T’boli, Timog Cotabato- Circa 1985 A Filipino-Chinese cattle rancher armed with a local court order to clear “T’boli native families” from their ancestral lands calling them “ squatters “was accused by native leaders of burning a dozen T’boli homes. Women and children who refused to leave their destroyed homes were chased offinto the neighboring forests and tree tops by German Shepherd dogs. The brother of the Mayor, himself a T’boli and the Philippine Army and local policemen were implicated in the burning of T’boli homes. Tribal leaders unfamiliar with the legal system, sought the help of a lawyer from the Judge Advocate General’s Office (JAGO) a military legal arm. As a result of their protest and media statements condemning the inhuman and unjust treatment by the court, the police, Philippine Constabulary and Army, seven tribal leaders were arrested and placed behind bars in Surallah town. Justice for Romeo Capalla! An Open Letter to President Benigno Aquino III from the International Coalition on Human Rights in the Philippines – Toronto (Canada) Dear President Aquino, Once again, we are shocked by the brutal killing of another human rights defender, Romeo Capalla. We condemn in the strongest terms, the silence of your Administration about these extrajudicial killings being committed almost every week since the beginning of 2014. The assassination of Capalla occurred 13 days after the massacre of Licuben Ligiw and his two sons, Freddie and Eddie, on March 2, 2014 in Abra. Like the other victims of extrajudicial killing, Romeo Capalla was involved in work to improve the lives of marginalized communities. He was a Board Member of Panay Fair Trade Center (PFTC), formed by peasant women in 1991 to provide women farmers and food producers fair value for their products by engaging in post-harvest processing, opening alternative venues for marketing and establishing direct links between the far ...

FILIPINO WWII VETERANS REMEMBERED IN APRIL 9 RITES 15 April 2014- Acts of courage and sacrifice by Filipino soldiers during World War II have not been and should not be forgotten. This was the gist of the remarks delivered by Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda in rites commemorating the Araw ng Kagitingan on April 9, the 72nd anniversary of the Fall of Bataan, at the National World War II Memorial and at the Philippine Embassy. “We have always studied Bataan Day from the point of view of a student. We feel detached from something that happened before we were born. Seeing the veterans today made that link a living reality,” said Lacierda, who led Embassy officials in the wreath-laying at the Memorial. “This is the generation that gave up the best years of their lives for the country. They sacrificed their lives. As Filipinos, we seem to forget so fast,” Lacierda said in remarks he gave at the Embassy. Filipino veterans, some of who were part of the Bataan Death March, family members of deceas ...

He said Indama is the Abu Sayyaf commander behind the series of attacks at a rubber plantation in Maluso town and several kidnapping incidents in the region. ''This is a deliberate operation on the presence of ASG leader Furuji Indama. It's a strike operation because there was information of his whereabouts,'' Zagala told ANC. ''We have 18 wounded. When the meal had reached the point of coffee and dessert liqueurs, John Senior settled back in his chair at the head of the table, eased his belt, and said, "I noticed that your decorations include the Philippines Legion of Honor. What's the story behind it?" Although the Admiral had phrased it as a question it was really an order, and Wally knew it. He took a sip of his coffee and set the cup down. "You know the Filipino government have been forced to deal with a Muslim insurgency for the past 40 years, sir. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front has attempted to establish a presence in the Mindanao River basin, the way the Viet Cong did in the Mekong Delta. The Philippine Army was beating them on land, so they took to the water for transport and intimidation purposes. The government ordered the Navy to deal with them, and as part of Operation Enduring Freedom their Navy asked our Navy for help. I was part of the detachment that was sent to advise them. Army pushes gender equality by: Elvie Roman Roa ORMOC CITY, March 24 (PNA) -- Col. Dinoh Dolina, the 802nd Brigade commander of Philippine Army based in this city, conveyed support for gender and development (GAD) by expressing support to equality towards women in time for this year’s Women’s Month celebration. In ensuring gender equality and equal opportunity, Col. Dolina acknowledged the military’s role in implementing GAD to the fullest. He also campaigned for gender responsiveness as a source of national pride that 19th Infantry Battalion Commander Col. Nedy Espulgar added, is a campaign not only for this Women’s Month but should be an all-year round crusade. It was in 1997 when the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) first accepted female cadets, as the national law dictates to admit at least 10-percent female to the so-called men’s world. Presently, seven out of 12 PMA scholars are women, according to Col. Dolina. Capt. Salvacion Evangelista of 802nd Brigade admitted that women’s strength ...

OPINION of a Filipino American:   I'm sorry my friend, at this point in my life I realized that nothing is more important to me than the value of human life. You speak of death like it's the necessary evil that will solve your lust for sovereignty and freedom. Us humans are so engrossed by that egregious notion that the only way to satisfy our propensities for ultimate vengeance is to claim one human life for another and sometimes even more. This is not what I'm expecting from an intelligent person like you. Our eyes would never meet if violence is part of your idea of civil discussion. Give me a much better solution without ever mentioning violent alternatives...   RESPONSE:   When my grandfather decided to fight the Hukbong Mapagpalaya ng Bayan, he had to turn against Freemasonry of which he was 32nd degree.  At that time, the Philippine government had no money and the Philippine Army was in turmoil as the PMAers removed the guerrilla leaders/reservists and took all the top positions.  Many of the ...

