Preferring the torch over tact, retired policeman and former town mayor Abner Afuang set the Chinese flag on fire for the second time this year to denounce the reported harassment of a Philippine Navy vessel by the Chinese Coast Guard on Ayungin Shoal last week.
"A dilapidated Philippine Navy ship LT 57 (Sierra Madre) with Philippine troops deployed on board is anchored off Second Thomas Shoal, locally known as Ayungin Shoal, Sunday, March 30, 2014 off South China Sea. On Saturday, China Coast Guard attempted to block the Philippine Government vessel AM700 carrying fresh troops and supplies, but the latter successfully managed to docked beside the ship to replace troops who were deployed for five months. (AP Photo/Bullit Marquez)"... AND WE'RE GOING TO FIGHT CHINA WITH THESE ;-) :-( :-(
Despite the PHILIPPINE NAVY SHIP BRP SIERRA MADRE's physical appearance, its most essential posture is, while the CHINESE are on the routine of constantly patrolling the area, to paraphrase one PHILIPPINE military official, " IT IS ( ALREADY ) ANCHORED ", suggesting that it has established its occupancy and that it is there to stubbornly stay and protect the PHILIPPINES' sovereignty and interests in the West Philippine Sea. What is certain is that its defenders, meagerly comprised of less than a squad strong, would fight with everything at their disposal. Comparatively, they may be up against the might of the Chinese Navy but sometimes symbolism is more important than tangibles.

OPERATION MERDEKA The codename for the destabilization plan was Operation Merdeka. The plan involved the recruitment of nearly 200 Tausug and Sama Muslims aged 18 to 30 from Sulu and Tawi-Tawi and their training in the island- town of Simunul in Tawi-Tawi. Simunul was where the first Arab missionary Makhdum built the first mosque in the Philippines in the 14th century. The recruits felt giddy about the promise not only of a monthly allowance, but also over the prospect of eventually becoming a member of an elite unit in the Philippine Armed Forces. That meant, among other benefits, guns, which Muslims regard as very precious possessions. So from August to December 1967, the young recruits underwent training in Simunul. The name of the the commando unit: Jabidah. On December 30 that year, from 135 to 180 recruits boarded a Philippine Navy vessel for the island of Corregidor in Luzon for "specialized training." This second phase of the training turned mutinous when the recruits discovered their true mission ...

THE OTHER SIDE | China's position on the territorial disputes with the Philippines By: Zhang Hua (Chinese embassy in the Philippines) April 3, 2014 12:05 PM NOTE: The author is the spokesperson of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Republic of the Philippines. InterAksyon.com is posting this position paper, which was sent to media Thursday, to present the other side in the continuing dispute between the Philippines and China over the West Philippine Sea and help explain the issue. On March 30, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs stated that it submitted its Memorial to the Arbitral Tribunal that is hearing the case it brought against China under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in January 2013. A lot of media friends ask for comments on this issue. In order that China's position is clearly understood, I would like to elaborate on the following issues. 1. The Philippines' initiation of and push for international arbitration has undermined China-Philippines rela ...

WHAT if the people tasked to decide the fate of those suspected of violating the Philippine Military Academy’s (PMA) Honor Code—“not to lie, cheat or steal nor tolerate anyone who does”—are the very same people defying its precepts? This, in a nutshell, is our question after we talked to Persida Acosta, chief of the Public Attorney’s Office, on our radio program Karambola sa DWIZ regarding the case of dismissed PMA Cadet First Class Aldrin Jeff Cudia. Cudia was all set to graduate as class salutatorian of the Siklab Diwa Class of 2014, and was the leading candidate in the roster of cadets who wished to join the Philippine Navy, when he was unceremoniously yanked out of the PMA for allegedly lying on why he was late for his next class by two minutes. On the surface, it appears that the military academy was within the bounds of its mandate and authority when it opted to adopt the strict implementation of the Honor Code. It now appears, however, that there is more to this subject than meets the e ...

earmarks P5.4B for anti-choppers -- The Department of National Defense on Monday said it has allocated P5.4 billion for the acquisition of two brand-new anti-submarine warfare helicopters for the Philippine Navy. "The ASW helicopters is one of the projects included in the list of the AFP Modernization Program. The project is for implementation," DND undersecretary for finance, modernization, installations, and munitions Fernando Manalo said in a message to the PNA. Manalo said the acquisition process is expected to be completed by this year. The Philippine Navy earlier announced it is considering the AW-159 "Wildcat" made by Augusta-Westland. The choppers will be assigned to the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar and BRP Ramon Alcaraz. The AW-159 is an improved version of the Westland Super Lynx military helicopter. The AW-159, which has been ordered for the British army and navy, will serve in battlefield utility, search and rescue and anti-surface warfare roles. It has a crew of two, has a maximum speed of 291 kilo ...

