| Lennon played as part of the Plastic Ono Band, whose members also included Yoko Ono, Klaus Voorman, Alan White, and Eric Clapton, a one day festival, as Sweet Toronto Peace Festival, held September 13, 1969 at Varsity Stadium on the campus of the University of Toronto and attended by some 20,000 persons. The event was produced by John Brower and Ken Walker.
Interview with Andy Peebles for BBC Radio (6 December 1980) John Winston Ono Lennon (born John Winston Lennon; 9 October 1940 -- 8 December 1980) was an English musician, singer and songwriter who rose to worldwide fame as a founder member of the Beatles, the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed band in the history of popular music. With Paul McCartney, he formed a songwriting partnership that is one of the most celebrated of the 20th century. Born and raised in Liverpool, as a teenager Lennon became involved in the skiffle craze; his first band, the Quarrymen, evolved into the Beatles in 1960. When the group disbanded in 1970, Lennon embarked on a solo career that produced the critically acclaimed albums "John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band" and "Imagine", and iconic songs such as "Give Peace A Chance" and "Imagine". After his marriage to Yoko Ono in 1969, he changed his name to John Ono Lennon. Lennon disengaged himself from the music business in 1975 to raise his infant son Sean, but re-emerg ...

Yesterday actually, but most people probably don't know that the drummer on this piece was the great Alan White, who has been the drummer in Yes since 1972. Alan played with John and Yoko's Plastic Ono Band and also contributed to John Lennon immortal Imagine album. He was touring with Joe Cocker when he got the call to replace the exiting Bill Bruford in Yes. And that's all good karma!

About an hour ago, I posted a gigantic list of recordings and asked if anyone knew the connection. Sure enough, some friends got it: all the recordings listed were dubbed by Louis Armstrong and included in his private reel-to-reel tape collection, which is held at the Armstrong Archives at Queens College. The contents of every individual tape is listed in our Online Catalog but it's a little unwieldy, searching each individual entry for 700+ tapes. Last week I started a side project during free time at home, creating a document that will list all of the recordings on Louis's tapes. In a week, I've only gone through the first 125 entries on the Online Catalog but the document is already 23 pages! Oh, and it only covers tapes Louis made between 1950-1960; it gets REALLY interesting in the 1968-1971 era (Plastic Ono Band, Harry Nilsson, Fifth Dimension, Isaac Hayes). But for now, in case you missed it, here's a small sampling of what I've compiled, further proof that Louis truly did listen to ALL kinds of mu ...

