From full-backs in midfield to diamond formations: Reviewing 2014's tactics DECEMBER 30, 2014 11:54:12 AM PST By Michael Cox Tactically, 2014 was an interesting year for football at both club and international level, with more variety than usual, and some intriguing concepts being popularised -- or re-popularised. Here's a review of some of the most interesting tactical features of 2014. Guardiola's full-backs in midfield It's extremely rare to see players in positions you've never seen before, but Pep Guardiola's use of Philipp Lahm and David Alaba early in 2014 was genuinely revolutionary. It was particularly noticeable against Manchester United in last season's Champions League: their defensive positioning was that of natural full-backs, but rather than surging down the flanks to make overlapping runs, they instead drifted into central midfield positions. The idea, supposedly, was to allow Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery to come deep and collect possession with space to run into -- without overcrowding ...

UPDATES... Moyes: I'm more like Jose Mourinho than Pep Guardiola New Real Sociedad coach David Moyes has compared his management style to that of Jose Mourinho, while saying his new challenge is similar to that faced when he took over at Everton in 2002. Moyes has returned to football with the Liga side eight months after being fired by Manchester United less than a year into his contract at Old Trafford. The Scot takes over the Basque club with the team 15th in the Primera Division table, having won just two of their first 11 domestic games, while they were dumped out of the Europa League by FC Krasnodar in the qualifying stages. Moyes was asked at his unveiling on Thursday whether his style of management was closer to that of ex-Real Madrid boss Mourinho or Former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola. He responded by saying that his "tough" approach made him more similar to the current Chelsea manager, and also took the opportunity to compare his new challenge to the one he faced when arriving at Goodison Park ...
According to the expectations Pep Guardiola is planning to leave Bayern Munich next season- just when Arsene Wenger might be ready to retire as Arsenal manager. Last week Wenger’s future as the manager of the Gunners was the object of speculation. Carlo Ancelotti and Paul Clement where discussed as potential successors. But the Evening Standard says Guardiola has emerged as a more serious option and Arsenal will look to move for him in 2016. Guardiola states that he is leaving Bayern for a new challenge presumably at the Premier League. The Former Barcelona boss is expected to head Chelsea, Manchester City or Manchester United. Guardiola signed a three-year contract at Bayern but according to the rumours he has no wish to stay longer after 2016. Arsenal would have competition to this appointment and if a deal could be agreed, Wenger would most likely move upstairs into a director role.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has laid into Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure. Scholes has suggested that the way Toure plays is a problem for the side when they are under pressure against big teams who know how to exploit Toure’s defensive weakness. “I felt that it was the same old story in the Champions League for Manuel Pellegrini’s team. Yaya Touré’s lack of defensive work in midfield has become a major problem for them,” wrote Scholes in his column for the Independent. “The amount of time I saw opponents get in behind him in the game in Munich was quite remarkable. He just did not look interested. Alongside him, Fernandinho is having to do the work of two players defensively and against Bayern that was always going to cause City problems.” Scholes’ comments echo the frustrations felt by many Manchester City fans over the way Toure played, capped off by the midfielder laughing and joking with Bayern boss Pep Guardiola after the game. There’s no doubt that Toure is a trul ...

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola believes the absence of Manchester United from this season's Champions League serves as a warning to all elite clubs, reports BBC Sport. United are sitting out the competition for the first time since 1995 after finishing seventh in the Premier League last season. "It is a good lesson for the big clubs if we think we are unbeatable, that we are so strong," Guardiola said ahead of his side's Champions League tie with Manchester City on Wednesday. "Every year we need to make the good things or maybe next season you could be out. That is why football is magnificent. Every single week you have to be ready."

Xherdan Shaqiri Xherdan ShaqiriReuters Liverpool are reportedly leading the race ahead of Manchester United to sign Xherdan Shaqiri - after Merseyside officials opened talks with Bayern Munich over a £16m summer deal. Brendan Rodgers was reportedly keen on signing the 22-year-old winger during the January transfer window after failing to bring Mohamed Salah to the club, but German newspaper BILD claim that a move to Merseyside is now likely to happen this summer. BILD claims Liverpool officials recently opened preliminary talks with Bayern regarding a summer move – and the Reds are prepared to launch a £16m to complete the deal. The Switzerland international joined the Bundesliga giants from Basel in 2012 for around £10m but has since struggled for regular football both under Jupp Heynckes and Pep Guardiola. After making just 10 Bundesliga starts last season - despite scoring six goals - Shaqiri himself recently suggested a summer move to the Premier League was possible– hinting Liverpool could be ...

