Chelsea show similarities with Jose Mourinho's last title winners Whether it concerns star players, groundbreaking managers or all-conquering teams, there is a continual desire among football observers to draw comparisons with those of yesteryear. The debate as to where Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo stand in the pantheon of greats has constantly raised its head over the past few years, while there have been frequent arguments of where Pep Guardiola's Barcelona (2008-12) should be ranked among other great sides in history such as Arrigo Sacchi's AC Milan (1987-91), Rinus Michels' Ajax (1970-73) and the 1970 incarnation of the Brazil national team. While not quite at those heights yet, Chelsea's unbeaten run in all competitions and their position at the summit of the Premier League has already seen them named in the same breath as a couple of magnificent English sides from a decade ago. The comparisons with Arsenal's "Invincibles" of 2003-04 have come about because Chelsea have yet to emerge on the wro ...

Arsenal ‘want Pep Guardiola to replace Arsene Wenger as manager’ Metro Sport Reporter for Metro.co.ukSaturday 1 Nov 2014 8:28 am 247 Arsenal 'will make approach for Guardiola to replace Wenger'Arsenal are keen on hiring Pep Guardiola to replace Arsene Wenger (Picture: Getty) Arsenal are ready to make a move for Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola at the end of next season as they plan for life after Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman’s future with the Gunners has been subject of speculation this week with both Carlo Ancelotti and Paul Clement being eyed up as potential successors. But the Evening Standard says Guardiola has emerged as a more serious option and Arsenal will look to move for him in 2016. That’s when Guardiola has apparently ear-marked leaving Bayern for a new challenge, with the Premier League looking his obvious destination. Arsenal would have competition to bag him but the Spaniard has made no secret of his admiration for the North London club. If a deal could be agreed, Wenger would most ...
Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola believes the absence of Manchester United from this season's Champions League serves as a warning to all elite clubs, reports BBC Sport. United are sitting out the competition for the first time since 1995 after finishing seventh in the Premier League last season. "It is a good lesson for the big clubs if we think we are unbeatable, that we are so strong," Guardiola said ahead of his side's Champions League tie with Manchester City on Wednesday. "Every year we need to make the good things or maybe next season you could be out. That is why football is magnificent. Every single week you have to be ready."
Pep Guardiola says Manchester United cannot afford to buy Bayern Munich's star players and believes their decline should serve as a lesson to other clubs in Europe. United have been a perennial giant in English and European football under Sir Alex Ferguson, but the Scot's retirement at the end of the 2012-13 season has seen them go downhill rapidly. Louis Van Gaal was rumoured to be chasing three Bayern Munich players as he looked to add to bolster his squad, with Arjen Robben, Thomas Muller and Bastian Schweinsteiger all linked. Muller recently hinted that he turned down "astronomical" money to join United and Guardiola has added that the 13-time Premier League champions couldn't afford to lure his players away from the Allianz Arena. "[United] didn't have enough money," he told reporters. "I saw they spent a lot of money. It’s good for my friend Louis. It’s part of the game. "All of the clubs in the world want the players of another club. It depends on the player. If the player wants to play he will ...
Ribery ruled out of Manchester City clash, but Robben fit Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has been ruled out of their Champions League opener at Manchester City after his knee problem flared up again. The Frenchman made his first appearance of the season, coming of the bench to score during Bayern's 2-0 win over Stuttgart on Saturday, but skipped Sunday's post-match training session and will miss Wednesday's Group E opener against the Premier League champions. "Ribery will not take part in the final training session," Bayern coach Pep Guardiola admitted. "He is at home and cannot play. "The doctor saw him on Monday and said he cannot play." Ribery, 31, missed the first two weeks of the season with a knee injury and could well find himself being rested between matches as he feels his way back to full fitness. Guardiola did, however, say that Arjen Robben - who missed Saturday's game with a knee problem - was fit and had been included in the squad. The Spanish tactician will need to reshuffle his defence ...
Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola confirmed today that Manchester United wanted to buy a number of his players this summer but said that the Old Trafford club couldn't afford them and they didn't want to leave for the Premier League anyway.

Champions League draw in full: Real Madrid face Liverpool, Barcelona versus PSG The reigning champions discovered who they will face in the early stages on Thursday, with Bayern Munich, Man City, Roma and CSKA Moscow the best candidate as the Group of Death. Reigning European champions Real Madrid have been drawn with five- time winners Liverpool in the Champions League group stage draw held in Monaco on Thursday. Carlo Ancelotti's men achieved la Decima in May with a final win over Atletico Madrid and they will also face Swiss side Basel and Bulgarian champions Ludogorets in Group B as they try to become to first team in Champions League history to win back-to-back titles. Bayern Munich, coached by former winner Pep Guardiola, will aim for their fourth final in six years but have arguably been handed the Group of Death as they will need to overcome Premier League winners Manchester City, Russian side CSKA Moscow and Serie A runners-up Roma to get out of Group E. Barcelona will need to navigate their way ...
