival and with the best goal-difference in the division, Jose Mourinho's Chelsea (4-1-0) have been in ominously good form in the opening weeks of the season. The summer transfer window saw Chelsea bring in star quality in Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, and both have hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge - with Costa the Premier League's top-scorer with seven goals already. A 1-1 draw at Manchester City last Sunday was the club's first dropped points of the league campaign, but they responded with a 2-1 League Cup win courtesy of a second-string side against a spirited Bolton in midweek. Saturday brings another tricky test for the Blues, with upstart and third-place Aston Villa (3-1-1) coming to Stamford Bridge on the back of some good performances. ...
TEAM NEWS: Ramires out, Costa doubt, Cech to start for Chelsea against Bolton RAMIRES is out of Chelsea's Capital One Cup third-round tie with Bolton tomorrow night The Brazil midfielder was substituted during the 1-1 draw with Manchester City after picking up an abductor muscle injury. Ramires will be have the complaint reviewed later this week ahead of Chelsea's clash with Aston Villa on Saturday. Top scorer Diego Costa (hamstring) is unlikely to feature against Bolton either. But goalkeeper Petr Cech could start as manager Jose Mourinho plans to rotate his squad with Premier League and Champions League matches to follow in the coming weeks.
Man City, Leicester, Aston Villa and West Ham had the hardest starts to the Premier League this season
Arsenal stun Villa 3-0 Arsenal stopped Aston Villa going top of the Premier League with a 3-0 win on Saturday. Villa had conceded just one league goal in their previous four league matches but all that changed as Arsenal fired in three inside four minutes at Villa Park. The much-criticisedMesut Ozil put the Gunners in front in the 32nd minute and former Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck scored his first Arsenal goal two minutes later before Villa’s Aly Cissokho turned the ball into his own net. Meanwhile Newcastle moved off the bottom of the table and eased the pressure on under-fire manager Alan Pardew by coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home to Hull, with substitute Papiss Cisse scoring both the Magpies’ goals. Southampton won 1-0 away to a Swansea side who had to play more than half the match a man down after Ivory Coast striker Wilfried Bony was sent off. QPR and Stoke shared the points in a 2-2 draw at Loftus Road while honours were also even in the goalless draw between Burnley and Sund ...
Mesut Ozil helped Arsenal shake off the hangover of a midweek pounding in Germany with a starring role in a win at Aston Villa while Liverpool lost 3-1 at West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday.
Aston Villa 0 Arsenal 3: Ozil shines as Gunners get back on track Mesut Ozil answered his critics with a goal and an assist as Arsenal claimed a comfortable 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday. The Germany international has faced scrutiny in recent weeks after enduring a mixed start to his second season at the Emirates Stadium, but he helped the visitors put the disappointment of a midweek UEFA Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund behind them with an outstanding performance at Villa Park. Ozil opened the scoring with a calm finish inside the box before teeing up Danny Welbeck to open his Arsenal account two minutes later. And Aly Cissokho's own goal completed an incredible three-minute scoring spree, which Arsenal built on with a controlled second-half performance that saw them ease to three Premier League points. Villa's preparations had been hampered by a virus hitting Paul Lambert's squad, and the Scot was forced into a late change when Ashley Westwood pulled out of the warm-up to join Nathan ...

***RODGERS STILL HAS CONFIDENCE IN COUTINHO*** Brendan Rodgers has given his backing to misfiring midfielder Philippe Coutinho after the Brazilian's disappointing start to the season. However, Rodgers has no doubt about the Brazilian's quality or ability. "He's a brilliant young player, a fantastic young player," he said. "I had planned to leave him out of the game against Aston Villa because he'd had a lot of travelling in the international week, and if we didn't have so many injuries he would have been given a rest on the side and then played in the Champions League game. "We couldn't afford to do that. We had to play him, but it was great for him and his experience getting back into the Brazilian squad. "I've got no qualms about him; he's a big, big talent. He has lit up the Premier League since he came to the club. "He's going to have some games where he won't be at his best, but he always gives his best and that's all I ever ask of the players. "The kid is a great boy who wants to do well. He's very ...
Premier League: West Ham vs Liverpool match preview It seems as though Sam Allardyce’s West Ham side are beginning to shake their tag as a boring route one team, completing 387 passes against Hull on Monday night - their highest tally in a Premier League away game since 2010. This match also saw Ecuador striker Enner Valencia net a screamer on his Hammers league debut. The major coup of Alex Song can be expected to shore up an unusually leaky West Ham defence, which has failed to keep a clean sheet this season. Liverpool will be hoping for a more assured performance than they delivered on their return to the Champions League on Tuesday. Brendan Rodgers will be pleased with Mario Balotelli’s first goal in Liverpool colours, as an injury to Daniel Sturridge leaves them short of firepower – highlighted by their home defeat to Aston Villa, where they failed to score and registered just one shot on target. From Manchester United's first win of the campaign to Diego Costa's impressive start at Chelsea - all the best stats from the fourth round of Premier League fixtures By Duncan Alexander SEVENTH HEAVEN Views on how Diego Costawould do in the Premier League were definitely mixed when the Atletico Madridstriker signed for Chelsea. Some saw his bullish performances in La Liga as ideal fare for England’s top-flight, while some looked at his lacklustre displays for Spain in the World Cup and shook their heads. STAND-OUT STATS Liverpool hit only one shot on target against Aston Villa. The only team that restricted them to a single shot on target in a game last season? Aston Villa. Arsenal have already conceded four headed goals this season (one in each of their games), 25% of the league’s entire total. Crystal Palace have never won a Premier League home game in September (D4 L5). Villa did not register a single shot in the second half in their 1-0 win at Anfield. Mark Hughes actually succeeded in making cli ...

Aston Villa v Hull City, Premier League: as it happened
Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen, who has performed relatively well so far this season, should frequent the midfield, while Raheem Sterling seems undroppable at the moment - so should play either down the left or right. That leaves one space - on the opposite flank to Sterling. The choices are Philippe Coutinho, Lazar Markovic and Adam Lallana. All three could do a job against Aston Villa - and then FC Ludogorets in the Champions League - but Rodgers may want to hand Lallana his Liverpool debut, if not just to get the £25 million man into action as soon as possible. Markovic has already made substitute appearances for the Reds this season but his relative youth means throwing him into the starting XI is not necessarily a priority right now. Coutinho, meanwhile, is unbeatable on his day - but his day hasn't quite come so far this term, with his form far from his best three games into the Premier League campaign. With Liverpool's summer signings, though, the possibility are plentiful. Star st ...
