I had an exciting week last week. I got to attend The Museum of the Waxhaws Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day with museum hostess Cathy Wright and historian Jack Clay on Saturday and Sunday, December 6th & 7th. Jack had assembled a great display of WWII memorabilia including rare documents and photographs of that fateful day in world history. Then on Tuesday I spent several hours interviewing two veterans, one who fought in the Pacific Theater and was involved in the invasion of Iwo Jima, the other who was in the Army Air Corps flying in over a dozen combat aircraft and then went on to fly missions over North Korea in the 1950’s… Both Jack Clay and I were interviewed by the local NBC affiliate WCNC reporter Diana Rugg for a news spot on the Sunday evening news report. They condensed the hour-plus interview session down to just two minutes. Jack had about 30 seconds of airtime and I had a few seconds exposure of my latest book as seen over my shoulder. Oh well…. But at least the museum got a good bit of w ...

Please let us NEVER FORGET. Today is Pearl Harbor Remembrance day and I see hardly any posts for these men. I have been to these memorials and I can say once you have seen the magnitude and the men who come to pay their respects that survived, you will never forget. May they all RIP. Thank you for giving your lives in service for our country and so that we all may live free
Am I the only one who felt the attention heaped on Prince William and Kate was a disrespect by media and others, as it was Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day? What I saw last night on tv was hideous. People screaming in excitement to catch a glimpse of them... I hold nothing against them, but priorities are out of whack. The celebrations and public displays in their honor were cheesy and over the top. Maybe I just don't get it...

I received this from my dad. I hope you will read it. - PH The Wall A little history most people will never know. Interesting Veterans Statistics off the Vietnam Memorial Wall. There are 58,267 names now listed on that polished black wall, including those added in 2010. The names are arranged in the order in which they were taken from us by date and within each date the names are alphabetized. It is hard to believe it is 57 years since the first casualty. The first known casualty was Richard B. Fitzgibbon, of North Weymouth, Mass Listed by the U.S. Department of Defense as having been killed on June 8, 1956. His name is listed on the Wall with that of his son, Marine Corps Lance Cpl Richard B. Fitzgibbon III, who was killed on Sept. 7, 1965. There are three sets of fathers and sons on the Wall. 39,996 on the Wall were just 22 or younger. Walter Anthony "Junior" or "Junebug" Thackerson, Jr. (b.09/06/1944 - d.05/21/1966 --in Vietnam) (Listed as MIA- missing in action) 8,283 were just 19 years old. The large ...
Thank you Mr. Eggenberger for participating in our Ceremony and for this nice letter to the editor in the Corpus Christi Caller Times. CORPUS CHRISTI — Michael J. Eggenberger Sr., Waters Edge Pipes and Drums Lovely ceremony on Lexington Unbelievable all the great people who braved the cold weather on Saturday, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, and were on the Lexington to commemorate those who gave all that dark day in 1941 and of course the veterans who served on the Lexington as well as those of “The Greatest Generation” who are still with us today. The Veterans Band played some great songs from that era. Taps played by bugle, the pipes and drums of the combined bands of the Corpus Christi Fire Dept. and Waters Edge Pipes and Drums played some tunes, including Amazing Grace. Yes, the event Saturday was truly amazing as it is every year! Thank you, all veterans!

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, 2013 - Presidential Proclamation BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE United States OF AMERICA A PROCLAMATION More than seven decades ago, on a calm Sunday morning, our Nation was attacked without warning or provocation. The bombs that fell on the island of Oahu took almost 2,400 American lives, damaged our Pacific Fleet, challenged our resilience, and tested our resolve. On National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we honor the men and women who selflessly sacrificed for our country, and we show our enduring gratitude to all who fought to defend freedom against the forces of tyranny and oppression in the Second World War. In remembrance of Pearl Harbor and to defend our Nation against future attacks, scores of young Americans enlisted in the United States military. In battle after battle, our troops fought with courage and honor. They took the Pacific theater island by island, and eventually swept through Europe, liberating nations as they progressed. Because of their extraordinary ...

As I am sure you are aware this Saturday is December 7th. It is also National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. We are losing so many WWII veterans everyday and they deserve to be recognized for their significant accomplishments. Cindy thanked a WWII veteran that was in our office and he simply said I just did what needed to be done, which is very typical of that generation. Take a moment to talk to your kids and grandkids about events like the Pearl Harbor attack and other events like it. Reading about them in a textbook does not have the same impact as when it comes from a parent or other loved one. Let us never forget.

Today is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, paying tribute to the victims of Japan's 12/7/1941 bombing of the US naval base at Pearl Harbor. This led to the entry of the United States into WWII and the subsequent signing of Executive Order 9066 by Pres. FDR mandating the incarceration of 120,000 innocent Americans of Japanese descent.
Let's not forget today, Dec. 7, is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Blessings to all Troops and Veterans out there. Ahe'hee. On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day there were 5,000 Indians in the military. By the end of the war, 24,521 reservation Indians, exclusive of officers, and another 20,000 off-reservation Indians had served. The combined figure of 44,500 was more than ten percent of the entire male, female and children Native American population during the war years. This represented one-third of all able-bodied Indian men from 18 to 50 years of age. In some tribes, the percentage of men in the military reached as high as 70 percent. Also, several hundred Indian women served in the WACS, WAVES, and Army Nurse Corps. -Excerpt from an article by SCAIR historian Roy Cook, Opata-Oodham, Mazopiye Wishasha.
Torpedoing Pearl Harbor Day By Mindy Kotler, director, Asia Policy Point - 12/07/12 08:00 AM ET Last year, Congress stopped remembering Pearl Harbor. For nearly 50 years, the U.S. Congress had honored the survivors and fallen of Imperial Japan’s deadly attack through a resolution either asking the President to issue a proclamation designating December 7 as Pearl Harbor Day or issuing their own recognition of when the United States was pushed into World War II. This ended in 2011. America’s Greatest Generation was pushed aside to make a petty swipe at the White House about a surplus bust of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. A House rules change in 2011 did away with commemorative resolutions. As a staffer from the House Speaker John Boehner’s office told me, a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day resolution would be “frivolous.” The House Republican leadership of the 112th Congress had adopted new rules barring consideration of any measure that “expresses appreciation, commends, congratu ...

Today is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day... does the thought of that bring up negative images? Read this. Remember, no matter how dark the situation looks, there is ALWAYS a silver lining if you look deep enough - its a little long, but WORTH THE READ: Sunday, December 7th, 1941--Admiral Chester Nimitz was attending a concert in Washington, D.C. He was paged and told there was a phone call for him. When he answered the phone, it was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on the phone. He told Admiral Nimitz that he (Nimitz) would now be the Commander of the Pacific Fleet. Admiral Nimitz flew to Hawaii to assume command of the Pacific Fleet. He landed at Pearl Harbor on Christmas Eve, 1941. There was such a spirit of despair, dejection and defeat--you would have thought the Japanese had already won the war. On Christmas Day, 1941, Adm. Nimitz was given a boat tour of the destruction wrought on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Big sunken battleships and navy vessels cluttered the waters every where you looked. As th ...

Good morning. You may find a little fog in the area but most of it appears to have lifted. A little caution never hurts. Early news for today, Pleasanton City Council had multiple meetings last night, and the city has a new police chief, Ronald Sanchez. A generally nice day in store for us today with a high in the 80s, but some colder weather is on its way (they say) and should hit around Sunday. Have a wonderful day, and don't forget to remember that it is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day!