Liverpool sweat over Shaqiri move as Swiss star's Bayern future hangs in the balance SWITZERLAND midfield sensation Xherdan Shaqiri must decide between signing a new contract with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, or a move to Premier League runners-up Liverpool. Reports claim that the impressive 22-year-old has been handed an improved contract offer by Pep Guardiola's side. However Liverpool's interest has yet to subside, and are prepared to offer Bayern a generous deal to lure the Swiss international to Anfield what do you think kopites should BR sign him?
The agent of Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic has confirmed that he will reveal who is in the driving seat to sign his client on Wednesday. Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea have both been heavily linked with the 28-year-old, who scored twice at the World Cup in Brazil before Croatia were eliminated in the group stages. Mandzukic is all but certain to leave the Allianz Arena before the start of next season, and according to his agent, Ivan Cvjetkovic, Wednesday could provide the English sides with some vital information in their pursuit for the striker. According to the Express, Cvjetkovic told Calciomercato.com: “Are we interested in going to Inter? At the moment, I can't give you any answers. "However, there could be some new developments this coming Wednesday or Thursday." Mandzukic is said to be keen on securing European football for next season after being told by Bayern manager Pep Guardiola that he is surplus to requirements at the German champions. Arsene Wenger is desperate to add ano ...
Xherdan Shaqiri Xherdan ShaqiriReuters Liverpool are reportedly leading the race ahead of Manchester United to sign Xherdan Shaqiri - after Merseyside officials opened talks with Bayern Munich over a £16m summer deal. Brendan Rodgers was reportedly keen on signing the 22-year-old winger during the January transfer window after failing to bring Mohamed Salah to the club, but German newspaper BILD claim that a move to Merseyside is now likely to happen this summer. BILD claims Liverpool officials recently opened preliminary talks with Bayern regarding a summer move – and the Reds are prepared to launch a £16m to complete the deal. The Switzerland international joined the Bundesliga giants from Basel in 2012 for around £10m but has since struggled for regular football both under Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola. After making just 10 Bundesliga starts last season - despite scoring six goals - Shaqiri himself recently suggested a summer move to the Premier League was possible– hinting Liverpool could be ...
Luke Shaw told Southampton on the final day of last season that he wanted to join Manchester United. Aurelio De Laurentiis has told Arsenal that they will have to pay Napoli a staggering £56m if they want to secure services of Lorenzo Insigne. Karim Benzema insists he does not fear the arrival of Liverpool striker Luis Suarez at Real Madrid. Jose Mourinho is not interested in selling midfielder Ramires and will reject the advances of Real Madrid to keep the Brazil star at Chelsea. Manchester City will receive a £2.5million bonus if AC Milan sell Italy striker Mario Balotelli. Jose Mourinho will reject any opening offer from Real Madrid for Ramires but the European champions are determined to sign the Brazilian. Mario Mandzukic has said he will leave German champions Bayern Munich after the World Cup because coach Pep Guardiola's style of play does not work to his strengths - putting a host of Premier League clubs on red alert. QPR have made a contract offer to free agent Rio Ferdinand who was released b ...
Today's Football Titbits Manchester United have moved ahead of Chelsea as they attempt to sign Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas because they will not be in next season's Champions League and are not viewed as direct rivals by the La Liga club. Diego Costa's £32m move to Chelsea from Atletico Madrid will be the Premier League club's biggest deal of the summer and will also spark the exits of strikers Fernando Torres and Demba Ba Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola wants to sell midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, and the 29-year-old Germany international could be a target for Manchester United. And finally German striker Stefan Kiessling has taken his World Cup 2014 omission in good humour by featuring in an advert with the tag line, "It is always best at home.

Mark Ogden writing in the Daily Telegraph just a few short weeks ago. Do you think your bosses should keep you on the payroll Mark? You stupid *** Pellegrini cannot shed nearly-man tag In the global game, there are some managers whose track record comes with a virtual guarantee of success. Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti win trophies wherever they go and they have acquired the knack of getting their teams to cross the line when it matters. City knew Ancelotti and Mourinho would be on the market last summer, but just like Manchester United with David Moyes, they chose a different solution and selected Manuel Pellegrini in order to embrace ‘holistic’ approach. But while Pellegrini forged a reputation in Spain for building teams at unfashionable clubs, he arrived at City with a gaping hole in his CV when it comes to winning big prizes. And with the finishing line looming in the Premier League, Pellegrini has failed to motivate his players and drive them on at the crucial time.
Manchester United would be challenging for the Premier League this season had Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola replaced Sir Alex Ferguson, says former assistant manager Rene Meulensteen. Both coaches were understood to be candidates to succeed Ferguson upon his retirement, but the Red Devils opted to bring in David Moyes.
