TONIGHT!! Former Albany Civil Rights Institute Executive Director Dr. Lee Formwalt will read excerpts from his new book, Looking Back, Moving Forward: The Southwest Georgia Freedom Struggle, 1814-2014. Sponsored by Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, MillerCoors, and the Heritage Bank of the South, the book chronicles the history of the African American freedom struggle in Southwest Georgia, from slavery in the early 19th century, through the 1960s civil rights movement, and up to the present. Proceeds from the sale of the book, to be published later this year, will go to the support of the Albany Civil Rights Institute. The reading will be held at 6:30pm April 15 at ACRI, 326 Whitney Avenue.
Mrs. Betty Lucille Wilson, 76, of Albany, passed away, Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Services honoring the life of Mrs. Wilson will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 15, 2013 in the chapel of Hall and Hall Funeral Home. Reverend Robin Chaplin will officiate. Born July 6, 1936 in Jacksonville, FL, Mrs. Wilson was the daughter of the late Percy Sommers and the late Katie Crews Sommers. She enjoyed cooking and fishing and loved all of her family. She was of the Christian faith and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother sister and friend. Survivors include her husband, Grover Wilson; son, David Paul (Piper) Johnson of Cleveland, GA; daughter, Angela J (Richard) Turner of Gordon, GA; brother, Earl (Pearl) Crews of Jacksonville, FL; sisters, Ailene Rigdon and Maisie (Leon) Baggs all of Jacksonville, FL; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Joseph W. Albea August 9, 1930 - June 5, 2013 Joseph W. (Joe) Albea, (GySgt, USMC, Ret.), 82, of Albany, GA, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Mathews Funeral Home. Rev. Bobby Moye will officiate. Interment will follow at Andersonville National Cemetery with military honors. A native of Greenwood, SC, Mr. Albea had resided in Albany, GA since 1976 moving from Riverton, NJ. He was retired from the United States Marine Corps after twenty three years and served in Korea. Mr. Albea was also employed at the Marine Corps Logistic Base in Albany, GA before his retirement. Mr. Albea was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge # 1285, The Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elk, Lodge # 713, a life member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post # 2785, River Pointe Golf Club and The Laidback Golfers. Funeral services honoring the life of Stacey will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 8, 2013 at Victory Tabernacle Assembly of God. Pastor Eddie Adams and Reverend A.B. Stroud will officiate. Born October 17, 1967 in Port Jervis, NY, Stacey was a 1986 graduate of Camp LeJeune High School, a 1990 graduate of Ward Stone College of Miami, FL, attended Darton College and graduated from Albany Technical School in 2007 with a degree in practical nursing.
