Richard Dawkins & Lawrence Krauss screen The Unbelievers New York Times bestselling author Richard Dawkins will tour the United States in April to screen his new film, The Unbelievers, and answer audience questions. The evolutionary biologist is joined by internationally known physicist Lawrence Krauss, and at one stop by magician Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller. Filmmakers Gus Holwerda and Luke Holwerda of Black Chalk Productions will also appear and take questions. The film is a road trip documentary that follows Dawkins and Krauss as they make stops around the world, from Australia to New York, to speak out for reason and science. “One of the most remarkable things about making The Unbelievers,” said Gus Holwerda, “was to reveal the Richard Dawkins that you don’t see in public life. He can be a bulldog at the podium when it comes to defending science and reason, but in the film we see him for the person he is, extremely warm and personable.” Several celebrities appear in the film to support Da ...
Jillette and Teller were introduced to one another by Wier Chrisimer, and performed their first show together at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival in August 1975. From the late 1970s through 1981, Penn, Teller, and Chrisimer performed as a trio called "The Asparagus Valley Cultural Society" which played in San Francisco at the Phoenix Theater. Chrisimer helped to develop some bits that continued, most notably Teller's "Shadows" trick, which involves a single red rose. The group disbanded in 1981 after Chrisimer quit show business, leaving Penn Jillette and Teller to work as a pair.

“What I have a problem with is not so much religion or god, but faith. When you say you believe something in your heart and therefore you can act on it, you have completely justified the 9/11 bombers. You have justified Charlie Manson. If it's true for you, why isn't it true for them? Why are you different? If you say "I believe there's an all-powerful force of love in the universe that connects us all, and I have no evidence of that but I believe it in my heart," then it's perfectly okay to believe in your heart that Sharon Tate deserves to die. It's perfectly okay to believe in your heart that you need to fly planes into buildings for Allah.” --Penn Jillette

(Thanks to Retna for the (in)direct inspiration. The following quote fits our situation in Namibia like a glove) When I was a kid, politicians wanted to avoid talking about religion if they could. By reminding Americans that religion shouldn't be an issue, that he was concentrating on big things like poverty and hunger and leading the space race. Penn Jillette

Earlier this week I heard this story on Radiolab. The main subject is about a pair of mind readers who were famous on Australian radio in the 1950s (20 million listeners famous, supposedly 20 million was roughly the population of Australia at the time). Told partially by the couple's grandson, the grandson and the hosts struggle to guess how the couple did their "trick" of mind reading throughout the story as well as recount tales etc. What I found more fascinating though (and why I am posting this here), is the final commentary by Penn Jillette (of Penn and Teller). I was struck by how he describes is broad terms the mechanics behind of how a magic trick is done, I found a strange allegorical similarity between how he describes that "that there is only one secret in magic and ...that is that you can not have a beautiful secret" to the production behind artworks (which is of course my business)... Just listen, perhaps I think you will see where I'm going with this. I also found it compelling that Penn st ...

Penn Jillette, of the famed magic and comedy act, "Pen & Teller," tells it like it is. Penn is a professed atheist. He does not believe in God. After a show one night, a man whom based on this interaction I believe was a Gideon, complimented him, looked him in the eyes with honesty and love and gave him a Gideon Pocket New Testament. Did it change Penn's beliefs? Probably not. But it did lead him to make a video and share it. He makes a profound statement concerning proselytizing.. to paraphrase, "How much would you have to hate someone if you believed in something as big and important as what the Bible says, eternal life, etc. and not tell them?" He is still an atheist, but he appreciated the guy sharing God's word with him.

Penn Jillette half of the magical duo of Penn and Teller was recently on the food network as a contestant on one of the shows. No one probably notices, but the ring finger of his left hand has a bright red painted fingernail. This was explained by him in one of his shows I happened to be watching. When he was younger he was told by his Mamma that hands were important, and their cleanliness and appearance was important as to the integrity of the man. So in answering he, painting this fingernail with polish, he asked her, "Like this?" So out of respect love and the honor of his beloved mother he continues to keep that one fingernail painted in the same bright red nail polish to this very day. It's remarkable how simple of a tribute he has made, and for so few to know what it represents... We all should show as much for our own loved ones. Mike

Quite Long, But Hopefully Informative Post: Dear friends, allow me to wax philosophical for a moment, please. I once heard in a movie that "he who burns twice as bright, only burns for half as long." And is that not the way of the world? Those who make the biggest impacts on the world, whether positive or negative, always seem to leave before they are done. On some occasions we are sad. Like when those who preached for peace often meet violent, undeserved deaths. And sometimes, under our breaths or maybe even publicly, we cheer as those who call for violence often, eventually have their calls answered. But what seems to happen is that the universe tries to balance itself. It tries to right some of the wrong. Eventually, he who reigns at La Cabaña eventually finds himself at La Higuera. But there are too many things that are tipping the scales in the wrong direction. Africa, sweet Africa is being eaten alive from the inside out by corruption. The world's "superpowers" continue to rape the Motherland of he ...