Xherdan Shaqiri has made it clear he does not want to stay at Bayern Munich unless he is given more opportunities by Pep Guardiola. The 22-year-old moved to the German Champions from FC Basel two years ago but has never been able to secure a regular starting spot in Bavaria. Shaqiri was linked with Manchester United thanks to his brother and agent who said he’d be ready to listen to offers from clubs like United in the summer. Although he did try to backtrack from these comments, the tone was indicative of his unhappiness at Bayern, something which is reflected in his latest comments too. “I’m not going to go through another year like this,” he said according to FIFA. “If not much changes, then I will have to change something. “We’ll just have to s..
Manchester United have been afforded a massive boost to their transfer plans for the summer, as it’s been revealed that Pep Guardiola is willing to listen to offers for Bastian Schweinsteiger. Recent reports have suggested that the Germany international, who has enjoyed a long and successful career at the Allianz Arena, has been earmarked as Louis Van Gaal’s top target, and that the Dutchman wants him over a number of other midfielders. And now, courtesy of the Express, it’s believed that £10million may be enough to land the 29-year-old, as Guardiola doesn’t consider him to rank amongst Bayern Munich’s key players. Whilst Van Gaal would look to make Schweinsteiger an essential component in his new-look United side, Guardiola is keen to given Thiago Alcantara plenty of game-time next season, and so is willing to shift his vice-captain to make room. As such he will listen to United’s offer - should they choose to lodge a formal bid - and give his consent to the sale providing he deems it suitab ...

Manchester United have been informed they can land Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger for a knockdown fee. The Daily Mail says United boss Louis Van Gaal has dismissed Cesc Fabregas and Toni Kroos from the club's list of targets for this summer. The Dutchman has, however, been linked with Bayern Munich talisman Schweinsteiger and the word out of Munich is that Pep Guardiola would be willing to listen to offers of £10million for the 29-year-old midfielder. Schweinsteiger, whose name cropped up during David Moyes's tenure at United, is also interested in a new challenge. The old regime had concerns about his fitness and value for money, given that he earns £8m a year but Van Gaal worked with the Germany star at Bayern and knows him better than most.

Real Madrid TEMPTS LIVERPOOL FOR SUAREZ Liverpool gun Luis Suarez might have told teammates he intends to stay at the club, but will the Barclays Premier League runners up be able to resist should Real Madrid come calling with $182 million? The Daily Mail – quoting sources within the Bernabeu – claims Real will bid that figure for the injured Uruguayan should Karim Benzema, who is chasing a substantial pay rise, not agree to a new deal at the Spanish club. Former Los Blancos president Ramon Calderon added credence to the speculation when he claimed Real Madrid could indeed go after the striker – who topped the EPL scoring charts with 31 goals this season. “Karim Benzema is a good player, but it is true he didn’t score as many goals as people thought (he should),” Calderon told talkSPORT. “Luis Suarez, no doubt, ...
Louis Van Gaal doesn't want Kroos/Fabregas. Van Gaal has his own transfer plans.. Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal has scratched the names of Toni Kroos and Francesc Fabregas off of his transfer wish list for the summer, as he focuses on the capture of Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger. According to report Dutchman, who is preparing to make large scale changes to the first team squad which faltered under David Moyes for the majority of the last campaign, has set his sights firmly on the German international, and isn’t fazed at all by the idea of not getting Fabregas or Kroos. Both of those men were initially believed to be high on the agenda in terms of the players set to be bought in to Old Trafford before next season, but Van Gaal, it would seem, has very different ideas to those of his predecessor. What’s more interesting is that Schweinsteiger could be available for as little as £10million this summer, as Pep Guardiola doesn’t rate him as an invaluable asset, particularly with youn ...

SPORTS UPDATE WITH EMMAH ATAI: Louis Van Gaal has promised to "make history" and return Manchester United to winning ways after being named as manager of "the biggest club in the world". MEANTIME, Reports are suggesting that the new boss has given the green light for his men to go and sign Toni Kroos, who is supposedly looking for a way out of Bayern Munich after falling out with Pep Guardiola. United have struggled to command the middle of the pitch over the past year and have needed a player to carry the ball into the offensive areas. After what always seemed destined to be a failure, Barcelona have reverted back to form and appointed former skipper and B team manager Luis Enrique to replace Gerardo Martino who left the club by mutual consent over the weekend, halfway through a two-season contract with the Catalan club. The move to appoint Enrique represents an attempt to return to the path laid out so successfully under the tenures of Guardiola and Villanova. Ashley Cole says he does not think he will ...
5 ways Van Gaal will change Manchester United Louis Van Gaal was on Monday confirmed as Manchester United's new manager. Here are five ways the appointment of the Dutchman will transform a club still reeling from one of their worst seasons in living memory. 1. Advantage Van Persie Perhaps the most immediate and tangible impact of Van Gaal’s appointment is likely to come in the appointment of a new captain. Had Moyes still been in charge this summer, there is little doubt that the man asked to replace the iconic Nemanja Vidic would have been Wayne Rooney – a player Moyes did everything to placate, bringing him in from the cold after he was cast out by Sir Alex Ferguson and giving him the biggest contract English football has ever known. Rooney, though, is likely to see his captaincy ambitions curbed by Van Gaal, who has installed Robin Van Persie as his captain with Netherlands and will surely do the same at Old Trafford. Indeed, Van Gaal’s appointment marks a turning point in the Rooney-Van Persie b ...
FA Cup final man-of-the-match Aaron Ramsey is the top summer target for Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola. Guardiola concedes he still has much work to do despite leading the club to four trophies in his first season. The Bundesliga champions won the DFB-Pokal at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on Saturday. Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea, 23, is discussing a new contract with Manchester United that could see his wages rise to £85,000 a week. Glen Johnson will not be handed a contract extension by Liverpool, who will let the England right-back run down the last 12 months of his current deal. Brighton are hoping to make Real Madrid coach Paul Clement their new manager. Swansea are hoping to land Ravel Morrison from West Ham for a cut-price £3.75million. Chelsea are stepping up their interest in Everton kid John Stones and want a £12million done before the World Cup. West Brom are hoping to sign Cardiff striker Fraizer Campbell. Fulham have made Stoke striker Cameron Jerome one of their key summer transfe ...