Ryan: Giggs: Man Utd role has echoes of Pep Guardiola - Bruce Ryan Giggs could succeed as Manchester United manager in the same way as Pep Guardiola thrived at Barcelona, says Old Trafford stalwart Steve Bruce. Giggs, 40, is temporary boss for the final four games of the Premier League season after David Moyes's sacking. Hull City boss Bruce said: "There's been a lot of players who've jumped in. Guardiola, [Jurgen] Klinsmann - big players in big jobs. He might win the next four games and give them something to think about." Fellow Premier League manager - and United fans' favourite - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Welshman Giggs is destined to be a manager at the highest level. "I have spoken to Giggsy, of course, and I wished him all the best," said the Cardiff City boss
Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: "We will attack. I always try to put in the head of my players that we will attack in every game but then we have to be careful about the counter. "To defend 1-1 would be a mistake, Manchester United is the best team in the Premier League away from home and they have the quality to score. We have to attack - score one, two or as much as possible."
Wayne Rooney starts for Manchester United as they attempt to book a last four spot at the expense of holders Bayern Munich. TEAM NEWS Bayern will be without three key midfielders for the quarter-final second leg, evenly poised after last week's 1-1 draw. Bastian Schweinsteiger is suspended following his first leg sending-off, Javier Martinez also misses out through suspension, while a third key midfielder, Thiago Alcantara, is out injured. Manchester United have doubts over the fitness of Wayne Rooney, although the striker has travelled to Bavaria despite his injured toe, which was heavily bruised in last week's first leg at Old Trafford. Ashley Young is also doubtful after picking up a hand injury in the weekend's win over Newcastle in the Premier League. But experienced left-back Patrice Evra has indicated he expects to be fit enough to return to the side after missing the first leg through suspension and despite struggling with a knee problem. MANAGER QUOTES Pep Guardiola: "They'll be looking to hit us ...

So, Manchester United salvage some much-needed pride after a disappointing domestic campaign by holding European champions Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. What did we learn from their performance? Why can't David Moyes's team produce that level of display on the Premier League stage? Can United stop the Bayern juggernaut in the return leg in Munich on 9 April? It was hardly a classic performance from Manchester United, but it was of rare vintage compared to the surrender offered up in the face of Liverpool and Manchester City. The reigning champions were given a full-on fight and for a few brief minutes Old Trafford held its breath in the hope that United might even take a lead to Germany when Nemanja Vidic headed them in front just before the hour. The sight of Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, usually cool elegance personified, stalking his technical area in frustration, was a tribute to United's doggedness and organisation as well as Bayern's own failure, at times bordering on a point-blank refu ...
Manchester United are still in with a real shout of progressing to the semi-finals of the Champions League after last night’s battling 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich at Old Trafford. The second leg of the quarter-final is on 9 April, but before then the Reds travel to Newcastle in the Premier League. How should David Moyes approach his team selection for Saturday’s match on Tyneside? Bayern boss Pep Guardiola says he will rest some of his key players, so should the United manager do the same?
Manchester United can win with their best performance of the season, warns Guardiola The 43-year-old sympathised with David Moyes for the position his team are in but believes the Red Devils are still one of the best teams in the world By Peter McVitie Mar 31, 2014 6:30:00 PM Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has stressed his side cannot underestimate Manchester United in Tuesday's Champions League clash. The English and German champions meet at Old Trafford for the first leg of their quarter-final tie in starkly different circumstances, with United languishing in seventh place in the Premier League while Bayern have romped to the Bundesliga title in record time. But Guardiola is adamant that Moyes' side are still strong enough to beat the Bavarian giants should they deliver their very best form. "Manchester United are one of the world's best teams," the Spaniard told reporters in his press conference. "It doesn't matter what situation they're in right now. "They have good players. These two games could b ...
Mar 21, 2014 11:15:00 AM The titleholders have been paired with the English champions, Real Madrid take on last year's finalists Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona will meet Atletico, while PSG take on Chelsea BET = FCL £80 DRAW £44 PSG £14 Bayern Munich will take on Manchester United in the standout tie of the Champions League quarter-finals. Pep Guardiola's men are keen to become the first club to successfully defend the title, but will have to deal with the champions of England first, with the first leg scheduled to take place at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, Real Madrid will be gunning for revenge against Borussia Dortmund after last year's elimination in the semi-finals, while Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain meet the Premier League's table-toppers, Chelsea, as the French outfit aim to improve on last year's run to the last eight. Finally, Barcelona have been paired with Atletico Madrid, which will be a particularly interesting fixture given Diego Simeone's men caused the Catalans all kinds of trouble in ...