Bands that passed on playing at Woodstock Declined invitations and missed connections Bob Dylan, in whose "backyard" the festival was held, was never in serious negotiation. Instead, Dylan signed in mid-July to play the Isle of Wight Festival of Music, on August 31. Dylan set sail for England on Queen Elizabeth 2 on August 15, the day the Woodstock Festival started. His son was injured by a cabin door and the family disembarked. Dylan, with his wife Sara, flew to England the following week. Dylan had been unhappy about the number of hippies piling up outside his house in the nearby town of Woodstock.[31] The Beatles/John Lennon:[32] There are two scenarios as to why The Beatles did not perform. The first is that promoters contacted John Lennon to discuss a Beatles performance at Woodstock, and Lennon said that the Beatles would not play unless there was also a spot at the festival for Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band, whereupon he was turned down.[33][unreliable source?] The website claims the more likely expl ...
Today is Saturday, February 1, 2014 Today in Beatles History 1962 - The Beatles played at the Thistle Cafe in West Kirby, Lancs. The club was christened "The Beatles Club" for one night to mark Brian Epstein booking the band. The group never played the venue again. 1967 - The Beatles began sessions for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. They laid down the rhythm track for the title cut. 1968 - John Lennon shipped his Rolls Royce to the U.S. 1993 - Paul McCartney released the album "Off the Ground." 2007 - A limited edition version of Yoko Ono's album "Plastic Ono Band" was released in Japan.
Today, in the history of Rock and Roll, December 15th: 1957: Mitch Miller and Sammy Davis Jr. blast rock and roll in a syndicated radio talk show hosted by Davis. However, MGM label president Arnold Maxim disagrees, stating he sees no end to the fad in the near future. 1968: The Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick appears on CBS' Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in blackface, mimicking the recent Olympic scandal by holding up a "black power" salute at the end of the band's song "Crown of Creation." The network is not amused. 1969: UNICEF holds a "Peace For Christmas" charity concert in London which features the debut of the Plastic Ono Band (featuring George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Keith Moon, and others). It was to be Lennon's last stage appearance in Britain. The Rascals and Desmond Dekker and the Aces also perform. That same day, John and wife Yoko Ono debut their "War Is Over" billboard campaign. 1973: It’s got a good beat and I can dance to it. Aerosmith appears on American Bandstand to pe ...
December 1969: Plastic Ono Band release their album, "Live Peace in Toronto" ... Recorded at the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival festival, it was the first live album released by any member of the Beatles separately or together. John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono received a phone call from the festival's promoters John Brower and Kenny Walker, and then quickly assembled a band in a very short space of time to play at the festival, which was due to start the following day. The group had brief rehearsals before appearing on the stage to perform several songs; one of which—"Cold Turkey"—was first performed live at said festival. Eventually returning home, Lennon mixed the album in a day.
Very Excited to soon listen to "Double Fantasy," the last album recorded by John Lennon in 1980, before he was murdered in his New York neighborhood. I am as excited or more to hear Yoko Ono on this album also! I will also be exploring other releases from her. I have been so refreshed and inspired by Yoko Ono as an artist and as a human being. She and John created this album, and she has just this year performed it at 2013 NY Meltdown arts festival with the Plastic Ono Band in a contemporary instrumentation/presentation. WAR IS OVER IS OVER john&yoko - "attica state" "luck of irish" and other songs powerful activist music/art/expression they were so excellent together her taste in art was like his, which was not satisfied by only the pop format and polished politeness and political correctness. he wanted reactions and imagination art that affects thinking and ideas and challenges to elevate consciousness and Yoko Ono nurtured and empowered that part of his nature because that is what she is also - and tog ...

100 Reason Why the Beatles Suck (59-40): 59 They were too scared to release the "butchers sleeve". Bed wetters! 58 Lennon once sang " I don't believe in beatles/I just believe in me" (God, by the Plastic Ono Band) . Fella, you're the expert - if you don't believe in 'em, neither do I. 57 The Bootleg beatles pretty much invented the tribute band, the mail order rubber doll of the music world. 56 The Bootleg beatles are boring. The Counterfeit Stones are a hilarious bundle of rock boogaloo. Fact. 55 "The beatles, after 40 years have Satan's power behind them. Before the beatles, magic was innocent. Music was a pure and christian. The beatles with "pagan skins" and electric guitars polluted the earth" - Pastor Rick Panning. You said it, vicar. Let's get 'em! 54 They had to have George Martin - the Carol Vorderman of Rock - on board to figure out how to do the stuff they couldn't. 53 In a Room full of engineers wearing white lab coats. What do you think this is, A-level of biology? 52 They had to get Clapton ...

Patrick Carney This week in Rock n' Roll History (1971) - The Number 1 album in the US this week is John Lennon's Imagine. It is the second album by Lennon. Recorded and released in 1971, it tended towards songs that were gentler, more commercial and less primal rock than those on his previous album, the critically acclaimed John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. The album is considered the most popular of his works. In 2012, Imagine was voted 80th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" While in New York, both former-Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison had a short jam session. At this session, Lennon asked Harrison if he would like to perform on Lennon's next album, with recording that was to begin in a week's time at Lennon's Ascot Sound Studios at hisTittenhurst Park residence. Harrison said yes, and would ask friend Klaus Voormann, via a phone call, if he wanted to come to the recording sessions. — in London, England, United Kingdom.

John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970) arguably the first emo album. Here's when therapeutic journaling went new wave.
100 Great Albums Part 1 I suppose the era of the album has long gone. Many happy hours in my younger days browsing the elpees in the local record store. CD's in shrink-wrap don't quite have the same appeal. Moreover, I don't think modern artists generally put as much thought and effort into their platters as happened once upon a time in the dim, distant past. There are exceptions I know. Anyway, it suddenly occurred to me that the 6 CD's in my car CD player were all released this year! What a surprise!!! • "State" Todd Rundgren • "Electric" Pet Shop Boys • "Where You Stand" Travis • "Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Actions" Franz Ferdinand • "Don't Forget Who You Are" Miles Kane • "New" Paul McCartney Not sure how many of these are bonafide classics but I'm enjoying them all and I suppose that is the main thing. So that made me start thinking about some of my favorite albums of all time. So this is 100 great albums of mine. The "rules" are quite simple & straightforward: no LP by more than ...