It's time for my annual Musical Snobbery 2013 Best Of list. I am no Rock critic, I just like music. As with previous years, I haven't heard everything, but when I get to look at the Paste Top 50 or the Pazz and Jop list, there will be a wealth of new things to search out. I have again resisted the urge to look at any Best Of lists, so as to not be influenced by their Snobbery. Ahh 2013! I almost gave up the Snobbery List, but figured it's gotta go on. This year, I think I listened to less new music than I have in years. Myself and Ben enjoyed the year seeking out old T.Rex, Zappa and Foghat releases! The Mayor of Stress Town Task 10 Air Date: May 5, 2013 Task Scope: The All-Stars are asked to design a Foxwoods Resort themed suite and host a party at the brand-new Barclays Center. Power project manager: Marilu Henner Plan B project manager: Lisa Rinna Judges: Donald Trump, John Rich, Donald Trump Jr. Tension: During planning, Marilu's controlling behavior got on Trace's nerves and he had a fit of frustration as she wouldn't consider his or Lil Jon's ideas. This led to some friction on Power which caused Trace to shut down for the majority of the task. Plan B had much better teamwork; but it all threatened to derail when a major snowstorm had Lisa and Penn coming up with another plan in case their entertainment guest (including Penn's partner Teller) couldn't make it Winning team: Plan B Reasons for win: The executives thought that the attention to detail in the suite was incredible, and appreciated the celebrities that Penn Jillette drew into the suite, including Teller, David Burke (who created ...
Episode 8: Are You My Zulu Dancing Man? Task 8Air Date: April 21, 2013 Task Scope: The players are tasked to promote an interactive travel expo for South Africa Tourism. Power project manager: Brande Roderick Plan B project manager: Penn Jillette Judges: Donald Trump, Bret Michaels, George Ross Dramatic tension: At the task briefing, the teams were each offered one of two themes - "Adventure" or "Romance". Both wanted Adventure, with Lil Jon in particular pushing for Power to take that theme, and Power ended up winning it via a coin flip. The team intended to highlight safari, but to their shock the tourism executives forbade them from using it in their campaign because "everyone knows about it already," leaving them scrambling to find workable alternative ideas. Plan B also had trouble figuring out how to make their theme work, and were further hindered by Gary Busey's lack of focus on the task, leading to Penn Jillette realising that he and Lisa Rinna couldn't possibly organize the expo by them ...
the episode. Episode 2: Just as Simple as Making Soup Task 2Air Date: March 10, 2013 Task Scope: Team members must create a 3D interactive photo experience for Universal's marketing campaign. Power project manager: Omarosa Plan B project manager: Dee Snider Judges: Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump Winning team: Power Reasons for win: Even though the brand messaging was poorly given by having the "Orlando" part of "Universal Studios Orlando" put in a position where it was illegible, their creativity of making it all about the films and characters made it very precise and not about the celebrities. The overall construction quality of their experience was also judged to be far better than Plan B's effort. Losing team: Plan B Reasons for loss: Even though they loved the slogan, they didn't like the simplicity of the project and that they disliked that they had cardboard cutouts of the celebrities, who were stood nearby in exactly the same clothing they had on the cutouts, meaning that passers-b ...
What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly - that is the first law of nature. ~ Voltaire Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions. ~ Gilbert K. Chesterton Tolerance is another word for indifference. ~ W. Somerset Maugham Tolerance it a tremendous virtue, but the immediate neighbors of tolerance are apathy and weakness. ~ James Goldsmith I have a zero tolerance for sanctimonious morons who try to scare people. ~ Pat Robertson Tolerance is a very dull virtue. It is boring. Unlike love, it has always had a bad press. It is negative. It merely means putting up with people, being able to stand things. ~ E. M. Forster Tolerance - the function of an extinguished ardor - tolerance cannot seduce the young. ~ Emile M. Ego Depletion: Heard an interview with Penn Jillette. He was talking about his experience on Dancing With The Stars. The film crew follows them around for many hours. You are also working hard. The result is after 10 hours of filming you have less control over what you say and do. Your ego just gets tired and the filters start to fade. I remember during my Ragnar runs this was especially true for most of us. Hey you were in a cramped van for 27 hours with maybe an hour or 2 of sleep and running. In a way I am surprised we did not kill each other. Certainly, the language got more colorful. So you do anything that stresses the body and mind for an extended period of time (could be "just" hours) and you will be more effected by your surroundings. You may react more or feel more mood swings. (and add even a little booze to that and watch out) I know this has happened to me. In media res, I did not recognize it, it took maybe a week to have my DOH! moment. (Homer Simpson DOH! sound)

I do not condone violence but in this instance I am for it. Stupid thing to say to a cricketer and I hope he keeps his opinions to himself next time. Pay back for the attempts he tried to discredit Penn Jillette.