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is the best-paid coach in world football, according to a new list released on Tuesday. French weekly sports publication France Football have published their annual rich list, which shows Mourinho is now out-earning his coaching nemesis, Bayern Munich's Pep Guardiola – who has the second-largest coaching salary in the world game. The Blues boss – who earns a cool €17m a year – had suggested he took a pay cut to return to Stamford Bridge last summer, but that assertion has been dashed by the latest index. Arsene Wenger is the next best-paid Premier League boss, receiving little over half that of Mourinho, while former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is enjoying a bumper pay day at Galatasaray, having left the Etihad last summer. Mancini squeezes into the top three, edging ahead of Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti on €14m a year. Despite receiving a €1.5m pay rise after quitting Paris Saint-Germain for the Bernabeu, Ancelotti - who was on the podium in l . ...
Arsenal's summer transfer targets Julian Draxler Arsenal attempted to secure a deal for Julian Draxler in January but Schalke chief Horst Heldt has since revealed he knocked back all offers. Heldt, however, could be powerless in the summer and Arsene Wenger is widely expected to return with a swoop for the Germany international. Bayern Munich are also sniffing. Mario Mandzukic Reports suggest Mario Mandzukic's playing style does not suit the ideals of Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola. Despite a strong start to the campaign and an impressive tally of 18 goals, Mandzukic could leave Munich with Robert Lewandowski joining in the summer. Seamus Coleman Bacary Sagna will become a free agent in the summer and - if the club can’t agree a new deal for the Frenchman - Arsene Wenger may turn his attention to Everton’s Seamus Coleman. The attacking full-back has scored five Premier League goals this term but will demand a sizeable fee having signed a long-term deal at Goodison Park last season. Edin Dzeko Edin D ...
Champions League Barca, Bayern cast huge shadow over English opponents Arsenal and Manchester City face monumental tasks when they visit European powerhouses Bayern Munich and Barcelona looking to overturn 2-0 deficits in the second legs of their Champions League last-16 ties. Arsenal must overcome Pep Guardiola and his red-hot Bayern side at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday after goals from Toni Kroos and Thomas Mueller condemned them to defeat in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium last month. City, meanwhile, travel to the Nou Camp on Wednesday with their own mountain to climb after goals from Lionel Messi and Dani Alves gave Barcelona a commanding advantage midway through the tie. In the week's other last-16 ties, Atletico Madrid face AC Milan at the Vicente Calderon with a 1-0 lead on Tuesday before Paris St Germain host Bayer Leverkusen at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday with a 4-0 advantage after the first leg. Arsenal, third in the Premier League, have the unenviable task of trying to become only ...
Pep Guardiola says he hopes Toni Kroos stays at Bayern Munich but Man Utd target admits " Premier League is a possibility for me". Henry Winter reports
Arsenal v Bayern Munich: The win that kick-started a Gunners revival Comments (276) Arsenal face Champions League holders Bayern Munich at Emirates Stadium after taking two significant steps on the road to recovery from their public humiliation at Liverpool. Manager Arsene Wenger knew his side needed a response to that 5-1 defeat at Anfield with their season reaching defining moments on three fronts. This has been achieved with a solid, if unspectacular, clean sheet in the goalless draw at home to Manchester United and then by exacting revenge on Liverpool with an FA Cup fifth round victory at the Emirates. So with the Premier League ship steadied and FA Cup progress secured, the greatest test of all now comes in the shape of a last-16 Champions League meeting with Bayern, arguably Europe's finest side now under the guidance of coach Pep Guardiola, twice a winner in this competition with Barcelona. And with confidence being rebuilt in the past week, can Arsenal take further solace in their victory in The ...
Alan Smith says Arsenal face an 'incredibly difficult' task against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night. The Gunners host the reigning Champions League title-holders and Bundesliga leaders at the Emirates live on Sky this week in the first of their two-leg knockout round contest. The fixture comes midway through a mixed month for the North London side, who have slipped from the Premier League summit after a 5-1 thrashing by Liverpool but also recorded an FA Cup win over the same opponents and drawn with Manchester United in February. However, ex-Arsenal striker Smith says his former club must be at their absolute best when they tackle Pep Guardiola's side. "You've got to fear for Arsenal against what is probably the best team in Europe," he told The Footballers' Football Show. "Bayern just look formidable and without a weakness. "Arsenal have got to do everything right and particularly defensively they have to be spot on. They've got a chance but only a very slim chance over two legs. It's going to be incred ...

Pellegrini now targets Gunners 11 Dec 2013 10:24:20 Manchester City's Manuel Pellegrini admitted keeping his stars fresh for Saturday's Premier League visit from leaders Arsenal had been a factor in their stunning 3-2 win at Bayern Munich. On a historic night for the club, City fought back from two-goals down to break the holders' record 10-match Champions League winning streak as Bayern coach Pep Guardiola suffered his first defeat in major competition with the German side. Bayern also fell to their first home defeat -- after 18 wins in Munich -- since losing 2-0 at home to Arsenal in last season's knock-out stages of the Champions League in March. With both teams already through to the knock-out stages, City avenged October's 3-1 defeat to Bayern at the Etihad Stadium, but still finished second to the Germans in Group D with both teams on 15 points. City winger James Milner completed the fairytale fightback with the 62nd-minute winner, but a 4-2 win would have sent Pellegrini's side through as Group D w ...

