Pikes Peak & America The Beautiful
Pikes Peak (originally Pike's Peak) is a mountain in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, 10 miles (16 km) west of Colorado Springs, Colorado, in El Paso County in the United States of America. America the Beautiful is an American patriotic song. /5
While I 100% concur that those who are offended by the multi-lingual rendition of the America the Beautiful are clearly labeling themselves a bigot and a racist, I have been disappointed in the misinformation I have seen spread on the internet today, saying that the composer was a Russian immigrant, or that the first draft of the song was in a different language, etc... Here are some "factual type facts" which can be independently researched and confirmed about Katherine Lee Bates, composer of America the Beautiful: 1. Lifelong Republican until her mid 60's (died at 69). 2. She switched to the Democratic party noting increasing xenophobia in the Republican party at that time, due to their resistance to joining the League Of Nations. (it can therefore be inferred that she would be proud to have her song sung in multiple languages). 3. She composed the first draft of America The Beautiful in 1893 after viewing Pikes Peak, in Colorado. That summer she was working at Colorado College teaching English. 4. She ...
America The Beautiful, written by Katherine Lee Bates, was inspired by the view from Pikes Peak.
The first European-American to climb the peak came 14 years after Pike in the summer of 1820. Edwin James, a young student who had just graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont, signed on as the relief botanist for the Long Expedition after the first botanist had died. The expedition explored the South Platte River up as far as present-day Denver, then turned south and passed close to what James called "Pike's highest peak." James and two other men left the expedition, camped on the plains, and climbed the peak in two days, encountering little difficulty. Along the way, he was the first to describe the blue columbine, Colorado's state flower. Gold was discovered in the area of present-day Denver in 1858, and newspapers referred to the gold-mining area as "Pike's Peak." Pike's Peak or Bust became the slogan of the Colorado Gold Rush (see also Fifty-Niner). This was more due to Pikes Peak's visibility to gold seekers traveling west across the plains than any actual significant gold find anywhere near Pi ...
"America The Beautiful" was written by professor, poet, and writer Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929) after an inspiring trip to the top of Pikes Peak, Colorado, in 1863. She said, "All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with sea-like expanse.". Such was the inspiration for this hymn. I will mediate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty. Psalm 145:5
Pikes Peak triggered the poem by Kathryn Lee Bates. "America The Beautiful" became the song. Now...fires burn...
I'm looking at the NOAA wildfire map of Colorado Springs. Anita and I took a trip to Albuquerque NM, Mesa Verde along 550 (Denver and Rio Grande Skyway) then 50 to Colorado Springs, CO in 1980. The drive was beautiful and breathtaking. "Colorado Springs, Colo. (AP)...The fire sent plumes of gray and white smoke over the area that obscured at times Pikes Peak, the most-summited high-elevation mountain in the nation and inspiration for the song "America The Beautiful..."" We took the Cog Railway to Pikes Peak. We had a wonderful trip.
Had a great day with my girls. Sister, neice, sister-in-law, step Mom. Rode the cog train up to Pikes Peak. Only lived here all my life and never have done that. Haven't been to the top of Pikes Peak in 20 years. When you hear the song "America the beautiful" that's what she was talking about!! Good, food, good wine, good conversation ended the day.
Inspired by a trip to summit of Pikes Peak, Katharine Lee Bates penned what became our most famous poem/song, "America the Beautiful"
