Spratly Islands History Retired Navy Capt. Domingo Tucay’s eyes light up as he talks about those heady days when the Philippines could send ships and men uncontested to the Spratly Islands. The late 1960s marked the peak of the Philippine Navy. Although most of its warships were handed down from the United States, it was the envy of the region. Southeast Asian neighbors were only beginning to form their own navies and looked to the Philippines for inspiration and lessons on maritime defense. Capt. Tucay, a member of Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class 65, worked as the country’s naval attaché in Washington DC in the 80s. When he retired, he and his family decided to stay and they now live in Mclean, Virginia. He was a young lieutenant assigned to the intelligence section of a top secret task force dispatched by then President Ferdinand Marcos sometime in 1970-71 to lay claim on 7 islands in the South China Sea. “We had a Marine contingent, a naval construction battalion and of course the Navy t ...

Kadayawan security measures now in place It’s all systems go for the Kadayawan sa Dabaw Festival next month with all the security measures set in place. In an interview after yesterday’s flag ceremony at City Hall, Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC) chief Francisco Villaroman said the possible security problems have already been identified. “We already have the security plans for the Kadayawan in place. Just like last year, we have identified all possible problems. We have done it in the past and we can do it now,” Villaroman said. He said they are now closely coordinating with the other concerned agencies and stakeholders to ensure that the celebration will be peaceful. He said the city will field around 3,000 security personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Navy, and the PSSCC. “The authorities have hardened the target so it won’t be easy for them to penetrate the city,” he said. Can somebody enlighten me? I was in Sta. Cruz, Zambales last Saturday and Sunday and either I got totally no cellular phone network signal through Sun or it is very low that I really had a hard time sending or receiving text messages or phone calls. This was also the case when I had my trip back to Manila on Sunday night. From Sta. Cruz at 6 PM to Olongapo City at 10:30 PM, I only got a signal when we were traversing San Marcelino at about 10 PM. What's with this? Is it the Sun network's failure to have a Zambales-wide coverage? But my friend who patronizes Smart is having a hard time also with his mobile communication. I just don't know with Globe. Somebody whispered to me that this is because of politics in the province. What?!!! Can some concerned quarters take a look on this? Also, I noticed and was told that those ships that I saw from afar in a coastal town in Sta. Cruz are China-owned vessels that are hauling soil and some minerals from a mining area in the said coastal town and delivers it to thei ...

AFP resupplies troops at Ayungin THE military again resupplied its small garrison at the Ayungin Shoal even after a tense incident last March when two Chinese ships harassed a fishing vessel, also carrying journalists and troops, which was sent to resupply the Philippine Marines station there. The military’s Western Command (Westcom) confirmed on Saturday that it conducted an aerial resupply mission for troops stationed at BRP Sierra Madre (LST57) which is grounded at the Ayungin Shoal, according to Lt. Gen. Roy Deveraturda. Deveraturda said he sent a Navy Islander plane to dropped food and water for the troops around 9:15 a.m. Saturday. “At the proper time, we need to resupply our troops there. We will not abandon that post because that place is ours,” said Deveraturda. The dropped supplies also included letters of encouragement to the soldiers written by students that were gathered by concerned citizens and civic groups to show their support for our soldiers who have to spend between three to six ...

To quote from the article: "President Aquino on Wednesday hailed the Philippine Navy for its tenacity in guarding Philippine territories being claimed by China, saying its leaders and sailors did not allow lack in matériel to shirk from their sworn duties. The President made the remarks as the Navy Flag Officer in Command (FOIC), Vice Adm. Jose Luis Alano, relinquished the Navy’s helm to Rear Adm. Jesus Millan at sunset, a Navy tradition. Millan told the Inquirer in a phone interview that he would continue the programs spearheaded by Alano and other Navy chiefs before him under the Navy Sail Plan. The plan is designed to build a Philippine Navy “that is more responsive” to both its traditional duties of territorial defense and new security challenges, such as climate change."

