Latest News in Singapore/Malaysia relations. Love Thy Neighbour. The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague has decided that Malaysia is not liable to pay the S$1.4 billion development charges on three plots of ex-railway land that was officially handed over to Singapore in 2010. In 1990, a Points of Agreement was signed between Singapore and Malaysia about three parcels of land in Tanjong Pagar, Kranji and Woodlands which used to be railway land belonging to Malaysia. In 2010, the land was officially passed back to Singapore in exchange for the rights to develop the Marina South and Ophir-Rochor areas. These areas were given to M+S, the joint venture between Temasek Holdings and Malaysia’s Khazanah Nasional to be developed. However, Singapore has a rule that pieces of land approved for development must pay development charges if the approval increases the value of that land. Singapore had wanted Malaysia to pay those charges, amounting to about S$1.4 Billion but Malaysia disagrees saying they shou ...

- Philippine Navy – For South China Sea claimants, a legal venue to battle China: - Reuters – When Philippine President Benigno Aquino compared China to the Germany of 1938 and called for global support as his country battles Beijing’s claims in the South China Sea, he put the focus on a case that Manila has filed in an international court. The Philippines has taken its dispute with China to arbitration under the United Nations’ Convention on the Law of the Sea and its lawyers say that the tribunal has discretionary powers to allow other states to join the action. China is refusing to participate and has already warned Vietnam against joining the case being heard at the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague, sources have said. Hanoi has so far kept its options open. Any final ruling by the court on the dispute, one of the most tense flashpoints in Asia, cannot be enforced but will carry considerable moral and political weight, analysts say.
A Brief Summary of the League of Nations, During the war influential groups in the United States and Britain had urged the creation of such a body, and U.S. President Woodrow Wilson strongly favoured the idea as a means of preventing another destructive world conflict. A league covenant, embodying the principles of collective security (joint action by League members against an aggressor), arbitration of international disputes, reduction of armaments, and open diplomacy, was formulated and subscribed to by the Allies at the Paris Peace Conference (1919). The Covenant established the League’s directing organs: an assembly composed of representatives of all members; a council composed of permanent representatives of the leading Allied Powers (with additional rotating members); and a secretariat (executive), presided over by a secretary general. It also provided for a Permanent Court of International Justice and for a system whereby colonies in Asia and Africa would be distributed among the Allied Powers in ...
More whistleblowers emerge in Australia’s Timor spying scandal By Mike Head 7 December 2013 The Australian government’s moves to suppress further exposures of its surveillance operations suffered a blow yesterday when it was revealed that three more whistleblowers have given statements to the East Timorese government about the illegal installation of bugging devices in the walls of Dili’s cabinet offices. The bugging involved Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS) agents posing as aid workers helping renovate Timorese government buildings. Two weeks ago a preliminary meeting was held in The Hague ahead of East Timor’s legal claim at the Permanent Court of Arbitration to nullify an oil and gas revenue-sharing treaty because of the Australian spying. The Timorese representatives told the Australian delegation they intended to use the testimony of four Australian whistleblowers to support their case. This information almost certainly triggered Tuesday’s Australian Security Intelligence Organ ...

On this date in 1904, a recently retired American philanthropist named Andrew Carnegie agreed to finance a building in The Hague to permanently house the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA), under the conditions it would also include a legal library of the highest standards. The Carnegie Foundation was established to manage the funds, and mediate matters regarding the location and designs of what came to be known as the Peace Palace.     Carnegie opened a juried international design competition for the building located in a park-like setting. Over 3,000 entries were received from architects around the world, and were placed on exhibition in thepalace of Queen Wilhelmina for review. European and American architects were on the jury panel, which selected six winners with two traditional French architects as front-runners. Louis Cordonnier won the first prize. Not without several months of heated disputes and modifications of the original design, the first stone was symbolically placed during the second ...
The Abyei area is located between Northern and Southern Sudan. The region is inhabited by a number of tribes, the most prominent of which are the Ngok Dinka that follow local faiths, and the Misseriya, Arab nomads whose existence takes them across large portions of territory In 1905, while the country was under Anglo-Egyptian rule (1899-1956) and because of recurrent conflicts between the Ngok Dinka and Arab nomads, the Abyei area was transferred from the Bahr el Ghazal region (now in Southern Sudan) to Kordofan (now in Northern Sudan) During the first Sudanese civil war (1956-1972), the Ngok Dinka fought alongside the South, while the Misseriya sided with the authorities in Khartoum. Well, if this is the case and the disputes that were referred to International Tribunal under the auspices of Permanent Court of Arbitration that awarded the SPLM. Why Messiriya still complain that much about a land that their fore-fathers had had never own??
South Sudan became an independent nation last year, the culmination of a 2005 peace accord that ended decades of fighting between the two sides. In 2009, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, an international organization, ruled that Heglig was outside the borders of the contested area of Abyei, which lies between Sudan and South Sudan, and therefore belonged to Sudan.