Mark Ogden writing in the Daily Telegraph just a few short weeks ago. Do you think your bosses should keep you on the payroll Mark? You stupid *** Pellegrini cannot shed nearly-man tag In the global game, there are some managers whose track record comes with a virtual guarantee of success. Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti win trophies wherever they go and they have acquired the knack of getting their teams to cross the line when it matters. City knew Ancelotti and Mourinho would be on the market last summer, but just like Manchester United with David Moyes, they chose a different solution and selected Manuel Pellegrini in order to embrace ‘holistic’ approach. But while Pellegrini forged a reputation in Spain for building teams at unfashionable clubs, he arrived at City with a gaping hole in his CV when it comes to winning big prizes. And with the finishing line looming in the Premier League, Pellegrini has failed to motivate his players and drive them on at the crucial time.

Louis Van Gaal is reportedly planning to arrive with a transfer coup Old Trafford and has set his sights on Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller. The Dutchman is likely to be announced as new Manchester United manager next week and has already been linked with Toni Kroos, Mats Hummels and Marco Reus. However, German newspaper Kicker reported that Muller is Van Gaal’s number one target and that he is the only manager the Germany striker would leave his boyhood club for. Muller is currently unhappy and frustrated with his role under Pep Guardiola, being on the fringes of the Bayern starting line-up. Van Gaal promoted Muller from the youth ranks at Bayern and helped him to establish himself as one of the Bundesliga’s shooting stars. Sources close to the player reportedly claim that Van Gaal’s imminent appointment as United boss has turned Muller's sights towards Old Trafford. The Germany international has scored 97 goals and assisted further 86 since debuting for Bayern in 2008. He is only 24 years old, but ...
Manchester United have received a massive boost in the form of Thomas Muller, who is willing to join the Red Devils in the summer, according to German newspaper Bild. The German forward is frustrated with his lack of opportunities at Bayern Munich and wants to follow Louis Van Gaal, who is set to be announced the new manager at United, to Old Trafford. The player wants to resume his relationship with the Dutchman, who gave him his first opportunity as a 19- year-old when Van Gaal managed the Bavarians from 2009 to 2011. New Bayern manager Pep Guardiola has used the player sparingly as a substitute and the player is looking for offers from abroad to keep his place in the starting line-up. The German is valued at a fee in the range of £35m but with United reportedly sitting on a transfer kitty of £150m, a transfer of such an order would not be an issue for the defending champions. United are looking to rebuild the team in the summer after a disappointing season under David Moyes. They are set to finish se ...

Pep Guardiola has called on Bayern Munich to back him or sack him in a move which could delay Manchester United's appointment of Louis Van Gaal. Guardiola suffered a humiliating Champions League elimination at the hands of Real Madrid this week, losing 4-0 at home in the semi-final second leg, and his footballing philosophy has been criticised by Franz Beckenbauer and other senior Bayern Munich figures. Van Gaal is close to being appointed as the new Manchester United manager but if Guardiola's job in Germany is seen as being in doubt it could prompt Old Trafford officials to rethink their options Is pep the rght man or Van Gaal?
Bayern Munich star has told Bild he isn't happy, Manchester United €40m swoop looks less silly-- Poor Mario Gotze isn't happy with his current situation at Bayern Munich. The German international probably thought he'd get a bigger role at the Bundesliga champions but he's not been an automatic first choice for Pep Guardiola in the biggest games and that's even with the manager's perceived favourite, Thiago, being injured. Bild, in a lengthy piece on Gotze's troubles, quote the player as saying "Of course I'm not happy. But I will keep pushing and hope to be back soon with the trust of the coach to play from the beginning." Bild look at it from a purely German perspective and wonder why their 'greatest talent' isn't getting a pivotal role at Bayern Munich since his move from Borussia Dortmund last summer. They say Gotze is aware that his manager Guardiola prefers other players and the youngster knows that he wasn't the first transfer choice of the Spaniard, Bild saying that was Neymar. Louis Van Gaal wants Muller at Man Utd Source: Kicker Friday, May 2, 2014 08:51 Louis Van Gaal wants to make Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller his first signing when he is named as Manchester United manager. The Germany star is unhappy at the Allianz Arena under Pep Guardiola.
Reliable reports have confirmed that Sir Alex Ferguson made an approach to Pep Guardiola before choosing David Moyes to be his successor as Manchester United manager. Were Ferguson to try again now, he might not find Bayern Munich too hard to deal with. After defeat to Real Madrid Guardiola promised to keep faith with the style of play he so majestically defined while at Barcelona. But will Bayern stick with him? There have been rumblings of discontent — heard even from the Alpine heights of Franz Beckenbauer — and these would grow in volume if Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia beat them in the German cup final. Bayern after Heynckes was always going to be a hard act to manage, like United after Ferguson. United after Moyes would be more appealing and the logic of Ferguson backing his original plan to get Guardiola could be hard to resist. [Source: London Evening Standard]
No-Brainer: Five compelling reasons why this maestro HAS TO BE next boss at Manchester United And while we respect the work of Louis Van Gaal we still think that Ryan Giggs should be made permanent manager of Manchester United. Why? 1. Experience – this seems to be the main concern of those around the club. Ryan Giggs has no management experience savour for a year as David Moyes’s assistant at Manchester United. But when Pep Guardiola took over at Barcelona he only had one year of management experience and that was with the Barcelona reserve team. We think that Pep went on to form the greatest club side of all time. Giggs does have vast experience of domestic and European football – as a player. He totally understands what it takes to be successful at home and abroad. No experience? PAH! Scholes, Butt and Neville in track suits next to Giggsy in a suit in the dugout – tell me that didn’t feel right. 2. Intelligence – the way that he has presented himself in interviews over the last week tells ...

