Who has been the best player in the Premier League this season?
SPORTS UPDATE WITH EMMAH ATAI: Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has said that he wants his side to win the Premier League title this season. The Red Devils claimed a 4-0 win over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday to give Van Gaal his first victory in charge of the club. "I want to win the Premier League title," BBC Sport quotes him as saying. "If it is not this year then the second or third year. I want to give a championship to the fans. "My teams are always focused on attack, but it is not our focus, that is to be in the first three. The most important thing is the trajectory." United are currently ninth in the Premier League table. Rio Ferdinand says John Terry has never personally apologised to him or his brother Anton over the racist abuse row in a Premier League game in 2011. Quoted in the Sun, Rio Ferdinand said he no longer talks to Terry after the abuse Anton Ferdinand received during a match between Chelsea and QPR. Terry was acquitted of charges of racial abuse following a trial in July 2 ...
ohn Terry could come out of international retirement and play for England at next year's World Cup, according to the Daily Mail. Everton defender Phil Jagielka believes Terry may not be done with international football after his good start to the campaign under Jose Mourinho. The former Three Lions captain retired from England duty last year, the day before his FA disciplinary hearing over his alleged racial abuse towards Anton Ferdinand in a Premier League game. Terry was cleared of the offence at Westminster Magistrates' Court but described his position as 'untenable' due to the FA's decision to pursue charges against him, who later banned the Chelsea captain for four games and fined him £220,000. The central defender amassed 78 caps for England (34 as captain), scoring six goals, however his international career was not without controversy. After being named as England Captain in 2006 by Steve McClaren, Terry's leadership failed to inspire the Three Lions to Euro 2008 qualification. Two years later, i ...
NEW Luis Suarez INTERVIEW: "Ever since I arrived I have felt bad, they have never judged me for my play but with the attitude that he dives, protests, makes gestures, racism... everything," Suarez told television show RR Gol. "They have never spoken well of me. For that reason, when I was told I could win the Player of the Year award, I said: "I will not get excited as I know that I will never win an important award in England." Suarez also feels like the English authorities are against him, comparing his ban for racial abusing Patrice Evra to that of John Terry, who was banned for half the amount of games after a similar incident with Anton Ferdinand. "Without any proof they gave me an eight match ban, but with Terry, where they had proof, lip-readers, they gave him four, I'm South American and I think that's the root of all of this," he continued, admitting that despite his love for the club - he cannot see himself staying. "Liverpool is a club that I dreamt about playing for as a boy. I have been with ...
Suarez repeats 'victimised' claims Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has again claimed that victimisation by the British media and the FA are driving him out of Anfield. The Uruguay international, 26, said his wife had been left on the verge of tears during a shopping trip when fans mocked him over his bite on Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. Suarez, serving a 10-match domestic suspension for the biting incident, which he said happened after he had "lost it", added that he believed the FA had singled him out because he is South American. He argued that the eight-match ban he was given for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a Premier League match in October 2011 was disproportionate. And he said the case was comparable to that of Chelsea’s Former England Captain John Terry, who was banned for four games after being found guilty of racial abuse towards QPR defender Anton Ferdinand, also in October 2011. Suarez, who is with the Uruguay squad preparing for the Confederations Cup ...
| 'Football must do more to fight racism' | By Mike Collett, Reuters Posted at 03/03/2013 11:37 AM Soccer has failed to respond to victims of racism on or off the pitch for far too long and needs to change its attitudes now, Jeffrey Webb, the chairman of FIFA's new Anti-Racism and Discrimination Task Force said on Saturday. Webb, the president of the CONCACAF confederation of countries in north and central Amercia and the Caribbean, has been appointed by FIFA president Sepp Blatter to review the way the sport handles racist incidents, which have dramatically increased in recent years. He also said he wanted to meet players from England's Premier League to discuss their experiences of racism in an attempt to forge new strategies to deal with the problem. Asked if he would like to meet John Terry, Anton Ferdinand, Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra, who were all involved in racist incidents last season in England, Webb replied he would like to meet players involved in both sides of the problem. "We've been talkin ...
Alejandro Faurlin has left QPR for Palermo on loan. The Argentinian midfielder will spend the rest of the season with the Serie A club after starting just 10 Premier League games this term. Faurlin is the latest in a line of players to leave Loftus Road this month as Harry Redknapp overhauls his squad ahead of a relegation battle. Djibril Cisse and Anton Ferdinand are already out on loan, while Ryan Nelsen has left for the MLS and Kieron Dyer has been released.

