Four municipal police officers from B.C. were fired in 2013 for various offences, ranging from using cocaine to visiting a prostitute. According to a report from the Police Complaints Commission, they opened 1,091 files last year and closed 845. The office that investigates municipal police forces investigated 88 complaints, with 74 substantiated, four mediated and 207 resolved informally. One officer in New Westminster was fired for associating with a drug trafficker and another New West officer was fired for unauthorized searches of police databases and for sharing that information with an unauthorized person. An officer in Abbotsford was fired for lying about an accident that happened while they were off-duty. LETTER FROM DAVID MARTIN M.E.P. Dear Mr MacAskill MSP and Chief Constable David Strang, The Conviction of Miners and others during the 1984/85 Miner’s strike I write to you as a concerned member of the public. In recent weeks it has come to light that there was widespread tampering with Police and witness statements relating to events of 1984/85 at the Orgreave coking plant in South Yorkshire, and other areas where protests took place as part of the industrial dispute. It is now very likely that as a result there have been a number of miscarriages of justice and that many of the convictions are unsafe. I understand that the Police Complaints Commission in England are now looking into these cases. I am however, concerned about Scotland and believe that there is now a moral imperative, given what we now know happened in Yorkshire, to carry out a full, independent and comprehensive review of each and every one of the convictions brought against those involved in the dispute in Scotland. The Police in Scotl ...
Too many police officers and staff have taken sexual advantage of members of the public they were supposed to be helping, a watchdog said today. More than 50 cases over the last two years showed corrupt behaviour by officers which was considered to be sexual exploitation or assault, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said. It called for more vetting of officers in specific situations, such as those dealing with vulnerable people, and for a code of conduct to set out the behaviour expected of officers. The report, Abuse of Police Powers to Perpetrate Sexual Violence, found 54 cases of officers or staff trying to form sexual relationships with people they ought to have been helping between April 2009 and March last year in England and Wales. It went on: “There is no evidence to suggest it is commonplace, but nor can we be confident that all such cases are reported. “There are considerable inconsistencies in the referral of corruption cases in general to the IPCC by different police forc ...
Chief constable brings forward departure amid accusations in parliament and investigation by Independent Police Complaints Commission connected to football stadium disaster
Kenny Dalglish has called for a full inquiry into the Football Association's responsibilities in the Hillsborough tragedy to be sure there has not been a 'cover up'. Ninety-six people were killed at the stadium disaster at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. A recent report from the Hillsborough Independent Panel found the response to the disaster from South Yorkshire police was seriously flawed. The Independent Police Complaints Commission is now to carry out its own investigation but Dalglish also wants the FA, as English football's governing body, to be examined for insisting the match be played at Hillsborough when there were already safety concerns. "What has happened to Graham Kelly, for instance? Is there no-one who can go and talk to him about why the FA acted as they did?" Kenny Dalglish Quotes of the week Dalglish, who was in his first spell as Liverpool manager at the time of the tragedy, said in the Daily Mirror: "What I want to know now is when is the FA going ...
A blind man carrying a white cane received a 50,000-volt Taser shock from British police who thought his walking stick was a samurai sword. "It felt like I was grabbing an electricity pylon," 61-year-old Colin Farmer told the BBC. Lancashire police officer Stuart Williams said authorities had received several calls describing a man walking through the streets carrying a samurai sword. "One of the officers who arrived in Chorley believed he had located the offender," Williams said. "Despite asking the man to stop, he failed to do so and the officer discharged his Taser." However, even in offering an explanation, Williams said the police had "deep regrets" over the incident and says the Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into the matter. "We have clearly put this man through a traumatic experience, and we are extremely sorry for that," Williams said. In fact, Farmer says he thought the police were criminals attempting to mug him when the assault took place. He said that o ...
Police officers could face criminal charges over alleged changes to statements after the Hillsborough disaster, it has been announced. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said a "large number" of current and former officers would be investigated over what happened on the day of the 1989 tragedy in Sheffield- and during the subsequent alleged cover-up. Director of public prosecutions Keir Starmer said prosecutors would consider if there is enough evidence to charge any individual or corporate body with any criminal offence. Deputy chair of the IPCC Deborah Glass said "without a shadow of a doubt" it would be the largest ever investigation carried out into police behaviour in the UK. "I think I can confidently say this will be the largest independent inquiry that has been launched into the actions of the police in the United Kingdom," she said. The report by the Hillsborough Independent Panel published last month claimed that a shocking cover-up was staged in order to shift blame onto the 9 ...

A Greater Manchester Police marksman who shot dead a father-of-two has been interviewed by the police watchdog for a second time. Salford-born Anthony Grainger, 36, who was living in Bolton, died from a single shot fired from a sub-machine gun while he sat in the front seat of an Audi in a car park in the village of Culcheth, near Warrington. Armed Greater Manchester Police officers had swooped on the car in a ‚Äėpre-planned‚Äô operation. Two men were arrested at the scene of the shooting on March 3, with a third arrested the following day. No weapons were found in the vehicle and police had already shot out its tyres and deployed CS gas. The officer who fired the shot has now been interviewed under caution for a second time by watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission. The Crown Prosecution Service has said it is considering 'a range of potential offences' against the officer - including manslaughter and murder. A spokesman for the IPCC said: ‚ÄúA GMP officer was interviewed for a second time ...