Stamford Bridge side want Etihad Stadium ace. Chelsea are reportedly ready to challenge Bayern Munich in the pursuit of Man City striker Sergio Aguero according to TuttoMercato. The West London side are being linked with a stunning 50m (£42m) bid for the in-form Argentine as Jose Mourinho looks to address his stuttering Stamford Bridge strike-force. Mourinho's current quartet of strikers, Demba Ba, Samuel Eto'o, Fernando Torres and Andre Schurrle have scored just three Premier League goals between them this year, indeed loaned out Belgian Romelu Lukaku has outscored them by managing five in five appearances for Everton. Pep Guardiola is apparently keen on bringing 25 year old Aguero to the Allianz Arena but Mourinho may have other ideas though one wonders if Man City would consider any offers for such a pivotal player, especially one who has only recently been tied down to a long term contract. The former Atletico Madrid man has been a massive success since making his £38m move to the Etihad Stadium bac ...
Bayern leave City chasing shadows 03 October By Justin Palmer London - Holders Bayern Munich left Champions League aspirants Manchester City chasing shadows with a 3-1 win on Wednesday to serve notice Pep Guardiola will leave no stone unturned to re-establish their continental dominance. Franck Ribery, Thomas Mueller and Arjen Robben scored as Bayern left shellshocked City chasing shadows for much of a one-sided Group D encounter that ended the Premier League team's five-year unbeaten run at home in Europe. Cristiano Ronaldo's hot form continued with a double in Real Madrid's 4-0 rout of FC Copenhagen but he was not the only revered striker among the goals with Zlatan Ibrahimovic also netting twice as Paris St Germain brushed aside Benfica 3-0. Both, though, were outshone by Greece forward Kostas Mitroglou who grabbed a hat-trick in Olympiakos Piraeus's 3-0 romp at Anderlecht. A dramatic finale in Turin saw Galatasaray, with manager Roberto Mancini Taking Charge for the first time, *** a 2-2 draw with ...
Bundesliga Bayern not interested in Luiz, no Gomez sale yet Bayern Munich sports director Matthias Sammer has said the club have no interest in signing Chelsea's David Luiz and denied any deal had been reached to sell Mario Gomez to Fiorentina. Newspaper speculation had linked Chelsea defender Luiz with a big money move to Bayern as Pep Guardiola is believed to be a big fan of the Brazilian. However, when asked if Luiz was a player the club was interested in, he simply said "No" and refused to expand on his answer. In regards to Gomez, Fiorentina have already declared their interest in the striker who has also been linked with Napoli and clubs in the Premier League. Sky Sports Italia had reported that a fee of around €18m had been agreed between the clubs but Sammer said the club "had not yet received a bid which they are satisfied with" for Gomez and added that the striker is expected to travel to Bayern's pre-season training camp in Trentino.
Marca splash with the claim today that Luis Suarez agreed personal terms “weeks ago” on a move to Real Madrid. However, Suarez is now exploring other offers (which could include Premier League rivals Manchester City) due to the delay in Real Madrid making an offer to Liverpool. Now Carlo Ancelotti is installed as Real Madrid coach, Los Blancos will decide whether to bid 47 million euros (his release clause, according to Marca) for Suarez. The decision rests with Ancelotti and Marca suggest Suarez now has other offers available, comparable in financial terms. Suarez has reportedly grown impatient whilst at the Confederations Cup and new Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola is also tracking developments. Much like many other players who could be on the move (e.g. Gonzalo Higuain, David Luiz), the transfer market now looks set to get busier after Carlo Ancelotti and Laurent Blanc were installed at Real Madrid and PSG, respectively on Tuesday. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been very busy in the transfer ...

Jose Mourinho has told Wayne Rooney to base the decision on his future on what makes him happiest rather than on money, as the new Chelsea manager arrived to a barrage of questions on what his club’s next move will be in the transfer market. The England striker's future is still uncertain following Sir Alex Ferguson's claim that he had asked to leave the club and the 27-year-old will be a target for Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League if Manchester United permit him to be sold this summer. With Arsenal already discussing the possibility of a move for the player, Chelsea would also be interested in Rooney. Mourinho said: "I think he [Rooney] is at a fantastic age for a player: maturity, big experience, still young. It's up to him and what he wants, what makes him happy. He's a little bit like me: he doesn't need one more pound in his contract. One more cup won't make a different. Be happy. Where is he happy? Where will he find more happiness to have ambition and drive him? I like him as a boy. I wi ...
When you consider Edison Cavani's buyout clause, £51m, I think it will be more stupendous for Chelsea to go for Rooney who would cost less than half of Cavani's fees. Wayne Rooney is a tested and trusted Premier League material. Unlike Cavani who would need time to understand the technicalities and the tempo of the athletic and pacy EPL. Put Rooney against Cavani, i'll take Wazza. NB: Cavani is good but his huge fees puts me off. We can't afford to cough out another whopping £50m on a striker we aren't sure would click. No. Not again.