IJC Highlight of the Week Soldier fulfills childhood dream by deploying with 4th Infantry Division Story by Sgt. Antony Lee KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – When Pfc. Clark Cepeda took his two sons to get their hair cut near their home in Marlton, N.J., in 2013, he came across a military recruiting station close to the barber shop. It had been less than a year since he moved his family from the Philippines to the United States, and Cepeda’s dream as a child growing up in the Philippines was to serve in the military. His grandfather, who he helped take care of, was a decorated Filipino veteran who fought for his country during World War II and was a survivor of the Bataan Death March. His service was a major influence for Cepeda’s childhood dream. Cepeda had tried to join the Philippine Navy years before but was turned down, he said. “I thought I could no longer be in the military because of my age,” Cepeda, who was 34 at the time, said. Despite his doubts, he talked to a recruiter and when he le ...

Oooohh im touched. LOL US helped the Philippine Navy in Ayungin mission
US helped the Philippine Navy in Ayungin mission. Details:
Preferring the torch over tact, retired policeman and former town mayor Abner Afuang set the Chinese flag on fire for the second time this year to denounce the reported harassment of a Philippine Navy vessel by the Chinese coast guard on Ayungin Shoal last week.
"A dilapidated Philippine Navy ship LT 57 (Sierra Madre) with Philippine troops deployed on board is anchored off Second Thomas Shoal, locally known as Ayungin Shoal, Sunday, March 30, 2014 off South China Sea. On Saturday, China Coast Guard attempted to block the Philippine Government vessel AM700 carrying fresh troops and supplies, but the latter successfully managed to docked beside the ship to replace troops who were deployed for five months. (AP Photo/Bullit Marquez)"... AND WE'RE GOING TO FIGHT CHINA WITH THESE ;-) :-( :-(
Despite the PHILIPPINE NAVY SHIP BRP SIERRA MADRE's physical appearance, its most essential posture is, while the CHINESE are on the routine of constantly patrolling the area, to paraphrase one PHILIPPINE military official, " IT IS ( ALREADY ) ANCHORED ", suggesting that it has established its occupancy and that it is there to stubbornly stay and protect the PHILIPPINES' sovereignty and interests in the West Philippine Sea. What is certain is that its defenders, meagerly comprised of less than a squad strong, would fight with everything at their disposal. Comparatively, they may be up against the might of the CHINESE NAVY but sometimes symbolism is more important than tangibles.

OPERATION MERDEKA The codename for the destabilization plan was Operation Merdeka. The plan involved the recruitment of nearly 200 Tausug and Sama Muslims aged 18 to 30 from Sulu and Tawi-Tawi and their training in the island- town of Simunul in Tawi-Tawi. Simunul was where the first Arab missionary Makhdum built the first mosque in the Philippines in the 14th century. The recruits felt giddy about the promise not only of a monthly allowance, but also over the prospect of eventually becoming a member of an elite unit in the Philippine Armed Forces. That meant, among other benefits, guns, which Muslims regard as very precious possessions. So from August to December 1967, the young recruits underwent training in Simunul. The name of the the commando unit: Jabidah. On December 30 that year, from 135 to 180 recruits boarded a Philippine Navy vessel for the island of Corregidor in Luzon for "specialized training." This second phase of the training turned mutinous when the recruits discovered their true mission ...

THE OTHER SIDE | China's position on the territorial disputes with the Philippines By: Zhang Hua (Chinese embassy in the Philippines) April 3, 2014 12:05 PM NOTE: The author is the spokesperson of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of the Philippines. InterAksyon.com is posting this position paper, which was sent to media Thursday, to present the other side in the continuing dispute between the Philippines and China over the West Philippine Sea and help explain the issue. On March 30, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs stated that it submitted its Memorial to the Arbitral Tribunal that is hearing the case it brought against China under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in January 2013. A lot of media friends ask for comments on this issue. In order that China's position is clearly understood, I would like to elaborate on the following issues. 1. The Philippines' initiation of and push for international arbitration has undermined China-Philippines rela ...

