Once more on Monday night, they were crowned as the best two players in football - despite the World Cup providing the greatest advertisement to the modern game. It also served as an example as to why both still have some way to go to reach the pinnacle of the sport. Ronaldo – albeit carrying an injury – was a shadow of himself in Brazil, while Messi started superbly but saw his form fall away when Argentina needed it most in the latter stages. The likes of Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Philipp Lahm had fantastic personal tournaments, as well as great calendar years with Bayern Munich, and also delivered the silverware in the greatest competition of them all. But that mattered not come Ballon d’Or time. When did the World Cup become so meaningless in the minds of the football masses? How did that pulsating month in Brazil come to be so quickly forgotten amidst a sea of La Liga hat-tricks? England coach Roy Hodgson was widely lambasted on social media for selecting Javier Mascherano as his number o ...

From full-backs in midfield to diamond formations: Reviewing 2014's tactics DECEMBER 30, 2014 11:54:12 AM PST By Michael Cox Tactically, 2014 was an interesting year for football at both club and international level, with more variety than usual, and some intriguing concepts being popularised -- or re-popularised. Here's a review of some of the most interesting tactical features of 2014. Guardiola's full-backs in midfield It's extremely rare to see players in positions you've never seen before, but Pep Guardiola's use of Philipp Lahm and David Alaba early in 2014 was genuinely revolutionary. It was particularly noticeable against Manchester United in last season's Champions League: their defensive positioning was that of natural full-backs, but rather than surging down the flanks to make overlapping runs, they instead drifted into central midfield positions. The idea, supposedly, was to allow Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery to come deep and collect possession with space to run into -- without overcrowding ...

Louis van Gaal is expecting either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'Or but feels one of Germany's World Cup-winning squad would merit the award more. The Barcelona and Real Madrid stars are favourites to be crowned on January 12, 2015, but the Manchester United manager feels the pair do not deserve the honour. Messi, a four-time winner, was handed the Golden Ball at the World Cup after helping Argentina to the final while Ronaldo, a two-time winner, lifted the Champions League with Real Madrid. But Van Gaal feels a member of the triumphant Germany squad would be more worthy victors, with Toni Kross, Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gotze all nominated. "Most of the time it is always the well known players [who win the Ballon d'Or]," he told MUTV. "It is more for the football world and outside world than for other things I believe. I think it will be Ronaldo or Messi but I want to say that you have to win something. "The best thing to win is t ...
Alonso: Hard for a German to beat Messi & Ronaldo to Ballon d'Or 19-Nov-2014 The midfielder feels a German player has a chance if the award is decided on team success, but the Madrid and Barca stars have it wrapped up based on individual displays Bayern Munich star Xabi Alonso believes that it would be tough for a German player to beat Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi to the Ballon d'Or. The veteran Spaniard made a surprise summer move to the Allianz Arena from Real Madrid, where he played alongside Ronaldo and enjoyed many battles with Messi's Barcelona. A number of Bayern's contingent of German World Cup winners are nominated for the prestigious award, including the likes of Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer, but Alonso feels the Liga pairing are still ahead of the competition in terms of individual performances. He told Sport Bild: "It's a very general question: is the award about individual, personal performances? "In this case, it would be tough against Messi and Ronaldo. Or is it about t ...

The City offers 13 million a year to Marco Reus, according to Bild The star of Borussia Dortmund has a buyout clause of 25 million euros contract until June 2016. Bayern and Real Madrid are also meant to you. The German international Marco Reus is a target for Manchester City, according to the newspaper "Bild", had offered to Borussia Dortmund player a salary of 13 million euros a year. Reus can leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of this season in exchange for payment of a termination clause of 25 million euros. Bayern Munich until now was considered the favorite in the race for Reus although his name has also been frequently associated with the Barcelona and Real Madrid. Economically, the offer of the City may be above where Bayern are the highest paid players Franck Ribery, Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger having an estimated 12 million a year salary. However, it is possible that in making its decision the player also consider various other economic factors as it did and does in 2012 when, being ...