The Robert Lewandowski saga is coming to a close - with the Manchester United and Chelsea target declaring that a move to Bayern Munich is all but done. United have been linked with the Borussia Dortmund striker for over a year, while Chelsea's interest is relatively recent. But the Premier League heavyweights have missed out on the Poland international, who is set for Champions League winners Bayern. Pep Guardiola will take charge of the Bundesliga giants this summer - fresh from their Treble glory under Jupp Heynckes - and Lewandowski is set to move to the Allianz Arena too. "We have an agreement for quite some time (with Bayern)," the Pole told Bild. "I have informed the person in charge. I assume that now everything is clear and I may change clubs this summer. That would be best for all parties." The news comes as another bitter blow for Dortmund, who have already lost the excellent Mario Gotze to their bitter rivals.
Mourinho a ´disaster ´ for Chelsea, warns Barca chief Read full story:30 May 2013 11:56 Barcelona vice-president Carles Vilarrubi has warned a returning Jose Mourinho would be "a disaster" for Chelsea. Mourinho's departure from Real Madrid was confirmed last week by Real president Florentino Perez and the Portuguese is widely expected to return to Chelsea, where he previously won two Premier League titles. However, Vilarrubi has said Mourinho will not replicate the success he enjoyed at Stamford Bridge when he was last there. "It is not good for English football," Vilarrubi told The Daily Telegraph. "Chelsea maybe think they had a good time from him in the past, but you will see the real Mourinho now. "If he behaves like he did in Spain it will only be an unhappy relationship. A disaster. And at his age he is not going to change." Mourinho clashed a number of times with Real's rivals Barcelona, particularly former Barca boss Pep Guardiola, but Vilarrubi feels it is more than simply a feud between the tw ...

There will be plenty of players on show tomorrow evening, who have been linked with Premier League switches and could find themselves playing English football next year. Arjen Robben The Dutch winger has been touted as a possible target for Manchester City . He’s shrugged that off but a poor performance in the final could encourage City to make a bid, especially as Pep Guardiola could make some big personnel changes at the club this summer. Mario Gomez The experienced German centre forward has been on Chelsea ’s radar according to the press, but he’s unlikely to start in the final. If he doesn’t feature at all, that will hurt him and could cause him to take up any offer to play for Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge. Dante Brazilian central defender Dante has been suggested as a possible transfer target for Arsenal . The Gunners could axe Thomas Varmaelen this summer, which creates a big hole in the middle of their side and Arsene Wenger could aggressively pursue a player of Dante’s quality. Rober ...
Premier League clubs have been put on alert after new Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola made Arjen Robben available for transfer
Torres has scored just 14 Premier League goals since his British transfer record switch from Liverpool and the report says Chelsea may finally be ready to add further competition for the centre-forward role. It also claims Blues owner Roman Abramovich will sanction the move for Gomez, despite having just signed Demba Ba from Newcastle United in January. Gomez scored 41 goals for Bayern last season playing in a similar role to the centre-forwards at Chelsea. However, this impressive record couldn’t save him from the axe this season and he has played second fiddle to summer signing Mario Mandzukic. The report says incoming boss Pep Guardiola is unlikely to see a future for the 27-year-old striker and he could be available in the summer. Chelsea will have to be prepared to dig deep if they want to sign Gomez this summer, as he reportedly has a price tag in the region of £36million.

The Anfield based club are currently eighth in the Premier League table, three points off their Merseyside rivals Everton who sit in sixth place. Suarez has been in superb form this season and has already notched 25 goals in his 37 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side . And ex-Anfield favourite Mellor believes Liverpool must do all they can to hold on to the former Ajax hitman. “He’s one of the best players in Europe and those sort of people always get linked wi ...
Gareth Bale says Cristiano Ronaldo is a more "complete footballer" than Barcelona's Lionel Messi . The in-form Spurs attacker, who is rumoured to be a transfer target for both Real Madrid and Bayern Munich this summer, has scored 13 Premier League goals so far this season. Asked the question, "Messi or Ronaldo?" by Life's a Pitch , Bale revealed his admiration for Los Blancos ' star. "For me, personally, I’d say Ronaldo," the 23-year-old Welshman responded. "He’s got the whole package. He’s strong, he’s powerful, he’s pacey, can head the ball, strike the ball. Obviously, you can’t say anything bad about Messi, but for the all-round complete footballer, I’d say Cristiano Ronaldo." The comments are likely to be taken as a welcome sign by Real Madrid that the Wales international would relish the chance to link up with Ronaldo. According to reports, Los Merengues are expected to challenge Bayern for his signature at the end of the season in a move thought to potentially be worth around €50 mil ...