QPR Make fresh bid for Porto ace Queens Park Rangers have placed a third bid to sign Porto defender Rolando this month according to the Daily Mirror. Rangers are set to lose Ryan Nelson in the coming weeks as he moves to a managerial role in the MLS and the likes of Anton Ferdinand and Clint Hill are struggling to shut out Premier League attacks. Rolando has twice rejected a move to West London, firstly when Mark Hughes was in charge and more recently when Harry Redkanpp arrived in November. A third and final bid may be enough to persuade the Portuguese club and player to accept after Rangers showed they mean business with the £8million signing of Loic Remy this week. The 27-year-old has been extremely successful with Porto and may now look for a move abroad with Italian improvers Napoli also rumoured to have made a bid for the central defender. Rolando’s move to Loftus Road along with the possible purchase of Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila would completely revamp the spine of the Premier League strug ...
QPR v Liverpool – A Diabolical Farewell to a Diabolical Year Posted on January 1, 2013 by Saycey Harry Redknapp made four changes from the line-up which succumbed to West Brom at Loftus Road on Boxing Day for the final Premier League clash of 2012. Julio Cesar started in between the sticks in place of the luckless Robert Green. The trio of Anton Ferdinand, Fabio da Silva and Ale Faurlin were replaced with the returning Ryan Nelsen, Nedum Onuoha and Samba Diakite. For the first ten minutes, Queen’s Park Rangers competed with a Liverpool side whose form has been faltering of late. The home team enjoyed a fair share of early possession with both Stephane Mbia and Samba Diakite looking comfortable on the ball and Taarabt appearing keen and positive. Then in the tenth minute the lively Luis Suarez received the ball from Jordan Henderson on the left. He took on Clint Hill and skipped past the defender rather too easily, and slotted the ball to the right of Cesar for the opening goal. Hill reacted angrily at ...

Caulker is an exciting prospect for one so young. He could be a stalwart of our defence for years to come. He has developed because he has been sent out on loan rather then staying within the club. A youngster going on loan has to grow up quickly and Caulker has certainly matured. With an England cap under his belt, a game in which he looked better than Gary Cahill, his calmness on the ball and willingness to bring it out of defence reminds me of a young Anton Ferdinand. His season loan at Swansea got him used to the Premier League and then experience of a big tournament for Team GB at the Olympics. He seems to react in the right way so let's hope in years we talk about him in the same breath as Ledley King. "My aim coming back to Spurs this year after three years away on loan was to break into the side this season. They were massive years for me, especially going to Yeovil at 17 to get that taste of first team football. Then I stepped up the leagues in the following years. I really enjoyed it and it help ...
Captain John Terry returns as Chelsea look to get back winning ways in the English Premier League when they host Liverpool on Sunday. Terry received a four-match ban in September for racially abusing Queens Park Rangers' defender Anton Ferdinand last season and sat on the bench in their 3-2 Champions League win against Shakhtar on Wednesday. But the captain should line up this week at Stamford Bridge, in a boost for Chelsea's beleaguered defence, who have let through 10 goals in his absence from the side. Liverpool are 12 points behind second-placed Chelsea in 12th position after their worst start to a League season in 101 years - sitting on 11 points from 10 matches. Manager Brendan Rodgers rested captain Steven Gerrard and top scorer Luis Suarez in the side's 1-0 loss to Anzhi Makhachkala in the Europa League on Thursday. Suarez has been a shining light for Liverpool scoring seven goals, more than half of his team's total, and adding two assists in 10 Premier League games this season. Rodgers' squad dre ...

Chelsea Player Reportedly Threatened Mark Clattenburg A Chelsea player told referee Mark Clattenburg “I will break your f*g legs” during their Premier League defeat to Manchester United, it has been claimed. The Daily Mirror say players and staff confronted the referee after the 3-2 loss, at which point the threat was apparently made towards Clattenburg by John Obi Mikel. John Terry, serving the second of a four-match ban for racially insulting Anton Ferdinand, was supposedly close to the fracas as some players “charged into the room and acted like bouncers”. Clattenburg is the subject of an FA investigation after Chelsea said he used “inappropriate language” towards two of their players, with the County Durham official accused of airing a racial slur at Mikel. He is also alleged to have called the other Chelsea player a “Spanish twa*”. Juan Mata and Fernando Torres are the only two Spaniards who played for the Blues on Sunday. LONDON (Reuters) - Chelsea and Manchester United will ring the changes on Wednesday when they clash at Stamford Bridge for the second time in three days, in the last 16 of the League Cup. The Londoners, beaten 3-2 by United in a stormy Premier League game on Sunday, are severely depleted by injury and suspension. Captain John Terry serves the third game of his four-match ban for racially insulting Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand while midfielder Frank Lampard (calf injury) and left back Ashley Cole (ankle) are also missing. The trio are joined on the sidelines by striker Fernando Torres and defender Branislav Ivanovic who are suspended after being sent off on Sunday.

