Yikes. This is a really compelling photo. Industrial farming for meat, milk and eggs makes me really uncomfortable. I see why it has developed to the point it is at now, but I wish it weren't the case. I will try to consume less meat and dairy but I'm not going to become vegetarian. Is there a better solution for humane farming? I'd much prefer free-range organic farms like Polyface Farms--one example I know of. I know it's slightly more expensive but not too much so and maybe a more realistic price of what it takes to farm food responsibly (no gouging, honest cost pricing is necessary). I think what we have now is the lowest-price option but we've crossed a line badly disrespecting nature and life around us. I don't believe it's ok to always prefer providing for humans at the expense of everything else around us. I know that's sometimes a tough choice but I can't just look at human health as the only equation. We're one species in a whole big system of life and if we break the system, we break ourselves.

American Meat (the new documentary that takes a pro-farmer look at chicken, hog and cattle production in America, is hosting a special series of screenings in Texas from February 11th to February 19th. Earlier this year, American Meat kicked off a nationwide screening tour called the Young Farmer Screening Series. This tour takes place at universities, colleges, agricultural high-schools and FFA chapters with 3 core goals in mind: 1. Thank farmers. 2. Support young farmers. 3. Food choices matter. Information on dates of the screenings in Texas can be found below and online at American Meat Screenings (about the film Beginning with a history of our current industrial system, the feedlots and confinement operations are revealed, not through hidden cameras, but through the eyes of the farmers who live and work there. From there, the story shifts to Polyface Farms, where the Salatin family has developed an alternative agricultural model based on rotational grazing and local distribution. Nationwide, a loc .. ...

I have to say I am SO TIRED of everyone, including Food Inc, lumping all meat together and promoting Meatless Mondays. I am ALL FOR CAFO meat-less Mondays. In fact, I am all for CAFO meat-less EVERY day. I am just sayin'. Let's not forget that eating GRASS-FED meat is GOOD for you AND GOOD for the planet. And yes, I did mean to use all those caps, shouting.

Just got about 100 pounds of grass FINISHED beef delivered! As the butcher reminded me, grass fed beef may still eat corn/grain the last 60 days of its life. Grass finished beef eats grass right up until it takes the trip to the big farm in the sky.
Learned about this through Polyface farms.

Hello out there! Zatkovich Pastures has just a handful of chickens left for 2012 - the next batch won't be ready until May 2013. If you are looking for an exceptional holiday meal, or want to stock up the freezer, contact us to pick up a few birds. We are also taking advance orders for our 100% grass-fed Dexter beef, which will be ready in July or August. Our chickens are hatched in Michigan, raised outdoors on pasture, fed nothing but grass, sunshine and 100% organic, non-GMO seeds and grains that are grown entirely in southern Michigan, and processed in Michigan. We are an inspected and fully licensed retailer of the most flavorful, healthy, sustainable poultry on the market. We consider ourselves disciples of Joel Salatin and Polyface Farms in Swope, Virginia. We replicate, as much as logistically possible, Polyface's methods for raising happy, healthy, sustainable livestock. Words of wisdom below from the guru himself. ~ "It is a busy time for the local food movement. We need to be busy because there ...

The Humane Society released an undercover video showing horrific conditions at a CAFO (confined animal feeding operation) in Pennsylvania housing seven million hens, including filth and overcrowding and apparently untended dead birds The raising of massive numbers of egg-laying hens indoors and in cages in huge commercial operations has detrimental effects on the birds, the environment, the eggs, and ultimately on your health; research proves salmonella contamination is related to these adverse conditions The Humane Society is endorsing and promoting new animal handling legislation specific to the egg industry. The Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2012 (H.R. 3798), which proposes a new housing system that would double the space allotted for each hen, is supported by the United Egg Producers, and has a total of 53 sponsors The solution lies in raising animals naturally and sustainably, as modeled by pioneering farmer Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms, expert and author of several books on the subject ...

"We (refering to todays culture) view these animals as an inanimate pile of protoplasimic structure to be manipulated however cleverly hubris can imagine to manipulate it. And I would suggest that a culture that views its plants and animals from that type of disrespectful, manipulative standpoint will view its citizens in the same way...and also other cultures..." - Joel Salatin, Polyface Farms

Joel Salatin, of Polyface Farms has given me permission to publish something he wrote called "Everything I Want To Do Is Illegal..." I am putting it up on The Otherfish Wrap as a six part series. Six consecutive Sundays. The first one is up already and everyone can benefit from reading his treatise. He has an excellent school for new farmers, the largest growth sector in our economy, at Polyface Farms. More new farmers entered the field of agriculture in America last year than at any time in our entire history as a nation! Now, if we could just get everyone to plant a tree, for births, for deaths, for marriages, any ritual or commemoration. Hope is still alive in us!
This is a podcast that needs to be on your "must listen to" list. Joel is a real hero with an impressive background and knowledge of economics, entrepreneurship, history, food science and libertarian, free market principles.