Roman Abramovich’s worst fears came true when Pep Guardiola snubbed Chelsea’s millions to join Bayern Munich. Pep Guardiola's snub for Roman Abramovich reveals the fatal flaw at the heart of his Chelsea Empire On the Football Association’s 150th birthday Pep Guardiola praised the English game and then kicked it where it hurts, rejecting Chelsea to join Bayern Munich. Here at the Bridge of sighs, there was no great surprise when Guardiola elected not to stand at the wrong end of Roman Abramovich’s itchy trigger finger. The Chelsea crowd have become unshockable. They have seen Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Roberto Di Matteo take a Russian bullet and have given up trying to decipher what might happen next. After Pep Guardiola has made up his mind to manage Bayern Munich, following frantic efforts by Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich to bring the managerial "golden boy" to the Stamford Bridge, what is left for Chelsea, who, day by day, were growing in confidence to snap up Pep Guardiola? Here I present to you the list of managers who Chelsea could fall on should they dispense off the services of Rafael Benitez at the end of the season, who is also rumoured to have agreed a deal in principle to become the next Real Madrid gaffer: * Jose Mourinho (Real Madrid) The first manager to have served under Roman Abramovich and the first to have parted ways with the club under Roman Abramovich after delivering 6 trophies in his three-year spell at the club, including the much sought after Premier League trophy that had proved elusive for over 45 years. Chelsea vs. Queens Park Rangers: Getting desperate for Harry Redknapp QPR are very desperate for points, but they'll find them hard to come by at Stamford Bridge. The much-hyped post-court case battle between Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea this fall produced a dull 0-0 draw where a fierce, hotly contested derby should have taken place. Hopefully, with new management on both sides, Wednesday evening's encounter is a bit more entertaining for the neutrals. After a very rocky start under Rafael Benitez, Chelsea look like they might finally be hitting their stride. They're probably in too much of a hole to compete for a title, but they look like a team that should comfortably finish in the top four to put themselves in a great position to excel when either Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho becomes their club savior this summer. QPR are in a much different situation, sitting on the bottom of the table. If it takes 40 points to survive in the Premier League most seasons, they need to start racking up results quic ...

NOW OR NEVER FOR FERGIE? Saturday evening Premier League encounter with an obdurate West Bromwich Albion side. Manchester United lead by a goal with injury time left. Robin Van Persie (who had come on in the 65th minute for Shinji Kagawa) grabs his customary goal to consolidate the Red Devils’ 7-point lead over city rivals and parvenu Manchester City at the summit of the league. What a birthday gift for Sir Alex Ferguson, who turns 71 today! That win obviated any form of post-Christmas hangover that engulfed the Mancunian red-half last year on Fergie’s 70th birthday in a 2-3 loss to struggling Blackburn. Paul Merson on Arsenal's defeat to Swansea MERSE: "It isn't good enough and sooner or later something has to happen there. I wouldn't sack Arsene Wenger because who would Arsenal get and who would take the job? Pep Guardiola wouldn't it in in a month of Sundays. They have to bring in a better quality of player in January, though, as it is unbelievable how far that club has gone backwards. Seven or eight years ago they were probably they best team you will ever see in Premier League history and they should have gone forward - but not one player in this current team would have got in the 'Invincibles' team."
Former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola is heading to the Premier League, and Arsenal is the 'perfect' job. That is the view of former Barca defender Rafael Marquez.
If ever there were a good time for Manchester City to suffer the humiliation of a second successive Champions League exit it might just have been this week. Chelsea have stolen the thunder that was headed their way. The heat is not exactly off Roberto Mancini but he is probably glad not to be Roberto Di Matteo, or, to extend beyond that, coach of Chelsea. Wednesday's draw crystallised his own position: fail to defend the Premier League title and he will be out on his ear. Even then, he might still be removed if Manchester City win the Pep Guardiola beauty contest. That eventuality might just suit Rafa Benitez, of course, though he starts a new job with his future already bound up in the whims of another man, one he was happy to compliment during a Thursday tea-time unveiling. Pep talk will envelop both clubs until the Catalan has decided his direction, a decision day believed to be months away. With Champions League dreams all but extinguished for both of the country's richest clubs, the comparative munda ...
Mikel Arteta says he left Barcelona early in his career because he was behind Pep Guardiola and Xavi in the club's pecking order. The Arsenal midfielder left the Nou Camp as a 17-year-old after receiving a call from Paris Saint-Germain. He spent two years in France, before enjoying a spell with Rangers in the Scottish Premier League and a return to Spain with Real Sociedad. Arteta told AS: "I was playing in Barcelona and Guardiola and Xavi were ahead of me; it was a complicated situation. By that time I was 17 and Luis Fernandez called me from PSG to sign me. The next day I was already flying to Paris." The 30-year-old moved to Everton in 2005 and fell in love with the English game, becoming one of the Premier League's most consistent performers over the next seven years. "Premier League and La Liga are different between them. Each one has its good and bad things. An unquestionable Premier League advantage is the great atmosphere you live in every single game, no matter who you are playing against." Meanw ...