HONOR CODE Thieves and thugs are reputed to zealously guard the primacy of their honor code, like Omertà. Break your silence and your peers will break your neck. Or your precious torso gets peppered with bullets. Or your legs get cast in Portland cement, and down you go to the bottom of the ocean. In any fraternal organization, there are rules to be followed. This keeps the organization intact. It provides direction as basis for enforcing discipline. It distinguishes members from non-members. Handshakes enable a Mason to know if one belongs to the association. Usually, it becomes necessary to guard against possible breakup. One anecdote tells of Jesus Christ saying to his disciples that one of them would betray him. This elicited self-deprecating questions by each disciple asking, "Is it I Master?". When Judas' turn came, to ask the same question, Jesus allegedly intoned a repetition of Juda's query, with cavernous sarcasm, "Is it I Master!". That was supposedly a loyalty check. Of course, that was a mer ...

China’s harassment Philippine Daily Inquirer 12:25 am | Friday, March 14th, 2014 Last Sunday, Chinese Coast Guard ships drove away two civilian fishing boats contracted by the Philippine Navy to resupply the Philippine military outpost in Ayungin Shoal. This was the first time China stopped a routine supply mission in disputed areas in the West Philippine Sea, proving that China has now reached a higher, even more irresponsible, level of assertiveness in pressing its territorial claims. It is only right that China’s outrageous conduct be denounced, that diplomatic protests be filed, and that international pressure be applied. Why are China’s most recent actions so lacking in goodwill, so counter to longstanding assurances of a “peaceful rise” for great-power status? We are not alone in thinking that China is taking a harder line against the Philippines because it has no real answer, in multilateral forums or legal tribunals, to Philippine claims. Ayungin Shoal is only 105 miles west of the Phili ...

City readies for return of Yolanda survivors CEBU City's Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS) plans to ask the Philippine Navy (PN) and the Philippine Air Force (PAF) to help Yolanda survivors from Eastern Visayas, who are in Cebu City, return to their hometowns. Some evacuees who live at the tent city at the South Road Properties (SRP) and those who are with their relatives in Cebu City have signified their intention to go back to Samar and Leyte. The DSWS said Cebu City will set aside P3,000 for the fare and meals of each family. The amount will be taken from the budget of the City’s “Balik Probinsya” program, which gives assistance to migrants who want to return to their hometowns. Budget The program has a P1.5-million budget this year. But DSWS Chief Ester Concha feared that the P3,000 might not be enough for a family of four or more. She said they hope that with the help of the PN and the PAF, the Yolanda survivors would get free transportation to Eastern Visayas. The survivors arri ...

The Chinese believe that they can achieve their objective of acquiring islands throughout the South and East China Seas without a fight. It worked against the Philippines. If they try the same strategy against Japan over the Senkaku Islands, they just may get a bloody surprise. On January 21, 2014, a 5,000 ton patrol boat began regular patrols from a newly established base on Woody Island. Included in its patrol area is Scarborough Shoal that was abandoned by the Philippine Navy on June 15 2012 to a superior Chinese naval force after a brief encounter.. KASI DUWAG SI PRES. A good start for the Philippine Navy, 3 Medium sized Tankers to give our Navy a RAS [Replenishment At Sea] capability. This is capability we lost nearly two decades ago with the decline of the AFP. Contract for 2 SSV [Stratigic Sea-lift Vessels] have been signed with Indonesia. Essentially these are called LDP [Landing Dock Platform] in NATO country Navies and major Navies around the globe. What they do, is they bring in troops with their vehicles and transport them to any part of the world or region. They also act out as floating headquarters for amphibious operations and they could launch , recover and carry 2 or more helicopters. In the Philippine Navy its also known to be a mobile hospital in times of natural calamities. With the tree Medium Sized Tankers we could now have our larger ships go on constant ready state and just meet them at any point of the country to resupply them with fuel and extend their duty at sea protecting our country.