About 8,000 men served in Brigadier General Vicente Lim's 41st Infantry Division in Bataan. Commanding Officer – Combat Company, 43rd Infantry Regiment, 41st Infantry Division (PA) – USAFFE Rank: 1st Lieutenant Hometown: Mabalacat, Pampanga   In looking at the history of Brigadier General Vicente Lim’s 41st Infantry Division, there is little reason not to consider the unit somewhat “special” among the Philippine Army units that fought in the Battle of Bataan. Praise God! We did it! For three years I have wanted to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Zamboanga City, Philippines. Today, God blessed me with that opportunity - twice. And, there were more than 100 decisions for Jesus Christ. Glory to God! We have planted several churches and house churches in this city of around 1 million people, majority of which are Muslim. Our indigenous pastors and missionaries will follow up. This city was also the site of a six-week war with a militant Islamic group. We ministered just outside of a refugee camp. The Philippine Army and Marines are still looking for rebels in the area. We are just getting back to our hotel after a long drive. It's after 1 a.m. I will post more photos and info tomorrow. ABOUT PHILIPPINE ARMY Military History of the Philippines and Philippine Revolutionary Army The Philippine Army was initially organized under the National Defense Act of 1935 (Commonwealth Act No. 1). The act specified that in so far as may be practicable, original appointments by the President in grades above third lieutenant should be made from among former holders of reserve commissions in the United States Army, from among former officers of the Philippine Scouts and Constabulary. After the establishment of the Philippine Commonwealth on November 15, 1935, President Manuel L. Quezon sought the services of General Douglas MacArthur to evolve a national defense plan. The official rebirth of the Philippine Army occurred with the passage of Commonwealth Act No. 1, approved on December 21, 1935, which effected the organization of a Council of National Defense and an Army of the Philippines. The act set forth the organizational structure of the army in some detail, set forth enlistment procedures, and estab ...

Philippines - up-grading anti-terror unit Philippines military to expand counter-terrorism unit MANILA: The Philippine government is to triple the size of a special forces military unit that operates against Islamist militants responsible for deadly bombings and kidnappings of Westerners, officials said on Tuesday. Centralian J Gonzaga helps TMS-Philippine Army win Philippine Super Liga Invitational Crown by Noel Zarate MOA ARENA, Pasay City— Centralian Jovelyn Gonzaga and Mary Jean Balse stepped up at just the right time to fuel a fourth set onslaught enabling the TMS-Philippine Army to win the championship match 25-15, 25-18, 14-25, 25-16 and emerge as titlists in the first ever Philippine Super Liga (PSL) Invitational, before a near capacity crowd here. Championship match: TMS-Philippine Army def. Cignal HD (4 sets) The championship match started on a rather lopsided note with the Lady Troopers easily snaring the first two sets in dominating fashion. It also helped TMS-Philippine Army that newly crowned MVP Bernal could not get her bearings straight in the first two cantos and Best Digger Jen Reyes was being overpowered by the solid shots unleashed by ...

Where I’m From, Everyone is a Hero! Written by: Rachelle Anne L. Miranda YLS President Albay Province When you help, that's ‘tabang’in Bicol. When you help together so we could look after another, that's ‘tarabangan’. This simple idea captures the hearts of Albayanos for continuously uplifting heroism in the Province. A contagious effect evident to the perspiration, inspiration and motivation of one and all are manifestations of how well this embedded in the Albayano spirit. After the devastation of Super Typhoon Yolanda there was too much to consider- the dilemma of destructed homes, gone fortunes, and the most heartbreaking part is the loss of family members and friends. Undeniably, it was all heartbreaking and shattering to all. Yet, more than that there was an urge to help the ones in need and to keep the survivors cling to the idea of living and moving forward with hopes and aspirations. Having been through the same dilemma on the previous years, Albay has grown a stronger and resilient Pro ...

Papa Lamberto was a member of the Philippine Army during World War II, and Mama Tina was also a member of the Women's Auxiliary Service. They have applied for veterans benefits long ago but they died with their application still pending. On the other hand their comrades have long enjoyed the said benefits. America should assuage its conscience on this inequality by awarding even a one-time reward to heirs of deceased veterans so that the service of their parents during the war will not remain unrequited.
Career during World War II At the outbreak of World War II, he joined the motor pool of the 31st Infantry Division of the Philippine Army. When Bataan surrendered in 1942, Magsaysay escaped to the hills, narrowly evading Japanese arrest on at least four occasions. There he organised the Western Luzon Guerrilla Forces, and was commissioned captain on 5 April 1942. For three years, Magsaysay operated under Col. Merrill's famed guerrilla outfit & saw action at Sawang, San Marcelino, Zambales, first as a supply officer codenamed Chow and later as commander of a 10,000 strong force.Magsaysay was among those instrumental in clearing the Zambales coast of the Japanese prior to the landing of American forces together with the Philippine Commonwealth troops on January 29, 1945.