Fair’s fair. After reviewing the collected works of Paul McCartney, here’s a look at the solo works of Sir Paul’s former writing partner John Lennon. Once again, I’ve ranked the albums from best to worst, for your pleasure and profit. 1. Imagine, 1971 Wow. Take the raw, brutally honest angst of “Plastic Ono Band,” add some layers and orchestrations to soften the hard edge, and voilà, you’ve got yourself a masterpiece. This is Lennon at his post-Beatles peak, singing pretty love songs to Yoko, despairing of his own crazy brain, and taking beautiful digs at Richard Nixon and Paul McCartney. This album is tuneful, gorgeous, and heartbreaking from start to finish. Essential. Best song: “Gimme Some Truth” 2. Plastic Ono Band, 1970 After the Beatles broke up, John went to primal scream therapy. Seriously. That’s a thing. Shortly afterwards, he decided to make a primal scream of an album. The production values were stark and minimalistic, which only amplified the pain in Lennon’s writing a ...

Once accused of breaking up 'The Beatles,' Yoko Ono has a new life as a granny and a pop star. In the warm and enticing article below, she talks to Nina Myskow of 'The Times' of London newspaper about old age — and John Lennon, among other topics. She is currently in Iceland to illuminate the 'Imagine Peace Tower' on the Icelandic island of Videy, paying tribute to her late husband, John Lennon. Ms. Ono seems to be wise and humanistic, even beyond her 80 years. Long and happily may she live! “I know you’re not supposed to show your legs at my age,” she says with a giggle. Then she shrugs and adds without a trace of self-pity: “I don’t know how long I’ve got, so I’m just going for it. I thought I better just do what I want to do.” Ono is certainly going for it, having recently topped the Billboard Hot 100 Dance Club Play charts, curated a hugely successful Meltdown festival on London’s Southbank and published Acorn, a new book of “enchanting exercises to open the eyes”. As for her . ...

He has not only played with the Rolling Stones for decades, he also played with John Lennon in the Plastic Ono Band. His most recent appearance with the Rolling Stones was in their Glastonbury Festival on June 29th of this year.
I never did get the whole 'Plastic Ono Band' thing. It sounds more like something used in one of Cher's myriad plastic surgeries than a music act. If John Lennon had just left well enough alone, we wouldn't have had them around. Not only is love blind, apparently it can't judge musical talent, either. Come on, John, why didn't u just 'imagine there's no Yoko'?
September 25, 1969…John Lennon began recording his composition "Cold Turkey," a song about heroin withdrawal and his battle with drug addiction. Work continued on the track on September 28 and it was completed on October 5. The backing band included Eric Clapton, Yoko Ono, Ringo Starr and Klaus Voorman. Lennon presented the song to Paul McCartney as a potential single by the Beatles, but was refused and it was instead released as a Plastic Ono Band single.

I bought the other day, a John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band cd at McKay's Used Books and Media. It was his 1972 Sometime In New York City album. I am a John Lennon fan. But I admit, I found that record extremely dull and boring. I find alot of his music extremely dull and boring. ( after The Beatles, that is ) And same goes for Paul McCartney as well. Some of the boringesr, silliest music I've ever listened to was the solo music of two of the greatest songwriters of all time. I tried Lennon's Mind Games from '73 and his next- Walls And Bridges. Awful. And Paul.. I don't know what you call that music of his.. but it's terrible. Now, this is just my critiqu and my opinion means nothing. I am a music historian from yesterday and today. Don't get me wrong becauuse I dig alot of the solo stuff. As for the Beatles gang- I prefer George's most of all. Anyway, I went to google the solo albums of the former Beatles and found that most often their solo albums stayed on low charts and suffered great critisisms. Now, I ...