Pep Guardiola: "We played very badly with ball; it's my fault. When you play badly, you defend badly as well." Pep at the press conference: "I know that it's a difficult night for us, for me and for my team." Guardiola: "We are disappointed & sad to have lost. We lost clearly and by a large margin." Guardiola: "What we did against Arsenal and Manchester United did not work today." Guardiola: "In the first leg in Madrid, we had more control than today and at least a couple of chances." Matthias Sammer: "We don't like losing but we have to accept another team was better today." Arjen Robben: "We were punished today and we have to accept that. We shouldn't be too sad though." Lahm: "This is incredibly bitter and disappointing. We believe it's better to go for zonal marking at set-pieces." Lahm: "We conceded two early goals and it was very difficult from then on." Philipp Lahm: "We have to accept responsibility as a team. It's nobody's fault, we have to defend collectively." Robben: "We have to keep our chins ...

Manchester United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard has suggested Ryan Giggs could be the next Pep Guardiola.
Anders Lindegaard has jumped on the bandwagon and compared Manchester United interim manager Ryan Giggs to Pep Guardiola
Nothing like a bit of hyperbole from the Utd camp. Good grief. Goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard has become the latest Manchester United player to back Ryan Giggs's claims to be the next permanent manager. Lindegaard has compared Giggs to Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola. "It might sound pretty rash and naive, but, in my opinion, we are dealing with a new Guardiola," said the Dane.
Breaking News : Pep Guardiola in talks with Manchester United to be the new manager
In 2008, Barcelona who are a club of almost the same stature of Manchester United, took a massive chance and decided to rebuild by appointing a 37-year old manager who had NO experience of managing a major team in and NO experience of managing in international or Champions League football. That manager was appointed because he was well versed in the Barcelona philosphy. That manager went on to win 14 trophies in 4 years. Who was that manager? It ws Pep Guardiola. It worked for Barcelona although they did have an amazing squad that obviously helped too. it may work for Man United and Giggs. I think Man United should give Giggs a chance of being the permanent manager. Like Guardiola was in 2008 with Barcelona, Giggs knows Manchester United's winning philosophy and has learnt from Man United's best manager. But it requires Manchester United to be brave and give an unproven guy a chance. Barcelone did it and it worked out rather well for them.
Pep Guardiola: "I think Manchester United have a fantastic squad and with the right additions can be a force very quickly".
My thoughts on David Moyes' sack and Giggsy's interim appointment: Apart from his uninspiring and uncharismatic demeanour, one of the many reasons why David Moyes carved a monumentally disastrous niche for himself at the Old Trafford was the fundamental lack of grasp of the rudiments of footballing philosophy of Manchester United. Unlike Pep Guardiola who, for instance, in addition to being prodigiously gifted with motivating ebullience and inspirational zest, was natured, grown and tutored in the incubating ambience of Barcelona's footballing philosophy. As such, he was able to effortlessly transform the theories learnt within the classrooms of Barcelona Football Academy into impactful and effectual on-pitch practicals to obtain remarkable successes, of course with players who themselves were mostly distinguished alumni of the academy. Comparatively speaking, there's no better candidate at the Old Trafford to emulate Pep Guardiola in transforming his outstanding apprenticeship into masterful managerial s ...
Manchester United would be challenging for the Premier League this season had Jose Mourinho or Pep Guardiola replaced Sir Alex Ferguson, says former assistant manager Rene Meulensteen. Both coaches were understood to be candidates to succeed Ferguson upon his retirement, but the Red Devils opted to bring in David Moyes.
Ryan: Giggs: Man Utd role has echoes of Pep Guardiola - Bruce Ryan Giggs could succeed as Manchester United manager in the same way as Pep Guardiola thrived at Barcelona, says Old Trafford stalwart Steve Bruce. Giggs, 40, is temporary boss for the final four games of the Premier League season after David Moyes's sacking. Hull City boss Bruce said: "There's been a lot of players who've jumped in. Guardiola, [Jurgen] Klinsmann - big players in big jobs. He might win the next four games and give them something to think about." Fellow Premier League manager - and United fans' favourite - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Welshman Giggs is destined to be a manager at the highest level. "I have spoken to Giggsy, of course, and I wished him all the best," said the Cardiff City boss