Folks, I'm going to say something today that's guaranteed to offend someone out there. I fully expect my friend count to go down after this one. But I love you too much not to say it, as I have a insatiable need to uphold Biblical truth. The cross of Christ IS offensive, because it shows all your sins in stark, bloody display, and tells you the Son of God had to die to purchase your soul. But it also clearly displays God's love, and how far He was willing to go to save you. I would hope you've followed me long enough to respect what I have to say as a Christian. And I would also hope you'd respect me for standing up for what I believe in instead of pretending things don't exist. Penn Jillette, one of the most outspoken atheists today, says he absolutely respects Christians who proselytize, because if Christians believe these truths and don't tell you, then do they truly love you? With that said, I must bring to your attention untruths that are being spouted from very prominent Christian figures. "Unt ...

"Don't smoke...unless you want to look cool." - Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller)
In 2013 I read 146 books, an eight percent increase from 2012. Below are some notable ones. Best book – East of Eden by the great John Steinbeck. This one was not just the best book I read in 2013, it is so far the best book I have read in my life. It was so good, I limited myself to 30-40 pages a day to savor it. The dialogue between Adam, Samuel, and Lee is still some of the best written. Cannot imagine a better book being written, but I am determined to try and find it. Best fiction book – Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walters. Just an exceptional story set in modern day Hollywood and Italy during the filming of Cleopatra in the early 60’s. I loved this book, and the writing was brilliant. Best Sequel – Dr Sleep by the immortal Stephen King. This was the sequel to The Shining, and it more than lived up to that book. Catching up with Dan Torrence in the present day was amazing, and the King writing was, as always, a true joy to read. Best non-fiction – Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink. Wonderfull ...
I believe the equal rights amendment is a necessity of life for all citizens. The cabinet sometimes felt that I shouldn't be so outspoken. Betty Ford I admit that my wife is outspoken, but by whom? Sam Levenson A lot of people, to attack an outspoken atheist, one of the things they'll do is say, 'You are as bad as the fundamentalist Christians.' And my answer is always, 'I hope so.' Penn Jillette I don't know how many parts I've lost because a lot of the politics in California are very conservative, and I'm fairly outspoken. I always tried to get as much politics in as I could, because I do believe in class struggle, and I think that's what's left out. James Cromwell There is a deliberate and quite outspoken attack on the whole idea of people owning private property. Dixie Lee Ray In reality, American girls are among the most outspoken, ambitious, successful girls in the history of the human race. Penn Jillette said it best. "To those of you who celebrate Christmas, have a merry one, and for those of us who don't -- Let's have a great day full of love anywho. Ok?"
Oh Lord Jesus, Thanks for waking me up to commune with me. Help me to increasingly realize just what salvation means to me.to realize more and more in my heart the magnitude of the chasm you have bridged between me and my Creator. Let this increasing realization create in my heart a love, a devotion to please you. I wrote the above in the middle of the night on December 5th of this year. Be careful what you pray, I have been told. Well I see why. Again I have been awakened this morning by my Lord. Seems as if my creator has used a atheist and a believer to tell me what He wants of me. Penn Jillette,an atheist, of Penn and Teller fame says this "If you believe what the Bible says, HOW MUCH DO YOU HAVE TO HATE SOMEBODY NOT TO TELL THEM HOW TO HAVE ETERNAL LIFE”. I was recently sent a book by a believer, you know who you are Carrie Kennedy Dean, by Corrie Ten Boom. She and her whole family was imprisoned for helping the Jews during World War II. Many in her family died in the concentration camp. She wa ...
I use Teller's broad definition of art: "Whatever we do after the chores are done." There's one show business and Bach, Dylan, Ron Jeremy and the guy at the mall in the Santa suit are all in it. -- Penn Jillette
Something to Think About: If every trace of any single religion were wiped out again and nothing was passed on, it would never be created exactly that way again. There might be some other nonsense in its place, but not that exact nonsense. If all of science were wiped out, it would still be true and someone would find a way to figure it out again. Without hype, Lot's salt-heap *** would never be thought of again. Without science, the Earth still goes around the sun and someday someone will find a way to prove that again. --Penn Jillette (in God, No!)