His man of the match performances came early in the competition against Switzerland, Nigeria, Iran and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Aside from Messi, Argentina had two nominees – Ángel di María and Javier Mascherano. Germany provided four candidates: Mats Hummels, Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm and Thomas Müller. Real Madrid are Champions League favourites, says Lahm The former Germany international says the club's summer outlay, which included the signing of Toni Kroos from Bayern, makes them the side to beat in Europe Sep 15, 2014 00:02:19 Bayern Munich skipper Philipp Lahm believes that Real Madrid enter this season's Champions League as favourites after winning the competition last year. The Bundesliga champions were beaten 5-0 on aggregate by Carlo Ancelotti's side at the semi-final stage, despite having won the tournament the previous term. The 30-year-old feels that the Spanish side will be the team to beat once more but is determined to add to his one winners' medal in the European Cup before he calls it a day. "The club have strengthened an already-excellent team with a lot of money," he told Kicker. "Real are certainly the team to beat. I want to win this trophy again. BEST XI OF THE TOP 5 LEAGUES IN EUROPE Goalkeeper: Manuel Neuer: One of the easier decisions to make.Neuer is, in my opinion, the best ‘keeper in world football, and that’s that. He has everything a ‘keeper wants and needs to be the best. Neuer is quite sensational, playing as a sweeper-keeper at times. The big German is head and shoulders above any ‘keeper these days, with Thibaut Courtois the next in line. Amazing! Right-back: Philipp Lahm (C): Lahm is a full-back by trade, and a right-back in particular. However,he’s recently been operated as a holding midfield player for Bayern Munich, where he’s just as good.Nonetheless, I’m going to stick him in at right-back, because I still see the German as the best full-back in world football. Centre-back: Thiago Silva: The best defender in world football in my opinion. Silva is an animal and is just the complete centre-back. The Brazilian is great in the air, he knows how to tackle, he can pass the ball and he gets you the odd goal. A brilliant de ...

Lionel Messi misses out as Bayern dominate European Player of the Year voting The shift in power within European football was underlined yesterday when two Bayern Munich players were among the nominees to be named the continent's top-three players, with Lionel Messi left out for the first time in eight years. Manuel Neuer, the Bayern goalkeeper, and his team-mate, winger Arjen Robben, were yesterday named by Uefa on the shortlist for European Footballer of the Year, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. Four-time winner Messi - who was second last year behind Bayern's Frank Ribery - did not make the cut from the final 10. The omission of the Argentine reflected the fact that Barcelona did not win either a Spanish or European honour last season, although the forward did lead his national side to the World Cup final. However, the fact that Neuer was one of three German players listed in the top five - Bayern team-mates Thomas Mueller and Philipp Lahm were the others - underlines the scale of the task ...
Ronaldo leads Uefa Best Player in Europe nominees as Messi is snubbed The 10-man shortlist has been reduced to three, with the Ballon d'Or holder set to battle it out with Bayern Munich duo Arjen Robben and Manuel Neuer for the prize Manuel Neuer, Arjen Robben and Cristiano Ronaldo have been named as the final three nominees for the Uefa Best Player in Europe award. The trio were named as part of an initial 10-man shortlist announced in July, which included Angel Di Maria, Diego Costa, Luis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Philipp Lahm, James Rodriguez and Thomas Muller. Current Ballon d'Or holder Ronaldo has now been voted into the final three, along with Bayern Munich's star winger Robben and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who added the World Cup to his Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal successes last season, but Barcelona's Argentine star could only finish fifth in the voting. Germany’s star midfielder Toni Kroos was statistically the best player in the tournament, according to the Castrol Index, the FIFA approved ranking of World Cup players. The Bayern Munich play-maker, expected to complete a move to Real Madrid this summer, achieved a stunning score of 9.79 out of 10 for his performances in Brazil. The criteria for the score includes passes, tackles, ground covered and, of course, goals. The results make for interesting reading. Here are the top ten, with perhaps the most notable omissions being golden ball winner Lionel Messi, Germany’s captain Philipp Lahm and golden boot winner James Rodriguez. Toni Kroos (9.79) – the Germany pass master excelled, scoring twice in the 7-1 semi-final victory over Brazil and displaying his creative brilliance throughout the tournament. Arjen Robben (9.74) – Kroos’ Bayern team-mate enjoyed an excellent tournament for Holland, sometimes playing as a centre forward as well as his traditional wide berth and scoring three times. Stefa ...