When Sir Alex Ferguson finally decided to end his illustrious reign at Manchester United, many expected him to hire a strong manager. It was expected that he would choose somebody with a proven track record at the highest level, someone like Jose Mourinho or even Carlo Ancelotti. However Manchester United, on Fergie's recommendation, opted for stability and went with David Moyes. The question is: Was Ferguson's recommendation a set up on Moyes? My theory is that Fergie conveniently chose a coach who would fail so that he may maintain his 'cult hero' status at Old Trafford for a few more years. Yes, it is true that a team like Manchester United needed a manager that would provide long- term stability. A coach like Mourinho is not that type of a manager. There are many managers in Europe who could have brought both stability and results at Old Trafford. The likes of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are just two examples, but Ferge went for Moyes and my only logical conclusion is that it was not for United but ...

Along with my good friends Jürgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, I'd like to officially announce that I'm not interested in the now vacant managers position at Manchester United. I'm truly honoured that my name might be linked with the role, but I feel that my experience with the Football Manager video game might not be quite enough for me to be successful in this role.
Pep Guardiola has ruled himself out of taking the now vacant Manchester United job. The Spaniard's stance follows hot on the heels of fellow Bundesliga boss Jurgen Klopp's insistence he too would stay in Germany. United are in need of a new boss after wielding the axe to oust David Moyes early on Tuesday. But Guardiola was quick to quash any suggestion he could be tempted away from his current project. "I am here, I am Bayern, I will stay two more years here making my job. I feel our team can improve," he said.
I like that Jurgen Klopp has turned down the Manchester United job. Man United don't want to play like Borussia, what could he possibly do there? Was like the Pep Guardiola Chelsea suggestion last year. (Having said that Klopp can always go and take over one club in Catalonia that's lost its way.)
Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola believes David Moyes's sacking as Manchester United boss was no surprise.

If Martin O'Neill hadn't taken on the republic of Ireland Job I would say that he would be the Next Manager incharge of Manchester United. And he would have had a close contest with Roy Keane, but that being said. I would suggest United go for pep guardiola. Then again would they have the balls to bring the Special One away from Chelsea??

Told ya told ya na na na! Get on Pep Guardiola at 25/1 now as next Manchester United manager!!! Just had a ton on it!
Who could replace David Moyes as manager of Manchester United? With Manchester United confirming that they have dispensed with manager David Moyes, it is imperative the club show much more vision in choosing his successor. The lack of imagination was the first failure in the initial decision to pick Moyes. A year later, it remains remarkable Sir Alex Ferguson chose so poorly -- or that the decision was waved through without a proper process. It meant United got their long-heralded succession plan so badly wrong. It couldn't have gone worse. Old Trafford sources state that Ferguson will have a much less influential role in the next decision, that the Glazer owners will be much more active. Of course, the first problem with directly replacing Ferguson was always his very presence. It was precisely because the legendary Scot was in charge for a barely imaginable 26 years that there were really just two men in the game who could directly replace him: Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola. They were the only two man ...
He is a superb player and can decide for himself. We want him to stay.”- Pep Guardiola on Toni Kroos Manchester United have not given up hope of signing Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus, according to Mark Ogden from The Telegraph. Bayern Munich 3-1 Manchester United: Guardiola uses his full-backs in midfield, but Bayern better with a standard system April 10, 2014 The starting line-ups Pep Guardiola played an unusual system, but it didn’t help Bayern break down Manchester United. Guardiola fielded Toni Kroos in the pivot role, with Thomas Muller in midfield and Mario Mandzukic returning upfront. David Moyes brought Shinji Kagawa and Darren Fletcher into his midfield, and recalled Patrice Evra and Chris Smalling at the back. The pattern of the game wasn’t significantly different from the first leg, and the major talking point was Guardiola’s use of his two full-backs. Lahm plays two positions It was surprising that Lahm was seemingly deployed as a right-back, considering Guardiola was without both Thiago Alcantara and Bastian Schweinsteiger from his midfield zone, and therefore Lahm was surely required in the holding role he’s occupied for most of this season. However, moving Lahm to right-back also made sense considering Ma ...
Bayern Munich coach, Pep Guardiola, was pleased that his side reached the Champions League semi-final in a tough game against Manchester United on Wednesday.
Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola praised the "heart" of his players after they battled back from a goal down for the second Champions League game in succession to beat Manchester United and reach the semifinals. type:image caption:Arjen Robben and Bayern Munich advanced to the Champions League semifinals. ENDLomas: Rooney gamble fails • Payne: United outclassed Just as they did at Old Trafford last week, Bayern found themselves behind despite dominating possession as Patrice Evra's second-half goal tilted the tie in United's favour. But Guardiola's side wasted little time in equalising, Mario Madzukic scoring 71 seconds later before strikes from Thomas Mueller and Arjen Robben secured a 3-1 win and Bayern's progress. "They need to explain to me why they always need to go behind before they can react," Guardiola said after the game. "With 3-1 the game was done, we had more and more possession. The opponent was running and running and running -- that was something that I didn't necessarily want that they ...
# Pep Guardiola admits Bayern Munich could not deal with a Champions League exit against Manchester United on Wednesday.
Among all the disappointments for Manchester United, nothing will jar so much as the knowledge that, briefly, they had this game under their control. They will be anguished about the speed at which everything unravelled, leaving them with an uncomfortable gap before they reacquaint themselves with this competition. September 2015, at the earliest. Bayern certainly showed their competitive courage once Patrice Evra had opened the scoring with that cannonball of a shot in the 57th minute but there was still the unmistakable sense, looking back at the way the game immediately swung back in favour of Pep Guardiola's side, that United played a considerable part in their own downfall. This was not Bayern at their formidable best, or even particularly close, but David Moyes's team sagged when they needed authority. A more accomplished side would have been buoyed by the wonder of Evra's goal and braced for the response. A team of Bayern's stature always respond and these were the moments when it needed Moyes's pl ...
MATCH REPORT : BAYERN RESPONDS IN A CHAMPIONS TASTE HAS JUST BEEN PUBLISHED VIA UNPLUGGED SPORTS Bayern Munich remain on course to retain their Champions League crown after coming from behind to beat Manchester United on Wednesday evening to secure a 4-2 aggregate win. A 1-1 draw in Manchester last week meant United claimed a shock aggregate lead at the Allianz Arena when Patrice Evra hit a stunning 57th-minute strike. The goal awoke Bayern from their slumber though, and Mario Mandzukic quickly levelled proceedings. And Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben also netted as three goals in the space of 17 minutes sealed a 4-2 aggregate victory for Pep Guardiola's side. Bayern have now reached the semi-finals of Europe's premier club competition for the third season in a row. The result signals an end to United's hopes of winning a trophy this season – something that has not happened since the 2004-05 campaign. Mandzukic, Muller, Robben, Franck Ribery and Mario Gotze all started for Bayern in an aggressive line-up ...