On this date in 1957, John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles are introduced to each other when Lennon's band the Quarrymen performs at the St. Peter's Church Hall fête in Woolton. John asks Paul, "Would you mind if we started the most famous band in the world and at its height of popularity I get involved with a scary opinionated concept artist and sabotage the entire undertaking?" Paul responds, "Fab!"

Judith is watching a programme on BBC4 about Wings, Paul McCartney's 1970s' attempt at rock superstardom. She seems entranced; but as far as I can see they only ever had three good songs: "Band on The Run", "Jet", and "Live and Let Die". (Two-and-a-half good songs -- "Live and Let Die" wasn't that good.) And an ersatz fourth: a redundant version of "Go Now", solely because Denny Lane played lead guitar. Does anyone still have, never mind still play, any Wings albums?

John Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, may be 80 years old, but she remains as creative and active as ever. The avant-garde artist and the latest incarnation of her Plastic Ono Band have recorded a follow-up to their 2009 album, Between My Head and the Sky, that's scheduled for a September 17 release. The…
Yes' 1972 album, Close to the Edge, followed up the huge success of that band's 1971 Fragile, will be re-released as a 5.1 surround remix in October. It is the last album to feature original drummer Bill Bruford until his temporary return from 1990 to 1992 for Union and its tour. According to co-composer Jon Anderson, the title track is inspired by Hermann Hesse's book Siddhartha. The song tracks the awakening of Hesse's character "close to the edge" of a river (and, symbolically, of the serial lifetimes of his soul), where he experiences a spiritual awakening. Bruford in his autobiography said, that he came up with the title to describe the state of the band itself, as he had with its predecessor Fragile. He left the line-up after completion of the recording in order to play with King Crimson, which led to Yes finding ex-Plastic Ono Band member Alan White to replace him before starting a new U.S. tour.
We miss you. Do you miss us? Before either of us gets all weepy, here's something that'll either dull the emotional pain or make you realize we were never your type anyway. That's right, FUZZBOX CHICAGO MIX OOPS POOPS! The first in our mix series where it's all three of us instead of just one. We get pretty noisy here. Enjoy.
40) John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band "Recorded in the aftermath of the Beatles breakup, this raw nerve of an album finds Lennon tackling small stuff like class, religion and being abandoned by his parents."
Is there anyone out there who thinks Yoko Ono has a purpose ?

Oh Yoko! Ms. Ono at 80 Jon Wiener February 20, 2013 | This article appeared in the March 11-18, 2013 edition of The Nation. February 18 was Yoko Ono’s eightieth birthday—a day to celebrate her art, music and activism. She’s done more in the last year than most of us do in a decade: campaigned against fracking and honored Julian Assange; mounted a major retrospective of her art in London last summer at the prestigious Serpentine Gallery, and another, bigger one in Frankfurt this February at the celebrated Schirn Kunsthalle; and made music with the Plastic Ono Band. The anti-fracking campaign has been her biggest political undertaking in several years. First there were the billboards and full-page ads in The New York Times (and also The Nation): “Imagine There’s No Fracking…,” addressed to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and signed “Yoko and Sean” (her son, Sean Lennon). About the Author Jon Wiener Jon Wiener Jon Wiener teaches US history at UC Irvine. His most recent book is How We Forgo . ...

Sung by Ringo Starr, The Beatles covered ''Act Naturally'', written by Johnny Russell and Voni Morrison, originally recorded by Buck Owens and the Buckaroos in 1965, on the UK version of their album Help! which was released in the same year. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic called it "an ideal showcase for Ringo's amiable vocals, but his technical ability as a drummer has long been a matter of some sport. If George Harrison was the "mystical" Beatle, Ringo was the Zen Beatle, with a laid-back, light-hearted personality that led some people to conclude the drummer might be a little on the dim side. Unfairly so, too. Supposedly the (notoriously sarcastic) John Lennon once said, "Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles," but then Lennon also asked Ringo to play drums on the first thing he did outside the Fab Four, the Plastic Ono Band album. There are so many strengths of Starr, here are some highlights: 1- He has nearly perfect tempo. This allowed the Beatles to record a song 50 or 60 times, and ...