Mourinho defends Messi legacy Jose Mourinho has claimed Lionel Messi does not need to win the World Cup to be considered an all-time great. Messi, 27, led Argentina to the 2014 World Cup final but they lost 1-0 to Argentina after extra time leading to questions about whether the player can be ranked alongside countryman Diego Maradona and Brazil's Pele. But Chelsea manager Mourinho, who had a tempestuous relationship with Barcelona during his time as Real Madrid manager between 2010 and 2013 has defended Messi. "It's easy to respect him when he has won but when he has lost, it's not so easy," Mourinho told Yahoo! Eurosport. "He is still a historical player. He does not need to be world champion to be a historical player, especially in this last decade. "For me Pele is Pele and Maradona is Maradona. It's not for me to compare players from different generations. Maybe because he is from the same generation as when I was born -- for me Maradona is Maradona." When asked if Messi should be considered a scapego ...
Mourinho instead laid the blame at the feet of Argentina manager Alejandro Sabella over his withdrawal of Ezequiel Lavezzi for Sergio Aguero at half-time. "I would like to know why Lavezzi stayed in the dressing room at half-time," Mourinho said. "Argentina had been playing with two lines of four, with Enzo Perez closing Philipp Lahm and Lavezzi doing the same on the other side. Because they were so compact Messi could walk while defending and then when he got the ball he had the energy to make the difference. "When Sabella brought Aguero on for Lavezzi, Argentina changed from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 and they lost a lot of balance. Messi had to run much more after Lavezzi went off. "The team lost balance and especially energy -- energy that they needed in extra-time."
Couldn't be happier because won the final. Everyone is great. Philipp Lahm is the greatest captain.

Mario Gotze'S BOSS TOLD HIM TO SHOW THE WORLD THAT HE WAS BETTER THAN MESSI Germany coach Joachim Low reveals how he inspired his 'boy wonder' Mario Gotze to come up with the brilliant goal that beat Argentina in the World Cup final Joachim Löw has revealed the extraordinary team-talk he delivered before extra-time of last night’s World Cup final when he specifically addressed Mario Götze and told him: “Show to the world that you are better than Lionel Messi.” Götze duly obliged, combining with Andre Schürrle to score a brilliant winner that sealed Germany’s fourth World Cup triumph and made them the first European team to win football’s greatest prize in South America. Löw described Gotze as a “boy wonder” who has the technical skills to play in any position on the pitch. “I said to him, 'show to the world you are better than Messi’,” said Löw. “I had a good feeling that he can play in any position.” Götze himself thanked his girlfriend, Ann-Kathrin Brommel, and close famil ...

I'm proud to have seen Philipp Lahm lift up all the major trophies in a matter of 2 years.
Last night's most searched things on the internet. "German Player's Girlfriend esp Draxler's Girlfriend" :p Argentina was good enough but Germany was Class apart.Higuain and Palacio could have been the hero. But what a goal from Gotze !!! That goal reminded me of a similar goal from Roud Van Nistaroy.Sheer class. But Messi dont deserve the Golden Ball.He may be the best player of the World but he was not the best player of this particular tournament. James Rodriguez Oficial Arjen Robben Thomas Müller Philipp Lahm Bastian Schweinsteiger Even Mascherano deserved it more than him based on the knockout stage matches.

BEST 10 GOAL KEEPERS OF 2014 World Cup 1. Manuel Neuer (Germany) Cristiano Ronaldo got an early clue that this was not going to be his tournament when Neuer produced a superb save from a stoppage-time free-kick to prevent Portugal from salvaging even a sliver of consolation from their crushing defeat by Germany. But it is not his shot-stopping that has distinguished Neuer, it is the way he has practically redefined the role of goalkeeper, taking the sweeper-keeper function to an extreme never before showcased with such success. . 2. Guillermo Ochoa (Mexico) Way to ace a job interview. Ochoa, a free agent after three outstanding seasons at Ajaccio, was unlikely to be short of offers before the tournament but his displays for Mexico may have endeared him to a new calibre of recruiter. The 28-year-old’s agility, reflexes and robust wrists enabled him to make an array of improbable saves. Brazil players wondered whether there had been divine intervention when he helped Mexico to draw against them, while ...

By winning FIFA World Cup 2014 has he registered himself as one of the best full backs to ever play the game?? FIFA World Cup 2014: Astrologer's prediction of Argentina winning World Cup coming true?: "The three top-ranked teams — Spain, Germany and Brazil — have no chance of winning the World Cup. While Iker Casillas's trophy cabinet is full, Philipp Lahm's horoscope isn't that strong. Ditto with Thiago Silva." This is what a city based astrologer, Greenstone Lobo, had to say about the chances of Spain, Germany and Brazil winning the World Cup, and all of the predictions were made way before the World Cup had begun. When asked about Germany's chances of glory, he said, "If you thought Germany have a balanced team, think again. Astrologically speaking, Germany have a highly skewed team. The presence of an ageing Miroslav Klose will affect their chances. Captain Philipp Lahm’s horoscope isn’t good enough to win a tournament of this stature. A change in captaincy, too, wouldn’t work in favour of the Germans. Coach Joachim Loew has a negative Pluto in exaltation. This phenomenon leads to bitter heartache." ...

