“Girl Groups!” was the vinyl theme for last evening’s $2 TUESDAY and it was aural celebration from start to finish. I focused mainly on the late ‘50s-early ‘60s heyday of these artists, including some earlier and later kindred spirits, too. I also played some solo artists, like Leslie Gore and Dusty Springfield, whose recorded sound embraced the girl group ethos. And it’s the SOUND of these records that is truly magnificent! As much as the artists themselves, the producers of these tracks, men like Phil Spector, Quincy Jones and Shadow Morton, created teenage symphonies meant to blast forth from car radio speakers or all-in-one bedroom record players. Armed with Brill Building songs, these producer/artists teams hit the mark again and again. I was pleased to find so many fellow fans of these recordings in the club last night, indicating that we will need to revisit this theme soon.
