The Ronettes were a family-group that got its start as 'The Darling Sisters' - after The Andrews Sisters - in New York's Spanish Harlem in 1959. By 1961, the group had changed its name to 'Ronnie & The Relatives' and they were recording sides for Stu Phillips on Colpix Records. Adopting their signature 'tough girl' look during this period with big beehive hairdo's, thick mascara, and tight slitted skirts they soon changed their name again to 'The Ronettes' and caught the attention of Phil Spector. Signing with him in 1963, Veronica "Ronnie" Bennett, her big sister Estelle Bennett, and their cousin Nedra Talley dominated the Pop top 40 between 1963 and 1964. During that time the group toured England with 'The Rolling Stones' and in 1964, their single "Walking In The Rain," earned Phil Spector a Grammy Award for "Best Sound Effects."