Philipp Lahm - a right sided Paolo Maldini, fabulously consistent full back
Joachim Low, Germany coach I think both teams played well defensively today. There weren’t many goalscoring opportunities, which was part of our plan. We didn’t want to give France chances with the quality of strikers they possess. We closed them down well – and that was the key. They did the same against us, because Yohan Cabaye and Paul Pogba are a great screen for the defence and we knew that we had to go wide in order to create chances, which is why I switched Philipp Lahm to the full-back position. France gave everything to try to force the equaliser, but Mats Hummels and Jerome Boateng were excellent and Manuel Neuer did well when called upon. In the last four World Cups we've reached the semi-finals. That is a good achievement. We now need to take the next step.
Pass masters Posted at 09:28 The German trio of Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm and Per Mertersacker have now completed more passes than any other players at the 2014 World Cup. Kroos leads the way on 354 completed passes, with Lahm (342) and Arsenal defender Mertesacker (299) ahead of Chile's Gary Medel on 281 and Javier Mascherano of Argentina with 278.
Google News also reported on: Germany 2, Algeria 1 Germany's defense still has issues: Germany's defense was expected to be its weak point heading into the World Cup, and it's lived up (down?) to the hype. Germany has essentially been playing four centerbacks across the back line at the same time, leaving them exposed down the flanks, especially to opponents with pace. Algeria had plenty of that today, and the African side's ability to get into space on the counterattack constantly created issues. Per Mertesacker hasn't looked overly athletic at the back, while Jerome Boateng seemed unsure of himself in the middle after playing right back in the group stage. Benedikt Howedes hasn't been overly effective all World Cup. What makes this interesting is the fact Germany has one of the world's best right backs on its roster in Philipp Lahm -- but he has been playing as a holding midfielder in front of the defense. He moved to the backline for the final 45 minutes of the match on Monday, but it's unclear whether ...

Germany vs. Ghana: Tactical Preview of World Cup Group G Match The first round of group-stage matches is in the books at the FIFA World Cup 2014, and now we turn our attention to the second lot. Germany face Ghana in their next match, and they'll have to put in one *** of a performance to match their last outing against Portugal. Germany Joachim Low faces the unenviable task of following up on a glamorous 4-0 win. Die Mannschaft destroyed Portugal early this week in their opener, with Thomas Mueller bagging a hat-trick, Mario Goetze excelling and Mesut Ozil finding space between the lines with ease. The 4-3-3 formation sent out featured four centre-backs, Philipp Lahm in midfield and no Bastian Schweinsteiger; we could be set for a few changes, but which players might come in? Low is difficult to predict at the best of times, but how will he follow up such an emphatic win? Ghana Ghana's 4-2-3-1 formation was turgid, uninspiring and full of flaws. They played their opener against the USA's 4-4-2 and faile ...

Germany and Portugal will get their World Cup campaigns underway in Salvador today looking to put behind them buildups to the competition blighted by fitness concerns. Injuries have come in heavy measure for Germany coach Joachim Low. Those who have not even made it to Brazil include Ilkay Gundogan, who missed almost the entire season, Mario Gomez, who was discounted for selection because of an injury-plagued campaign with Fiorentina, and left-back Marcel Schmelzer, who was unable to convince Low of his fitness. An injury suffered to attacking midfielder Marco Reus in Germany’s final warm up game means he will also miss the competition, while key players Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Sami Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger all come into the competition after various fitness concerns. It is hardly ideal buildup for a team that has identified this World Cup as the time to correct their nearly-men tag of recent times. In the last four major tournaments, Germany have been eliminated from the semifinals on thr ...
Crap trivia.. England have the third most valuable squad at the World Cup..?!! 😳 Germany possess the most valuable squad (£641m), no doubt helped by the likes of Mesut Ozil, Toni Kroos and Philipp Lahm. reigning champions Spain, with Sergio Ramos, Diego Costa etc, etc are second at £591m. So Brazil, Argentina, Portugal France etc.. are all worth less than the England team..⚽️😳
32 Teams,64 Matches,12 Stadium,1 Trophy,1 Winner!! Despite some injury worries,to me Germany is one the favourites, and is one of the most efficient and consistent teams in the tournament. It will be important to get keeper Manuel Neuer, mid fielder Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and striker Miroslav Klose fit in time.Meanwhile I think that Spain could very well be in a position to defend its World Cup title because of its magnificent squad comprising keeper like Iker Casillas, striker David Villa Sánchez Gerard Piqué.It's hard for any football fan to choose in between Germany and Spain! But I have been supporting Germany since 2006 and I think I always will be! :) I have really enjoyed every single moment of the World Cup,from Zinedine Zidane's infamous head-butt in 2006 to the famous triumph of spain in 2010.My expectations are really high this time and I'm sure it would be the best World Cup for some of the outstanding players including Andrea Pirlo,Frank Lampard,Klose Diego Forlan, Xavi Hernández ...
Quick question 2 : Do you guys prefer Philipp Lahm to play in midfield along with Bastian Schweinsteiger or his regular full back position ?
Breast Cancer Awareness
Good evening. Tonight we continue our look at World Cup Groups with a look at Group G. GERMANY (seeded) How do they play? Style & formation: Blessed with far more flair than many Germany sides of the past, their fluid 4-2-3-1 is underpinned by Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira - recently back from a long-term injury - anchoring the side from the base of midfield. Ahead of them lies creative fulcrum Mesut Ozil, who is usually flanked by the dangerous Marco Reus and Thomas Muller. Strengths: They have an incredible array of attacking midfielders that guarantee goals. Manuel Neuer can lay claim to being the world's best goalkeeper and Philipp Lahm, whatever position he plays in, brings calmness and tactical nous along with his vice-captain Schweinsteiger. The free-scoring Müller has a priceless knack of being in the right place at the right time. Weaknesses: More than you'd imagine. Left-back is an issue for coach Joachim Low, while the defence as a whole has been porous of late and was given a torrid ...