Dismal rights record blocks Philippine Army from US aid - HRW Philippine Army soldiers in a parade (InterAksyon.com file) MANILA, Philippines -- Its involvement in human rights abuses and the failure of the government to prosecute these violations have blocked the Philippine Army from receiving a share of the $40 million in military aid US Secretary of State John Kerry pledged, Human Rights Watch said Wednesday. Kerry announced the aid -- earmarked for maritime security assistance and counterterrorism training for police in Mindanao -- on his arrival here for a two-day visit for bilateral discussions on the framework for the increased rotational presence of US forces in the country and US assistance to survivors of super Typhoon Yolanda. By: InterAksyon.com December 18, 2013 In a statement, HRW’s Asia advocacy director John Sifton noted that none of the aid “will go to the Philippine Army, a traditional recipient of US foreign military financing -- and there’s a reason for that.” “The US Congre ...

KALUMARAN Kusog sa Katawhang Lumad sa Mindanao October 21, 2013 Lumad group condemns Capion case dismissal KALUMARAN tells President Aquino, Justice Secretary De Lima more indigenous peoples growing disgruntled with Philippine justice system The Kusog sa Katawhang Lumad sa Mindanao (KALUMARAN), an alliance of 5 major indigenous peoples groups across Mindanao, condemns the patently unjust and flawed dismissal of the murder case against the Philippine Army for the October 18, 2012 massacre of the Capion family in the Glencore XStrata –SMI Tampakan gold mining concession area. As Lumads, we may not be as literate in the law as non-Lumads, but are not fooled into believing that the prosecutor cannot find probable cause against the 27th Infantry Battalion for their actions that led to the deaths of Juvy Capion, wife of anti-mining leader Daguil and her two sons in the village of Kimlawis, Kiblawan town, Davao del Sur a year ago. How can an unarmed pregnant mother and her children be part of an armed encounte ...

This is why I feel safe in Davao, Mindano, Southern Philippines. First picture, my close personal buds from Philippine Army, Davao Task Force. Second, private security bomb-detecting K-9. Third picture, the bomb-detecting K-9 checking me for explosives residue (or Cheetos, which ever comes first), fourth picture, private security with K-9 trained in both bomb-detection and attack. He is looking for a bomb in the pocket of my shorts; if he doesn't find one, he will attack. I've never met a attack trained Lab as Labs tend to be very placid dogs, but this one's attitude was markedly different than that of the explosives-detection only Lab in the second picture. All pictures taken at Abreeza Mall just outside Obrero Bagangay, Davao. These are great people. I should note that they have SERIOUS private security here, not the minimum-wage door shakers we employ. These guys are ALERT, and they are serious and they watch everything. EVERY SINGLE CAR that goes into the mall has the little mirror on wheels s ...
MANILA, Philippines – Three Armed Forces of the Phiippines (AFP) generals holding critical posts are retiring in November. They are AFP deputy chief of staff Lt Gen Gregorio Macapagal, Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) chief Lt Gen Rey Ardo, and Philippine Army 2nd Infantry Division commander Maj Gen Nonato Alfredo Peralta. Macapagal is the AFP's 3rd highest official. Ardo's post is one of the most coveted positions in the Armed Forces. Based in Zamboanga City, Wesmincom supervises troops dealing with the Bangsamoro Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Central Mindanao and the Abu Sayyaf Group and rogue Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) operating in Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi. Peralta, on the other hand, supervises troops dealing mostly with the New People's Army in Southern Tagalog. The Army 2nd Infantry Division is based in Tanay, Rizal. The AFP has its own selection process, but President Benigno Aquino III will have the final say on the appointments. "The process has already started and selections fo ...

MANILA -- At least two Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) fighters were killed in Zamboanga City as the gunfight between the Nur Misuar-led group and government troops entered its seventh day Sunday. An official from the Philippine Army's 32nd Infantry Battalion said two MNLF fighters were killed in Sta. Catalina village on Saturday evening. The bodies of the two alleged MNLF fighters were recovered Sunday morning. The military found M16 rifles from the slain rebels. Another alleged MNLF rebel, identified as Kahar Hiya, was also arrested in Talon-Talon village on Sunday morning. Hiya said he wanted to be spared from the ongoing firefight, and claimed that he was just recruited by a certain Ali Dawili. Prior to Hiya's arrest, the military also arrested at least six MNLF men in Barangay Catalina on Saturday evening. Some of the arrested men denied being part of MNLF, but a certain Jun Hassan admitted affiliation with the group. Hassan said they were only told that they will hold a peace rally in the city ...
