Thinking About The Icarus Syndrome: A History of American Hubris Programs In The Icarus Syndrome, Peter Beinart tells a tale as old as the Greeks -- a story about the seductions of success. Beinart describes Washington on the eve of three wars -- World War One, Vietnam, and Iraq -- three moments when American leaders decided they could remake the world in their image. Each time, leading intellectuals declared that history was over, and the spread of democracy was inevitable. Each time, a president held the nation in the palm of his hand. And each time, a war conceived in arrogance brought untold tragedy. In dazzling color, Beinart portrays three extraordinary generations: the progressives who took America into World War I, led by Woodrow Wilson, the lonely preacher's son who became the closest thing to a political messiah the world had ever seen. The Camelot intellectuals who took America into Vietnam, led by Lyndon Johnson, who lay awake at night after night shaking with fear that his countrymen consider ...
Necessary Criteria For The Good Fight: Why Liberal---and Only Liberals---Can Win the War on Terror and Make America Great Again - An Update Once upon a time, liberals knew what they believed. They believed America must lead the world by persuasion, not command. And they believed that by championing freedom overseas, America itself could become more free. That liberal spirit won America's trust at the dawn of the Cold War. Then it collapsed in the wake of Vietnam. Now, after 9/11, and the failed presidency of George W. Bush, America needs it back. In this powerful and provocative book, Peter Beinart offers a new liberal vision, based on principles liberals too often forget: That America's goodness cannot simply be asserted; it must be proved. That American leadership is not American empire. And that liberalism cannot merely define itself against the right, but must oppose the totalitarianism that blighted Europe a half century ago, and which stalks the Islamic world today. With liberals severed from their ...
Here is a book review I did recently for an academic journal. It deals with Peter Beinart's efforts to create a liberal face for Zionism. Unfortunately for Professor Beinart, Zionism really never had such a face, nor can it successfully wear such a mask. LD Peter Beinart, The Crisis of Zionism Henry Holt and Co. Times Books 2012 (26.00 cloth) Part I - Background History is an interpretive enterprise that sometimes generates widely different renderings of the same events. Each observer can put forth his or her evidence to try to make their version or story convincing. This happens all the time, both at the professional level of the historian and at the everyday level of witnesses and polemicists. The issue of Zionism and Israel have been the subjects of contested history for at least 95 years (counting from 1917 and the Balfour Declaration). Ask an Israeli about the national history taught to him or her and compare that to historical information known to almost all Palestinians and you will get very d ...

Report: “Obama Will Let Netanyahu Face International Isolation On His Own” author Tuesday December 11, 2012 10:00author by IMEMC & Agencies Report post A recent report published in the Newsweek by Peter Beinart, who is described as a “Jewish liberal at the American-Jewish community in the United States", also close to the Obama Administration, stated that Barack Obama will not help Netanyahu in overcoming international pressure against his policies with the Palestinians. Image Arabs48 Image Arabs48 Beinart said that, by facing the International Community on his own, Netanyahu will feel the heat of isolation, and might change his policies, mainly the ongoing construction and expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, and in occupied East Jerusalem. The new U.S approach that Obama likely to initiate in dealing with Netanyahu was described as “benign neglect”. Beinart says that Obama, serving his second and final term in office, will not be directly confronting Netanyahu “and wil ...

Caroline Glick exposes America’s unJews and puts them in their place.df] November 21, 2012 The liberal anti-Semitic projection syndrome By Caroline Glick I've been on the road for the past several days and out of the loop so to speak. I just got home last night. I read a blog post by Jonathan Tobin from Commentary today where I discovered that the post-Zionist poster boy of the American Jewish left Peter Beinart is now accusing Israel's non-Jewish supporters of being anti-Semites. Beinart you see, thinks that an anti-Semite is someone who criticizes anti-Zionist (or post-Zionist, or fair-weathered Zionist) American Jews for hanging Israel out to dry. So if a non-Jew criticizes, say Peter Beinart for spewing nonsense about how Israel's rejection of Beinart's positions on territorial surrender legitimizes anti-Israel sentiment, then that person is an anti-Semite. Beinart, after all, criticizes Israel as a Jew so since he does it as a Jew, attacking him for making ridiculous accusations against Israel make ...

