Plunket Shield

New Zealand has had a domestic first-class cricket championship since the 1906–07 season. It is currently known as the Plunket Shield, reintroducing the name used in the early stages for the 2009–10 season.

CRICKET South Africa (CSA) today named the three umpires who will benefit from the reciprocal exchange programme with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket Australia (CA) and Cricket New Zealand (CNZ).   Dennis Smith will officiate in a Ranji Trophy quarter-final and semi-final match in India, starting next week, while Allahudien Paleker will officiate in two Sheffield Shield matches in Australia in February as will Patrick Jele in two Plunket Shield matches in New Zealand.   “The trio rank among our most promising umpires,” commented Corrie van Zyl, CSA General Manager: Cricket. “It is interesting to note that nearly all our top umpires over the years have benefited from these reciprocal arrangements. That includes the three umpires – Marais Erasmus, Shaun George and Johan Cloete – who will be officiating in the ICC World Cup qualifier tournament in New Zealand shortly.   “One of our top match referees, Devdas Govindjee, will also be officiating in this latter tournamen ...
Ryder has been recalled to New Zealand colours for the first time since February 2012 as part of a 13-man squad for the one-day seriesagainst West Indies. Elsewhere in the squad, Martin Guptill has returned from injury and will partner Ryder at the top of the order, meaning that Tom Latham misses out. Tim Southee will miss the first two matches of the series to have a toe problem dealt with, but is expected to return for the third ODI in Queenstown. Ryder has not played at international level after being dropped for disciplinary issues during the one-day series against South Africa. He has sincehad to serve a six-month suspension for taking banned stimulants, a period which coincidedwith his recovery from the serious assault he suffered in Christchurch earlier this year. Since returning to domestic cricket for Otago, following a move away from Wellington, he has scored 454 runs at 64.85 in four Plunket Shield matches. There has been understandable caution about Ryder's return to the New Zealand fold, but ...

Williamson ruled out of first Test Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the opening Test against West Indies, in Dunedin, meaning a recall for Aaron Redmond after a gap of five years. There had been positive vibes that Williamson would have recovered sufficiently from the broken thumb he sustained in Bangladesh - Bruce Edgar, the national selector, said he was at 95% last week - but it has been decided that it is not a risk worth taking at the start of a long home season. Williamson batted in the nets without too much discomfort on Sunday, but following a fielding stint, his thumb began to stiffen up. "It was pretty close, it was a tough decision, but in the end it was just a touch too early for Kane," Brendon McCullum said. "But Aaron has been in such good form and knows these conditions well. We thought he'd be the better option in this Test rather than force Kane back "He batted yesterday in the nets and didn't feel a great deal of discomfort , but with then doing some fielding then going back into th ...

England in New Zealand 2012-13 Rutherford and Latham in New Zealand Test squad Hamish Rutherford and Tom Latham, both sons of former New Zealand Test players, will vie for one of the opening slots in the opening Test against England in Dunedin. Bruce Martin, the 32-year-old left-arm spinner, could also make his debut although there remains a chance that New Zealand will field an all-pace attack. Martin Guptill's injuries - hamstring followed by thumb surgery - and Brendon McCullum's decision to drop down to No. 5 have created two opening vacancies. Peter Fulton, 34, will take one of the slots following an impressive Plunket Shield tournament in which he made 902 runs at 56.37 to leave him as the second-highest scorer. He last played a Test in 2009 but was due to open against South Africa before the recurrence of a knee injury forced him home. Either of the uncapped left-handers will join him. Rutherford, 23, made his international debut in the Twenty20s against England and then replaced Guptill in the one ...
Peter Fulton has fallen agonisingly short of his fourth Plunket Shield century of the season.
Plunket Shield update, Flynny has his 50 already (off 63 balls) and looking good. The SKYCITY Northern Knights are 72/1 after Scott Kuggeleijn got one through Joey, Brad Wilson in at three.