Somebody help settle a debate. Please. Who played the iconic, plaintive, pleading, heavily saturated riff on John Lennon & Plastic Ono Band's 1969 classic "Cold Turkey"? I am sure it was God. You know who I mean, Eric Clapton. My friend insists it was Lennon himself. So who's right, or are we both wrong? (I think my mate is confusing it with the earlier but similar, almost like a template for the CT riff, guitar part on "Yer Blues", absolute stand-out Lennon song on the album "The Beatles", more commonly called "The White Album".) Thank you, fellow music-lovers!

The QuarryMen, The Beatles, Paul McCartney & Wings, and John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band are all difference eras. Don't compare them.
Paul McCartney tells interviewer David Frost in a program set to air in November that Yoko Ono did not break up the Beatles, reinforcing the position that John Lennon often took in the years before his death in 1980.

"...the album Fantasy reminds me... of is John Lennon's cathartic 1970 Plastic Ono Band record."
Here's the deal: I'm 30 years old, and I just listened to John Lennon's "plastic Ono band" for the first time. Hearing the track "mother" was like an emotional punch in the gut. I love so much, how truly amazing music can span generations and affect and connect, someone like me, hearing this now, to someone hearing it for the first time 42 years ago.

D.A. Pennebaker is a name well known by lovers of documentaries, music, and music documentaries, having helmed the influential music documentaries "Don't Look Back" (about Bob Dylan), "Eat the Document" (again: Dylan), "Monterey Pop" (which covered the music festival, packaged lavishly not too long ago by Criterion), "Sweet Toronto" (Plastic Ono Band), "Alice Cooper" (duh), "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" (David Bowie's alter ego), and the more recent "Down from the Mountain" (about the country artists that inspired the music for the Coen Brothers' "O Brother, Where Art Thou?") Pennebaker also directed political documentaries "Primary" (about the 1960 Wisconsin Primary election between JFK and Hubert Humphrey) and "The War Room" (about Clinton's campaign for the White House). Many of today's top documentarians were either inspired by him or worked alongside him (like the Maysles, who were responsible for the brilliant cult doc "Grey Gardens"). FFO man!

I'm listening to free streaming radio featuring John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band and more.
Well, Ms. Larier, we certainly appreciate the kind words. And Sir Paul has definitely earned lifelong respect and admiration (except from Narge) for "Hey Jude" if nothing else. And there was plenty "else." But it's particularly interesting to look at John's post-Beatle work in light of Paul's. "Plastic Ono Band," "Imagine," "Mind Games"... Brilliant albums. One wonders what a seventy-year old John would've sounded like at the Olympics.
Couldn't have put it better myself. It's so true!!!

Watched another "Classic Albums" on Netflix. This one: "The Plastic Ono Band" - of course, this one does not have the main artist other than on tape, but great interviews with Ringo, Klaus Voorman, Yoko, and the sound engineers at the console breaking down the songs. No, Yoko's wails and performance art moments are no better, but the songs are superb - as is the archive footage.

In 1969, Live Peace in Toronto by The Plastic Ono Band was released. Along w/ the album there was calendar for 1970. It included pictures & writings by John & Yoko. This was one of the poems: I sat belonely down a tree, humbled fat and small. A little lady sing to me I couldn't see at all. I'm looking up and at the sky, to find such wonderous voice. Puzzly, puzzle, wonder why, I hear but I have no choice. 'Speak up, come forth, you ravel me', I potty menthol shout. 'I know you hiddy by this tree'. But still she won't come out. Such sofly singing lulled me sleep, an hour or two or so I wakeny slow and took a peep and still no lady show. Then suddy on a little twig I thought I see a sight, A tiny little tiny pig, that sing with all it's might 'I thought you were a lady', I giggle,-well I may, To my surprise the lady, got up-and flew away. 2012: At 1 time, I memorized this work. I'd recite at parties.

The video for "Brain of Heaven," the collaboration between Yoko Ono's Plastic Ono Band and The Flaming Lips, is simplified surrealism. The video features what looks like Wayne Coyne and possibly Yoko Ono in a half technicolor laser show and half black-and-white impression needle toy (see here).
Meh, i've settled with the Plastic Ono Band! G'night people.
