I'm writing this because I'm honest. And sometimes honesty comes with shame. But I just realized that I am rooting for the New York Rangers to win the Stanley Cup. A HUMONGOUS Philadelphia Flyers fan rooting for the Rangers to win the Cup. In my defense, there are at least a few reasons this is happening: 1) is Martin St. Louis, the former UVM standout who still has my heart. 2) is the fact that the Flyers and every other team I give a hoot about have already been eliminated. 3) is, perhaps, the fact that I have now lived in NYC for close to 15 years -- vehemently opposing and detesting the vast majority of its sports teams all the while. Whatever the reasons, I'm sitting here cheering for a team that I have been trained ALL my life to HATE. I'll stop short of posting any logos, but I have to admit: it would be kind of cool to see the Rangers reach the Finals. Ghost of Pelle Lindbergh, PLEASE forgive me!!

God Bless you Kate! 75 years ago today, Irving Berlin’s classic anthem “God Bless America” was performed for the first time ever by American singer Kate Smith. Smith’s rendition would later cement her legacy in professional sports history. In 1969 the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team began to play her song before games. It was believed that the playing of this song was good luck and assured victory. Later, her second time playing the song before a game at The Spectrum arena, was before Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals on May 19, 1974 against the Boston Bruins. The Flyers won the Stanley Cup that year. They also won the Cup the following year, and it was believed to be because Kate sang it again live on May 13, 1975 before game 7 versus the New York Islanders. The Flyers still show a video of her singing “God Bless America” in lieu of “The Star Spangled Banner” for good luck before important games. So god bless you Kate!

Devils may be playing golf, but: All in all, Game 4 was a pathetic effort from a team that fancies itself a contender in the Eastern Conference. But here’s the thing. The Rangers simply aren’t that good. They have a long way to go before becoming anything approximating a legitimate threat to win the Stanley Cup, or even come close. It’s probably safe to assume now that the first-round series between the Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers pitted the two worst teams in this year’s playoffs against one another. And part of the problem for the Rangers is they remain their own worst enemy. Perhaps it would be different if the Rangers weren’t such a desired destination for players. Then it might not be tempted to try to grab every fading star player just because he happens to be available.

Only 3 times in 175 tries (1.7%) has a team comeback to win a series down 3-0 in the playoffs. The Toronto Maple Leafs were the first to turn the trick, doing so in the 1942 Stanley Cup Final against the Detroit Red Wings. The New York Islanders followed 33 years later in their franchise first playoff run, catching the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1975 Quarterfinals. Finally, the Philadelphia Flyers did it 35 years after that beating the Boston Bruins in the 2010 Eastern Conference Final. Breaking it down by round, teams have held a 3-0 lead 44 times in the Preliminary round, 62 times in the Quarterfinals, 43 times in the Semifinal, and 26 times in the Stanley Cup Final. 109 of 175 times (62%), leading teams took the series in Game 4. Of the 66 teams that have survived a sweep, only 8 (12%) lived to skate in a Game 7.