Local Sports News Newbie Verma bags seven An unlikely cameo appearance last season kept Anurag Verma out of the record books for having one of the most prolific first-class cricket debuts yesterday in Hamilton. The Northern Knights seamer captured seven wickets as the hosts established a dominant hand in their sixth-round Plunket Shield match against the Auckland Aces at Seddon Park. It was the 22-year-old's second appearance in first-class cricket - he previously bowled four overs when making his shield debut last season against Otago in Dunedin as a mid-game replacement when B J Watling was called into the national squad. Had he not delivered those 24 balls, Verma's figures of 7-82 off 19 overs yesterday would have been the best bowling return by a debutant in the domestic first-class arena in 45 years. He was the spearhead in dismissing the visitors for 240 and by stumps, the SkyCity Knights were 88 runs behind with nine first-innings wickets in hand. When the four-day match began, it was hard to disti ...

Hi Baggy Green & Golders, I would like to invite you all to the inaugural contest for the ‘Rashes’ between arch enemies…if not bitter rivals – Kaipaki v Ngahinapouri. The game is to be played on the 22nd of December 2012 at Kaipaki Oval starting at 12pm. Ngahinapouri are putting together a very strong outfit (misfit) that used to play for them in their halcyon days back 10 years ago (when I say halcyon days I mean 2 or 3 days out of 50-60 years). Both teams will be unveiled to the public next week at a media launch and it is sure to capture the interest of Kaipaki Nation. Trophies The Ranfurly Shield, Super Rugby Trophy and the Plunket Shield will all be on display if you want to have your photo taken with them…you won’t get too many opportunities to view all these trophies at the same venue so make the most of it – bring your own camera though. I might even put the Seddon Park Cup alongside them and of course the ‘Rashes’ Music Graeme Stewart who is the coach of the ND men’s team will ...
Fantasy Cricket: Transfer window opens over the weekend closing Monday morning at 10am before the start of the next round of Plunket Shield matches. Trade wisely and make note of who makes the Black Caps with some new faces likely to be named. Wellington Firebirds name their 12 for the Plunket Shield match vs. Central Stags Steve Murdoch (Captain), Michael Papps, Josh Brodie , James Franklin, Jeetan Patel , Dane Hutchinson, Mark Gillespie, Grant Elliott, Luke Ronchi, Scott Kuggeleijn, Jesse Ryder, Chris Woakes, Luke Woodcock
Plunket Shield update: weather has won the day at Seddon Park with this afternoon's drizzle forcing a premature end to the game. The Canterbury Wizards ended on 112/2 (Peter Fulton 68*) but it was the SKYCITY Northern Knights who played themselves into a winning position. Frustration yet again for the guys to come out with a draw, but congrats again on some significant milestones in this match - Graeme Aldridge breaking the all-time wicket-taking record, James Marshall breaking the all-time Northern Districts appearance record, another first-class century for Joey Yovich, a 5-for for G, and 50s from James Mitchell, Daryl Mitchell, BJ Watling and Corey Anderson. Let's put it all together again for the next round against Welly.
Plunket Shield update, at tea on day 3 the SKYCITY Northern Knights had built a substantial lead of 364 and still only 5 wickets down. The guys have just resumed with Corey Anderson on 33 and BJ Watling on the brink of his half-century, the score 353/5. Great foundation work earlier today with Joey Yovich batting well over five hours for his 128 and Daryl Mitchell scoring another first-class half-century with his 73. Next question is when do we declare? :)
Plunket Shield update, congratulations to Joey Yovich who's just raised his bat for his second first-class century of the season! In Auckland you may remember Joey hit Bruce Martin for a spectacular 6 to get to 3 figures, and in Hamilton he did the same to Todd Astle to leap to 99! Liking those spinners! Daryl Mitchell has brought up his half-century batting alongside opener Joey, with the SKYCITY Northern Knights looking very solid now on 227/3, a lead of 243 and climbing. 229/3. Go the Knights!
Plunket Shield update, the SKYCITY Northern Knights have built a lead of 130 at stumps on day two, with Joey Yovich poised overnight on the brink of a 50. The team is three down, having lost Brad Wilson early before Joey and James Marshall steadied the ship. When James was caught behind on 61, Brent Arnel came in as nightwatchman, but was bowled by McConchie - who himself was bowled by Arnel in the previous innings. Daryl Mitchell will resume with Joey in the morning with the scoreboard on 116/3.