Abramovic ready to pay big bucks for Liverpool star. Chelsea want Luis Suarez and reckon they can land the Anfield star by installing Pep Guardiola as boss, writes the Sunday People. After yet another impotent display from Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend there is growing apprehension that once again this season could end trophy-less for Arsene Wenger’s men. The great feats Wenger has achieved at the club and the obvious admiration he has for all his players and fans leaves talk of him being replaced by Harry Redknapp or Pep Guardiola redundant. Like Sir Alex at Manchester United it would appear the only time Wenger will leave his current station is if he opts to walk the plank voluntarily. January however must be a month of activity for The Gunners if they are to win any silverware this season. First of all Andre Santos must go. Antonio Valencia made him look like a pub player at Old Trafford, and that is being harsh on pub players. Then there are the abject attacking options on offer. Olivier Giroud seems talented enough but he is ...
A list of potential successors to Sir Alex Ferguson, have been drawn up and hidden away in a locker at Old Trafford. Vice-chairman of the club, Ed Woodward, says only a select fewknow the names on the list, evenas no date has been set for the Scot to step down, after a long trophy-laden reign as the club’s manager. “We have a view as to what thatprocess [appointing a new manager] will look like in terms of finding a replacement and what type of manager we want and how and when we’ll go about it,” he said. “But it’s in the drawer and long may it stay in the drawer.” In the recent past, coaches like Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and even David Moyes, have been linked with the post. But it is still not clear when Ferguson intends to step down. “I don’t know how long I can last now but if my health stays up I don’t think another two or threeyears would harm me any,” the 70-year-old said at his 25th anniversary as boss, earlier this year. “I think you need stamina in my job. I am blessed ...
Fabregas joined Barcelona from Arsenal last summer but did not lift the Spanish title during his first season at Camp Nou, as Pep Guardiola's side finished runners-up to Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid. The 25-year-old has now admitted he was shocked at the quality of football in La Liga and believes the competition is more difficult than the English Premier League. "When I returned to Spain (from Arsenal) I was taken aback by the fact that La Liga is harder to win than the Premier League," he said. "In England it's easier to win the league, because even if you lose five or six games you still have a good chance. "Spanish teams are better prepared tactically. It is more difficult to score and assist here as there is less freedom and more pressing. England is more fun because it is less defensive." Barca are currently top of La Liga after winning all five of their matches at the start of the new season.
It makes perfect sense, therefore, that he is thinking ahead to make sure United are in the best possible shape when he eventually retires - and he is likely to have the deciding say on who succeeds him at Old Trafford. Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola are, in Ferguson’s mind, the only two candidates who can take on a job that is virtually impossible. How do you replace the greatest club manager ever, a man who has won 12 Premier League titles? It is not a task that someone like David Moyes could take on with confidence given he has never won a trophy with Everton. Nor is it a job for a United legend like Ryan Giggs or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Yes, they are certainly the type of figures who know the club and are worth having in the coaching set-up, but the job is too big for them. A few years ago, the likes of Roy Keane, Steve Bruce and Mark Hughes were all being mentioned as potential replacements for Ferguson but would not even make a 50-man longlist now. No. Replacing the best requires the best. Ferguson ...

Roberto Di Matteo is set to be named Chelsea manager on a full-time basis, according to widespread reports. The Italian guided the Blues to a FA Cup win and a first ever Champions League crown after taking over on a temporary capacity in March following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas. Those accomplishments seem to have persuaded owner Roman Abramovich to reward Di Matteo with a permanent role, after reported previous target Pep Guardiola elected to take a year out of management. It has been speculated that Di Matteo will be offered an initial one-year contract with an option for a further season. Chelsea’s league campaign, however, was disappointing, as the west London outfit eventually slipped to sixth place in the Premier League, their worst finish since Abramovich bought the club in 2003. Pep Guardiola, who is wanted by Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC, is the greatest coach in FC Barcelona history, according to midfielder Cesc Fabregas
Why Liverpool have better chance than Chelsea of convincing Guardiola about England move Those who observe him closely are adamant: Pep Guardiola will step away from the game once his time is up at Barcelona. But if the departing coach is tempted by a move to the Premier League, it is Liverpool, not Chelsea, which will have the greater chance of convincing him to cut short any sabbatical. Roman Abramovich will throw the bank at Guardiola to persuade him to move to London after Friday's Copa del Rey final. Huge wages, a massive transfer budget and inheriting the new European champions - it has to be an attractive proposition. But it is struggling Liverpool which is the better fit for the Spaniard. At Anfield, Guardiola will instantly recognise the youth structure put in place by Former Barcelona coaches Rodolfo Borrell and Jose Segura. Both men were tempted to Merseyside by Rafa Benitez to overhaul Liverpool's development system and the club is now reaping the rewards with the likes of Martin Kelly, Jack R ...