I'm always surprised when the corporate world does stupid things, because they're often not very stupid in hindsight. Penn Jillette
I love when people post these things about random stuff and they use numbers in the millions, billions and trillions heck even in the thousands. i dough they really even know what they are agreeing with or sharing. Prime example, Google published that it got one hundred thousand (100,000) people to sign a petition for open internet access ((I do not disagree with the topic at hand. Just using it to make a point.). That's great right, it sounds like a LOT of people right? Well lets put that in some prospective. According to the US Census Bureau the population of the US is over three hundred seventeen million (317,000,000)(For this lets just round it and use 300,000,000 which is a really big number... Now take another look at that 100,000. Doesn't look as big now does it? That is only one out of every three thousand people. Which when people into a prospective we can actually kind of picture isn't very much. The count is now up to something like three million now, which don't get me wrong is a lot but that' ...
There's a cooking competition show coming soon with Vanilla Ice, Judy Gold, and Penn Jillette as contestants? I didn't realize how much I needed this.
People trip too much when I tell them I don't believe in god. Sorry I'm a person who doesn't believe anything they hear and only half of what they see. I believe I officially lost faith 8 years ago when my granny passed away. That's when I knew my prayers would continue to go unanswered. That's when the door opened for me to look into this whole religion thing a bit more in depth. I just don't understand how anyone can follow a religion that constantly contradicts itself. How is homosexuality not natural but yet talking snakes, walking on water, dead rising, people parting seas and virgins giving birth all natural? How do you follow someone who willingly killed over 2 million people (excluding the flood). That's gods kill count from the bible and guess what Satan's kill count was? A whopping 10 people. Oh but he is your lord and savior Jesus Christ and he loves you all. This is why I laugh. People think evolution is a outrageous concept but yet virgins having babies is totally normal and happened IRL YALL ...

Penn Jillette (an atheist) talks about the importance of Apostatizing
I wish Penn Jillette was growing up now and not 50 years ago..then we could be bros.
I wonder at the words of Jonathan Swift. Come wonder at the wonders the world has wondered about. This week I met a dragon named Piff, And saw an old book that it was all about. Not one dime was spent in the one armed bandit And the cost was not a lot. And I am sitting at the airport and say "dammit." How did the all come about? I have some friends that lots of people know And I do name drop a bit. But you talk about your friends don't you? So do I, just a bit. The tears flow, the heart beats I want to shout out loud. All because I know a couple honest cheats. And I thank you all in the crowds. Zappa said, music is the best. I now have to differ with the man. He never had a card trick from a bear. Or seen magic done with one hand. Or seen a movie with Penn Jillette, Or held Teller's special book. Or seen a letter by Harry H. Or sat with Z in a nook. Harry Potter said he really loves magic If he were real he'd know. I have seen the real kind of magic. Dear friends, I love you so. So thank you all, Mcbride, ...

Do you know what would be awesome? - A fantasy film with magic and psychic and unicorns and gods and stuff - casted only with debunkers, skeptics and athiests. I think Teller should be the hero, and Penn Jillette should be the goblin king. James Randi can be a super wizard, Richard Dawkins is the evil wizard, Christopher Hitchens as the "guy who gives critical information in a ran down tavern" and Derren Brown to be in the segment that hypnotizes the viewer into thinking the films was better than it actually was. Okay, the last bit was a joke, but a great score of seriousness is across my brain right now. Those guys would be amazing in a fantasy epic. Better than all those who actually believe it.

Finally got the Las Vegas trip sorted out. Leaving in 3 days and I STILL found decent flights and rooms at the Venetian! Ha ha. I didn't actually do anything, it was his turn to play travel agent. :) I've never wanted to go to Vegas (not with my headaches!) and we don't gamble BUT I really want to see Penn and Teller. And eat at Scarpetta. Elton John is performing there Sunday! Why waste money gambling? (I say that about alcohol, too so consider this rhetorical). Penn Jillette is a hero of mine so it's like a pilgrimage. Unfortunately, the Grand Canyon is closed (!) but I think we'll do a helicopter tour so we don't have to make a return trip there just to check off a bucket list item. Burro rides are not on George's wish list. *** you, politicians. Can't someone just leave the door unlocked so we can sneak in? That glass overlook was on my bucket list too!
I think Jacoby associates Penn Jillette, James Randi, Shermer with "skeptic" and hippies as humanists.
I love Mike Huckabee, but I have to do this for the sake of everyone out there. It hurts me so much to have to crush him like this because I love Mike Huckabee so much. Once in a while, he has some great things to say that I completely agree with. Unfortnatuely, he falls into the same category that most of the people in the Republican party fall into unforutantely. It is not that he is stupid or dumb. It is merely that he fails to do the proper research when someone tells him something. Remember when Kickstarter was a way for small people with a good idea to raise the funds to get said idea off the ground and into consumers hands? First case I heard was Zach Braff and his "Wish I Was Here", now I see Penn Jillette doing it for his movie "Director's Cut".