Manila, Philippines – a military spokesman on Saturday disclosed that the Philippine Navy has a sufficient number of pilots and flight crew to man its three newly-acquired AW-109 “Power” helicopters, and two more that are due to arrive in 2014. PN spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Gregory Fabic said that at the moment, there are seven pilots assigned per helicopter. He added that an equivalent number of AW-109 trained co-pilots and crewmen are also available. “More (pilots and crewmen) are now undergoing training to ensure that the aircraft can be manned at all times,” said Fabic. The Naval Air Group (NAG), the unit tasked to operate and maintain the Navy’s aerial assets, currently has more than 50 pilots on its roster, according to the Navy spokesman. Prior the arrival of the AW-109s last December 8, the inventory of the NAG consists of one Robinson R-22 helicopter, Blohm B0-105 helicopter, two Islander aircraft, and four Cessna light utility planes. Rizal's North Borneo (Sabah) Project. December 29, 2013 at 4:02pm Today, Monday Dec 30, 2013 marks the 117th martyrdom of national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal. On this day a project of Rizal comes to mind as we recall the Lahad Datu massacre of Filipinos from Sulu who last February engaged a large Malaysian military and police forces in Sabah as they laid claim to the land. Yet to this day Malaysia still pays a lease for Sabah to the Sultanate of Sulu. Rizal in 1892 thought of a Borneo colonization project, and had even negotiated with British authorities for the establishment of a Filipino colony in North Borneo or Sabah as it is known today. An account of Rizal's life says that his Borneo mission was successful because the British then were willing to give 100,000 acres of land for 999 years to Filipino colonists. But as fate would have it the project was never realized because of outright rejection by Spanish authorities. Sabah could have been Filipinized, and a totally different history of Mindanao wr ...

History Before the armed rebellion of the MNLF in the early 1970s, Bongao was merely a backwater village ruled by the prominent noble Halun family, who used to own about three-quarters of the island. The capital of the province was Bato-Bato in the mainland situated in a cove with deep waters suited for anchors of the Philippine Navy. At the height of the armed rebellion and fearing that the provincial capitol might be overrun, the government transferred it to Bongao. The white-washed, Taj Mahal-inspired provincial capitol building is located on a hill overlooking the bay and the whole town to the North of the Island against the backdrop of Mount Kabugan and the famous Bud Bongao (Bongao Peak). The transfer of the seat of government ushered the rapid development of the island as the southernmost center of commerce and trade. Suddenly, the population swelled as individuals (and their families) who are in government service moved to the town. Cultural diversity Today, Bongao is a minuscule cosmopolitan site ...

AW-109s also capable of 'interdiction' missions By Priam F. Nepomuceno MANILA, Dec. 22 (PNA) -- Aside from its regular surveillance and patrol capabilities, the Philippine Navy (PN)'s newly-acquired AgustaWestland AW-109 "Power" helicopters are also capable of carrying out interdiction missions against suspicious looking craft entering the country's territorial waters. "Once it detects a suspicious contact, our AW-109s can fly over the target and inspect it. Or it can call its mother ship and request for a RHIB (rigid-hull inflatable boat) to conduct a board-and-search operation," Navy spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Gregory Fabic said in Filipino. Read more @

Super typhoon exposed super incompetence of Pnoy November 22, 2013 11:27 pm by Rick B. Ramos INSIGHTS Rick B. Ramos It took a super typhoon to expose the super-incompetence of PNoy’s presidency. The slow response to the super storm by the national government confirms that a Student Council Government has been running our poor country for the past three years and almost five months. The question now is: Can the Philippines afford to have more of the same for another two years and seven months with the same incompetent leadership? A day before Super Typhoon Yolanda struck and devastated Eastern Visayas, President Aquino reassured the Filipino people that 30 planes and helicopters from the Philippine Air Force and 20 ships from the Philippine Navy were ready to provide rescue and relief operations. However, after the super storm struck with all its fury, these aircrafts and ships were nowhere to be found except for the two ubiquitous Hercules C-130 planes. Unfulfilled promise No less than CNN raised the is ...