Bayern Munich 3-1 Manchester United Munich through to the SemiFinal of UEFA Champions League. I know, English Media will be saying, oh David Moyes can only be proud of his team. They defended well, Were disciplined blah blah... But the fact of the matter is, Manchester United record against Pep Guardiola is 3-0. Two times at Barca Pep won and now third against Bayern Munich. You got to Question the negative mentality of English Sides when they play against top quality European Side. That's why I love Real Madrid C.F. All the time they attack, play aggressively, and always push the team on there. If you can score, good enough, but we can score too. English Team needs to reassess their mentality of playing negatively. Point how many times English teams have won while playing negatively ? Probably Rafael Benetiez was good at this strategy at Liverpol n once United won against Barca in CL semi's when Frank Rijkard's Barca was declining.
Pep Guardiola is imploring his men forward from the technical area. He wants to send out a signal here, as Manchester United struggle to even get the ball from the brilliant Bavarians.
I think Manchester United defensively have been excellent. You expected Bayern to come out of the blocks quickly, Arjen Robben has been a threat but saying that David De Gea has not made a save. I think Bayern have lost that cutting edge. Pep Guardiola is a coach who can work a team, he can get them to the final third but then he needs that bit of magic. Robben has been a handful but without hurting United. Franck Ribery has been in and out of the game. United have defended well." You can also follow it via ManUtd.com's live blog and MUTV Online's radio commentary. Video highlights will be available online from 23:00 BST. Form guide: The Reds travel to Bavaria buoyed by the comprehensive and clinical 4-0 win over Newcastle, delivered by a side showing eight changes from the one that started last Tuesday's Champions League draw at Old Trafford. Bayern boss Pep Guardiola also shuffled his pack for his team's last outing, but the the German Champions slipped to a 1-0 defeat at Augsberg, which ended their 53-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer shrugged the result off, saying: "It's all about Wednesday and the match against Manchester United. Nothing else matters," but his side are now without a win in three outings. They have also failed to beat English opposition on home soil this season, losing to Manchester City and drawing wi ...

Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: "We will attack. I always try to put in the head of my players that we will attack in every game but then we have to be careful about the counter. "To defend 1-1 would be a mistake, Manchester United is the best team in the Premier League away from home and they have the quality to score. We have to attack - score one, two or as much as possible."
Wayne Rooney starts for Manchester United as they attempt to book a last four spot at the expense of holders Bayern Munich. TEAM NEWS Bayern will be without three key midfielders for the quarter-final second leg, evenly poised after last week's 1-1 draw. Bastian Schweinsteiger is suspended following his first leg sending-off, Javier Martinez also misses out through suspension, while a third key midfielder, Thiago Alcantara, is out injured. Manchester United have doubts over the fitness of Wayne Rooney, although the striker has travelled to Bavaria despite his injured toe, which was heavily bruised in last week's first leg at Old Trafford. Ashley Young is also doubtful after picking up a hand injury in the weekend's win over Newcastle in the Premier League. But experienced left-back Patrice Evra has indicated he expects to be fit enough to return to the side after missing the first leg through suspension and despite struggling with a knee problem. Bayern boss Pep Guardiola has suggested that Manchester United may have the upper hand in the upcoming second leg UCL clash. His full statement here:
Team Claim From Germany: Manchester United to start Rooney, Kagawa, Evra...-- German newspaper Bild, which also happens to be Europe's biggest selling newspaper, has obviously been full of news and claims ahead of the match between Bayern Munich and Manchester United on Wednesday night. In Tuesday's edition of their newspaper they claimed to have heard from a secret Bayern training session that Pep Guardiola was worried about Manchester United getting the ball in the box and had yelled at his team whilst training to remember that they're quicker than Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, and so to run at them. Guardiola is facing a match under more pressure than he ever has at Bayern Munich and Bild reckon it's showing. However, he looked his confident self during Tuesday's press conference when he bet a journalist a large beer that Wayne Rooney would start. According to Bild, he's right. That would see Alexander Buttner lose his place to Patrice Evra, despite the Dutchman playing so well against Bayern at Old ...
How can Manchester United topple Pep Guardiola's Bayern Munich? In his regular BBC Sport tactics column, Robbie Savage looks at the task facing United. "United manager David Moyes says he might try something different in the second leg," says Savage. "But I cannot see United playing any more open than they did at Old Trafford. If they do that, they will get hammered. "The way United were set up was exactly right to stop Bayern. They had pace on both wings in Danny Welbeck and Antonio Valencia to help their full-backs against Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery."
Pep Guardiola has confirmed he only has 14 players to choose from when Bayern Munich take on Manchester United during their crucial Champions League quarter-final second-leg tie on Wednesday Pep is sounding like Jose now; United are also missing key players and injuries/absences are part and parcel of modern day football. That said, this is a huge opportunity for United to save their season by playing an attack minded team featuring the likes of any three of Welbeck, Valencia, Kagawa, Janujaz and Young to support Rooney. Since Utd MUST score, they need to take the game to Bayern rather than sit back like they did at Old Trafford and try to sneak it unless they are planning to pull off a Chelsea under Di Matteo CL win!!

So, Manchester United salvage some much-needed pride after a disappointing domestic campaign by holding European champions Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. What did we learn from their performance? Why can't David Moyes's team produce that level of display on the Premier League stage? Can United stop the Bayern juggernaut in the return leg in Munich on 9 April? It was hardly a classic performance from Manchester United, but it was of rare vintage compared to the surrender offered up in the face of Liverpool and Manchester City. The reigning champions were given a full-on fight and for a few brief minutes Old Trafford held its breath in the hope that United might even take a lead to Germany when Nemanja Vidic headed them in front just before the hour. The sight of Bayern coach Pep Guardiola, usually cool elegance personified, stalking his technical area in frustration, was a tribute to United's doggedness and organisation as well as Bayern's own failure, at times bordering on a point-blank refu ...
Barney Ronay: David Moyes matched Pep Guardiola's plan to pack the midfield for the tactically fascinating 1-1 draw between Manchester United and Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola has insisted it is still an honour to face Manchester United in the Champions League despite the English clubs troubled season.
Manchester United manager David Moyes believes Tuesday's Champions League game against Bayern Munich will be his first of many meetings with Pep Guardiola. United take on the European champions over two legs for a place in the semi-finals. "I am really looking forward to coming up against Pep," Moyes says. "It is the first time I have done but I have no doubt I will be doing it many times in the future." Some United fans are unhappy with United's form since Moyes took charge last summer, and a plane carrying an anti-Moyes banner was flown over Old Trafford during last Saturday's 4-1 home win over Aston Villa.
who is who in tomorrow's Champions League last 8? Bayern Munich There has seldom been a more dominant football team in recent years than this current Bayern Munich outfit. Pep Guardiola has seemingly built upon perfection since replacing the all-conquering Jupp Heynckes last summer, leaving many suggesting a back-to-back Champions League triumph is something of inevitability. They remain a united machine of a team, with no stand-out stars taking the attention away from what is a model outfit. Bayern were the one team nobody wanted in Friday's draw and their pairing with an under-achieving Manchester United side means that their status as favorites has only strengthened. Real Madrid Real Madrid have been chasing La Decima for 12 years now, and while they have reached the semi-finals on three occasions since their last win in 2002, they have rarely looked as destructive as they have at times this season. The business end will present them with tougher fixtures than those they have negotiated so far in the C ...
Pep Guardiola, when asked about his Champions League match up against Manchester United. This was what he had to say, "I consider us to be One, if not the best team in the world. There's one team in Europe that's is playing better than us and that's Liverpool FC" This they didnt say!
By Ben Hayward | Spanish Football Writer TheClasicois back. Real Madrid and Barcelona battle it out once again in the famous fixture on Sunday, this time with La Liga at stake and, as usual, their hopes rest respectively upon the shoulders of the world's two finest footballers: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Cristiano and Leo meet for the 21st time in aClasicoclash since the Portuguese moved to Madrid from Manchester United in 2009 for what promises to be another intriguing installment of the pair's compelling conflict. But which of the two has peformed better in their meetings over the past five seasons? There was little joy for Ronaldo in his first campaign in Spain. The Portuguese returned from injury to face Barcelona at Camp Nou in La Liga, but Manuel Pellegrini's side lost out to a Zlatan Ibrahimovic volley in a tight encounter and Messi netted the opener in the Primera Division clash at the Santiago Bernabeu later in the season as Pep Guardiola's side won 2-0. The teams' next meeting was much ...
"Manchester United have been handed arguably the toughest draw of all against Bayern. "Pep Guardiola's side have already demonstrated their class against Manchester City and Arsenal this season and United's status as outsiders for the tournament will only be cemented after the draw against the Bundesliga superpower on a mission to become the first club to retain the Champions League. "United manager David Moyes suggested his side might now be in with a chance of making further progress into the Champions League after overcoming Olympiakos. The unmoved odds of 20-1 on United winning the tournament paint a more realistic picture. "Chelsea's task is slightly easier against the big-spending PSG, inspired by Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Jose Mourinho will approach this tie with guarded optimism, especially with the second leg at Stamford Bridge. What has Ferguson seen to make him think Moyes needs more time? It is fair to say that this season so far at Manchester United has not gone as anyone would have expected. We were humiliated in the summer transfer window, points have been dropped against teams we would normally beat without getting out of second gear, and whispers from the dressing room of player discontent have refused to go away. However, Sir Alex Ferguson claimed on Sunday that David Moyes will come good for Manchester United, saying ‘it’s early days and there have been a few changes’ in an attempt to back up this view. It is very difficult to know what the great man has seen so far this season to suggest to him that Moyes is the right man to steer the United ship through these troubled waters. On his appointment, the most compelling argument that could be made for him (aside from the nonsense of his being ‘cut from the same cloth’ as Ferguson) was that we didn’t know how he would adapt to managing the global behemoth that i ...
Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos‘ brother Felix Kroos indirectly revealed that his brother has received an offer from English Premier League side Manchester United while talking to Sky Germany . “We have already talked about it. Manchester has been the team of my dreams since I was a child,” Felix said. “However, I don’t give him any advice. He will take a good decision for himself. There are worse situations than having to decide something like that.” Felix Kroos, aged 22, is a footballer himself and plays for German side Werder Bremen. Toni Kroos was heavily linked with a move away from Allianz Arena in the last transfer window after he had a short rift with manager Pep Guardiola regarding contract extension, but however, things seem to have improved now. Kroos’ current contract with the German Champions expires in 2015