1980-1981- Israel Teams Up With Republicans to Defeat Jimmy Carter- During the Iran hostage crisis of 1979-1981, Israel, upset at President Jimmy Carter’s attempt to create a peaceful two-state solution in Palestine, used its clandestine operations in Iran to prevent American hostages from being released before Carter’s re-election bid. Carter wrote in his White House Diaries that Israel was purposefully thwarting the peace process with Palestine so it could continue to settle on Palestinian land. History has certainly proven Carter right, and Peter Beinart, the author of The Crisis of Zionism confirms this fact by investigating every major Israeli-Palestinain peace negotiation, and pointing out Israel’s efforts to subvert them. According to Consortium News, Israel used its operatives in Iran to ensure that US hostages were not released before the election, which doomed Carter’s chances for re-election. The hostages were released immediately after Reagan’s inauguration, and Israel was subsequent ...

Romney’s Ryan pick is meant to shake up the race, excite conservatives, rouse a jaded media, and save the day. But American politics is littered with bold and improbable decisions that didn’t work out well.
if you ask me that Peter Beinart guy has a suspicious obsession with Jews.
Peter Beinart's "The Crisis of Zionism" is a must read for all who would like to know contemporary events effecting Israel's neighborhood
"Why do Gingrich and Adelson think it matters? Presumably because if there’s no such thing as a Palestinian, then there’s no basis for a Palestinian state. But American conservatives, of all people, surely know that our most basic rights don’t stem from our membership in a group. They stem from our existence as individuals endowed by our creator with certain inalienable rights. Which is to say: if you deny Palestinians in the West Bank the right to vote, the right to citizenship, the right to free movement and the right to due process, telling them they’re not members of something called the Palestinian people doesn’t let Israel off the hook. To the contrary, it leaves Israel very much on the hook." - Peter Beinart 8/13/2012

Romney’s Overseas Trip: The Real Toll. The original article is by writer Peter Beinart. You can find the original article in this weeks Newsweek or by reading it online at The Daily Beast. ~R~ I am shocked by this article. There are observations made in it that we all have read and tossed aside more often than tissue paper during a bout of flu but, because I read on, I am floored! I have never felt particularly comfortable with Mitt Romney's campaign for president starting with his kick off, I find something wanting in his character, he seems to have an issue or two darkly important inside. I have watched him during debates and interview's and the man seems distracted almost detached from the moment. What does this man have to feel uncomfortable about? I must also confess that I have not been overly impressed with the job that Barack Obama has done while in office either but he has been able to make me feel assured when he is overseas. Let's go to paragraph six of the article. I admit, this is just one ...
Settlers have already converted some 400 dunams of Susya's land from agricultural use, as part of a modus operandi that is well-known in the West Bank.
Even if Harry Reid is correct and Romney evaded paying taxes, Democrats’ obsession with the issue diverts attention from the real debate—the difference between his politics and Obama’s, says Peter Beinart.
Today's best columns: Peter Beinart on Romney's irrelevant tax returns and Bill Keller on leak fever
I understand the points Peter Beinart is trying to make in his article in Daily Beast, but I think he's being rather naive. He writes that whether or not the public remembers Romney's specific missteps on his foreign trip, he has created an impression of blundering that will change voters' perceptions of him for the worse. Really? Compared to what? Our own President bowing to the Emperor of Japan or giving the British Prime Minister a set of videos as a gift? (And supporters of Obama had better hope the public doesn't dwell too much on the fact that Lech Walesa endorsed Romney after pointedly refusing to meet with Obama last year following the European missile defense affair.) I agree that the things Romney did and said last week were absurd, but it doesn't seem to occur to Beinart that the sort of voter who prefers Romney may happen to see the rest of the world pretty much the way Romney himself appears to see it: as a collection of backward places to be lectured to and then improved with "American know- ...