South China Sea, ASEAN, China, Philippines and Vietnam China, ASEAN officials discuss code of conduct. Officials from China and the 10 ASEAN countries discussed a potential binding code of conduct in the South China Sea during a meeting in Suzhou, China, on September 14–15. China’s vice foreign minister, Liu Zhenmin, said the officials agreed to pursue a code of conduct using a “gradual approach based on consensus.” The outcome was seen by many observers as a means to stall completion of a binding agreement. The officials were meeting to discuss implementation of the nonbinding 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea. The Philippines and the United States launched war games Wednesday at a naval base facing turbulent waters claimed by China, as the allies sought to highlight their expanding military ties. About 2,300 marines from both sides are taking part in the annual manoeuvres which this year are being staged alongside the South China Sea and come ahead of US President Barack Obama's planned first visit to the Philippines next month. The Philippines, which has been seeking US military support to counter what it perceives as a growing Chinese threat to its South China Sea territory, welcomed the exercises as another important plank in building its defence capabilities. "Multilateral exercises and agreements are essential in our cooperation and operational readiness as a multi-capable force, ready to defend our country's sovereignty and integrity," Philippine Navy vice-commander Rear Admiral Jaime Bernardino said in a speech at the opening of the exercises. Our reaction to this news. I think Undersecretary Manalo is misinformed or just incompetent regarding AFP Modernization. Maestral class Frigate were only 8 ships made in the 1980s. Does he mean Italy will make an old design of Maestral Class frigate for the Philippine Navy? It doesn't make sense. I think Manalo is talking about the two brandnew Incheon-class frigates from Korea. I hope this news will be corrected soon. Hitman

THE AFP MODERNIZATION PROGRAM: ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS by Manny SD Lopez The recent delivery of two obsolete ex-USCG Hamilton-class cutters to the Philippine Navy was the result of foreign military aid lobbying efforts initiated years back by the GMA administration. The original request was forwarded by a well respected former USN admiral, who was contracted to give advice to RP's Washington lobby team to avail of 4 units or more refurbished Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates and other military hardware under FMS and FMF programs. OHP ships are equipped with Harpoon anti-ship, Standard anti-air missile systems, anti-submarine torpedoes, CIWS and full suite of modern surface and air surveillance radars, integrated fire control, communication and electronic counter measures will be an effective deterrent to PLA Navy intrusions. This class of USN warships also has provision to carry two medium size naval helicopters for anti-submarine warfare and are vastly more capable than the Hamilton-class cutters delivered ...

"The Philippine Navy was established during the second phase of the Philippine Revolution when General Emilio Aguinaldo formed the Revolutionary Navy which was initially composed of a small fleet of eight Spanish steam launches captured from the Spaniards. The ships were refitted with 9 centimeter guns. The rich namely Leon Apacible, Manuel Lopez and Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio, later donated five other vessels of greater tonnage, the Taaleño, the Balayan, the Bulusan, the Taal and the Purísima Concepción. The 900-ton inter-island tobacco steamer further reinforced the fleet, Compania de Filipinas (renamed as the navy flagship Filipinas), steam launches purchased from China and other watercraft donated by wealthy patriots." By reading between the lines, the Philippine Navy was formed through the efforts of Aguinaldo's Revolutionary Government. It started with a handful captured ships from the Spanish Navy, then phase by phase, rich Filipino patriots donated more vessels to make it strong and cred ...