Arsenal v Bayern Munich: The win that kick-started a Gunners revival Comments (276) Arsenal face Champions League holders Bayern Munich at Emirates Stadium after taking two significant steps on the road to recovery from their public humiliation at Liverpool. Manager Arsene Wenger knew his side needed a response to that 5-1 defeat at Anfield with their season reaching defining moments on three fronts. This has been achieved with a solid, if unspectacular, clean sheet in the goalless draw at home to Manchester United and then by exacting revenge on Liverpool with an FA Cup fifth round victory at the Emirates. So with the Premier League ship steadied and FA Cup progress secured, the greatest test of all now comes in the shape of a last-16 Champions League meeting with Bayern, arguably Europe's finest side now under the guidance of coach Pep Guardiola, twice a winner in this competition with Barcelona. And with confidence being rebuilt in the past week, can Arsenal take further solace in their victory in The ...
Alan Smith says Arsenal face an 'incredibly difficult' task against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night. The Gunners host the reigning Champions League title-holders and Bundesliga leaders at the Emirates live on Sky this week in the first of their two-leg knockout round contest. The fixture comes midway through a mixed month for the North London side, who have slipped from the Premier League summit after a 5-1 thrashing by Liverpool but also recorded an FA Cup win over the same opponents and drawn with Manchester United in February. However, ex-Arsenal striker Smith says his former club must be at their absolute best when they tackle Pep Guardiola's side. "You've got to fear for Arsenal against what is probably the best team in Europe," he told The Footballers' Football Show. "Bayern just look formidable and without a weakness. "Arsenal have got to do everything right and particularly defensively they have to be spot on. They've got a chance but only a very slim chance over two legs. It's going to be incred ...

TO UNITED,MADRID & CHELSEA FANS. I think Manchester United Fans must start respecting Barcelona FC now. Barcelona FC also faced similar challenges in 2007/2008 under Frank Rijkaard. We placed 4th on the league log behind Real Madrid,Sevilla and Villareal in that order. Under the technical expert of Pep Guardiola,Barcelona overcame its challenges and won a world record 6 officials trophies the following season by introducing the likes of Pedro,Pique,Busquet, Alves etc into the team. Everybody can now attest to the achievements chalked by these players since 2008/2009 season. (16 trophies and still counting) Though Barcelona has not been in good shape for the past 2 seasons compared to the days of Guardiola yet we have never lost 5 league games in a season. We are still dominating La Liga and Europe. That is a mark of a CLASS Now back to Manchester United, Why can't you do same but rather keep slipping?? Now to Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea.Ata point in time you had great team than any team in E ...