GERMANY vs KAMERUN Predicted line-ups: Germany: Weidenfeller, Grosskreutz, Mertesacker, Boateng, Durm, Kramer, Khedira, Ozil, Reus, Muller, Klose. Joachim Loew has confirmed that Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer will miss the Cameroon match as a precaution. Cameroon : Itandje, Bong, N’Koulou, Nyom, Matip, Enoh, Loe, Idrissou, Moukandjo, Aboubakar, Choupo-Moting. Samuel Eto’o is touch and go for the match with a knock, while Alex Song is also an injury doubt.
Germany's Neuer, Lahm will not play in friendly vs. Cameroon. BERLIN - Germany's World Cup squad jetted to Moenchengladbach for Sunday's friendly against Cameroon without captain Philipp Lahm and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who flew to Munich for treatment. Joachim Loew's squad concluded their 10-day pre-World Cup training camp in south Tirol on Saturday and flew back to Germany, for their penultimate friendly before Brazil 2014, minus Lahm and Neuer. The Bayern Munich stars will continue to be treated in the Bavarian capital by the German Football Association's (DFB) medical staff in their bid to be fit for Brazil. The pair have both laboured with injuries since the German Cup final a fortnight ago when Lahm suffered an ankle knock while Neuer damaged a shoulder. Head coach Loew has said the there are no concerns either of them will miss the opening World Cup match against Portugal in Salvador on June 16 in Group G. Lahm, Neuer concerns dismissed Germany national team coach Joachim Loew moved to play down concerns over the fitness of captain Philipp Lahm and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer on Friday. Can Germany survive without the two utility players?

Germany captain Philipp Lahm was able to train with the ball, while midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.
5. Philipp Lahm has had some kind words to say about Mesut Ozil. All in here:
Injuries, threaten Germany Already, Joachim Loew has a host of issues to sort if Germany is to legitimately challenge for this summer's World Cup. What's German for "angst?" Joking aside, it's hard to contemplate any other footballing nation being this good at fearing the worst ahead of every single World Cup. In 2006, injury doubts about Philipp Lahm (elbow) and Michael Ballack (calf) coincided with wide-scale panic about the defence. Writing as a columnist for Bild, Paul Breitner even advised national manager Jürgen Klinsmann to re-instate a sweeper system with Jens Nowotny as the “libero” at the back. Four years later, Ballack's absence in South Africa -- Kevin-Prince Boateng had fouled him badly in the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Portsmouth in May 2010 -- gave rise to plenty of apocalyptic thoughts. The upshot: Germany made it to third place in both tournaments. This time around, no-one has yet dared to write about the doomsday scenario: a group stage exit. But less than a month ahead of the ...
OUR KEY PLAYERS: Keeper Manuel Neuer is the undisputed No1, while many experts believe he is the real deal, equipped not only to follow in the footsteps of Oliver Kahn and Jens Lehmann, but also to develop into one of the best in the world. Full-back Philipp Lahm and schemer Bastian Schweinsteiger earned their international spurs long ago: each has reached 100 caps but is still at their peak. The next generation appears immensely promising too. Former Real Madrid starlet Mesut Ozil , who now laces his boots at Arsenal was just 21 when he thrilled the crowds at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and is a gifted creative player with passing ability to match the best in the world. Up front, Thomas Muller won the adidas Golden Boot and was named Best Young Player at the 2010 finals, while youngsters Marco Reus , ANDRE SCHURRLE, Toni Kroos and Mario Gotze keep getting better and better .