WHAT if the people tasked to decide the fate of those suspected of violating the Philippine Military Academy’s (PMA) Honor Code—“not to lie, cheat or steal nor tolerate anyone who does”—are the very same people defying its precepts? This, in a nutshell, is our question after we talked to Persida Acosta, chief of the Public Attorney’s Office, on our radio program Karambola sa DWIZ regarding the case of dismissed PMA Cadet First Class Aldrin Jeff Cudia. Cudia was all set to graduate as class salutatorian of the Siklab Diwa Class of 2014, and was the leading candidate in the roster of cadets who wished to join the Philippine Navy, when he was unceremoniously yanked out of the PMA for allegedly lying on why he was late for his next class by two minutes. On the surface, it appears that the military academy was within the bounds of its mandate and authority when it opted to adopt the strict implementation of the Honor Code. It now appears, however, that there is more to this subject than meets the e ...

HONOR CODE Thieves and thugs are reputed to zealously guard the primacy of their honor code, like Omertà. Break your silence and your peers will break your neck. Or your precious torso gets peppered with bullets. Or your legs get cast in Portland cement, and down you go to the bottom of the ocean. In any fraternal organization, there are rules to be followed. This keeps the organization intact. It provides direction as basis for enforcing discipline. It distinguishes members from non-members. Handshakes enable a Mason to know if one belongs to the association. Usually, it becomes necessary to guard against possible breakup. One anecdote tells of Jesus Christ saying to his disciples that one of them would betray him. This elicited self-deprecating questions by each disciple asking, "Is it I Master?". When Judas' turn came, to ask the same question, Jesus allegedly intoned a repetition of Juda's query, with cavernous sarcasm, "Is it I Master!". That was supposedly a loyalty check. Of course, that was a mer ...

promises anti-new The military may finally be able to retire Vietnam War-era rifles since 63,000 new ones will soon be delivered to soldiers at the forefront of the defense of the country. As part of the defense modernization amid security and territorial threats, President Benigno Aquino III on Sunday also announced plans to purchase 12 lead-in fighter trainer aircraft, eight combat utility helicopters, and two twin-engine naval anti-submarine helicopter. On top of all these are the new rifles for the Armed Forces, which will be delivered in the next few months. Meanwhile, Aquino said the government continues to support the housing program for retired and active soldiers with more than 54,000 having been distributed so far. He noted that the Department of Agriculture, Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of the Environment and Natural Resources, Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Department of National Defense are working together to support livelihood programs for the soldiers. China’s harassment Philippine Daily Inquirer 12:25 am | Friday, March 14th, 2014 Last Sunday, Chinese Coast Guard ships drove away two civilian fishing boats contracted by the Philippine Navy to resupply the Philippine military outpost in Ayungin Shoal. This was the first time China stopped a routine supply mission in disputed areas in the West Philippine Sea, proving that China has now reached a higher, even more irresponsible, level of assertiveness in pressing its territorial claims. It is only right that China’s outrageous conduct be denounced, that diplomatic protests be filed, and that international pressure be applied. Why are China’s most recent actions so lacking in goodwill, so counter to longstanding assurances of a “peaceful rise” for great-power status? We are not alone in thinking that China is taking a harder line against the Philippines because it has no real answer, in multilateral forums or legal tribunals, to Philippine claims. Ayungin Shoal is only 105 miles west of the Phili ...

For expediting assistance during relief operations for Yolanda-battered areas in Eastern Visayas, the Philippine Navy presented US Pacific Fleet commander, Admiral Harry B. Harris, Jr., with the Military Civic Action Medal during his visit Monday to PN headquarters in Roxas Boulevard, Manila.
City readies for return of Yolanda survivors CEBU City's Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS) plans to ask the Philippine Navy (PN) and the Philippine Air Force (PAF) to help Yolanda survivors from Eastern Visayas, who are in Cebu City, return to their hometowns. Some evacuees who live at the tent city at the South Road Properties (SRP) and those who are with their relatives in Cebu City have signified their intention to go back to Samar and Leyte. The DSWS said Cebu City will set aside P3,000 for the fare and meals of each family. The amount will be taken from the budget of the City’s “Balik Probinsya” program, which gives assistance to migrants who want to return to their hometowns. Budget The program has a P1.5-million budget this year. But DSWS Chief Ester Concha feared that the P3,000 might not be enough for a family of four or more. She said they hope that with the help of the PN and the PAF, the Yolanda survivors would get free transportation to Eastern Visayas. The survivors arri ...