Branislav Ivanovic and Fernando Torres will miss out for Chelsea after being sent off against Manchester United in the 3-2 Premier League defeat on Sunday. Club Captain John Terry is still banned after receiving a four-match suspension for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand. Frank Lampard (calf) has no set return date, and will probably miss out on a chance to claim a starting position under Roberto Di Matteo. Manchester United are still without captain Nemanja Vidic (knee) and Phil Jones (knee), while Chris Smalling (metatarsal) is likely to be in contention for a place against Arsenal on Saturday. Sir Alex Ferguson may stick with the back line which featured against Newcastle in the last round of the Capital One Cup, with Scott Wooton, Michael Keane, Alexander Buttner and Marnick Vermijl set to feature. Shinji Kagawa is definitely out for the visitors after picking up a knee injury against Braga.

Sunday October 23 was always going to be an epochal day in English football. We just didn't realise that Manchester City beating Manchester United 6-1 would take second billing. Almost a year later, we are still dealing with what happened in that afternoon's later Premier League match. But now we know the FA's verdict on John Terry, we are also forced to see the verdict through the prism of the events that came two weeks earlier at Anfield. That Terry has received half the ban is sure to cause an incendiary response from those still fighting in Luis Suarez's corner over his eight-match suspension for a similar offence. Suarez received double Terry's four-match ban, because the independent panel that the Uruguayan faced found he repeated a racial insult to Patrice Evra seven times to Terry's one jibe at Anton Ferdinand. We await the publishing of the report. It is still unlikely to dampen the fires of ire. Knowing John Terry, this will not be the end of the affair. It was he who delayed the court case unti ...

Watch Your Mouth! August 1, 2012 by John Myers Last month, a professional British soccer player was arrested and faced charges in an English court for something he said on the pitch during a game. Celebrated soccer Captain John Terry’s fate was in a court’s hands. The question: Would Terry’s 600-game career be forever tainted by a criminal conviction for racially abusing opposing player Anton Ferdinand? The question was not whether Terry physically assaulted Ferdinand. The question was: Did Terry abuse Ferdinand with three hateful words? The central fact of Terry’s trial was that he called Ferdinand “black,” couched between vulgar swear words. That was never in dispute. The Telegraph reported: The offending words were caught on camera and broadcast live to millions of viewers across the world from Loftus Road, where Chelsea were losing a Premier League game 1-0 to Queens Park Rangers. Keep in mind these are not fifth graders, but professional athletes. The maximum penalty Terry faced was a $4, ...

Manchester City have taken a huge step towards winning the Premier League title with a 2-0 victory at Newcastle United. - Palmer: Spurs fail to seize chance - Arsenal 3-3 Norwich City Yaya Toure's brace saw City defeat Champions League-chasing Newcastle - a result that, in the opinion of both Roberto Mancini and Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of the match, would be decisive in the title race. After a goalless first-half, Mancini brought on Nigel de Jong on for Samir Nasri, allowing Toure to move into a more advanced role. It proved to be a masterstroke, as the Ivorian played a one-two with Sergio Aguero before curling a first-time strike past a diving Krul. Sergio Aguero missed a gilt-edged opportunity to put the result beyond Newcastle after being released by David Silva, and Toure then missed two chances to double his goal tally - his glancing header flashing wide before slipping when one-on-one with Tim Krul. However, he sealed the win two minutes from time with a cool finish. The result saw City move three p ...

Mark Hughes has snubbed a Premier League suggestion for QPR to form a guard of honour for Chelsea on Sunday as an alternative to the cancelled pre-match handshake. The Premier League bowed to pressure to abandon the handshake ritual on Thursday night, ahead of this weekend's West London derby at Stamford Bridge to avoid any chance of it affecting Blues Captain John Terry's upcoming racism trial. Sunday's match will be QPR defender Anton Ferdinand's first trip to the home of his side's arch-rivals since October's reverse fixture, after which allegations emerged he had been racially abused by Terry, something Terry categorically denies. QPR boss Hughes admitted he was surprised at the league's suggestion his players applaud their counterparts onto the pitch before the match kicked off.