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATED) There was a hero who stood out in the 15 minutes of chaos as the Cebu Pacific airbus overshot the runway at the Davao International Airport and landed on its nose. Amid the panic cries, Captain Bok stood up, took control and calmed everyone down. In a text message to defense reporters, Philippine Navy commander of the Civil Military Operations Group Col. Edgard Arevalo said: “I got a word last night regarding the identity of said 'Captain Bok.' He is Lt. Marlon Bo, a Navy reservist and graduate of Philippine Merchant Marine Academy in 2003.” Many passengers followed Captain Bok during those minutes of panic, and many are thanking him. Even Cebu Pacific officials thanked Captain Bok for all his help. [admin 04] The Everchanging Plans for Acquisition of Amphibious Transport Vessels for the PN Recently a news report came out quoting an unnamed DND official on the procurement of 2 Service Support Vessels (SSV), which was described as "mission capable ship" and "smaller than the MRV (multi-role vessel, a.k.a. Landing Platform Dock), and is worth around P2 billion. Before we attempt to discuss this new program, MaxDefense would like to go back in time. Previous attempts by the Philippine Navy to purchase replacements or complements for its old and mostly World War 2-era amphibious vessels date back before the Ramos-era AFP Modernization Program. Most have not been implemented, except for a few new assets. From 1991, the Philippine Navy planned to have at least 8 units of Logistics Support Vessels (LSV), of which 2 units were bought from the US government and were delivered between 1993 and 1994. The US-made LSV were based on a helicopter-capable design of the US Army's Frank Beeson-class, known in the Phil ...

The Cod Wars saw Britain deploying a total of 53 British warships during the operations against 7 Icelandic Patrol vessels and a Catalina flying boat. Puny Icelandic Navy had very much fewer armed vessels than our Philippine Navy but they had no fear imposing their will against the UK's mighty Royal Navy (which had more war vessels - and far greater experience - then than China has today), prepared to sacrifice their puny assets to uphold the conviction that they owned their Exclusive Economic Zone. And guess what? Iceland won! MORALE OF THE STORY: BRAVE TINY ICELAND GOT WHAT IT WANTED AND WAS ABLE TO EXPAND ITS EXCLUSIVE FISHERY ZONE TO 200 NAUTICAL MILES. (Unlike the Philippines which is seeing its fishery rights in the Western seaboard of the Philippines being diminished as we speak.) Note: If China sinks one of our vessels doing its duty patrolling and being present in our EEZ, the world will condemn China!

On May 9, 2013, a Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources patrol vessel, the MCS 3001, encountered the Taiwanese fishing vessel Guang Ta Hsin 28 within Philippine waters. Although the Taiwanese government has claimed that the fishing boat was within their territory, several facts that contradict this claim of Taiwan is that their fishermen frequently poach in the Philippines and Philippine patrol vessels never stray outside of the country’s territorial waters. To further emphasize this, given the materiel deficiencies of the Philippine Coast Guard, the BFAR, and the Philippine Navy ...

P-Noy tells world: What is ours is ours! “In the agenda of our good governance, our message to the world is clear: what is ours is ours, and we will repel any and all attempts to claim what is ours, and defend ourselves against any form of aggression, especially within our backyard,” Aquino said at the 115th anniversary celebration of the Philippine Navy at Fort San Felipe in Cavite.
Faced with an ongoing diplomatic row with Taiwan and a long-standing territorial dispute with China, President Aquino on Tuesday rallied Navy troops at an event in Cavite city, saying the Philippines will not be cowed by threats including those from the outside. "Ang sa Pilipinas ay sa Pilipinas, at kaya nating pumalag at ipagtanggol ang sarili tuwing may sisindak sa atin sa loob at labas ng bansa," Aquino said in a speech during a Philippine Navy event.
Philippine Navy 2020 Breaking News- VIETNAM HAS HARASSED TAIWANESE FISHING VESSELS. Taiwan’s representative office in Vietnam is looking into reports that a Taiwanese fishing boat was allegedly harassed by vessels from the Vietnamese Fisheries Administration in disputed waters in the South China Sea, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday. Japan seizes Taiwan fishing vessel TOKYO -- Japan Tuesday seized a Taiwanese fishing boat inside its exclusive economic zone, the first incident since Tokyo and Taipei signed a fishing rights accord for disputed waters, the Fisheries Agency said. The Taiwanese fishing boat was spotted in waters near Taketomi island, part of Japan's southern Okinawa chain, the agency said. One of the agency's patrol ships seized the boat and arrested the captain, it said. The incident occurred outside the waters that are at the center of a three-way territorial tussle involving Taipei, Tokyo and Beijing for which Japan and Taiwan have agreed fishing rights. Under the agreement, Taiwanese trawlers are permitted to fish in waters off East China Sea islands controlled by Japan as the Senkakus, but also claimed by China and Taiwan as the Diaoyus.
